    I really appreciate how they spent all the effort to make sure the explosion was recorded in high quality and slow motion, as well as giving exact specifications on what they used and the results. Most of the time, whenever I find a explosion video like this on TH-cam, the quality is terrible, but this is nicely done.

      This whole conversation and video reminds me of when me and a old buddy / neighbor made a sparkler bomb and put it in a old tv/computer monitor (I can't remember) and filmed the explosion in his backyard about ten yrs ago and then later slowed it down frame by frame as if it was slow mo ; it was so cool when it was done frame by frame especially at the peak of the explosion 💥. It was funny it took us multiple times to finally get it to explode on film , until super determined , explosive loving me got mad at our failures' seeing it shoot off like a big bottle rocket numerous times on film and decided to try a last ditch effort to wrap the last of our sparklers in tape and extra few extra dozen times or more instead of 1 dozen like the numerous attempts filming before , it felt like I wrapped it up in that gaming chair in his house for atleast a hr or more lol! like I said I became super determined and frustrated at this point at our prior failures, and finally after my last frustratingly tedious wrapping of the sparklers it finally worked and we made a really cool video of it. He lost it later he said to my disappointment , but somewhere? out there it exists. I crack up thinking about how frustrated and determined I was sitting there wrapping it with tape in his chair trying to get our last set of sparklers to explode after my buddy at the time gave up and laid down a hr or more ago haha. Its especially funny if u know how I can get once I set my mind to something lol! Also speaking of sugar and fire balls when I was little and left home alone across the st from the video many yrs before , I'd heat up the stove all the way and stand there and throw handfuls of sugar on it watching and making huge (whooshing) fireballs for almost a half hr at times haha. I've always loved fire and explosives and was always determined to see them haha. I don't normally tell random stories on YT about my youth or my twenties but this just felt appropriate today.

      @@Owanray a thing to mention here is that beirut stockpile detonated due to likely contamination. the AN got contaminated sitting in the warehouse that would make the oxidizer decompose. There was a fire that triggered the explosion yes because even just AN will explosively decompose when it reaches critical mass. However ANY explosion becomes more efficient (releases more energy) when the portions of oxidizer to fuel reach stoichiometric conditions

    • @julianmccallum8812
      @julianmccallum8812 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      an explosion is just a chemical reaction happening faster than the speed of sound, any slower its called deflegration. just like any other chemical reaction if the stoiciometric conditions are reached you have the most "efficient" release of energy from that reaction. In an explosive this translates to more boom

    make ammonium nitrate:
    Materials:
    138 g sodium bisulfate (found with pool chemicals, used to lower pH)
    1 mole equivalent of a nitrate salt, available as any of the following:
    85 g sodium nitrate (common food preservative)
    101 g potassium nitrate (which you can buy or make yourself)
    118 g calcium nitrate (tetrahydrate)
    ammonia (common household cleaner)
    methanol (optional, which may be found as HEET fuel treatment)
    water
    pH meter or pH paper
    access to a stove
    coffee filter or paper towels
    Procedure:
    Dissolve the sodium bisulfate in the minimum amount of water (about 300 ml).
    Dissolve your nitrate salt in the minimum amount of water (amount depends on the salt).
    Mix the two solutions.
    Next, you will neutralize the solution, which is quite acidic. Stir in ammonia until the pH of the mixture is 7 or higher. Use a pH meter (or pH paper). Reacting ammonia, sodium bisulfate, and nitrates will give you sodium sulfate and ammonium nitrate.
    Sodium sulfate and ammonium nitrate have different solubilities in water, so boil the solution to get the sodium sulfate to crystallize. Remove the liquid from heat when crystals of sodium sulfate form in the bottom of the pan.
    Chill the solution in the freezer to get as much of the sodium sulfate as possible to drop out of the solution.
    Run the solution through a filter (coffee filter or paper towels) to separate the solid sodium sulfate from the ammonium nitrate solution.
    Allow the ammonium nitrate solution to evaporate, which will give you ammonium nitrate, with some sodium sulfate impurity. This is ‘good enough’ for most chemistry projects.
    If you want to further purify the ammonium nitrate, dissolve it in about 500 ml of methanol. The ammonium nitrate is soluble in methanol, while the sodium sulfate is not.
    Run the solution through a filter, which will give you sodium sulfate on the filter and a solution of ammonium nitrate.
    Allow the methanol to evaporate from the solution to obtain crystalline ammonium nitrate.

      According to my knowledge ammonium-nitrate alone is able to make comparable detonation if triggered by a suitable primer charge. In deviation to the potassium-cation in potassium-nitrate the ammonium - cation is combustable enough to react with the oxygen of the nitate - anion. potassium-nitrate can do smaller deflagrations as gun powder mixtur or - in bigger amounts only - also with powdered sugar. A mixture of e.g.: 33 g magnesiumpowder and 67 g potassium-nitrate comes closer to a detonation emitting much UV - radiation ("Flashpowder").

    Just a theoretical question here, if you were to create a sealed pressure vessel filled with AN, then fill the vessel with for instance liquid propane or butane, would it boost the reaction at all if detonated? I don't really understand the chemistry behind it and am genuinely curious if the two could interact.

    • @windows843
      @windows843 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      When AN detonates, one of the gases it releases is oxygen, which really likes to react with fuels especially in extereme situations, like explosions. Butane/propane are fuels, so if correct amounts were used, it would definitely work.

    • @TheExplosiveGuy
      @TheExplosiveGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@windows843 OK that makes sense, I wasn't aware it created free oxygen upon detonation, I thought it was strictly a reaction between the AN and fuel itself. "ANLP" seems like a lot of wasted effort when nitromethane or fuel oil works so well, but it would probably be a pretty cool experiment to run. It would be interesting if you could get the fuel into a supercritical state as well, see if that makes any difference, though I doubt it would have any practical effect really...

    • @Slowly_Going_Mad
      @Slowly_Going_Mad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@TheExplosiveGuy I would guess that it would roughly be the same as ANFO maybe a bit less power though. There are two types of ANFO though prilled and milled. The main difference being density. ANFO made with prills will behave more like flashpowder but has a lot of gas generation so is used in mining for moving stuff. Milled ANFO is usually homemade or sensitized when used commercially and is a substitute for dynamite with a relatively small performance penalty. On density for a given substance the more dense the explosive and the less dense the decomposition products the better the power will be. This pretty much the same idea as squeezing as much efficiency out of a diesel engine by raising the compression ratio.

  • @davidldg6369
    @davidldg6369 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    ANNM
    You will need ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and nitromethane (CH3NO2). Optional are metal dusts (Al, Mg, Zn, Si) and methanol (CH3OH). For the improvised blasting cap you’ll need acetoneperoxide or HMTD - other primary explosive will work, too. Because of the easy acetoneperoxide production, it’ll be used in this project.
    The ammonium nitrate has to be dried in an oven. Procedures therefor are given in US Patent No. 4,093,478 by Gerald.L. Hurst. The patent provides varios methods for the ammonium nitrate preperation, it’s basically wetting the AN and then evaporating the water resulting in reduced density and increased „oil retention“ of the ammonium nitrate.
    The density should be around 0,6 g/ccm to 0,8 g/ccm for the dry AN. Store it in airtight containers, so packed AN can be stored for weeks without getting useless.
    Here’s all that is needed: ammonium nitrate, nitromethane and metal dust (zinc).
    Now add the metal dust to the AN. Do it quick to avoid that the ammonium nitrate picks up to much moisture from the air.
    The exact amount of metal dust isn’t critical. A value between 3% and 10% should be OK.
    In this case (1100g ammonium nitrate) 6% (66g) zinc dust is used. A grey powder should be the result.
    You shouldn’t store the ammonium nitrate/metal dust mix, spontaneous decompostition can occur if moisture is present!
    Now it’s time for the nitromethane. If you search the web for the correct ratios to use you’ll find very different opinions/data. Ragnar Benson suggests to use 70 - 80ml nitromethane for 430g ammonium nitrate, though i’m not sure if he really uses 430g. He measures out 250ml (!) ammonium nitrate prills, assuming the density is about 1.725 g/ccm. That’s pretty stupid. The density of 1,7 g/ccm is the crystal density. Prills are never that dense. One can assume a density of 0,8 g/ccm to 1,0 g/ccm for commercial prills. I don’t understand Ragnar, he publishes books about explosives and has no access to a scale? Can’t believe it...
    But the ratios are ~OK.
    In US Pat. No. 4,093,478 a mix of 1000g AN, 185g NM and 84g methanol is referred to as one of the most powerful ANNM explosives.
    If you use only nitromethane, take something around 250g (220ml) for 1000g ammonium nitrate.
    When adding the nitromethane it would be the best to pour it onto the ammonium nitrate in the blasting container without stirring etc. It’ll sensitize better if not disturbed. But i observed that not all AN may be wetted with the nitromethane, so a little bit of stirring is OK. Seal airtight as soon as possible.
    The ANNM explosive is now ready to use. All you need to detonate it, is a blasting cap. You’ll be shown how to manufacture one now.
    First you need acetoneperoxide or HMTD. I assume you know how to produce some, but i included my method here.
    The pic shows the yield of 40ml acetone & 40ml 30% H2O2.
    Acetoneperoxide:
    Equal amounts of acetone and 30% hydrogen peroxide are mixed in a glassbeaker and cooled to below 10 °C (ice bath, fridge etc.). For 100ml acetone/ hydrogen peroxide mix ca. 30ml 37% HCl is used. Add the acid in little portions over a period of ca. 20 minutes with occasional stirring. If you don’t use an ice bath, put the beaker in the fridge to cool between the acid additions. After all the acid is added put the glass back in the fridge.
    Now it depends on you how patient you are. You could filter the whole shit after 30-60 minutes getting acceptable yields. Waiting for 6-8 hours will reward you with a much grater yield.
    (You can wait even longer, but with 6-8 hours you've got most of the AP and the crystals are still like flour. Waiting for longer will result in larger AP crystals that are more senstitive!)
    To filter add 150ml distilled water to the AP (should be a thick, white slurry) to dilute the acid and make the shit pourable for filtering. I use a normal paper- coffeefilter without any problems. Put the slurry on the filter and wash with distilled water until pH is nearly neutral. Now spread the AP on flat surface to dry. I prefer putting it on a layer newspaper, covered with some tissue. This speeds up the drying process considerably.
    Note:Other peolpe may use different ratios & procedures - this works fine for me. (my fridge is - 18 °C)
    HMTD:
    14g powdered hexamine fuel tablets (hexamethylentetramine) are stirred in 45g (39.8ml) 30% hydrogen peroxide. 21g of powdered citric acid is added to this mixture and the beaker is put in the refrigerator (+ 3 °C).
    After 24 - 48 hours the HMTD cake is diluted with the same amount distilled water, washed neutral in paper- coffeefilter with distilled water. The last wash is made with denatured ethanol to speed up the drying process.
    Once you have dry AP (acetoneperoxide) or HMTD, you need a suitable container. Here a strong walled glasstube is used, 100mm x 10mm (outer diameter) 8mm inner diameter. It’s carefully filled a few mm high with AP. Then the AP is pressed down with a plastic rod. This is repeated until the tube contains ca. 1g AP.
    The tube is filled with ca. 1g acetoneperoxide. Be careful not to use a too close fitting rod to press the AP - the friction could cause an accidental detonation.
    After filling it, remove all remaining AP from the walls of the tube.
    A little bit blackpowder is put on top of the AP. To hold the fuse in place, a piece of paper is rolled to a tube and inserted in the glastube.
    This is the finished detonator. Securing the fuse with a bit of adhesive tape might be a good idea. Insert full lenght into explosive, to ensure detonation.

      AP Putty
      This is a usetul mixture containing both acetone peroxide, and nitrocellulose, I used smokeless powder but you can also use homemade nitrocellulose in this mixture on account that it has been dissolved in acetone and dried so you can measure the volume right, or you could experiment with different weights.if mixed well, this will be more powenul than AP
      materials:
      • Nitrocellulose o smokeless powder
      •Acetone peroxide
      • Acetone
      • Acetone resistant container, a butter container works well. I would try to
      stay away from glass in case or anyining going wrong.
      - stirring rod
      Procedure:
      Measure out your smokeless powder out using weight, and use a ratio of about 60/40 having more AP than NC. Now take the smokeless powder and put it in the container and stir in enough acetone to cause the smokeless powder to be a gel. Next, add your acetone peroxide, and carefully mix it until it is a thick paste, you should not see any sign of AP in the mixture, it should all look black/green (if using smokeless powder) it should look white if using pure NC, so you could always add a small touch of finely powdered charcoal to your NC before you add the AP, so you can tell its mixed well. I continued stirring the mixture for a couple minutes afterwards to get a nice even mix, then I pressed mine between two pieces of 3/8 inch pipe which 1| cut lengthwise, and then once I pressed them together, I used a wooden skewer to put a hole down through the middle, to decrease drying time, then removed the two pieces of pipe and let it dry.

      you need to mix, and no water, bcoz then you get solid version which will never dry.....powder is best, even better if sugar and potassium nitrate is grinded to a fine powder.
      I also like to add few % of charcoal, keeps it more dry and easier to ignite - also, when you mix it, you can see white spots, that is the sugar or nitrate not well mixed, so adding a colour/tint to the mixture is best.
