Sandy's pants were in fact vintage according to Olivia Newton John. They sewed her in them due to a broken zipper. She currently owns them and last I heard was auctioning them off for her cancer center.
Sandy's prom dress was also worn by Joanie in Happy Days in the episode where she turns 16 and falls in love with Potsie....... My fav prom dress was the one worn by Frenchy...….it was also used in a show where a girl is killed on her prom night and comes back to life....
My grandma said they DID wear tight pants in the 1950s, however they weren’t sold that way. My grandma (and other “bad girls”) would get the tightest fitting jeans they could find, then sit in a bath tub (fully dressed) of hot water then let the jeans dry to their figure. They also worse jeans so small on the waist they had to lay on their beds and pull the zipper up with wire hangers!
i don't think there's a single accurate thing about the entire film i just suspended my belief for the full thing and pretended it was a fantasy or something lmao
As a historian, that movie, while absolutely epic, was soooo inaccurate in costuming. I know they did this on purpose, but it distracted me a lot because all I kept thinking throughout the movie was "When the heck is this movie suppose to be set in?!" because I'm usually really good at telling that based on the clothing. Greatest Showman had me so confused lol.
Beth Bowen i think if they do an episode on it, they should say it’s set in the 1840’s or 1850’s because queen Victoria is alive in one scene. i think the three main character costumes they should focus on are, P.T barnums circus outfit, Jenny Lind ‘never enough’ dress, and maybe, the bearded lady’s performance dress. i’m saying jenny’s dress because, it seemed very 1950’s glamour with the dress and hair despite being the mid victorian period. and the bearded lady’s dress, the purple seemed to synthetic coloured for the time period.
My grandfather kind of dressed like Danny back in the day and my grandmother was classified ‘good girl’ until after they were married. Then she started wearing tight pants lol.

But he thought that he lost Sandy and that's why he tried hard to become like a jock to win her back. @Sinead Dowling he did more than that. He was trying to change his attitude. Unfortunately it was the bad image that they both ended up keeping by the end. So her change seems more permanent. But then again, after high school, Danny had no one he needed to impress so he probably ended up dropping the bad boy image for her and her parents.

so we’re gonna forget that whole scene of danny trying out sports to change for sandy? then, in the carnival scene he has a letterman jacket, and to top it all off, his attitude has been changing throughout the movie.
People always have to say "She had to change herself to keep her man." But what about the fact that he tried to change himself to keep his woman? Trying to be an athlete? Getting a letter on his sweater? Oh, but none of that matters because "She had to change to keep her man." If it's a guy doing the exact same thing, though, it's okay, therefore, overlooked.
One of them had to change, given that she was a square that didn't really get along with her friends, it makes the most sense that she changed. Just logic
yeah I completely agree. and people don't talk about the fact that Sandy's transformation was supplemented by her friends. they were "bad girls" so they encouraged it. Danny on the other hand sacrificed fitting into his friendgroup to be able to be the man Sandy wanted him to be.
Nitpick: Grease (the stage show) didn't premiere in 1972. It had a off-Broadway run in 1971 before coming to Broadway the next year. Also, in the Broadway show Sandy's name was actually "Sandra D(umbrowski)". They changed it by the time the movie was made, but in the original version the song made more sense.
I really enjoy these videos, and look forward to them every time! I really love how she is incorporating the 50s in her own style, like her 50s nailpolish and the brooch😍
Relationships are about compromise. If you go into every one of them thinking "I'm never changing, I'm perfect as I am" you're gonna be unhappy and alone for a very long time.
Please note, that the denim worn in the movie is mostly stonewashed. In the 1950s there were early examples of that but raw denim was actually the norm. Pre-Washed denim came up later. Raw denim fades different and the jeans are more stiff. The look Brando wears shows a 1950s raw denim cut which was more the common style. Tapered legs like in 9:28 were not popular in the 1950s. One would rather buy a pair of very tight raw denim jeans and 'stretch' them to fit. Or buy a pair that fitted okay and later shrink them onto the body by getting in the tub with them - like our mothers (I was born in 1970s) used to tell us all about.
Dana D In a lot of the other videos, people commented on how poor of an artist they used for the historically-accurate comparison. Seems like they finally found a better one.
Ah, the 1950s. I really love their fashion. The way we dress now, though... today's fashion can't stand a chance to the 50s in my opinion. *edit:* I never knew this would get 70 likes, wow. I'm sorry if I've offended you in any way, or insulted you by my comment. Growing up, I've been always amazed by the 1950s. If only I could travel back in time... and yes, I know that there are different time eras where fashion could've blew up in popularity.
You're both right. 50's was downright classy (minus those horrid pointy bras). 90's is the epitome of comfort. I just wish people hadn't chosen to revive the 80's, of all things.
I’m 24 and I actually love dressing like a 1950s Greaser, like the T Bird guys did in Grease. I really admire the fashion of that era. Some people at school thought I was weird but I thought I looked cool 😎
Thank you so much for this series. Keep it going please!! It warms the cockles of my anthropology major's lonely heart. (My favorite genre of film/tv/books are historical fiction and period pieces and musicals so this is right up my alley.
Have you ever tried a clip-on or screw-on ear ring? I tried some genuine 50s and 60s ones on as a teen because my mom bought and sold vintage jewelry, and they either hurt (if tight) or fell off repeatedly (if loose). Glad I missed this fashion item, but sweater clips were cool.
I think the date is slightly off. Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba" was indeed released in 1958, but the release date is November 15, 1958. That sets the film in, at the earliest, the 1958-1959 school year.
The one that I most notice/wonder about is the hair on the mother in The Christmas Story. Everything else seems to be accurate and then the mother has this wild hair that just seems out of place for a mother of two in that era.
I’m more shocked people thought Sandy’s name was actually Sandra Dee. She legit introduces herself as Sandy Olsen in the film. People don’t pay attention. 🤦🏼♀️
Everyone always complains about Sandy changing herself at the end, when the point of that was kinda showing that she excepted him. And everyone forgets that a large portion of the movie is just watching Danny try to turn himself into a jock for her. That’s y he was wearing the letterman at the end instead of a leather jacket
In high school, my sisters history teacher showed a popular Civil War TV to his class in the 80s, and asked the class to point out inaccuracies. He was not pleased that my sister, who loved vintage fashions and even wore 1920s dresses to class, spent her essay criticizing the 80s hair and make-up.
I'm joining in on the comments about the double standard where folks say Sandy changed for Danny. The opposite is true. She just changed her clothes. He changed his personality, his activites, hung out with his friends less, stopped playing the field and even got a letter in track. All this to "deserve" Sandy. They even sang a song where HE had to shape up for HER. I loved this whole segment but you took me right out when you felt the need to mention that.
There’s one inaccuracy. The leather moto jacket was introduced by Schott. The ‘Perfecto’ style as worn by Brando can be instantly recognized by its star-shaped studs on the epaulets.
At 0:30 she says the setting takes place during the 1957-1958 school year. However, La Bamba did not come out until October of 1958. Therefore, wouldn't it be the 1958-1959 school year?
I’ve never heard they originally belonged to Olivia; only that she owns them now. I have heard they were vintage, so only one pair existed. If they were made for the production, a back up pair would’ve been available. It is certainly well known that the zipper was broken, and that is why she was sewn in (not because they were too tight). They also weren’t Spandex. They were satin. So... where is this woman getting her facts?
Funny because I saw a documentary where she said that somebody gave them to her to wear. And then they ended up giving them to her because they had fitted them to her body. But who really knows the truth.
@@msf1967 They absolutely don't look satin in any way (look at the typical spandex wrinkles around her ankles and up her tights). You can see exactly the same style of outfit on many photos or in music videos form that era.
This gets lost in adaptation a lot, but yeah, the original Grease stage musical was satire and high camp. You're supposed to laugh at how square and/or extreme the characters are. It's basically the Rocky Horror Show with slightly less cannibalism.
I feel like everyone always talks about how Sandy changes herself to be with Danny but he gave up a lot to be with her too. Just for the record. YES, Sandra Dee is a reference to SANDRA DEE, but the cleverness rests in the fact that Sandy's ACTUAL name in the musical is Sandy Dumbrowski. It was changed to Olsen for the film, killing half of the meaning of that song.
also her transformation makeup is less 50s and more 70s... as evidenced by her Princess Leia blush. (there's more, but that is the thing that stands out most). It's very bright, and 50s blush was most often almost non-existent. Great video though! I learned a lot :D

I'm glad you made that observation about the pierced ears. I got my ears pierced as a teen in '66 or '67. It was just becoming popular then. No self respecting teen would get a piercing in the 50s. Rachel DeRosier wasn't Philip's father who said it to aurora's father? I mean, when the kings were talking about the wedding 😂
Philip mentions it too when he tells his dad about Briar Rose, he tells his dad “you’re living in the past, this is the 14th century,”. I think King Herbert repeats the line when trying to King Stephen that Philip doesn’t want to marry Aurora later on in the movie.

Sandy's pants were in fact vintage according to Olivia Newton John. They sewed her in them due to a broken zipper. She currently owns them and last I heard was auctioning them off for her cancer center.
Yes they sold at auction early this month for $162,500.00. She still continued even in interviews for the auction that they actually were 1950s pants.
I really thought that said “Sandy’s parents” lmao 😂
vintaged a size (or more) too small then
so i'll say i'm surprised she didn't burst a seam during filming

Who else wish they checked out the historical accuracy of the prom dresses instead of the "good girl" look? Still a great vid though😊
Sandy's prom dress was also worn by Joanie in Happy Days in the episode where she turns 16 and falls in love with Potsie....... My fav prom dress was the one worn by Frenchy...….it was also used in a show where a girl is killed on her prom night and comes back to life....
I loved the "Beauty School Dropout" pin. Wonderful small touch.
Erst Wilder! I’ve seen her wear a few 😍
My grandma said they DID wear tight pants in the 1950s, however they weren’t sold that way. My grandma (and other “bad girls”) would get the tightest fitting jeans they could find, then sit in a bath tub (fully dressed) of hot water then let the jeans dry to their figure. They also worse jeans so small on the waist they had to lay on their beds and pull the zipper up with wire hangers!
why don’t you fact check The Greatest Showman next?! i think there’s plenty few inaccuracies in the film, despite being so good
i don't think there's a single accurate thing about the entire film i just suspended my belief for the full thing and pretended it was a fantasy or something lmao
Yess I love that movie but it is so inaccurate 😂
@@bethbowen5903 saaaaaame. I couldnt watch it.
The "Grease" in real life for sure...
17:34 it's also the same with stranger things, everyone but the main cast is accurate

@@lh1681 It's because things that we associate with a decade aren't always accurate. We often have an exaggerated iconic image of a decade's look, rather than accurate one.

12:20 didn't Danny change to keep his girl as well? or are we just going to look at the girl changed for the guy.
Yeah he was wearing a jock jacket to try to become what sandy would have wanted... But every just focused on Sandy's transformation...
Because not a moment later he went back to being himself
Yeah he tried to become an athlete jock and spends a lot of time in the film being berated for it
Well I always took it as that Danny was always that kind and nice guy he just pretended to be a jerk for his stupid friends. But he thought that he lost Sandy and that's why he tried hard to become like a jock to win her back. And Sandy knew that even though that Danny was a nice guy deep down because you know she knew him over the summer prior to the school year starting that the only way that she would be accepted by his crowd was to change. But in reality Danny was always a nice guy he just pretended to be A jerk.
@@RexTheDinosaur1 it could be that Sandy always wanted to be a bit of a bad girl. I mean every one once in a while wants to experience being bad.
The movie actually takes place in the school year 1958-1959 because in the Broadway show they refer to the Rydell High graduating class of 1959.

Sandy's name in the musical was Sandy Dumbrowski, AKA Sandy D as well.
i'd love to see an appearance of the 50s up to 70s make a return in fashion.
well, older fashion is coming back. bet 50's and 70's will come back more
No one's saying you can't wear such styles yourself. Who knows? People like you might bring that fashion back into the public consciousness.
Ryan Hazley fun fact: fashion recycles itself ☺️ fashion today is based off of 90’s fashion, so I think next will be the 80’s
It has already came back. It been around for several years now. I have a couple of fifties style dresses that I got online a couple of years ago. I have an crinoline skirt to go with it. I have also seen patchwork jeans, and tie dye shirts, bell bottoms as well. I also have a peasant top and a pair of patchwork jeans. You just have to pay attention to what people are wearing nowadays.
@@heylol4119 80's fashion came back this year. I have seen a lot of neon clothing. 50s-60s clothing came back about five ago. 70s clothing came back last year.
I appreciate the depth your historian gives both to the clothing history but also to understanding the adaptations for costuming. Very insightful!
Danny tried to change to suit Sandy too. He started doing gym and wearing letterman jackets.
R.I.P. Olivia Newton-John. You will always be Sandy. Nobody can ever take your place as such an iconic character as Sandy Olson.
Fact check Gone With the Wind!!
Dude, danny had to change, too. Why do people forget that?
Sinead Dowling .... bruh, he spent months trying to impress her and she just threw on some tight pants lmao
@Sinead Dowling he did more than that. He was trying to change his attitude. Unfortunately it was the bad image that they both ended up keeping by the end. So her change seems more permanent. But then again, after high school, Danny had no one he needed to impress so he probably ended up dropping the bad boy image for her and her parents.
fatalrob0t B/c boys are lazy! He just wore a sports blazer instead of his leather jacket. (In typical T’Bird style, like the bumper, it was stolen.)
@@JulsLittleBeirutAnarchy except he changed his personality and his outlook on life over multiple months. He tries out for sports starts hanging out with other groups, stops being ashamed of her, goes out of his way to impress her. Not only that but then he tells her that she doesn't have to change who she is and how she dresses even though it's hot she did. I mean he literally tells the boys that he's sorry to leave them permanently but she means too much for him to lose her and they support him.
Who's lazy are the people who chose to not remember the most iconic part of grease. The bad boy gone good
Yeah, kinda like Gift of the Magi. Sandy changed to be more like Danny while Danny changed to be more like Sandy, meeting in a happy medium.
so we’re gonna forget that whole scene of danny trying out sports to change for sandy? then, in the carnival scene he has a letterman jacket, and to top it all off, his attitude has been changing throughout the movie.
she changed because he tried so much to change for her...
@@haydenf4031 thank you!

The best fashion historian you guys have had!!! Bring Raissa Bretaña back please!!
Or buy a pair that fitted okay and later shrink them onto the body by getting in the tub with them - like our mothers (I was born in 1970s) used to tell us all about.
they finally got rid of that terrible artist my god

I came here to see if anyone noticed! I think they deleted the comments about it on the other videos.

I personally think that 90s grunge is great too.
You're both right. 50's was downright classy (minus those horrid pointy bras). 90's is the epitome of comfort. I just wish people hadn't chosen to revive the 80's, of all things.

The Outsiders would be a fun one to do! The story took place in 1967 and I wondered if the Greasers and Socs fashion was the same or different.
You guys should do Cry-baby.(1990)
yeet yeet yes, I love that movie!
I love this video so much! Can she come back to talk about the Rizzo?
I'm joining in on the comments about the double standard where folks say Sandy changed for Danny. The opposite is true. She just changed her clothes. He changed his personality, his activites, hung out with his friends less, stopped playing the field and even got a letter in track. All this to "deserve" Sandy. They even sang a song where HE had to shape up for HER. I loved this whole segment but you took me right out when you felt the need to mention that.
I love this historian and her Instagram is amazing!! It’s interesting they switched the musical setting of 1950s Chicago to Los Angeles in the movie.
I JUST FINISHED THE OTHER LIKE 5 VIDEOS IN THIS SERIES TO COME AND FIND THIS ONE! I LOVE ITTT!
There’s one inaccuracy. The leather moto jacket was introduced by Schott. The ‘Perfecto’ style as worn by Brando can be instantly recognized by its star-shaped studs on the epaulets.
I got a bunch of my grandmother's costume jewelry when she passed and it's nice actually knowing what some of the previously unknown items were for.

At 0:30 she says the setting takes place during the 1957-1958 school year. However, La Bamba did not come out until October of 1958. Therefore, wouldn't it be the 1958-1959 school year?
Fun fact: the black pants were originally Olivia’s when she was younger.
Skylertracy anotherone the zipper broke before they filmed the scene. That is why they sew her in.
JustKell oh wow!
You should do one of these on Happy Days since it's also about the 50's and made in the 70's.

He ended the film with a sports jacket for her and told his friends they had to accept her. I think it was equal too and they met pretty much in the middle. Maybe Sandy gave a little more but still they definitely both gave things up to be with each other

Sandy’s black outfit is inaccurate mainly bc Olivia Newton John picked it out herself
Just for the record. YES, Sandra Dee is a reference to SANDRA DEE, but the cleverness rests in the fact that Sandy's ACTUAL name in the musical is Sandy Dumbrowski. It was changed to Olsen for the film, killing half of the meaning of that song.
I’d say it killed way more than half.
