Rouse: Which note you want me to hit at the top? The C natural or the C Sharp? Monk: Yeah...... The Band: Monk then composes "Ask me now" All in good humor.
I can't believe there is a video. I heard stories about the mind process of Thelonious Monk, those who know or read about him can see what's going on here. Simply amazing.
Thanks for posting this clip. This shows how tough it was for musicians to learn a new Monk composition. Here Monk says "play any note you want to". Elsewhere in the movie he says "you rehearse every time you play your instrument". Sometimes he would write out parts musicians swore were impossible to play. He had to remind John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins how great they were when they first tried to learn a new, counterintuitive Monk tune.
the man is a genius. who gives a damn if his demeanor or his talking voice makes you uncomfortable? get a grip and dig his music if you can. THAT'S his talking voice. he tells Charlie the name of every chord he asks for, and the chart was written by Monk.
#1 monk WAS NOT a schizophrenic. #2 monk's compositions are know for how challenging they are, even to seasoned jazzers. his concept of harmony was all his own.
To those saying "I wish there were more clips like this", as stated in the info above, it's from the movie. Really gives a great insight on Monk. Plenty of other clips on TH-cam if you don't want to watch the entire movie.
What's the argument about? Improvisation is a creative genre that need not be explained. Monk once said playing cords that eventually sound bad is no good; but playing cords ( unusally arranged ) and making them sound good is the key (pardon the pun). Most all musicians agree that Monk was unprecedented and even still remains numero uno as an improv musician.
donaldo gullatt It was easy for Monk but not for any one else. Lol. On another level. I think he would preferred telepathy instead of talking if it was possible. I listen to his music. It's like the sound track that must been in his head. Brilliant corners. Genius.
why are all people assholes regarding a musicians personal life, if he did or did not it does not matter this aint fucking pop gossip culture, and he was not stoned he was mentally ill and had some difficulties to speak clear, lots of people have that without doing drugs.
Mr Austin that's the reality of a professional musician ,recording, traveling, ect and in many cases you don't have time to write the arrangements perfectly, so you have to grab a blank music paper and go, in my case i have to do it a LOT. Blessings !!!
uh mmm uh yeah uhhhh ........ yeah
-Genius
hahaha!
Genius is such an interesting idea
hahahha
To be a genius is to forget how to speak in complete sentences - someone, probably
I can see why Charlie Rouse ended up being the only person who worked with Monk late in his career. Only guy who had the patience.
Monk is such a great character lol, Rouse is very patient with him
monk is very patient with rouse
I love how it seems like Monk is barely capable of communicating with Rouse in words, but it seems like their minds are linked when performing.
Barely capable. Not faffing and being taken in by babble nonsense. Genius silence. :)
Rouse: Which note you want me to hit at the top? The C natural or the C Sharp?
Monk: Yeah......
The Band:

Awesome, pure genius in action, Socrates, Plato, Copernicus, Jefferson, Einstein, Monk!
This is a gem, thank you for uploading. Truly a treasure

He was bipolar though
Having known Charlie Rouse for several years, I can attest to what a beautifully kind soul that he was.

This is gold, watching Monk & Rouse work together!

Monk points to #F or G flat and E which is the root and flat 7 of the Gflat 7 chord

Musical genius! However, he wasn't much of a conversationalist.
That was monks regular personality
Monk is thinking....Negro just play your horn... he's a cold cat..
