    I chose the sigma 16/1.4 as my one lens and am so happy with it, although it is a bit heavy indeed. I was a bit surprised when you said that at 16mm, F1.4 (on the sigma) was not much different than F2.8 (on the Lumix)?!

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lower-res of video makes the difference less noticeable, but I was surprised, too, and checked the tests: "...and by f/2.8 you get 90.2 lpmm, practically brushing against the official record..." www.lenstip.com/522.4-Lens_review-Sigma_C_16_mm_f_1.4_DC_DN_Image_resolution.html
      I can see why some videographers would prefer the zoom, though, as it's very compact and still very sharp if you don't need wide apertures :)

  • @BlankArea
    @BlankArea 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think you are a bit severe with Voigtlander 25 mm. it's true that it's far too creamy at full aperture, yet from F2 it becomes a very nice lens to use with MFT cameras (GH Lumix and BMC Pocket 4K) as it is not as oversharpened or videoish like some Lumix lens are.

  • @RavikantRai21490
    @RavikantRai21490 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The Lumix 12-35 is focus by wire and it is almost impossible to get consistent focus throw on it. Why then do you recommend that lens for a full manual camera like the BMPCC 4k? Would love to know how you are using the Lumix G 12-35 with BMPCC 4k and pulling focus on it.

  • @EdStarkey
    @EdStarkey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tom, I usually agree with you. But the Sigma 16mm f1.4 is over two stops faster than the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8! That's ISO-800 instead of ISO-3200. Even with the BMPCC4K better high ISO performance, the use case can't be denied. I'm strongly considering getting one for my GH5S.

      It is a great lens I own it in Sony E mount for my a6500 but I personally couldn't justify it for the bmpcc4k since I already own all these other lenses and I also use speedbooster and other fast wide angle cinema glass. But if you feel like you're going to use it a lot then yes it's a great quality lens. Me, I barely ever took it out.

    Tom is it me or is EVERYONE grading the BMPCC4K very warmly and underexposing? There’s always lack of contrast and it seems most of the data is between 0-500 on the IRE. Are filmmakers trying to go for this look to be cool because it just looks muddy. It seems everyone’s afraid to blow out the highlights (as if they’re told they’ll lose dynamic range). Hence, muddy shots with no punch.

  • @aybee5908

    Though the Pana G-Lenses are good workhorses, there`s a point, I`m looking for lenses with "character". Thanks to mft mount, you can adapt all vintage lenses in the world and most of them are easy to get (and cheap). There are tons of Canon FD lenses. A Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 has got very fascinating flares, which look very cinematic. Also SLR Magic got some intersting lenses like the 8mm. Of course they are all manual lenses. But do we need auto- and stabilized lenses on the BMPCC 4k? Just if you wanna shoot handheld most of the time. But I highly recommend a tripod and a gimbal with follow focus (as Moza Air), like Tom showed in other reviews.

  • @AGS-8785-D1R
    @AGS-8785-D1R 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Whoa, what is happening @1:25?? Software stabilization glitch? It's like double vision bokeh.
    I've loved the 35-100 since I bought it brand new in 2012 and just recently sold it but I think many of the Panasonic/Olympus m43 lenses just really don't fit in well with, what I think most people want to use the Pocket 4K for. I'd hate it for weddings/events/small projects because of the power issues, lacking IBIS, no EVF, and locked-in screen. To work around all of these things innately slows me down and aren't worth the trade-off for shooting raw. The IS lenses really offer very little help compared to a GX85, G85, GH5, etc. to the point where you really just want this camera on sticks or a gimbal with a motorized follow focus. This camera really is a cinema camera; meaning it needs more attention and setup time than any Panasonic m43 body.
    So with that said, I think the way to go with this camera is basically getting all the Voigtlander lenses, a gimbal w/follow focus, and a good tripod. The Voigtlanders are the fastest, smallest lenses you can get with repeatable focus pulls. If you really need the lens stabilization, then beef it up with the Tamron 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 G2's w/ 0.64x SB. But I think getting those two are quite a bit extra. I just don't know what small budgeted-clients (if they're hiring you + Pocket 4K) are going to need 100-300mm focal lengths + raw footage.
    FYI, I've been a diehard Panasonic fan since the GH1 (GH2, GH3, G7, GX85 + G85). Just recently sold all my m43 bodies in the past couple months (begrudgingly) and most lenses as I've switched to Sony and BM. Kept some m43 glass for the Pocket 4K (voigt 25, Oly 17/1.8). With Sony's incredible autofocus and EF mount lenses offering repeatable focus pulls, the focus-by-wire lenses from Panasonic don't seem like a great investment for a cinema camera, even one as cheap as the Pocket 4K.

    • @nordfresse
      @nordfresse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair points. I also believe that the most effective IS lenses are not mft (since they only kiinda do half the job along with ibis) but in fact ef lenses. Canon has always made them to work as best they can on their own, since they dont have ibis in their Cameras. So the Canon or Tamron 24-70mm are the best stabilized lenses out their I think. Focus by wire on mft lenses could actually be a useable in the future because BMD just announced today an upcoming fw-update for the P4k that will enable focus controll with the focus wheel of a gimbal. That could make mft lenses good for gimbal use. Another point is that a lot of mft lenses rely on in camera corrections for optical issues like distortion or ca. I think that the P4k cant do that ether.

    I must admit, I love the Voigtlander primes myself. Nothing touches them for build quality and the smooth focus ring, plus the aperture that can be de-clicked with a button, are tailor made for video work. I think he forgot the Olympus 12-40! Probably the best lens for the pocket 4K! Yes i did use the panasonic 12-35. If u think of using a Wireless FF u will not be able to use it on the panasonic 12-35 cause its focus by wire.

      I'd say better than 12-35 mainly for NOT being focus by wire. So yeah, Oly 12-40 is a better choice.

  • @ModelsandMovies
    @ModelsandMovies 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Generally, I enjoy and agree with your videos and they often help me decide which pieces to buy to kit out my PCC4K. But this video, I have some argument with. For m43 systems, yes, I'd say that this lens lineup is pretty great and covers anything you'd need, but for the PCC4K, not so much. The Olympus 75-300 is largely unusable for this camera and any film making you'd want it for. For wildlife photography, sure. But the lack of I.S. requires a beefy tripod and mount to get anything remotely usable with it.
    And then you talk a lot about how the Lumix lenses have autofocus so that's better than the others. But the PCC4K doesn't have continuous auto focus, so for me, a REAL focus ring over that dumb focus-by-wire junk seems to be more usable for this particular camera. And that's why I was surprised that the Olympus 12-40 didn't make your top 5. That lens is extremely sharp and has an option to use a mechanical focus ring, or snap to focus by wire if you wanted that. The only thing it lacks is I.S., but at $650 new (*when I bought it), it was a steal compared to the Lumix.
    The Laowa is a lens that almost defies physics, and I find myself using it often on a gimbal. One good thing to come from this video is that I'll steer clear of that Voigtlander. What's the point of f/0.95 if you really won't ever use it since it's so soft.
    One last thing. Your battery door. Do you have issues with it staying closed?? I did too. Any time I squeezed the grip, like... picking it up, the door would pop open. But I contacted BlackMagic and they sent me a replacement door and now it stays firmly closed all the time.

      Hi Eric Zhao, The oly 12-100 f4.0 is the slowest lens I have ever owned. It has been great during the day on the pocket 4k (use a tiffen vari ND) and for the sort of work I do i would need some lighting at night anyway, it is the only lens i have with IS that I would very occasionally think to use, in a quick grab for the camera, usually I just use a tripod and am happy to do so. As for the bokeh, if you go onto my channel and look at the "frogmouths" video it was shot entirely on bmpcc 4k and the oly 12-100 f4.0 and I was very pleased with the outcome. But completely understand if this lens would not or may not suit your filming purposes. All the best. @@ericcoen8894

Only issue is the manual focus, but I can’t justify spending more on Cine lenses. Sigma 18-35 would be an option, but is just not that logistical for any non narrative projects I do.
