I totally agree with everything you said in this video. The combo of acotar and crescent city sort of feels cheap to me.. and a bit unoriginal. It felt like she’s saying crescent city needs the acotar crutch to be successful when it doesn’t. Idk I wish they were independent of each other :/

Thank you for mentioning The Horn thing!!!!! Right from the start that left such a bad taste in my mouth, even before we realized the tattoo was The Horn. I was like “what kind of bff makes their wasted friend get a whole fucking back tattoo?!”

You make a lot of great points in this video and I totally agree with them! In regards to Ruhn, i could see him being related to Azriel, but for me what made sense connecting him to Rhysand (besides his looks which I never would have made that connection in my head) was that Ruhn must be a daemati like Rhys and Feyre but just not using the same wording.

I think that Brcye was in the second book too overrated. She needs the power from other people to fight but in the end she is the princess that stopped everything. She just wanted to find more information about Danika but totally forgot that Hunt is suffering so much and no one is talking about it! He just accept it because everything turns around her. She is a great thinker and plans really well everything but she isn’t a warrior.

I finished it last night and at first was thinking "yeah, I loved this book except for the end." But then I literally thought about it all night long and realized I rolled my eyes so many times while reading it, which never happens when I read a book by SJM. I got annoyed at Bryce, was not as interested in her or even her relationship with Hunt. For me the other characters carried that book. Also, completely agree with you with that crossover. I was actually getting mad while reading that last chapter. I just don't understand why she had to do that! I liked that Crescent City had a completely different world from ACOTAR but I wanted it to stay that way. Why should I have to read a different series to understand what's happening? (I did read the ACOTAR books and I love them but man, WHY?)

Does anyone else think it's weird that Cormac didn't teach Ruhn to teleport but taught Bryce? Like Ruhn had shadow powers just like Cormac, and Bryce only had starlight? It seems weird?

I also feel that the "because it was foreshadowed, it wasn't random" argument is kinda weird because foreshadow can manifest in various ways (hence many different theories and headcannons). Like the situation with Baxian, his odd behavior could have been explained by many other things besides what SJM gave us, and I feel that extends to many aspects of the book as well.

Great points made! The first book was a favorite of mine and I don't like that she's mixing these worlds right now. And the "mate" thing seemed so left field...I don't remember it being a big thing in the first book at all. I liked that this world was more urban and modern...mixing it with ACOTAR threw me off. I accidentally spoiled myself and saw the "Hello Bryce I'm __" but I didn't see the name. So I thought...oh shit someone that died came back without memories?? I wa so wrong. lol Also, I'm still mourning Ruhn and Hypaxia. I've been rooting for them since book 1.

Finally made myself finish this book after weeks of trying to get through it…. So glad you’re here validating so many of my feelings 😂😂
I want Hunt to find someone else who doesn’t drag him into things that are just way too much…. I felt like Bryce didn’t understand his past well enough to make the decision for the both of them that they were guna do this. Let this man live in peace. At one point I was hoping that maybe they weren’t end-game lol
By the end of this book I’d completely lost patience with Bryce. She’s upset at Danika for not telling her everything, but Bryce does the same thing to her friends!!
The crossover was actually the only thing that saved me from throwing this book down 😂 I think I just love ACOTAR so much that I was just excited to see them pop up at all regardless of context lol

In the first book I loved the depth, substance, character growth and book 2 was so superficial, anti climactic and lazy. Bryce was my favorite female character ever in book 1 but book 2 I hated her! She steamrolled over everyone and she has zero chemistry with hunt now. I agree with everything! My reading vlog was such a downward spiral…. So disappointed with this book

Honestly I felt like tower of Dawn was gonna give me the feeling that I got from this book, like as if “I’ll get through this cuz they’ll be connections I need to know” literally a bridge book vibe. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked tower of Dawn and I was not expecting to feel less about HOSAB. Although I enjoyed the read still, I basically pushed myself to finish faster because my friends were like “you just need the ending!”. I’ll finish SJM books in a day, this took me like 3 weeks 😂😂.

Oh god that woulda killed me. I ended up skimming it a bit which was the first for me with a SJM book. And I liked tower of dawn more than I expected to also! I don’t read it every time I reread but I still think it was a solid side story to the TOG world

  • @irialeallopez302

really enjoyed this follow up!! I actually can't for the life of me say anything bad about this series because cc1 got me out of a reading slump that had lasted for years and I love these books dearly, but I agree with you on so many things!! The mate conversation really put me off as well, but I want to think that SJM chose to do it that way to give Bryce and Hunt more of a modern-day couple vibe, you know? I can see her doing that to differentiate them from the mates in ACOTAR and TOG, but who knows.
And also related to this, there was a MAJOR "what the hell" moment in this book that really disappointed me, and I haven't seen anyone commenting on it yet!!!! When Bryce says "I love you" to Hunt for the first time, they completely ignore what happened at the end of cc1. We have Bryce's inner monologue telling us that she hadn't even thought those words about Hunt, but she literally told him that she loved him before making the Drop???? And Hunt KNEW that she had told him, and he said so when he was trying to reanimate her????? I swear this angered me so much bc I feel like SJM doesn't usually deliver this kind of mistakes, and Bryce HAD to know that she had said it already.
Anyway, I am so sorry about the long rant, and I really look forward to more of your reviews!!! 🥰💛

I can definitely see where you’re coming from with a lot of your points. I did enjoy it but I agree that my brain didn’t go haywire until the last 100 pages.
I see more parallels between ACOTAR and CC than ToG and CC but I think they are there in both for sure. The two big ones that I was thinking of that you also mentioned were the portals and his similarities to Az vs. Rhys. In Silver Flames, Nes has the Harp that can jump between portals so that’s what I was thinking. And I think Ruhn is like both of them…Az with the shadows for sure and then Rhys because of the telepathy.
I think the Ithan & mystic stuff would tie in more with someone from ToG personally…an ancestor of someone from that world would make sense because of the shifting capabilities…Fenrys maybe? I don’t remember ToG as well as ACOTAR.
I for sure see what you’re saying about the mates thing, too. I wonder if that’s because it was so far removed from Fae from the other series, though, since they didn’t really know where they came from or whatever. I also hope that the mates are not switched up now that the sword and dagger are reunited.
Oh my gosh…SOOOOO mad about how it ended for Hunt. 😤
I feel like I had a few more theories (I know that was already a lot) or what have you but I can’t remember them now! 🤣

  • @lun321

I also thought there would be more of the Autumn King, especially because of the part in book 1 when he had Ruhn emit some of his start power and direct it to that device. He was only able to use some of it, and the ending of HOEAB made me think what kind of information he could get if Bryce powered it. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but it was my understanding that Rhysand is one of the Avallen fae or is related to them in some way. In HOSAB, the Astronomer tells Bryce that the orrery was “made by craftsmen in Avallen long ago.” Rhysand also has one, and it was introduced to us in ACOSF in Chapter 3:
“At the far end of the room, a little dais led into a broad raised alcove flanked by more books-and in its center, a massive, working model of their world, the stars and planets around it, and some other fancy things that had been explained to Cassian once before he deemed them boring and proceeded to ignore them completely. Az, of course, had been fascinated. Rhys had built the model himself centuries ago.”

I totally agree with SO much you said. I also filmed a spoilery chat of me just going off on all the things that were so wrong about this book in order to get it off my chest. This book was a mess and I am not thrilled about the idea of crossover books. The shine on Danika from the first book was totally lost in this one

  • @bridgit2541
    @bridgit2541 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I agree with almost everything you said. This book did not sit well with me at all. The amount of Danika surprises was ridiculous. I honestly don't know how Bryce can even consider her a friend. She clearly barely knew her.
The entire river/ocean plot line seemed either extraneous or completely undeveloped. Also didn't like the Ithan/Bryce story. 100% agree she needs to have male friends.
Overall the book felt to me like Maas was trying to prove she could write adult. This and Silver Flames seem like her just throwing sex on a page and then loosely connecting it with plot. Adult fantasy is not just sex. She took out all of the bonding and small moments with Hunt/Bryce and replaced them with sex. It bored me.
It also seems like so many of the plot points were derivative of her other two series. I get that they are linked, but I kept rolling my eyes and thinking, "oh we are doing a Feysand thing now. "
I also am tired of just hearing how badass Fury is. She has literally done nothing on page. Amren was actually scary. Fury is 2D.
I appreciate the holistic approach Maas took with this book and all the Easter Eggs, but I just did not like the actual plot line. Last 100 pages were good and started tying things together, but it doesn't resolve the rest of the book for me.
I had so many other issues, but I have already written too much.

Its not very often that you come across such an in depth criticism of SJM so this was such an interesting watch!! I agree about the sudden changes in Bryce's character, she felt off throughout this book, and I didn't like the "everyone is in love with her" concept either, felt like it was pushing the importance of her looks over that of her character? Her relationship with Hunt and their chemistry in this book was not nearly as strong as it used to be either, and their scenes together made me cringe at points. I personally really like the ACOTAR x CC crossover, I think it will be really fun to explore character interactions, but Ruhn's implied lineage from Rhys is very confusing, he has both Daemati and shadow singer powers? So like Az and Rhys...? Idk, hurts my brain

i wholeheartedly agree the book should have been cut down. what i liked about acotar was that it was pretty short and the plot was easy to follow and build upon in the following books. cc #1 was a drag in the first 300-400 pages because it was so. much. information. my brain was overloaded. i also agree that this is a bridge book, i hope the next one is better and i actually am super excited for the crossover but i also need to read the tog series to completely understand. i'm still kind of split on this series..its complicated and there are many flaws but it also shows a range that sjm branches out to take on a modern spin (a world where there are phones and clubs and universities that we can relate to)

Rhys has the star powers and stuff tho right? More connected thru their starborn abilities I think? I understand your point of views! I’m in the middle of reading throne of glass for the first time and I just finished queen of shadows and the writing is very similar to CC 2. It does jump from point of view to point of view within the same chapter. The point of views are a little more concise but it does jump around pint of views very similarly. And I think Bryce is going to be the key to getting Amrin to her home world like she’s been trying to do. And they talk about how the Astiri are trying to go back to the original “Fae world” to attack them and I think that’s the ACOTAR world and that’s why she ended up there. Not only for their help but to warn them probably! I totally get your points and some things could have been more concise but I loved it 🤗

ToG is tied to ACOTAR in one instance; when Aelin is falling through worlds, she is helped by what we can assume is Rhysand with a pregnant Feyre. It's a snippet that I read and "clung" to years ago, expecting this to be a multiverse series from that moment. I'd imagine she's tying all three worlds together, and perhaps there could be a tie with Maeve's world too.
While I think some of this is pandering to fans, I genuinely disagree with any suggestions that the "crossover" is only occurring because fans suggested it (not sure if said in video, as I haven't finished it, but I have seen this idea on reddit in a few instances). This has definitely been in the works for a while, though her execution may have been a bit lackluster.
TLDR: I think an open mind is probably best at this point, and making connections with ToG, ACOTAR, and CC will be the goal for readers.

I couldn’t agree more. Thing is… I don’t think there’s any way she can go about it without ruining it for me…. I want them all to stay to themselves and I really really really don’t like the idea of characters from other series meeting… even if it’s just for a quick minute. They should stay in their own world and at most just give readers who really care to deep dive, the idea that they are part of a larger universe and do connect,. Even if we don’t see it on page

@@AvivasLibrary I agree. I really wanted an Elaine/az POV for the next acotar. But now that CC3 is coming out next, I worry that it’s going to be some massive multi-verse war against the asteri. And then what happens to acotar? Where do those characters go from there? That’s my main issue.

@@alexandrakritzman938 i try my best not to think about it because me worrying won’t change wtvr is going to happen… and either way it’s gonna be a long time until the next acotar book considering cc3 isn’t coming out till next January- so I try to forget about and just see what happens… but I’ve been slowly distancing myself mentally from acotar because I just know between the tv show and now the crossover…. It’ll never be the same as it was when I originally read the original trilogy

i looooved book 1. I haven’t finished book 2😫 for some reason it’s been hard and it’s never been hard to read SJM books. Her ACOTAR series actually got me into fantasy books buuuut for some reason this book isn’t catching my attention and for some reason I’m not feeling Bryce’s and hunts relationship. I love Feyra and Rhys, I love Aelin and Rowan, nesta and cassian (basically all the couples she’s put together lol) but I just can’t with Bryce and hunt, I just think they don’t compliment each other. I want to love them but I can’t 😫. And I’m sooooo upset how it seems like Danika kept so much from Bryce like daaamn did Danika ever consider Bryce a best friend 😫😫 but ima finish the book cause I wanna read the crossover part 😂 hopefully at the end I’ll love it 😊😊

One of the flaws of SJM’s books is that at some point, she will ran out of ideas on how to extend the plot, so she will fill the sequels with superfluous padding and only add the final plot points at the last 100 pages.

I hate hate hate the crossover. It's so stupid. I feel like SJM doesn't know where to go with the next acotar book so she made the crossover. Fan service. Wish it would've just stayed in cresent city

I just finished this book and I felt like it was the most boring sjm book .. I spent a 4 days of my time reading about a plotline (Emile) that didn't even matter just so the acotar characters could swoop in at the end of the book and save it. I loved HOEAB ... But this was just so bland and the smut scenes honestly by the end of it there was so many that I skipped the last one coz I was so over hearing about Bryces toes curling in her heels and Hunt growling. Bryce wasn't even Bryce anymore in this book she was just a watered down Aelin with less planning. The whole Asteri plotline crap aswell was just shoehorned in at the end.... Idgaf about Rigelous or whatever his name is because he wasn't present throughout the rest of the book so when the big bad guy shows up it's so anticlimactic. The other characters in this just felt like Sarah was tryna recreate the inner circle but with less interesting and fleshed out characters. This whole book was a bunch of nothingness with a few crumbs of info and character building that I expected would amount to a nice slice of bread at the end and then it just didn't. Don't get me wrong SJM is my favorite author for fantasy but this wasn't her best work. I was expecting to be emotionally damaged and just so in love that by the end of it, it would feel like a break up ... But it never came.

Why do people complain about book length, like, skim a little if you need to but enjoy the journey lol

I am currently in chapter 40,till now it is too slow and dragging with unnecessary chapters...I don't know what is lying ahead..the first book was much better on the whole.
