      Took me a while but I succeeded also. I started by sitting near a feeder quietly until they started to come and go. Placed seed on a close table and they moved closer to eat. Finally I left my hand with seed in the palm and they came and perched to eat the seed. Minor motions would not cause them to bolt. Made me feel like Francis of Assisi.

    I can’t get over how adorable Chickadees are; I have always loved them! Just yesterday I had one of my “regulars“ follow me from the feeder I was removing to fill, to the platform where I was filling it, back to where I was hanging it, chittering all the way! I didn’t even have it secured when he was on it grabbing his seeds! LOL Thanks for another great video!

      Last week we brought the feeder inside to fill it and forgot to bring it out for a few minutes. The chickadees seemed to let us know this was shoddy service. There were so many loud calls we went over to see if there was a cat or something and realized we'd left the feeder inside. We have been trained! Now the feeder gets filled outside!

    While relaxing in the forest a chickadee landed in a branch just above me and did it's normal call chickadee Dee. I replied by saying fee-bee. Soon there were two and then four and then 10 and as many as 20. I felt like the chickadee whisperer.

    We have several Black-capped chickadees that frequent our bird feeder, especially now during the winter. I notice they tend to show up at the same time as the nuthatches and the titmouses (titmice?), sticking together in groups even with other species of birds that have similar size and habits. They are amazingly bold, I've had them take seeds from the feeder while I'm in the process of filling it. Love hearing their complex calls while I'm outside near the feeder tree, these are my favorite bird that we get here. It's hard to get a photo of them though, they never stick around, always just grabbing a seed and then taking it away somewhere else to eat.

    • @rogerscalf231
      @rogerscalf231 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Titmouse or titmice, the name is so dumb, because they are not small rodents attracted to female breasts. I call them Pete. AND ask any random person the difference between a chipmunk and a titmouse, and as they shrug, I inform them one is a bird!

    Lesley, I loved this video! These videos must take so long to film, edit and narrate. I wish I had the passion, patience and skill that you have. • @ziawhite1740
      @ziawhite1740 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there 👋, if this is still on your bucket list you should totally do it. I got mine to start feeding from a scoop in my hand in about a hour, however it’s easier to get them to do it if you temporarily get rid of any feeders that you have up as they will just ignore you and go to those. Hope this helps!

    • @treewalker1070
      @treewalker1070 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They'll do it, just be patient. Try staying outside with them and putting food right next to you on a table or something. Once they are coming to that, put the food in your hand. Like Zia White says, take other feeders away *at first* -- but once they start hand-feeding it won't matter if there are feeders around, they seem to enjoy hand-feeding and do it by choice. They only hand-feed in the non-breeding season, though. Best time to start is the winter.

    Thank you for the chickadee vid, my favourite! Do you know if chickadees recognize faces? The other day when I just got home from work, I grabbed a handful of walnuts from the back porch and went out back to hand feed my little darlings. Well, they were acting weird. Making a combo seet/gargle sound. I spoke to them like I always do but they seemed unsettled. They would fly close by but not land. Then I realized....I was still wearing my mask! I ripped the mask off and within seconds they started landing on me. The mask muffled my voice as well as hid my face so I don't know which one, OR both, upset them. To help them with sleep, I bought 'roosting pockets' @ Dollarama, lined them with alpaca fur/hair and hung them in the tall, thick cedar hedge bordering my property. I also have feeders so everyone is well fed. I love all my birds but chickadees are my favourite.

    • @LesleytheBirdNerd
      @LesleytheBirdNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Glad you enjoyed. They are just little darlings. I love them too
      About your question. Yes, I do believe they can recognize faces. A few summers ago my mate for life came out with me and one of the chickadees, Tiny was there. He put his hand out and she landed on it but wouldn't take anything and instead stayed there for a very long time for a chickadee completely fixed on his face. The way she looked at him as if taking in every detail was the most sweetest thing I ever seen. Her mate was there too, Tim and he would not take a seed from my mate's hand. Even though they learn to accept new people fairly easily and feed from their hand, at first the chickadees will behave differently toward the strangers I bring with me on the rare occasion. They are incredibly smart

    1st I love your video's , they are always informative and accurate. I'm a birder and love birds , have lived where I'm at for 20 yrs now. I've been feeding the birds that come to my yard for 20 yrs also. The reason i have done so is that I have an Indian Ring Neck parakeet and a Green Cheeked Conure , I buy them food and they both are kinda picky eaters, so every other day when i change their feeders. They have seed that doesn't get eaten. So I put it in a small barrel. I add it to the food I buy for the outside birds. So nothing ever gets wasted. I have 6 chickadees that come to my feeders everyday. They are awesome to watch. Ty Lesley for all that you do

    There are some simple pleasures in life that I would have a hard time living without. Hearing distant chickadee calls on a crisp winter morning, with the snow falling gently, is one of them. It would sadden me greatly to have to move to a different continent (or a heavily urbanised area) where I couldn't hear my dear feathered friends singing and communicating with one another every time I stepped outside. Of course, there are amazing birds all over the world, and I'd familiarise myself with them no matter where I moved, but I fear it wouldn't be the same.

    I love my Carolina chickadees. I used to live in upstate NY (black-capped chickadees) but now live in Tidewater Virginia and started feeding my wild birds seriously when the pandemic started. Before then, I traveled so much I did not want to start something when I could not keep up a routine. I love my birds so much and cannot imagine life without them. Observing the chickadees and tufted titmice, you can tell they are related because of their similar behavior. Anyone who really wants chickadees should put out live mealworms! I have them in a caged feeder that excludes large birds, and have very happy chickadees, bluebirds, and Carolina wrens. I love watching them get plump as winter approaches!

    One question I have... You are supposed to clean out your birdhouses every winter. However, chickadees do not migrate. Will they move out? Do I just not worry about cleaning it out? I'm guessing I will just have to watch and see if they leave or not. We are so ecstatic that we got these little guys tho! Now, I just need to sit in my lawn chair, near the nest, with a bunch of sunflower in my hand!

    Interesting fact about the curled tails, will be looking for that from now on. I had a pair use a nesting cavity last summer that I made out of a cedar log, I am wondering of the chances they use it again. When I checked the nest in late summer, it appeared as if they had been successful. They seem very secretive during the nesting time of year, and I was sometimes wondering if the were acutally around.

    Hey Lesley! Another awesome bird video- I really love these sweet little guys.. something about them being around makes me feel more cheerful. 😊 One of my favourite birds here in Canada(I'm in NB), is the Mourning Doves! I am a huge dove/pigeon lover and love seeing & feeding these guys in my backyard! Would you be able to make a video about Mourning Doves? Take care!
    Edit: Also, the information on where these guys sleep at night during the Winter is amazing!!

    I loved your video! I was also curious if chickadees had a different intonation to their call when they are excited or happy? When I go to put food in the theaters they seem to have a different excited call and they do stick around in the tree until the feeders are full! They are such dear little fluff ball's!

    Barn swallows are fascinating. I feel that they would be a great addition to your videos and presentations. I'm not too certain whether they are common in NFLD, but they are definitely present in SW Nova Scotia and other areas of the province.

    My mom and I adore your channel. We're beginner birders in Northern Colorado and there is a lot of overlap between your backyard birds and ours!
    As for a video idea...Have you made a video about different nest types yet? I think it'd be cool to learn about the different ways common birds nest (i.e. in cavities, building cup-shaped nests, mud nests, hanging nests, etc)
