      I would add don't work for a bank or be a bank manager, for a armed robbery the preparation is to steal vehicle(s), preferably a Ford Sierra or Vauxhall Cavalier. if you're a police officer and witness or are sent to an armed robbery (or any other crime) don't try to be a hero call for back up, because you're likely to be shot or stabbed. If you're a woman don't get into a car that you think is a cab. If you see yourself on the reconstruction, please call in otherwise you're considered a suspect.

    I clearly remember watching this one when I was 12, because of the the Towler case. I had relatives in Bradford and we went there regularly throughout the '80s and '90s, so I distinctly remember seeing the Hare and Hounds pub in this episode (we used to pass that pub a lot). I also remember seeing the tomato soup mug in the reconstruction - I saw some of those soup mugs in a charity shop the other day and was wondering when the "soup mug reconstruction" would be shown. That minor mystery is solved. Alas, it seems that Michael Towler's murder still isn't. It's strange that, in the intro to the reconstruction, Nick Ross mentions the possibility of a partner of Michael being responsible, but not a homophobic attacker.

    • @MarkPMus
      @MarkPMus 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The “homosexual partner” phrase was used a lot throughout the 1990s. In Denis Nilsen’s case, Carol Barnes of ITN News used the phrase to refer to one of the many hacked up bodies discovered in Nilsen’s flat. She really meant, “victim”. In this case, as you say, Nick Ross really meant “homophobic attacker”. Michael’s case still hasn’t been solved in 2024, according to Wikipedia’s list of unsolved murders. I don’t know how regularly they update that though.

    Helen Gorrie's murder was _temporarily_ solved. John Corcoran was jailed for life in December 1999, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in January 2003 on the basis that the judge had misdirected the jury in his summing up remarks. The police decided not to re-open the investigation and in those days there was no double jeopardy rules in effect. Corcoran had also been charged with the r-pe of a 14 year old girl in 1990 but I can't find any information on that case.
    The Milton Keynes attacker turned out to be then-22 year old Richard Leadbeater who eventually pleaded guilty. He was a family man with young children. Later on, he remarried and in 2001 was arrested for hitting his second wife, at which point the police took a DNA sample. In March they discovered a match and he was jailed for life in December 2001.
    The murder of Michael Towler remains unsolved.

    Helen Gorrie case sounds like a mess-by this point they had already arrested & released at least four men-including her 20 year old brother. Eventually a conviction was obtained in late 1999, but he was released on appeal in 2003-although it seems probable he was the killer, but the trial judge screwed up in his handling of the jury.

      @cdiffuni 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reading up on the case, I'm staggered the man convicted of the murder was later acquitted and released early- looks absolutely certain he was responsible !

      This may sound strange but I know someone who lived in Horndean at the same time as the murder. There was rumour in the area that she was seeing her own brother. Something tells me it wasn't him that killed her as he was left at home when she left her house. Who knows!

    The bit I don't understand regarding the final reconstruction is that the police started surveillance but still missed the attack? Yes they had a big area to watch, but a lot of the attacks including the one they missed happened near the same pub, you would think that particular spot would be chosen to watch before any other

    • @gujh03
      @gujh03 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bradnixon6220He was convicted and imprisoned in 1999. Then released on appeal in 2003, due to the judge making a cock-up when he was summing up before the jury. The police said they aren’t looking for anyone else, but the case remains officially unsolved. There was speculation in 2018 after one of Prof David Wilson’s docos that it might have been Peter Tobin, but not been proven. So yeah, another bungled investigation. Peter Towler from this episode also unsolved.
