I used to work for Harrods in the mid-1970s, before they converted the basement into selling space, and in those days you could walk through the tunnels to Trevor Square where all the ouwards and inwards store deliveries were made. It was particularly handy if you just wanted to disappear for an hour or so, you just told the floor manager that you had to investigate an 'export delivery query'. Frankly, although the store was faded and needed refurbishment (it was owned at the time by Sir Hugh Fraser of House of Fraser, who managed to gamble away most of his shareholding), it was much more pleasant and easier to walk around as the store was designed in such a way that you could walk through each department in a circular fashion and never really get lost; today, it is an ergonomic mess full of endless coffee shops for tourists with the ground floor resembling an incomprehensible maze.
I literally said "yay!" when you ended at the Grenadier. My husband and I got lost in Knightsbridge trying to find it years ago. It was so worth it. Such a lovely pub. Thanks for another great walk!
Norwegian fan here. I grew up with a pair of anglophile parents. They were right, especially when it come to London. These tours are just amazing and a guide every time I visit ( two, three times a year).

another super video for a Sunday afternoon. and I LOVE the music of Little Lost Lou. Did you know in the sixties Harrods also sold a lion cub to two Australians. They kept it for a year before eventually sending it back to Africa to be released into the wild with the help of George Adamson of Born Free Fame. it is the subject of a fabulous video on you tube where the two Australians are reunited with the lion in Africa and it remembers them. incredible scene!!

30% of inner London accommodation is single occupancy. I used to be one of them. These videos I think are great for people who may be alone through a weekend while living in London. They give a guide to exploring an area, and then you can fill in the time with going into galleries, sitting outside a cafe/ pub and people watching, hitting a museum etc.
I worked in the old warehouse at Trevor Square for a Christmas as a 19 year old...now they have to drive stuff in much more frequently from some warehouse outside London . Shame Harrods got rid of the Georgian restaurant,my mother took me there when I was a kid too! The saddest part about modern Knightsbridge is its change from a mainly British neighborhood and how many lovely backstreet pubs that have been lost and turned into Mcmansions...theres been a big loss of character!
The government are definitely not annoyed about the qataris not paying council tax. They facilitate industrial scale non payment of taxes by the rich. Another excellent guide as usual. Give this man a tv show

Thanks Joolz! The Park Tower Hotel was built on the site of Woollands, on the Knightsbridge side, and Baydon Court, on the Lowndes Square side. Baydon Court was a former garconniere block. We lived there in Flat 3A in the 1960s so I know that view of HN! Also, round the corner in Williams Mews there was a famous murder in the 1930s (some drunk heiress shot her lover and got away with it...) and George Harrison and Ringo Starr lived there for a short time in the Beatles era.

Great video! So interesting backstory on the Brompton Road Underground station - The book "Butler to the World" by Oliver Bullough explores how the City of London is geared towards money laundering, reveals that Boris himself was lobbied for many years by someone who wanted to turn it into a tourist attraction and managed to convince said Mayor to get the station put up for sale by the MOD. BUT the station adjoins the home of a Ukrainian Billionaire who bought the station from underneath the promotor under the premise of building luxury flats - which were never built. The assumption being he bought the station to protect his space. The book is well worth a read, unless you plan to enjoy a holiday or are easily angered!
I know that this is such a select area of London, Joolz, but there are so many surprises on this particular film of yours. The buildings have architecture that are so exquisite. The architecture of virtually every building on each street that you cover is so stunning. The added extras like the ornate coal-hole covers, and two stunning, closed and still apparent underground stations is beyond belief. There's certainly a lot of wealth of the highest order with the property prices in the area, and some of the most expensive cars parked up as well. The Michelin building apart from Harrods is an amazing building. Packed with your information about this district, this is another gem of a video, and many thanks. Take care.

I used to work in Knightsbridge and would often visit the Nags Head in Kinnerton Street for a swift one before going home. I wouldn't say it was small, but If there were three people in the front bar, it was a bit of a squash.
I was in the UK just last week and popped round Old Barrack Yard for a drink in the Grenadier... went to visit an old friend on Old Barrack Yard only to find out he'd passed away some years earlier... this video brought a tear to my eye and smile to my face.. thank you Joolz.

Hi Joolz Thank you so much for this tour around a very familiar corner of London to me, as my husband family lived in the area since the late 1700. His parents lived in Draycott Avenue, His grandfather worked for the Pantechnicon and lived in the mews in Kinnerton St near the Nags head. There is a big church in Hans place where his parents met, The Hyde Park station building once was Pizza On The Park. I walked around the place a couple of years ago, had lunch in the busy Pavillion Rd. Lovely! Again thanks for ALL your videos that I watch from France with so much pleasure and nostalgia for London that I loved for fifty years.

Excellent video Joolz as always. My Great-grandfather was a coachman in the late 1880s and they lived part of the year in Ennismore Mews. My grandmother was christened in what was then All Saints Kensington (now a Russian Orthodox Church I believe). There are so many questions I wished I’d asked her before she died when I was 17.

Hi Joolz, first of all I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. I'm telling you in case you didn't know, or in case another Argentine compatriot of mine hasn't done it before, that in Buenos Aires the British opened the first March 31, 1914 and only Harrods branch outside of London, it started with about 47,000 square meters at its inception until it reached 55,000 meters. The one in London has 90,000. In Buenos Aires it worked until 1998. The enormous building still stands in the center of Buenos Aires, unfortunately abandoned with its ornaments and English green shutters. The brand remained in the hands of an Argentine, while the English one was bought by an Egyptian group, then by the royal family of Qatar. We all have the fantasy that one day it will open, but given the economic situation of the country, it is a utopia. It was the same as in London, it was for the aristocracy and wealthy people. It had a large carousel, its own printing press, its own chocolate factory all within the same building. The owner could reopen it if he wanted to, but it would no longer belong to the same group, because I repeat, the current owners are Qatari. Huge hugs and greetings from Mar del Plata (where there was also a small branch of Harrods) Argentina.
The sculpture you saw on the Brompton Road by Charlie Mackesey, he is the man behind the phenomenally successful book, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse. The short film based on his tale won him an Oscar too, not many sculpturers with an Academy Award, I imagine!

Was in London when the pandemic was just setting in and couldn't get to Harrods, HN etc so thanks for the overview. My sympathies on the loss of your mom. Nice work, Joolz. There's so often a poignancy to these videos. Speaking of Wilde, just a few days ago I finished reading Picture of Dorian Gray, and near the end, he connects Gray to all of London with the verse: "What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?" It would seem that by surrendering himself, Wilde didn't forfeit his soul. Cheers.

I lived in South Kensington in the mid 70's and regularly shopped at Harrod's food hall as all the fresh produce was reduced at the end of the day. Harrod's boasted that they could get you anything but a shop called Leslies' Stores in the Highland village that I was sent to school in had this motto in their window - "If you don't see it ask. If we don't have it we'll get it. If we can't get it you've had it"!
I was only down in Knightsbridge on Friday afternoon to meet my niece for tea...a very lovely stroll all around too and we made it down to South Kensington.
London is an amazing city lots of architecture it’s crazy lots of gardens there’s a church everywhere it’s unbelievable I could spend my life visiting London
@@johnperkins4611 yes they brought people from all over the world with no education they don’t speak English not even a single word I saw some phenomenon ! Same in France where I live they brought migrants and gave them houses and cars and jobs while people from France who studied and speak France have no rights now I feel ridiculous in front of those people ! I saw a month ago in London a couple brought from Morocco dressed with djellabas not speaking English at all given a council house and allowances while English people are in hostels ! What the authorities are doing what’s the matter with them ?

The horse trough shown in this Kensington video was dedicated to the horses killed in the tragic IRA bombing in Hyde Park in the early 80’s. ☹️

I used to work in Knightsbridge and would often visit the Nags Head in Kinnerton Street for a swift one before going home.
I wouldn't say it was small, but If there were three people in the front bar, it was a bit of a squash.
I was in the UK just last week and popped round Old Barrack Yard for a drink in the Grenadier... went to visit an old friend on Old Barrack Yard only to find out he'd passed away some years earlier... this video brought a tear to my eye and smile to my face.. thank you Joolz.

My favorite of your presentations. Lots of quick bits of history. Great choice of areas to cover. I’m an American, living in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest. All we have is forest trees and mountains. No beautiful architecture, nor notable history.

Hi Joolz Thank you so much for this tour around a very familiar corner of London to me, as my husband family lived in the area since the late 1700. His parents lived in Draycott Avenue, His grandfather worked for the Pantechnicon and lived in the mews in Kinnerton St near the Nags head. There is a big church in Hans place where his parents met, The Hyde Park station building once was Pizza On The Park. I walked around the place a couple of years ago, had lunch in the busy Pavillion Rd. Lovely! Again thanks for ALL your videos that I watch from France with so much pleasure and nostalgia for London that I loved for fifty years.

Excellent video Joolz as always. My Great-grandfather was a coachman in the late 1880s and they lived part of the year in Ennismore Mews. My grandmother was christened in what was then All Saints Kensington (now a Russian Orthodox Church I believe). There are so many questions I wished I’d asked her before she died when I was 17.

Hi Joolz, first of all I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. I'm telling you in case you didn't know, or in case another Argentine compatriot of mine hasn't done it before, that in Buenos Aires the British opened the first March 31, 1914 and only Harrods branch outside of London, it started with about 47,000 square meters at its inception until it reached 55,000 meters. The one in London has 90,000. In Buenos Aires it worked until 1998. The enormous building still stands in the center of Buenos Aires, unfortunately abandoned with its ornaments and English green shutters. The brand remained in the hands of an Argentine, while the English one was bought by an Egyptian group, then by the royal family of Qatar. We all have the fantasy that one day it will open, but given the economic situation of the country, it is a utopia. It was the same as in London, it was for the aristocracy and wealthy people. It had a large carousel, its own printing press, its own chocolate factory all within the same building. The owner could reopen it if he wanted to, but it would no longer belong to the same group, because I repeat, the current owners are Qatari. Huge hugs and greetings from Mar del Plata (where there was also a small branch of Harrods) Argentina.
The sculpture you saw on the Brompton Road by Charlie Mackesey, he is the man behind the phenomenally successful book, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse. The short film based on his tale won him an Oscar too, not many sculpturers with an Academy Award, I imagine!

Nice work, Joolz. There's so often a poignancy to these videos. Speaking of Wilde, just a few days ago I finished reading Picture of Dorian Gray, and near the end, he connects Gray to all of London with the verse: "What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?" It would seem that by surrendering himself, Wilde didn't forfeit his soul. Cheers.

I lived in South Kensington in the mid 70's and regularly shopped at Harrod's food hall as all the fresh produce was reduced at the end of the day. Harrod's boasted that they could get you anything but a shop called Leslies' Stores in the Highland village that I was sent to school in had this motto in their window - "If you don't see it ask. If we don't have it we'll get it. If we can't get it you've had it"!

I was only down in Knightsbridge on Friday afternoon to meet my niece for tea...a very lovely stroll all around too and we made it down to South Kensington.

@@johnperkins4611 yes they brought people from all over the world with no education they don’t speak English not even a single word I saw some phenomenon ! Same in France where I live they brought migrants and gave them houses and cars and jobs while people from France who studied and speak France have no rights now I feel ridiculous in front of those people ! I saw a month ago in London a couple brought from Morocco dressed with djellabas not speaking English at all given a council house and allowances while English people are in hostels ! What the authorities are doing what’s the matter with them ?
