- I styled 3 outfits inspired by the popular fashions of thirty years ago! From the hair metal rockers and groupies, to blazer-clad working ladies and teen pop idols decked out in acid wash jeans, I had a great time pretending it was 1987 and exploring fashion history through one of the most iconic decades - the 80s. The long straight hair made another comeback in the 90s and nowadays it's either short or layered. The 80s really had the largest hair, makeup, and style selection out of the entire 1900s.

neon an leggings were the thing though..maybe the earlier 80's but she got the more classic passable styles...;-)
my parents were teens at the time, and bright colors and neons were HUGE trends in high schoolers and college aged people, but people underestimate the influence hair metal had on fashion. also, most people wore similar clothes to today’s; jeans and graphic t-shirts. My mother and I were talking about this earlier; trends cost money, which most people either weren’t willing to spend or did have. most people didn’t and don’t follow trends to the extreme (though all clothes are influenced by trends, like how the color and cut of jeans changes every few years) for price or insecurity reasons, so casual graphic and button up T-shirts with jeans were very common.
neons usually came in through jewelry and accessories, again for money reasons. it’s a lot cheaper and cost effective to get a pair of neon pink earrings you can wear with most anything than a full outfit in neon

Born in '83 here. The working woman look was how my mom dressed when I was growing up 🤦♀️😂😂😂 And the teen look is what I rem my babysitters dressed as and I too wore the shoulder pads! They put shoulder pads in EVERY CLOTHING!! I had both acid washed jeans, jean jackets and matching skirts with matching jean jacket outfit. Me and my BFF were twining at school in kindergarten one day. All the teachers thought we were so cute! 😂😂

The 1980s are my favorite decade fashion-wise (at least) because of how diverse and unique the non-work outfits were. Neon, pastel, tracksuits, acid-wash denim, huge earrings, high ponytails, big hair, mullets, jelly shoes, bucket hats, Converse, Keds, leggings, stirrup pants, leg warmers, slouch socks, chunky plastic necklaces, multi-color eyeshadow, etc.
And all in various combinations, matched or mismatched! It's like the 'dress like your fantasy' Hippie style of the 1960s, only Up to Eleven! Totally tubular! :D

The way you did your makeup and hair in the first look genuinely makes you look exactly like my mum did in the 80s. She was in her 20s then and in her younger pics you genuinely look like the spitting image of her. I showed her you in that look and she said it made her feel nostalgic. She was also happy that I said she looked like you haha

I asked my mom what she thought and this is what she said
"No guy would be caught dead in the Flock of Seagulls hair. Maybe Robert Smith from The Cure. Head-to-toe acid wash was reserved for magazines and the dweebs who were trying to hard. Ditto on the mismatched accessories in the hair band look. Other than that, pretty darn accurate."
This comes from my mom who was 15 in 1987.

Mismatched earrings were huge in the metal scene, which is what she was going for, often because multiple ear piercings that were more common in the metal scene too. I was a teen metalhead in the 80s and I purposefully mismatched or friends would trade earrings so each of you had one. Earrings almost as best friend necklaces because each of you had one.

A lot of my clothes are 80s leftovers. I absolutely loved the decade. I even have a Swatch watch collection from back then, and they all look and work just fine. I have 47 of them. I listen to mostly 80s music as well. (Jan Griffiths).

yeah but they did it on the ugliest t-shirts I've ever tried on. I would rather wear the 80s ones that the weird sleeveless monstrosities I've seen fairly recently in stores. Though I've also tried a modern toned-down prom dress which looked pretty authentic. I feel the new-80s trend that came with Stranger Things passed too soon, now it's 90s-00s fashion again and I'm still too traumatized about having to wear it in my teens to enjoy the ride with genZ girls 😆Why couldn't they wait until their big sis or moms forgot how it was to wear massive shoes, veryyy low waistline on jeans, and belly-button revealing crop tops, before making it come back lol

I was born in '87 and a lot of these trends still trickled into the early 90s. Acid wash denim separates, crimped hair, denim jackets, shoulder pads, big scrunchies, high top shoes (I know some of those weren't mentioned, yet iconic nonetheless)... As kids we didn't get perms but we begged our moms to use the crimping iron on our hair once in a blue moon so we could have a fun 'do for a few days.
born in 89 here, my mom liked to crimp my hair, which made me look like a poodle, which my classmates bullied me for so I didn't exactly understand the appeal at that time LOL (and still don't honestly, though I like the perm and thinking about getting one atm)
This is what i like about her. She passionately put a lot of effort, research information or something etc about the video that she want to make. Also, she has the best, unique and innovative video ideas. I have been her fans since she was make a Ladylike series with her bff Freddie when she was at buzzfeed.
