Covent Garden Juicy Debauched History Romp - London Walk

  • A more extensive London walk around Covent Garden looking at the history, vice and how it almost got destroyed to make way for a motorway. The Covent Garden Trust ensure that this will never happen again and asked me to talk about all the great buildings in Covent Garden and the debauched, fascinating, important, historical events it has seen down the years.
There's the British Communist Party, Winnie the Pooh, The Queen's toilet and plenty of prostitution.
A trip to the London Transport Museum, Samuel Pepys, The King and his mistress, Casanova and Oscar Wilde and the invention of the police force.
Of course Covent Garden wouldn't be the same with the entertainers.

I thank the local people for saving Covent garden from what could've been a truly unforgivable. A motorway! To what? There'd be no London to visit if they had their way.

I love Covent Garden and when my eldest daughter grew up she said she would buy me a pint... So not one to refuse such an offer I took her to the Punch and Judy where she duely keep her promise but declaring that this must be the most expensive pint in the whole of London. I think not but she hasn't bought one since! Great walk - loved the Opera House armourer!

What's it like having such an amazing camera guy?
Our local musician who also saved the historical town of Jerome is Maynard James Keenan. The other day on Facebook, people confused Maynard with Marilyn Manson. Maynard didn't need the whole town to explain how much, we love and respect him to these folks. But, the town felt that was the treatment, he deserved.
This weekend there is a gigantic and loud American Biker festival in 'Old Town.' I walking around the biker festival, strengthing out my new boots in a long green cotton summer dress. When a man from Canada stopped me and said, "You are not one of them ?!!?"
I said, "How could you tell?"
He replied, "Because you are not wearing a costume."
I said, "That is the most accurate description of my life, I've ever heard....thank you."
He then asked me to a hippie spiritual drum circle,
I declined due to the fact, that I don't wear costumes.
    ----
I would love for you and your trusty cameraman to visit me in Jerome.
But, I'm afraid, I will not be wearing a costume.
    ___
I hope you had a wonderful vacation.
    Glad you are back.

06:45 I loved The Sweeney, but for me John Thaw’s portrayal of Inspector Morse will forever be his most iconic, not only for the gravitas he brought to the role, but also capturing perfectly the eternal struggle of holding on to our pasts against the endless tidal waves of an uncertain future. I don’t know if you get the chance to read these comments Jules, but it would be nice if you could stray further afield and give us a guide to Oxford one day.

I loved this brilliant video of Covent Garden! A walk down memory lane for me! Sad that I cannot be there this year. Many a pints and ciderrrrs were had at The Lamb and Flag when my cousin had a tapestries shop in the main market level indoors during the late 80's. Before the new building was built (1999 ) I couldn't understand why she got up and moved to Milton Keynes? Ugh!

Joolz, Good to have you back! The Alfred Hitichcock film Frenzy captures Covent Garden at the end of it's fruit and veg market days. Perhaps, you could do a tour of some famous film and TV locations? I spotted some locations from your fav, The Sweeny, on Google Maps.

    • @timothyrobson3325
      @timothyrobson3325 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I had a summer job there as a road sweeper just before the market moved. Fantastic atmosphere. Michael Crawford (some mothers…..) used to come round to chat with his friends in the flower market. The sweepers used to dump the waste in front of what is now the transport museum. Three times a day a bin lorry would come round and myself and another guy would shovel it into the crusher. Most of the day we were free to pick up odd jobs. I learned the phrase “ There’s a drink in it for you”.
Our canteen was in the basement of the building across the alley from what is now the museum. In the other part of the basement was a recording studio. Glam rockers Sweet were there. Nice guys. Then Breton folk band with Alain Stevel. Aloof and arrogant.
The film Frenzy, as you wrote, captured perfectly the atmosphere of the market in those days.

They have trolleys, trains and buses from all over the world, including a trolley that once ran in Blackpool in the UK. They have the trolley that once ran through my town, long before I was born. This particular trolley, my father, uncle and another friend, stole this trolley when they were teenagers. Yes that’s right grand theft trolley.

Joolz, every video you do is gold, but this has to be the pinnacle, the absolute pinnacle. Never have I felt so absolutely giddy about watching anything. My thanks to you, to the Covent Garden Trust, and to every wonderful person who participated. Covent Garden is truly a treasure, and London (which is a city of treasures by any measurement) is so very lucky to have it!

'To Gild refined Gold - to add another hue unto the Rainbow!' Jules does it every time - but this time there's more gilt on the gold than ever! Now, bethinks me, where did I dig up that quote? Ah- Ha- Spokeshave! Another fine Londoner for sooth!

I have been going through withdrawals from not having a new Joolz video in weeks lol. I’ve now successfully completed a 5th time watching all of Joolz videos lol
Thank you for all that you do sir.
    Cheers mate

Another absolute belter. Nice one. I love Covent Garden...but I think you missed my favourite memory of the place. It's the setting for one of Hitchcock's greatest films....Frenzy. Fantastic film that really shows what it was like in the early '70's... if people haven't seen it...highly recommended.

Another entertaining and informative snippet of London and its history. Love wandering round Covent Garden. A pity the Cove has closed - was a great spot (with superb pasties) and far less crowded then the P&J!

Hi Joolz, thanks for the great video and for bringing back good memories. Some years ago I was in CG and heard a wonderful voice, thougt it was James Taylor. Terry is really great, recognised him instantly as I heard/saw him in your video. Regards from Germany from someone who misses London very much.

I saw Terry busking shortly after my father passed away. I was so sorry I couldn't have brought Dad to hear Terry. Still my favourite London busker. Dad would have loved him, too. Thanks for sharing his music on here. Great tours, by the way!
