  • Did you know? Of the 7 chickadee species in NA 3 of them have 2 songs, one being the whistled Feebee song and the other being a call known as the gargle call. Only the Black-capped, Carolina, and Mountain chickadees use these two songs. The other four species don't.

Ya know, I would love it if one day you develop a t-shirt and mug that have photos of your treasured blue jays with their names underneath their pic, and or one with photos of multiple species of birds like blue jays, chickadees, nuthatches, finches etc. I almost made myself a shirt with my own photos but I would love to give to you instead. Unfortunately the shirts you have available are a bit too cutesy for my taste. I don’t want that to sound negative because that isn’t me. I just wanted you to know I would prefer real bird photos. I’m sure if I want it then I’m not the only one.🤗

Lesley have you ever seen a chickadee drink humming bird food? I have 1 fledging chickadee spending more time at the hummingbird feeder then at the sunflower & Niger seed feeder. Yesterday he drained it and before I could refill it the hummingbird got emotional and attacked the fledgling with me in the middle, lol I had to intervene and fill the feeder fast, lol I never seen a chickadee drink nectar before, have you heard of this before? A chickadee with a sweet tooth?

Almost 100,000 subs! I saw/heard something really interesting with my bird buddies recently. I have lots of species that hang out in my backyard. The newest additions are a cat-bird couple. They are the jazz singers of the bird world and they like to imitate different sounds. My chickadees are friendly and stay close by when I am outside. I give them chopped walnuts and pecans, they know I'm their buddy! Anyhow Bertie (dee) was doing his fee-bee when very close by we heard a very loud FEE-BEE with a different pitch. Bertie kind of jumped out of his feathers and looked at me like "whhaattt?" I'm like "I don't know, dude!" Bertie rolls out another fee-bee, to be answered by FEE-BEEEE. This time I catch it, it's one of the cat-birds! He is 6 ft away, looking all pleased with himself. Bertie has figured it out as well. He curses and swears, a double or triple gargle, and flies into the tall cedars. Cat-bird then jumps into the bird bath. I don't know if it was a deliberate imitation or just random mimicry but I think cat-bird punked Bertie!!! That's OK Bertie, I meowed at cat-bird to mess with him a bit.

Adorable! I've noticed, when filling up their feed ball with black oil sunflower seeds, they love to watch and comment. Two in particular use this call, but it has a bit more of excitement or louder twill at the end, and also brings even more of their tribe in They are all black hats will even land on my hat waiting for me to get my hand out with seeds. Incredible personality and heartwarmers. Thanks for another wonderful peek into their lives.

I have two kinds of chickadee, the Black-capped and the smaller Chestnut-backed, and over fifteen years or so, I have seen three chickadees who were hybrids of the two species. The Chestnuts are ridiculously friendly. When I am working on my laptop on the deck, sometimes a Chestnut will land on the monitor and watch me, staring at my face. They are very easy to hand-tame (it was really their own idea) and they often linger on the hand and study me curiously. They have a call like "SOOT-sweet" that they use as a greeting, including to greet me. And they have a lot of complicated "gargles." Never heard them make anything like fee-be, though.

I got to see a brood of 4 Robins take flight from the nest, and I personally saw the last 2 join their mom or dad and a few other older robins at the top of a 40 foot pine for their first flight to join their elders. I had off and on, tossed worms from our flower beds to the male? (it was the smaller of the 2 parents) I think, maybe Lesley knows which is larger. However, they were livid when I came out while the little ones left the nest, I pursued one baby out of the neighbors garage and put her back in my yard because we have no pets that would harm them and are enclosed. After that, it took an hour and I watched it fly up to the tree, and 3 other robins converged who could fly well, so I think they were mutually supportive of each other's families. There's another nest somewhere close by, they watch me for worms and bugs I toss them, and I also have flicked cherries out of the seed bag for them. They love those. I provide seed for the other birds so they can have an easier go at it during nesting, not just the winter. In the city of Columbus Ohio, we get Chickadees in the winter feeder for about a month. Mostly the darn invasive english sparrows, some cardinals, some of the european red headed sparrows are around and can stand up to the english sparrows, but that's it. And we get a small woodpecker. That's it for the city.

    Hello @
LesleytheBirdNerd .. I have noticed over my decades of Birding that the "Phee-Be" call is used more in the Spring in my Area, The Bruce Peninsula. It appears to me that more Single Birds/Males?? use it to call in a mate. I have tried this several times in the Spring , and almost always get a Bird to land near me to investigate, with no Aggressive calls or actions from them. Just Curious, Happy Birds wanting a new friend. Some will even land on me trying to find the "Caller" !!. Great Work Lesley and thanks for Sharing !!...P.S.>> I would like to add that sometimes the Call is Modified, in my area, to a "Phee-be-be"

Hi Les. Thank you for all of your wonderful work. I have learned much from your videos. Your insights are remarkable. I live near Ann Arbor Michigan and we have Chickadees that sing for us around our feeders and yard. They make all of the sounds you recorded for us in this video. They are very bold and get close to me, especially when the feeders are empty. Interestingly I have seen every species here that you have where you are. They seem to have a huge range. My grand father came from Prince Edward Island, sort of in your neck of the woods. Best wishes, Ted N.

Lesley...I gave a Kids story about the Chickadees, their calls, languages and how to communicate and warn others to dangers....So everyone in our church knows where I'm learning awesome info re the birds...Lots of people in our church are in to nature.
I also make videos of my own birds and they always include a link to your website.
Recently had Evening Grosbeaks arrive...YIKES...noisy messy birds, but LOVE them.
They arrived early Mothers Day morning...one female scout arrived, enjoyed a few sunflower seeds I had in special feeders I had made just for them....30 lbs black oils seeds later, they flew the coup and today only one or two left and I'm sad...BUT apparently they chased away
my Chic'aVees...and Nuthatches...i'm sure they'll be back soon as now the American Gold Finches have arrived. I'm a dedicated bird watcher/feeder, but I'm not savvy when comes to names...I've identified over 70 species over the years we've lived here, edge of forest, have a nice size koi pond w 2 waterfall features, w small upper ponds the birds LOVE splashing around in. I can't imagine life without my feathered friends.
I'm trying to set up my going LIVE with music playing on my piano and birds just outside the windows...I feel so blessed to live where birds love to come visit EXCEPT the Blue Heron...grrrr. I don't mind them nabbing a small goldfish or two...BUT 60 of my huge 8" long Goldfish...also have an American Bald Eagle here every so often...don't mind them either...
and the noisiest, squakiest bird i've ever had come visit...Belted King Fisher. That bird tried attacking me when I came near HIS feeding pond...was funny...But it was gone before I could get my camera out...then a week later it returned and I got just a few seconds of it squaking...
I've told others that if the birds could spread a bad virus to humans...I'd rather take my chances as life without birds wouldn't be as wonderful as it is now.
Thank you for all you have to share.
Can you tell me about the Evening Grosbeaks? And where the heck do they go?
I'm not sure if we could handle them being here months on end...the 2 weeks they've been here has been very noisy!...and huge messes...I clean the special feeders every few hours, sanitize, then fill with more sunflower seeds...also having 20 banded PIGeons...i told friends if we feed them well enough and things get bad...we'll have some squabe for dinner...NOT.
We're mostly vegan diet around here....so...

I clicked on this video so fast. I always watch your videos when I'm feeling down. I think chickadees are my favourite bird, with the junco coming in second.

    Nice captures, sound and picture.
I am in search of an explanation about one sound produced by Corvus corax. I look around for more than 20 years now and never found any recording of that sound anywhere and I am not equipped to record such sound. I have asked the question on few youtube channels now with no feedback whatsoever. When I listen at official recordings from Cornell or Smithsonian I found nothing like it at the time. I live in southern Quebec, half way between Montreal and Ottawa in the small mountains we have here. Around my place it is mostly mixed forest with a lot of lakes and rivers and many cabins. That sound now : it is a deep low sound (I first qualified this sound for myself as a sonar beep only in low pitch) the feeling is always they are probing for something, once each 5 to 20 seconds, and a single note. To my ears it is like the farthest left note on a piano. I hear this sound done only by birds gliding or slow flight mode alone at an altitude 1,5 to 3 times the canopy. Those birds were always alone, flying in straight line as much as I can see, crossing roads, patch of forest, rivers, swamp... I do not know if it can be heard from a distance, like a kilometer, because I heard it shortly before I see the bird and few seconds after they pass me. Flights were mostly following the valley's sides, one or the other (they are not parallel) It is of some interest to me since it is the only place I've heard that sound. If you have any kind of info to help me understand or confirm this, I'll be so happy.

    • @amandawilcox9638
      @amandawilcox9638 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@debrahouston2884 In western Oregon, we have scrub jays (pretty, but boring, imo) AND Stellar Jays; blue to blue- black, with a crest. They are gorgeous, and have a funny, amazingly rude, bossy vocabulary.
If you set up camp near a nest or feed source, you'll hear it! Love 'em. I talk back.
      Can't help it! 💕🐦
