  • It's time to bid farewell to our 2021 Ford Mustang Mach E after a year. How has it held u? How much range has it lost? (spoiler alert, not much) and what are my main likes and dislikes as we prepare for the next long-term vehicle? Let's find out!

    About sales and MSRP - I recently read about Ford threatening franchise dealers with penalties for damaging the Ford brand with severe mark ups. This is huge and I hope more manufacturers follow.

    It is amazing to see that Ford actually took the time to put the GPS active charger utility in the car. The fact that is updates itself and guides you around problem charging stations instead of sending you there is actually priceless. Because your time is priceless. Well done, Ford. I hope for Ford brings out a small entry level four-seater EV with a decent range. But all things considered, this is a damn impressive first start for Ford.

    Dealer tech here: in Oct 2021 the CEO said that they were delaying the rollout of the OTA update for Blue Cruise for early adopters to Quarter 1 of 2022 so that they could work on simplifying the OTA process. On Jan 27 they sent out a notice to dealers saying the OTA update would start rolling out and there are two options for download. One is OTA, where the updates will occur in the background while the customer is driving, BUT some updates will require the vehicle to be shut off to download. It might take several WEEKS once OTA updates start before Blue Cruise is fully functional. The other option is complementary software download at the dealership, which is estimated to take between 2 to 8 HOURS with a dealer computer. Obviously this is a huge update. Either way, once Blue Cruise is activated and functioning, early adopters are getting 1 year of complementary Blue Cruise service.
    Here's the thing, the 2021 F150 is also part of the Blue Cruise program. All 2021 Raptors were built with the Blue Cruise hardware as part of the Raptor trim level. On Jan 27 they also announced that late in software development, they found that the off road suspension and capability of the Raptor didn't work with Blue Cruise to their standard. For unsold vehicles they're sending a updated window sticker that reflects a $750 reduction in price. For sold vehicles they're going to reach out to customers and give them a $750 refund. All other early adopter F150s aren't affected, so if the truck has the hardware, the OTA update will be sent out to the truck. The awkward part is the Raptors will still have the hardware (like the IR camera that watches your eyes) which will sit unused and Blue Cruise just won't be activated.
    Not sure if the OTA delay for early adopters was really because they were simplifying the OTA update process or tinkering with the Raptor and trying to make it work before deciding it wasn't going to happen, or both. I'm guessing both.

    • @FragEightyfive
      @FragEightyfive 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Raptor didn't work with Blue Cruise to their standard" sounds like lawyer speak for "there is a safety issue". Maybe it comes down to the Raptor's setup needing custom tuning and they don't want to maintain a separate branch for that vehicle. Could even be they found the hardware isn't configured properly for it.

    I endorse the tire swap 100%. My F350 has a recommended tire pressure of 75 PSI front, 80 PSI rear, which is simply too high for daily use. Even while towing 5 tons of trailer and tractor it's like driving on beach balls. I don't understand where Ford came up with those numbers, because 60 PSI is my preference and I have never had uneven wear or issues with heat build up or sidewall flex/roll.

After a long 9 years and over 180K miles, it is still 12 miles out of 21 miles in the EV battery when new thanks to Ford not letting us use all of the battery. It's not a great car compared to modern vehicles, but it still runs good overall and I'm keeping it til it dies.

The other big pain point is our center screen needs to be rebooted probably 2/5 times we start the car. Not sure if this is cold weather related or not.

    • @dmandman9
      @dmandman9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In all reality, I think they’re aimed at different audiences. I think Ford used the Mustang as the inspiration and mainly used the name to create attention. But the Mach E seems to be aimed at the person who wants the speed of a Mustang, but for whom the Mustang is no longer practical because he may have children or may regularly ride passengers. Perhaps a person who would otherwise get an Edge but wants something that sits a little lower.

    • @bl8danjil
      @bl8danjil 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dmandman9 So they aimed this Mach E at wannabe people? Nah, the target market would buy an Escape or Bronco Sport if they came out as an EV, the Mustang name wouldn't influence them. They share the same platform albeit modified anyway, so not many would be able to tell any performance differences. This vehicle just doesn't know what it wants to be, it's a crossover trying to masquerade as a Mustang but failed at it. Attaching the Mustang name to it just tells me Ford did not have confidence in their electric vehicle technology so they attached the Mustang name to try and salvage it. When they said we were getting an electric Mustang, people thought we getting a 2 door sports car that would go up against the Tesla Model S. It being a crossover was a large disappointment and largely written off as such. It was only that highly modified Mach E that some builder created that generated the first positive news for it, but that one shared very little with the production Mach E. And only the GT that brought in the performance people were expecting.

    • @dmandman9
      @dmandman9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bl8danjil They’re selling all they can produce and are actually selling more of them than the “real” Mustang. I’m not a fan of them putting the Mustang name on it. But it’s selling. This vehicle is more likely to share an audience with the Model Y. That’s who everyone is comparing it to. As for performance, Fords regular Mustang GT is the one they look to for performance as well. So it was always expected that the Mach E GT would be the performance model. It’s Ford’s first serious effort at an EV. So I believe things will only improve from here.

    • @bl8danjil
      @bl8danjil 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dmandman9 It was the only ev from Ford. If they only sold one type of vehicle obviously that vehicle is going to "sell." Or if they only sold black cars, they could say black cars are selling out. There is just nothing to compare it to in their lineup, which is funny because the Escape and Bronco Sport ride on the same platform.
      I know who they were trying to compete with. It was obvious it was the model Y. That was not my point. They could have slapped the Escape name or Bronco Sport name on it and they would have sold just as many. If they had made an actual electric sports car, not a crossover, Mustang they would have satisfied the Mustang fans too. Instead they got dunked on at launch.

    • @dmandman9
      @dmandman9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bl8danjil If I’m not mistaken , there is an EV Mustang in the works. By the way, it’s NOT in ANY way related to the Escape/Bronco sport. 1. It’s primarily rear wheel drive with all wheel drive optional. The Escape is fwd, The Bronco Sport is all wheel drive but front wheel biased. 2. The Mach e front suspension is virtually the same as the Regular Mustang. I looked underneath. Its basically an extended Mustang chassis wise modified for an electric motor between the wheels. Much like a stretch limo. I didn’t realize it until I went the the Mustang Training class and the instructor showed us a few things. Again, totally different from the Escape/Bronco. As for the ridicule, part of the reason for the name sharing was indeed to create the “buzz” . People started talking that normally wouldn’t. Free publicity. Then people drove it and found even the base version was faster than most versions of the current Mustang. Yes, it’s a crossover. No, it’s not marketed at the same demographic as the regular Mustang. Ford has one thing in mind: sell it. A couple version would NOT have sold as many because people simply don’t buy that many coupes. Coupes are a niche market. So they wanted to make it closer to mainstream If the only complaint against this vehicle is the wrong name, that’s no big deal. Most simply call it the Mach E anyway. . In a few years it’ll probably be officially named the Mach e. And a real Coupe will likely be called the Mustang. That’s just my prediction.
      Again, the Escape Bronco sport have NOTHING in common with the Mach e platform. Whoever said that gave you some misinformation. The Bronco sport, escape and MAVERICK share the same platform.

    Great rundown of your experiences without the cultish devotion that would either have you tend to glorify the Mach-E or denigrate it in service to brand loyalty for another EV maker! I've been following reviews of the Mach-E since test driving a Premium 4EX last summer, and yours have been consistently the most informative.
    This video makes me feel better about not succumbing to the high degree of interest that I had after my test drive and watching countless videos on this and other EVs. I'm old enough to be patient, and my gut was telling me that it's a bad idea to buy the first generation of any new model (or significant overhaul of an existing model). That seems to have been very wise in retrospect because of the growing pains that early buyers are facing and how many changes have already come to the later models. In time, I'm sure the software updates will be normalized, but we live in a society where software is updated regularly and it's made us an impatient lot.
    I don't recall having an issue with the tires on my test drive, but with so much new and just a few hours of seat time, there's only so much to notice. I didn't take it canyon-carving or for an autocross event, so I didn't stress the grip of the tires like others have. While I didn't find the ride at all harsh, I have to admit to really wanting the Magneride suspension just for that extra level of adjustability in the suspension. I don't need all the other things that come with the GT Performance Edition, so the tremendous bump in price cannot be justified.
    In my mind, this vehicle is a great family version of a Mustang. The "not a Mustang" crowd needs to remember that not all Mustangs have been GTs and Shelby models. Not everyone wants that, and not everyone needs that for a vehicle they want to use every day. Perhaps the criticisms of those that want everything, want it cheap, and want it now will persuade Ford to keep paying attention and improve their operations. Tesla didn't come out of the gates with vehicles at the level of quality and performance that they exhibit today, so patience is key. It will be interesting to watch how Ford supports the vehicles that have already been sold, and how it handles the improvements that they should make to future models. It will also be interesting to see if/how the 300-pound gorilla reacts over time!

    Only took about a minute before the flashing turn signal forced me to seek out a small piece of electrical tape to put on the screen - the same fix I used for the flashing 12:00 on my VCR.

    i know it would have added to the cost but another 5" wider (or 3 1/2' wider and 1 1/2" shorter) would have done wonders for the look and some heritage.

    I’ll be interested when I can get an awd one of these for around 35
    Wishful thinking on my part though
    My interest is peaked and idc about the Mustang name and I do like the styling and size and hatchback like versatility. I’m going to give it a couple years and hopefully they come down a little on price and figure out some of the quirks but it’s a great start

    when you changed the wheels and tires the speedomter and odometer is off, right? Unless they are using GPS to correct it or there is a menu to change tire size.

    Is there a correlation between frunks and crash test ratings? Seems it would be beneficial and serve as a longer crumple zone.

    I have an 885 mile trip to the Smoky Mtns. coming up this fall. There is no way I want to stop twice just to recharge batteries. Wouldn’t touch this car.

    Those with Mach-Es (mine's in chip hold after being built) have said that, if you precondition (not just remote start) your Mach-E while charging, it will warm the battery and you'll lose less range for winter.

      this is true, and it’s one of my gripes with Ford for this. why in the world do i need to remote “start” my EV? why can’t i just manually start a precondition cycle? i would love for it to let me hit that button, and tell me how long it will take to be ready in current conditions, instead of just starting up and “running” for 15/30 minutes

      I have submitted feedback asking for the Ford Pass app to be able to adjust the settings for the Climate control module thru the app. To me it just makes sense rather then letting the computer use preset configurations.

    The rear doors don't have a handle because when Ford tested it out, people would open the door without using the handle and would typically grab it up by the button instead of on the body.

    I appreciate your POV on 1PD regarding range/efficiency. In my circumstances most driving is stop and go around town. I use 1PD with its full stop thinking that I am extending my brake maintenance interval. Am I missing something?

    • @AutoBuyersGuidePodcast
      @AutoBuyersGuidePodcast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With an EV with a blended braking system, which is basically all EVs except Tesla, there will be zero difference if you are driving your vehicle moderately. Whether you use the brake pedal or “one pedal” regen is happening until the final end of the stopping event where friction braking is “blended” in.

    Is there a safety factor to having the longer front end? Longer crumple zone seems like it would be better, but perhaps not.

    Thanks for the long term review. We went to a couple EV events and were able to try out the Mach E, Toyota BZ4X, EV6, Lucid and XC40. I had put the Mach E very low on my list, but came away impressed. What we kind of didn't like was the "tacked" on iPad and the panorama roof. I think I can live with the iPad and I see you addressed the roof. Seems counterintuitive to have a source of excessive heat and then rely on the a/c to compensate for it drawing dependent electrons. We still need to look at the Ioniq 5, our #1 and the Ariya, #2, but now the Ford is #3.

    Regarding front trunk and front overhang length. What about safety in a crash? Isn’t likely that a longer “hood” provides a better crumple zone making the vehicle likely to perform better in a frontal crash?

    While I'm not totally convinced by the extra price of my 2021 MME GT, I am super happy it actually shipped with BlueCruise and I've been able to use it for the last 8 or so months (since I got it in early November). I would be very upset with Ford if I wasn't able to use BlueCruise on the MME Premium I nearly bought. One of the big features that the MME is supposed to have.

    A side note for frunks on this older vid: It is does make excellent crash protection. In a front end damage, it avoids damage to the EV system because the frunk is where damage occurs, improving repairability.

    Nice review. I think the Mach-E is the best non Tesla EV out there but a ton of new options coming out now. I still have an issue adding an hour of stops to a 350 mile trip. Even though that's not every day (up to 3-5 times a year for me), unless you can always charge at home it definitely adds to trip time. PS: I drive through WV which is well behind CA and other states in charging infrastructure.

    Alex, how many OTA updates have you received in the last year? Also, how many were fixes to problems vs new features/improvements to existing features? I would love to see auto reviewers provide more in-depth coverage of OTA updates. With many OEMs making a big deal of OTA updates in the marketing of their EVs, most if not all (except Tesla) still seem to far short with software updates that still require dealer visits or releasing very few or no updates at all.

      Most people who are not in the software business have no idea how complicated software is. It takes an army of software engineers to maintain and write new code everyday. Ford? No way, unless they move their headquarters to Silicon Valley and hire an army of software engineers there. Until then, forget about anything decent from Ford, or almost any other legacy automakers.

    Just curious if you did any motor calculations after you changed tire size? Its really not that simple as just changing tires on an engine car. You can def burn out your motor putting to much load and causing it to "overhaul". You have some braking regen to help that but your just gonna burn out your windings....... Please tell me you at least thought about this?

    • @emotionalcontentmediaunltd2267
      @emotionalcontentmediaunltd2267 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also only run 80% of your battery, which none of you know and so they have to make sure you dont use the last 20% or there goes your battery. Its like none of you even understand what an electric car is. Or how it operates. Its NOT a gas engine and ALL the characteristics are changed. I sincerely hope people start to LEARN the differences instead of break things and think its a manufacturers issue.
