GREATLY appreciate the video. Have a 5 year old Alienware 18 with serious overheating issues and this video gave me the info and confidence I needed to tear it down, clean, and repaste. Could not believe the sorry state of the stock paste.. problem solved!

@@nes999 You should! Just follow the video very carefully and be delicate and it will be fine :) Also be very mindful of the small chips on the GPU and youre good! :)
Absolutely fantastic tutorial, thank you for the effort you put into this; I never been able to use any overclock on my Alienware without a BSOD/thermal shutdown during or shortly after startup, this never really bothered me, it was only until recently I was having consistent and reproducible thermal shutdowns when trying to use a CPU intensive application (VisualSFM in this case), with the laptop shutting off within about 4 seconds from starting processing inside the application. After diagnosing and logging a few metrics, I could see the CPU was rising from the mid-80C's to 100C in only a few seconds, with the fans not even attempting to kick-in to stop it, at least not in time. I stripped it down while following your guide, cleaned off the HORRIFIC paste job that came from the factory, and seriously, 2/3rds of the CPU had no paste, and the GPU's had great splodges with portions of the die missing paste, with all chips having far more splattered around the chips that you'd think someone did it with a cake-frosting gun.. Applied Liquid Pro to the CPU/GPU's, reassembled, and my load temps have reduced from the t-max, 100C, to hovering around 85C, or a ~15C decrease, there's more of a decrease in idle temps which now setting into the mid-50C's, but I didn't have a good previous record to compare since load were the ones that were causing me problems. I've even been able to finally try out the OC-1 level overclock, with OC-2 remaining stable for me as well. Again, many thanks for the tutorial :D.
Thanks a ton for this guide, I have repaired and built desktops for a very long time but was apprehensive about delving into expensive laptop hardware. I noticed performance issues about a year into using my Alienware 18 and decided that repasting it was the best solution, and your guides made it a breeze:)
Thanks for the vid, man. I was troubleshooting my M18 (random shutdowns) and finally tracked it to CPU temps going bonkers. I figure it had to be either a dead CPU fan or bad CPU goo. Your vid helped me get the re-pasting job done quick and easy. Thumbs up!

hi there, im wondering if you can still use the laptop without the battery attached? i mean the power is from the power brick straight to the electric plug
Adding liquid metal to the heatsink separately... Bad idea. There are those little capacitors around the actual gpu chip, if your metal liquid decides to make contact with those, you got yourself a very fried laptop. Only add thermal paste on to the chip, you dont really need to even spread it because the pressure will.
I mention this I'm pretty sure. I knew how much was going on. That's why I said I'm moving it to the middle so it spreads evenly. By adding a super light layer to the heatsink it allows the very little extra to spread within that sheet of liquid and it stays where it needs to. I do agree if you dont know what youre doing and add too much then yes this is exactly what could happen. But dont worry I've done this tons of times :)

Thank you for this! I have an M18xR2 and the graphics card on it spontaneously fried right in the middle of Elder Scrolls Online. X) Smoke even billowed out the back, it was all very dramatic. Haha thanks! I was wondering if anyone would mention the Wonka quote. No worries about the screws, you get used to the size of them and know where they go after a couple times of disassembly :-P. I definitely think it was just part of a bad batch of cards. That, or a bad new driver that Alienware has been putting out. Its been quite a struggle to find a good driver that runs this card at its potential and doesn't over heat the thing. Number 2 I would say it was the stock cheap thermal paste that comes with the cards itself... Definitely crap stuff that you need to replace :-P It overheats way to fast with this stuff on it. I'm surprised that it didn't thermal power off before it fried... Something wrong there... As far as my graphics cards, I had a bad batched primary card that would artifact a green line on my display. I contacted Alienware and they tried everything but the graphics card to try to repair the problem. Instead of sending me a new graphics card they decided to send me a whole new computer with the same specs. I definitely saw that they used the new (better) batch of cards as they are blue chips. I kept the new model and then re thermal pasted them right off the bat. (hence the video.) I haven't had a problem since! :)
I have spent day looking for a solution and when I went to go open my laptop to disconnect the battery (as someone had suggested in the comments) I realised my keyboard cabel was never plugged back in from when I disassembled it
Thanks for showing how to get the keyboard off. I really hate this computer though, I’ll never get a dell/billgates/intell machine again if I can help it. Uhm okay, so i bought my new Alienware 18, but the light intensity between the two light strips below the speakers is not the same.. the right side is normal, but the left side is dimmed. Yesterday, the Dell technician came and replaced the left light LED cable. And the result is.. it is bright but still dimmed compared to the right light strip. And now i still have to wait until the next call from dell.
Ohhhh I see. Yeah, I had problems with my first graphics card. No worries! Dell will keep at it until you are satisfied. Maybe its the right LED that is letting to much light pass through.
But i think the right LED is the proper looking one, i mean it is exactly the same as it shows on any other Alienware 18's. Yesterday, if i'm not mistaken, the technician told me that this is not the problem with the LED small cable, but instead the problem of the left light strip itself. A full Alienware 18 barebone replacement might fixed it, i don't know. Also, the LED light line is attached to the Alienware 18's barebone, right? ( I hope you can understand my english ) XD
so tell it pls Factory paste from dell worse or not so ? it is about 4 months passed after using alienware (buy it) and i dont like my temps on gpus.. hard games - 85 - 87*c How old is this machine in your video ? THX i addet this 1 to fav coz going change paste too -.-
Sasha Kazunin Going from my own experience? Definitely change the paste if you haven't by now, mine was layed down like a three year old with a potato gun, the amount of excess paste around the chips could have properly pasted about another 5 laptops.. Mine does sound a bit worse however since my idle temps were close to what your load temps are, even so, you should benefit from clearing it off and replacing it with something quality :).
When you dissasemble the keyboard from the laptop I didnt see what cable connected the keyboard to the laptop. Even un your reassemble video you just dont show that. Is there a cable to connect from the keyboard to the laptop?
Yes the disassembly section is there. Its one of the ribbon cables underneath the CD drive. :) Just pay attention to this area of the dissasembly and watch for the ribbon cables. :) Hope this helps!
also 8:45 shows where the ribbons were attached to the keyboard on the bottom right of the screen. Those big ribbon cables were the ones attached to it. As long as you get those out you'll be good. :)
8:47 shows the other ribbons you took off in the 5:09 step. The two small ones :) Anyway, that should solve your question! Hope that helps for real this time! :D

Also liked the tape and screws idea, pretty cool way to organize!!!
I see that you haven't used Cool Laboratory liquid pro thermal paste before. In which, you DO have to spread it as thin as possible :-P Anyway, Thanks for giving the advise for those that don't already know already :-P (I already use the method you described for other pastes.) Thanks for watching :)
***** I can second this, the liquid pro 'paste' (which gives a totally incorrect impression of the consistency/behavior of the material) is unlike anything I've used before, you really do have to paint it over the surface gradually and carefully. Another reason not to slap a rice/pea sized drop down and hope for the best is that this 'paste' is a room-temperature liquid-metal alloy, and so is extremely conductive, with many surface-mounted components very close to where you're applying it, leaving it to spread on its own could cause droplets to go somewhere they shouldn't and short-out nearby components.
I broke the ribbon cable and the clip that holds it in place that you showed at 5:30 and said didn't need to be removed (I'm an idiot I know) where could I buy a replacement? Please someone help me out I'm desperate trying to find the replacement lol
Biotic there should be a ton online. Just count the number of pins on the ribbon cable and search for ribbon cables with that amount of pins. Also check the orientation of the blue tips on the cable and make sure they are the same as the cable in the computer.
@@PestVic It doesn't need to match the specs written on it? The one I broke is something like AWN 20706 105c 60v VW-1, I looked up on ebay and amazon tons of those but I can't find one with the same pins, it's 30 pins I believe.
@@PestVic and yeah the orientation was alright, I just broke the pins trying to force it in place since I broke the clip which I need as well, I was desperate thinking I had broken the computer when it didn't turn on... lol

Hi, wondering if anyone can help me? I had to replace my motherboard and screen and opened it up as few times. However, in the process did something to the keyboard? The p button does not work, both the letter's A and S are stuck, if I type one or the other like a it comes out as. So somewhere I have damaged the plugins and need to replace it. But I am unsure what i need to replace? Any suggestions or advice would be helpful? Typing out this response has taken me about 5 times as long as it should. Beyond annoying!.
Did you happen to pull on the ribbon cable when you took it off? Could of got damaged. Check both sides of the connections. If it doesn’t work you’ll need to replace the keyboard assembly
PestVic Thanks for your reply! This is driving me nuts. I actually recently replaced the entire top keyboard plate with a new one, as one of the home buttons cracked. Did not solve the problem? Figured it must be one of the many plugins ghat way damaged? Just don't know which to replace? Which actual ribbon are you referring to? Or which plugin is it? Your paste replacement vidro was excellent. I know nothing about pc intrrnals. That madd it easy. So cheers for that! Thanks again for your reply.
K S hmm.. yeah I would assume that one of the connectors are damaged. It’s whatever connector the keyboard connects to. Check both sides of the ribbon cable. Make sure you don’t see any kinks in the wires at all.
PestVic Thank you again for your replies, I really appreciate your help. Is it the thin gold ribbon, the blue/silvrr next to it or one of the 3 white ribbon grouped together? I had replaced the whole top board so I know it has to be coming from the internals, rather than the keyboard assembly. And sorry, one more question, where eould I dource the ribbon, I am guessing Dell would havd a supplier? Couldn't locate any from google or ebay? Thanks again mate, greatly appreciate your time and knowledge. In case it is not obvious, I am a total noob when it comes to this sort of thing. Cheers!
Hmm, I'm not to sure. I haven't had to re-paste in a long time. When I do ill find out for you. I cant remember what site had the cables but if you call dell they will let you know where to source them. You might be able to buy a extended warranty and make a claim. They should send a tech and they will do the replacement for you.

***** Save yourself and the hassle by going with the 4910mq hits 3.9 ghz
It should be the same heatsink shouldnt it?
its almost been a year since i got my 17 but i rarely game.. so how do you know when to repaste? temp monitor?
Yeah monitors are the best, if not, do your fans run a lot?
nah cause all i play is runescape lol
Haha what else do you do on it? If you aren't using it heavy then no worries. If you do fun it hard then by now would be a good time :)
So.. where is the location of the light strip? ( the lightning below the front speakers ) thanks
I never really saw a spot to look at it easily. I know you can get to it though. Maybe I will look into making a video. What happened with yours?
THX i addet this 1 to fav coz going change paste too -.-
The stuff that came on this computer was pretty much useless. i got mine late last year
Sasha Kazunin Going from my own experience? Definitely change the paste if you haven't by now, mine was layed down like a three year old with a potato gun, the amount of excess paste around the chips could have properly pasted about another 5 laptops.. Mine does sound a bit worse however since my idle temps were close to what your load temps are, even so, you should benefit from clearing it off and replacing it with something quality :).
Awesome video man. Nicely explained and good quality. Good work
Thanks! It was hard to keep it a shorter video but also detailed. Glad you liked it
Guy.. can the cpu be removed to install in another MB or is it sodded on.. thanks
Looks removable via a small screw lock. :)
thanks
When you dissasemble the keyboard from the laptop I didnt see what cable connected the keyboard to the laptop.
Even un your reassemble video you just dont show that.
Is there a cable to connect from the keyboard to the laptop?
Yes the disassembly section is there. Its one of the ribbon cables underneath the CD drive. :) Just pay attention to this area of the dissasembly and watch for the ribbon cables. :) Hope this helps!
5:09 is the timestamp. As long as you get all these disconnected the ribbon under the CD drive it will disconnect the keyboard :)
also 8:45 shows where the ribbons were attached to the keyboard on the bottom right of the screen. Those big ribbon cables were the ones attached to it. As long as you get those out you'll be good. :)
8:47 shows the other ribbons you took off in the 5:09 step. The two small ones :) Anyway, that should solve your question! Hope that helps for real this time! :D
@@PestVic @PestVic Thank you so much man!!! I really appreciate it. I just bought Artic Silver 5 Paste for my processors (CPU and GPU) I'll do this on my own. by the way nice tutorial man, I admit I feel a bit scare to do it, but doesnt look so hard. Also liked the tape and screws idea, pretty cool way to organize!!!
Reassembly and Temp video will be up in a day :)
Another reason not to slap a rice/pea sized drop down and hope for the best is that this 'paste' is a room-temperature liquid-metal alloy, and so is extremely conductive, with many surface-mounted components very close to where you're applying it, leaving it to spread on its own could cause droplets to go somewhere they shouldn't and short-out nearby components.
well said :)
@@PestVic and yeah the orientation was alright, I just broke the pins trying to force it in place since I broke the clip which I need as well, I was desperate thinking I had broken the computer when it didn't turn on... lol
@@astaroth5024 Yeah its probably best that you find the same one, but, a ribbon cable is a ribbon cable. Most likely just having the same amount of pins will work just fine
I broke that also 😂
Hi.I have a Dell Alienware 18.I open it from inside to clean the dust but now it's not turning on anymore!!! I need help pls
What all did you take apart?
@@PestVic RAM, HDD, SSD, SLI Cable and the 3 fans for the CPU and GPU
@@PestVic I tried to reset the CMOS by removing it for 5 min and place it back again but still nothing
@@PestVic Do you think switching the RAM places could cause to the laptop this issue?
@@dxbdxbdubai4004 You did remove the battery before you did all this correct? You didnt list it i your process?
Can anyone tell me if IC Diamond 24k is a good thermal paste for both CPU and GPU? Specifically looking for Alienware 18 because I got one too
I will have to try this :)
They should send a tech and they will do the replacement for you.
decent teardown.
m18x is more of a challenge to pull apart :P
I wish I had one! Would be fun to learn :)

I cleaned it in the sink and now it wont work ......
Kahler Nygard hahah :-P
I just sent you a message on Facebook - could you please respond when you get a chance?
+Hassan Mahmood will do :)
+Hassan Mahmood I just saw a friend request but no message?
+PestVic Weird - I'll resend it.
Take a shot every time he does an unnecessary jumpcut
All of it was necessary, otherwise there would be a ton of pauses 🤣
you are so cute ;___;
Umm, thanks? Haha
Anyone in the South West of the UK does this for money?!
I promise if you follow this video, make sure power is drained completely, and are very delicate with the cables, you'll be completely fine doing this yourself. Its not hard, just tedious and time consuming :)

Шо пари го даваш брат ?
brother give money? huh? If you mean did someone give me money for all this, no, I got it all myself :)
Dude! Clean your desk... Damn O.o
Lol! This wasn't my desk, I did it on a table in the living room. Does need cleaning though :-p
