Well done. ETN is pretty easy to make, and has a high RE factor. It really eats everything around it and shreds it to pieces. If you want a louder bang, and blow more stuff up, you want powdered aluminum that is finer than 100 micron. To set it off better, you want to add some sulfur powder too. Potassium perchlorate, can do a lot, but its hard to attain.

This etn was the "hand pack" density....looked like it was put in the bucket wet after recrystallization and allowed to dry.
Had it been melt casted, it would have had twice the detonation velocity and wouldn't have looked like white powder anymore.

Yes, a time-fuse initiated detonator with around 150 mg SADS and 750 mg ETN was used
@@OctaNitroPyro I found that silver double salts had trouble setting off the ETN. Did you mix the two? I found that mixing the ETN with 1 or two match heads that were powdered gave reliable detonation. I used Christmas tree lighting and a straw for the blasting cap.

@@jeffjefferson2676 really? I use Sads like they do and it works wonderfully when it comes to initiating ETN. While I normally only use smallish amount of ETN when I want to blow something up (1-3 gr), 150mg can easily set it off. I usually fill a tiny snap cap vial with a small hole punched in the lid (I think .5ml) up with Sads and stick a fuse through the hole to initiate the Sads. It works very well and reliably to set off ETN, and could if scaled up a bit, set off some chlorate/AN based mixes. If it isn’t working well for you, make sure your SADS is pretty pure and very dry. If even a tiny bit of moisture is present it can drastically weaken it. Also make sure your ETN is pure.
@@TheFireGoose Dry or not, it was too weak. I used recrystallized ETN, so its very pure. The matchheads made for more reliable of a detonator. The christmas light and a staw is a pretty good detonator, use toiletpaper and parrafine pellets to close the ends off, and some electrical tape. I like electric caps better. 0.15g of double salt silver explosive, and 0.5 gram of ETN was pretty good, but it needed the match head powder before it would be reliable enough. Some 30 gram of sawdust in a baggy, with 5ml of nitroglycerine can set every sort of exlodive off. If you put everything (detonator and booster) in a small vitamine jar it is pretty sturdy. I have not tried adding aluminum powder (smaller than 100 micron) to the sawdust, but it could make for a much more potent booster charge. Ive also read that adding sulfer powder can aid in combustion of ammonium nitrate aluminum and sulfur rocket engines. So it may be worth it to add that to the sawdust too. It should make for some cheap thermobaric explosive. Explosive making is pretty labor intensive. Also be sure that you do not have any hard objects around your explodion that could form a projectile. So no papermache and steel punchings... Its only for fireworks... Not to mention LoRa WAN modules, but these can be very safe for remote detonations, when an arduino is added you can put a password on your explosive. Much safer than a mobile phone.....
So only funy, and not terrorist nonsense, heaven is here on earth. Not in the fantasy.

I have a question though. So when you make your nitroglycerin do you use nitric and sulfuric acid or a nitrate salt and sulfuric acid, and also how much. I recently made some nitroglycerin with 50ml of sulfuric acid and 20ml of 68% nitric acid, and then maybe 2.5ml of glycerin, but when I crashed everything out and went to pippete the nitro, there really wasn’t very much. it seems quite expensive to to do it this way, since I have heard that you only get 1ml of nitroglycerin per 10ml of nitric acid. How do you do it? And is there a more economical way to make it, especially in larger amounts? Thanks :)

Largest ETN detonation on youtube great job. Is it melt cast at max density 1.7g/cm^3? If yes, did you hand press it first in the container and melt it using the classic water bath method?

@@OctaNitroPyro As you can see here th-cam.com/video/OsxeBWkMf30/w-d-xo.html , melt casting it makes a night and day difference in power. It could be quite dangerous to melt cast such a large amount though so i would prefer hand pressed unless you have some kind of pulley system to lower the ETN in the hot water bath from far away and then just let it sit until the water cools and return several hours later. Regarding the actual ETN, did you make it all in one batch, if so, did you notice the fact that when you pour the reaction mixture of batches larger than 30 grams yield in water the water starts heating up, and if you don't use enough water it'll eventually start a runaway, violently emmitting nitrogen dioxide? I've come accross this twice and thankfully i drowned it with water before anything happened but still. I will use like 8 liters of water to crash out the ETN for 120 gram yield batches now just to be safe from that.

Dude nice job, I'm always reading and searching for new articles about ETN, etc. I See certain websites and there research, labeling the makers, as bomb makers and terrorists. It's sad, because these people have no clue! For the amature enthusiasts, this is a major mile stone , in creating something from a common, available substances. This is research , our science as we know it, and take pride in. This is not about destruction, or terror or lawlessness, or to harm anyone. It is about creating something, that when not used for any negative way, allows someone to feel accomplished, gives way for new innovation, whether publicized or not, this is something you have created. In a perfect world, this would not be restricted by law.

It does indeed sound like it would be interesting to see if a flash powder explosion could replicate a nuclear explosion, but it sadly sounds pretty expensive because atleast a few kgs of aluminium powder would be needed. Also there seems to be quite many videos about large flash powder explosions already, so its something I probably wont make.

The oftler has a few videos with absolutely enormous flash powder explosions. I saw a vid where they just took a barrel and filled it with salute shells and it was a literal bomb. Just not in a spherical container. Also large flash salute shells can contain as much as 3 kg
@@dudetapedtoafridge3073 yeah it was big however the explosion could of been better, without all the paper and plastic in-between and rather pure flash would be much better, plus it needs to be in a spherical container with central ignition supported in the air by a platform. Look up on yt "trinity 100 ton tnt test" now imagine a human sized mockup of that using flash. Mockup of a mockup of a nuclear explosion lol

etn is less sensitive than nitroglycerin
In more ways than one, it's _way_ less sensitive than NG and does not cause splitting headaches when handled since ETN *edit-* _is_ -not- a vasodilator, but unlike NG is not quickly absorbed through the skin *-end of edit.* ETN is pretty good stuff actually.
@@TheExplosiveGuy Just a slight correction, etn is still a powerful vasodilator, it just isn’t absorbed through the skin, so it’s safe to handle in that regard. Just don’t nibble on your explosives people, slightly less safe.

They have used it interchangeably with glycerin trinitrate since the 1950's under the trade name "nitroglyn". @@RavenK19 Unless you have a bunch of silly licences, you pretty much always have to make your own detonators. It's really easy though and there are soooooo many ways to do it.

@@RavenK19 if you just do a lot of research and be careful and respectful around energetic compounds you’ll be just fine. I’m completely self taught and now have a very deep and thorough understanding of all things that go boom.
If you wanna start making HE’s I’d recommend starting small and safe, make things like ETN and picric acid for secondary’s. Make things like silver acetylide or CHP for primaries (stay away from organic peroxide’s for now, even though they are super easy to make, they are really NOT for beginners), and if you want you could even try some AN or chlorate based mixes for larger charges. Sciencemadness is a great place to learn things, so is TH-cam. So if you do actually want to get into this, then take some time to do all the research you need then go from there.
That was exciting, do you think 1kg of acetone peroxide is more powerful or 1kg of etn?? The answer to this question is valuable for me.
TATP is less powerful than ETN by about 65% (from Wikipedia)

1 kilo of ETN is much more powerful than acetone peroxide and about ten times safer, don't ever make more than a few grams at a time if at all. ETN is just as easy to make with just as easily obtained ingredients as AP, easier even since the ingredients can mostly be found at the grocery store. But honestly, if you like big charges just stick with ammonal mixed on site, it's far safer than large quantities of primaries and will get you in a lot less trouble.

This was a total waste of resources, money and time. You'd get a bigger explosion just from the AN that went in. In fact, 1 kg of ETN is about 1.2 kg of 80/20 ammonal in terms of air blast (and about a 1/4 of your blast went into the ground). And much nicer fireball. You should have gone thermobaric (~ 30 % Al) or use it on steel/stone to see the brisance.
assuming NH4NO3 and h2so4 are cheap and erythriol costs 10$/kg and aluminum powder costs 20$/kg, then ETN/Al costs 30% less than AN/Al and is 15% weaker thermodynamically, but detonates 2x faster, so ETN/Al has more bang for your buck.
If you just want a bigger explosion you can just use ANFO that is 3x cheaper than both, but if you want a greater velocity of detonation, then it doesnt have any sense to use AN/Al, thats why no millitary or industry uses it, they either use ANFO for breaking rocks, or PETN, RDX, HMX for breaking steel, and ETN/Al is about the same as the latter
@North Stubh I am just saying that the most cost effective thing is using either ammonium nitrate with the cheapest fuel you find, or if you want a higher velocity of detonation, using it to make a nitroester like ETN, if ETN/Al is too sensitive then you can use ETN with any organic fuel, but ammonium nitrate with aluminum is very expensive, and slow, and not worth it just because it releases a little bit more energy
Adding aluminium makes it thermobaric ? But you dont mix them you put the additionnal al on top of the ammonal or it cant go thermobaric

what did you think about a strong flash powder beeing the initial detonator for [ANFO] or [ANSAL] ? I know people are saying that one powerfull detonator wont do the job right ? and that ANFO needs some booster charge. But what can someone like me, who doesnt can make higher stuff than ANFO, use for the booster ? Or the bether question is, what kind of Detonator and Booster can i use for ANFO, which is on the same level or lower than ANFO. ?
