  • What Is Full Sun? Part Shade? What's the difference between Part Sun and Part Shade? Burning questions that we gardeners need to know!
    Light levels for plants are a crucial parameter in the success of the crop. Without access to adequate light, plants will suffer and so will your harvests. On the flip side, too much sun or too intense more likely, can be just as bad for other crops. In today's Garden Quickie, we sort all of that out and more!

    I lost so many plants this year because I didn't understand that full dun doesn't always mean full sun. So, many plants developed leathery, weird colored leaves, or they just wilted and fell over. Shade cloth is my new best friend! I wish seed packets were more particular in their instructions! Thanks for the video!

    I have shades under some trees but it’s in front and it will look like a mess if I plant it in pots as someone doesn’t want any different pots in front of the yard, if I place it in the backyard it is expose in full sun cuz I don’t have any place except the cemented yard and it’s hot for any potted plants. I may use the side of the house facing north, but I’m afraid it will attract pests. It’s an excellent video for everyone knowing what the plants needs, this year is too hot, all my veggies not doing well. Thanks for this videos Jeff, keep our minds open to learn more about gardening 👍👍 you are awesome teacher 👍🙏🏻😊👩‍🌾

    Another great helpful garden quickie! My backyard garden gets around 9-10 hours of sunlight in summer, so investing in row covers or shade cloth can help save your plants in the "high noon" blast. Tons of mulch will also help keep the plants from stressing as it helps keep them cooler along with protecting against water loss.

    Well Jeff, I found that out with the Alaska Peas I planted this year. One trellis of peas worked out great. Four feet away the other trellis of peas dried up into seeds for next year. By near the end of June I was collecting pea seeds. Our summers aren't usually hot enough for that. So I didn't think anything of it. We have had a lot of unexpected mid to high 80 degree F weather. Unreal! The Peas were for U.S. Zone 3, we are in 4a. Normally it wouldn't have been an issue. But, I do have seeds for next year lol! Enjoyed, take care!

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

      Its amazing isn't it Michael. Literally just feet away, everything changes. And had you not been growing peas in TWO locations, you might never have known either way. How may near misses have we all had then? Good and bad ones. Its why gardening is a journey... cheers man! :-)

    So much good info in a short amount of time! Love your garden quickies! 😁 Also, I'm really glad you mentioned geography. I live in Mississippi, and the sun down here in the South is special! 😂 I learned that the hard way when I first started gardening.

    Awesome video! I’ve been struggling trying to figure out what plants go best in different areas. In Texas and yep, the sun intensity is insane during mid day, the highest on the UV scale. It goes to 11 😂
    Will you be doing Garden Quickies on the different plants in each sun/shade category?

    Hey Dude! I have something big to tell/ask you! This was my first serious year of gardening and I've noticed a pattern in a bunch of different crops! First, early spring, my radishes were bolting like crazy and producing only leaf growth, now, during the summer, my broccoli is doing the same thing! CRAZY foliage growth, but no head is forming! And another a bit similar thing has happed with my potatoes in the polytunnel - they were nearly 2 METERS! Yes meters tall, but the potatoes I had just dug out today were smaller than a regular potatoes! And I have been feeding them like crazy, with a bit of manure and with nettle concoction/tea to give them nitrogen! I still have potatoes outside that I'm yet to dig out, so I will share those results in the upcoming weeks (i haven't been feeding them on purpose to see if there will be any difference). So my question to you my friend is what the heck induces crops to produce so much leafy growth and not focusing as much on the fruits/veggies?! 🤷 And how do we reverse this process and make them focus on forming a bulb/head. 😃Much love to you and everyone in the channel!

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup...classic case of too much nitrogen. Feed anything but leafy greens too much nitrogen and they will produce leaves and foliage instead of the actual crops you want. 🙂

    • @socloseagain4298
      @socloseagain4298 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms Ok but I have only given nitrogen to the potatoes in the polytunnel 😀The radishes outside have not been fertilized, and the broccoli is on a completely new place in the garden, where we broke down a building that has been down for decades, is it possible the soil is naturally high in nitrogen in our area overall? 🤔

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@socloseagain4298 yes, quite possible. Or at least the RATIO is high.... The ratio of N to P and K could be out of balance, while not necessarily being high in N

    I planted a macadamia out front, then realised the house shades it from 2pm. I'm going to have to move it and put something else there but I'm having a devil of a time trying to find which sun requirements fit my space. Is there a category for no afternoon sun?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately Kerri, not an official category. Mostly plants that just don't like extreme heat/exposure simultaneously. Herbs like cilantro, basil, mint, and then soft leafy greens like spinach and certain lettuces...
