      @poadude 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      This dude shows how trying so hard to be nuanced and skeptical of everything can lead you down the path of absolute absurdity. He has so many contradictions in his world view but he thinks his nuance is what is allowing him to maintain all these positions because he doesn’t paint things with a broad brush. He doesn’t understand that logical consistency is not the same thing as circular logic or ideological dogmatism. And ironically, he is suffering from so much motivated reasoning and confirmation bias that he is immune to actual nuance. Very weird but also very scary because I see this as a way many people get lost in these types of discussions.

    • @maximthefox
      @maximthefox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@poadude He's just the classic example of a person who has opinions and finds evidence to support them. He misunderstands what he's read, then mistakingly believes his opinion has been validated. As a result, he vastly misrepresents his 'research' to others, or just outright lies since he's certain he's right anyway.

    • @poadude
      @poadude 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Lewis Brown yeah exactly. I don’t even know if he knows he’s arguing in bad faith, which is kinda scary. This whole “reading the whole study” and nitpicking stats is also really dangerous and I see it all the time from conspiracy theorists or the trump supporters in my family. At a certain point we need to trust some kind of scientific consensus and accept that it is literally impossible to be an expert on every single subject you want to have an opinion on.

    • @maximthefox
      @maximthefox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@poadude I find it weird that your family even bothers to look into things. The people in my family who love Boris Johnson and the Tories don't do any reading to support their opinions at all. They just have the opinions and will make some stuff up about why the think the way they do.

He got out all his points last week, and destiny wants to review and fact-check all of *those* fully formed and legitimately voiced thoughts. If he keeps trying to run the goalposts back to "No forget all those I wanna add these other million points so it sounds like there's still doubt about shit" that need to be reviewed to be proven as bullshit, then destiny is right to declare "Wait you're just full of shit on everything you said last time, why shouldn't I take that into account?" when he tries to force feed more and more stuff into the conversation?

    • @matthewscully3573
      @matthewscully3573 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rocket Relm Yes but you have to remember that going by Destiny’s notes isn’t a fair set up in the first place - Destiny can chose the qualifiers and context included in those, which is why he admits here that he doesn’t recall specific details about certain things Nuance Bro said in the previous video. As you can also imagine it’s also extremely one-sided; Destiny didn’t outline his own statements to fact check and give context to their exchanges. You would have a point about Nuance Bro shifting their goalposts if they went through the whole video and examined the statements step by step but by Destiny’s own admission on stream he wanted to leave his claims about Nuance Bro’s statements un-referenced so that he could rhetorically gain the upper hand - in lieu of actually trying to fairly represent his opponents views with first hand evidence to back up his claims.
      You’ll see in this video that Destiny can make statements and then qualifies them after the fact to clarify - for instance he can say there is no evidence for hydroxychloroquine but then qualify this as saying no decisive evidence, which are very different statements. He also qualifies/shifts the goalposts on the proportionality of Black hate groups, which isn’t something he would let NB do (and his argument is paper thin considering the rates of all types of crime, like terrorism and hate crimes, do not respond to the same extent to the myriad reasons for for crime, i.e. assuming hate crimes would be proportionate to homicide/drug offenses/vehicular crime is disingenuous as hell - which is why Destiny made an appeal to authority that NB has no criminologists to appeal to).
      Nuance Bro should be afforded the same ability in a genuine, good faith discussion. You could make a genuine argument, as NB points out, that Destiny’s plan for the conversation didn’t actually necessitate him being there - merely debunking someone’s points without letting them make any concessions or qualifiers should’ve just been a take-down video.
      You’ll also notice that Destiny refuses to defend many points he made in the last discussion - he outright said everything he said last time was correct and yet basically said he didn’t care to research if his statements on Kirk or the Tea Party was true. For the record I think Nuance Bro was a dumbass for saying the WHO said there was no human to human transmission but a good faith actor would iron man his statement and take the obvious meaning behind it. It’s also quite striking the amount of ad Homs Destiny did - repeatedly inferring your opponent is a Nazi without providing concrete evidence, tone policing and adding embellishments to his “evidence” is not good faith behavior.

    Destiny extended absolutely no charity in this debate and blindly defends the WHO in every circumstance. Here's a couple of examples: NuanceBro did not say the WHO statement regarding asymptomatic spread was made "in late March" as Destiny indicates @37:00. He actually said the WHO statement regarding asymptomatic spread "was made as late as March," which Destiny probably misheard. Since the WHO statement was from March 3, NuanceBro was perfectly accurate. Also, Destiny defends the WHO statement that there is a lack of evidence that masks are protective (or something to that effect). Destiny even demands evidence that masks are effective @38:30 as if there isn't a _massive_ body of evidence concerning the utility of masks in preventing spread of infection. It bothers me that Destiny will die on these hills which are completely indefensible. The WHO definitely f**cked up on multiple occasions--including their statement that there is _no evidence_ that masks are effective in preventing Coronavirus spread. In fact, there is a huge amount of data concerning masks and prevention, and this is common knowledge for many years. Admitting that the WHO f**cked up _doesn't_ make you a right-wing Trump advocate. It just makes you honest. It sucks because I agree with Destiny throughout most of this discussion, but there are several instances where Destiny becomes idiotic to serve a perceived greater purpose of "countering right-wing narrative." It's better to always seek the truth and concede when your opponent is correct, regardless of how ridiculous they may be. Sometimes it's honorable to say "Yeah I was probably wrong here, and I think you were wrong there."

As a result, Destiny was blatantly _wrong_ about certain things in this debate. I already gave the WHO example. He should adjust strategy to be correct of these things rather than taking an opposing position for political reasons.

He gets mad, he yells like a little kid, and assume everyone but himself argues from a political place, and not facts. The earlier "gotcha" style responses about Covid naming were pointless because Nuance already addressed it. Also the late response? Really, a day after was Trump's response time. Nuance is very well researched and he cares about looking into his data. Destiny tried hard to cherry pick opposing sources, but Nuance knew everything too. Anyway, Destiny should put away his ego especially in topics like this wehre he doesn’t have much knowledge about. He’s just relying on his quick thinking. As exposed here, Destiny only reads abstract/conclusions of the study, whereas Nuance tries to digest the whole study. Destiny ends up with confirmation bias and appeal to authority, as he relies on so called ‘experts’ on his chat who are likely biased as well.

      Kevin D. Najera Destiny is assuming that Nuance is acting in bad faith, and whenever he tries to bring up a point, he says it’s a “pivot” to discredit it. How the hell can you say that to someone who is being sincere, much less in a discussion you invite them to??

      RanEncounter please elaborate. Nuance's original claim was that there was no problem with calling in Covid-19, but that there wasn’t anything wrong with calling it the Chinese Virus. However, Destiny strawmanned him by assuming that he WANTS it to be called the Chinese Virus, or that he defends all of Trump's actions regarding Covid. It was terribly insincere of him.

    hey destiny at around 13:15 you claim that people dont want the virus named after their ethnicity but chinese is not an ethnicity. its like saying american (as in from the us) is an ethnicity which is very wrong. there are lots of different ethnicities in china for example uyghur people which im sure you heard of. the biggest ethnicity in china are the han . i think it would be great to be more accurate and not conflate countries with ethnicities.

      As far as the calling it the Chinese virus. I don’t think there is something inherently wrong with that. It is certainly accurate.
      He refused to concede this point. He also refused to admit other stuff gets named based on what or where it came from as if it was crazy to say that.
      I would maybe agree that it’s not ideal to call it chinese virus but like nuance bro I don’t have a problem with it. It’s only not ideal because people are too sensitive not because it’s actually wrong.

    ‪The French study on hydroxychloroquine contradicts the Chinese study. Both are pilot studies focused on viral load and not clinical outcome, and both had a small sample size. If nuance bro wants to prove hydroxychloroquine works he’ll need better studies than these with a larger sample size, longer duration of treatment, and higher daily dose. ‬ Nuance bro was right about one thing you can’t read studies because if you knew how to read studies this conversation would have been much shorter.

    • @nikobates6897
      @nikobates6897 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I understand, Nuance’s assertion is that hydroxychloroquine is “promising”, not outright saying that it works. He brought this up at the end of one of his recent videos, and the way he promoted the info indicates that he was arguing in good faith.
      Regarding viral load, although it probably isn’t as definitive as clinical outcome, can’t it still be used as a metric for measuring the effectiveness of the drug? After all it is used in monitoring the treatment off people with HIV, or at least according to aidsmap.com.

    • @bingbong3643
      @bingbong3643 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Niko Bates That’s just it though, unlike what viral load may have demonstrated for HIV, such studies haven’t shown the same effectiveness let alone promising data for Covid-19. Whataboutisms aren’t proof of anything. It’s good sophistry, but that’s about it. I think this will help you immensely to see how Bro is acting in bad faith: blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2020/04/06/hydroxychloroquine-update-for-april-6

      Chris ewing That is interesting I skimmed the link you sent me, and it does seem to make the case that HCQ isn’t the most effective. Although one of the studies linked did not mention covid-19, so I would want to read that further in depth. Furthermore, his video is from March and your link is in April, so it is POSSIBLE that Nuance hadn’t known about this.
      Honest question, do you consume Nuance Bro’s content? I’ve been keeping up with Destiny and him for a while now, and the notion that Nuance Bro is some sort of liar or acting in bad faith isn’t accurate to me.
