11:32 The HDMI died because it's dangerous to power the cam and the monitor from the same power source. I was wandering if this would be an issue while watching the video. Other people seemed to have that same problem. You can contain this problem by turning on the camera, and then connecting HDMI. And after you're done: disconnecting the HDMI and then turning off Power. At least that's what I heard. Even better would be a two battery solution.
Damn - I didn't know the camera could be controlled with monitor/bluetooth. Kind wish you could grab just a module for existing touch screen monitors (like a Ninja V). Slick rig!
I noticed you said you fry your HDMI port toward the end of the video. Did this happen because of the grounding problem that occurs from attaching your camera and monitor to the same powering plate?
Personally, I found that using D-Tap connectors for both the monitor and camera power is is the problem. I don't know how exactly, but I have switched to barrel connectors. I haven't had a problem since I initially fried my hdmi port. Also, I use the 12v port on my battery plate for the camera, and the 8.4v port for my monitor. I haven't had any problems since using this setup.
I'm excited to check out the updated guide! The original was really helpful before I got my Pocket 6k. Now that I've been making videos for a while, I'm sure the updated info will be even more beneficial. Thanks for continuing to make great content.
have you ever experienced Ground loop issues with the monitor and camera being connected to the same battery? I've had this happen to me twice where the hdmi port gets fried from an unregulated surge in voltage. A quick look in the blackmagic forums shows a hell of a lot of people are suffering from this. What cables are you using to prevent this etc?
Mike Jimenez I’ve since ditched the Vmount plate for a dumb mounted one and plug directly into the battery using a multitap (Dtap board). This seems to be the proper way to do it. It has something to do with the smart V mount power supplies not doing their job correctly.
This is a pretty common issue among pro cameras. The only real way to avoid it is to make sure all video cables are disconnected before attaching or detaching power sources to the camera or monitor. There's a really informative post explaining it on the bmpcc subreddit, and there's a paper from arri explaining the issue in their cameras as well. I'd post links, but youtube just spam filtered it out last time.

That tilta cage has an option for the top section to mount the T5 Samsung SSD and keep the handle. I was thinking the same thing, C-Fast is way too expensive, and SD is too slow.
Tilta has a gold mount battery base plate specifically designed for that cage where the battery plate is situated at the bottom of the camera, They made it so that the camera monitor is not blocked and have external monitor be used by the AC on side. I wonder what happens if you connect the v mount to the monitor and supply power to the camera from the monitor instead of the battery. I’m actually afraid to try it out myself! So far have been powering camera and monitor separately.

Im gonna try the setup of v mount to feelworld monitor and powering my gh5 with this monitor just to see if my v mount lasts longer then. First im gonna check power output of the dummy battery which is needed for my gh5 before popping it in ofc.
It works. But Ive managed to fry my hdmi the same way. Its a known fault when powering from v lock. For me it seemed to happen when I swapped in a fresh v lock battery. Probably created a surge and fried the hdmi.
No it's not. I've had a BMPCC4K since 2018 and power it and the monitor (as well as everything else) via a V-lock and haven't had any issues. I've power my second BMPCC4K via an NP-F adapter mounted on the cage and also had no issues powering the monitor at the same time. I think the major issue is to do with poor quality cables.
I could be wrong but, going d tap straight to the 12v input on the camera is what caused my pocket to become faulty for some reason. Came back for the tilting v-lock, have played with mounting the vlock on the bottom for when you're shooting 90% of the time easyrig. Whats cool about this tilting mount, you could also use the wooden camera teradek mounting bracket on the back of the vlock plate and then for ease of use I use a Hawkwoods D-tap splitter that goes straight into the camera, so no need to mount separately
I got the camera on a manfrotto plate - that manfrotto plate then slides into a shoulderrig (the one from smallrig) - and the shoulderig when not used is siting on a sony vct plate on my manfrotto tripod. - I am still looking for some kind og of baseplate that has 15 mm rods so i dont have to change modules betwin shoulder/tripod and handheld.
Great video as always Caleb. I like the Portkeys monitor BUT running a wireless follow focus on a hand held rig is overkill and just adds additional cables. A good old fashioned mechanical follow focus is my preferred method.

I've had the SmallRig cage & now have the Tilta one, I'm wrestling with is the price of the baseplate, but haven't found a good alternative from other parts yet.
Doesn't this rig feel really to-heavy when you use it? With the monitor on top of the huge top handle, it seems like it'd be a nightmare to keep that thing stable. Also, how do you shoot handheld if you aren't able to press the camera up against your body? I mean I guess you could do that, but then you risk putting tons of pressure on the screen via the V-mount battery and the cables on the back are going to constantly get crushed. I hate to be "that guy," I just don't see how this rig is usable unless you're only shooting on a tripod.
Hey i think you can make it even better, if you switch your battery for a NANO TWO from FX-Lion you can power your monitor with a 90° adapter and the usb-C port of the battery, that way no need for the extra multi DTAP cable/plate/plug :) ! i power my monitor like that and it work perfectly
According to blackmagic forum, its a common issue that hdmi will fry itself when you use same external power for both monitor and camera. Its a design flaw and blackmagic does not know why it keeps happening to people. You should edit your video about that part and warn people not to use vmount power on monitor, because a lot of people are gonna fry their ports now.

I would put something mounted maybe in the upper part of the cage to protect the screen from the battery which when closed could slam and damage the monitor
Hi, this is a very nice video. I always wonder if a motor to control the iris in a cinema lens is not necessary? I have seen this on bigger cinema cameras. (two motors- focus and aperture). Would that make this setup too complicated? How do you change the iris while filming then? I am about to buy a BMPCC 4k. I want to get a Meike cinema lens. My question is, what is the point of having a lens with a continuous - de-clicked - trow if you can't operate it quickly or you have to put your hand over your lens ruining your shoot? @@petrub27 Ok here me out. Maybe....just maybe..... the HDMI out dying had nothing to do with the way the power was being supplied. It almost as if there are occasional defects / bad components in any manufactured product. 🤔
So many great ideas here. Thanks for this, it's excellent.
Nice setup. Love the follow focus setup.
How would I attach a mic to this setup?
Thanks
Best engaging voice and explanations on camera gear I have come across. 🙏 I want it all
The TILTAING flip screen mod for both the 4K and 6K cuts down the need for excessive amounts of accessories/paraphernalia. Regards
Paul J. Burns did they magically make the screen brighter too?
you are de 2nd youtuber I watch today telling the HDMI died on them, he said it was due to poor D-tap cable quality, but most people in the comments felt it was not, but most likely the v-mount battery was somehow sending some extra power thru the monitor and frying the HDMI output of the camera. Dis you find out what happened to yours?
I was wondering the same.
This thread on Reddit might help shed some light. Personally, I'm just going to power the monitor and camera separately and avoid having to think about it. www.reddit.com/r/bmpcc/comments/lwyevp/powering_bmpcc_and_monitor_off_same_battery/
For the item links in the description:
The newer PortKeys BM5 and LH5P appear to now support Bluetooth control without an adapter. The links to the BM5 product pages link to the prior, out-of-stock, version. LH5P would certainly be a great thing to investigate. Dimmer and no SDI, but $350 cheaper at time of writing.
The Amazon link for the Intellytech battery isn't sold directly through them at this time. You see "recommended instead" stuff.
Screen protectors for the camera and monitor might do well on the list.
Thanks for this!
is that a seperate rail rod support kit? I didn't see a mention of the rail rods. What make and model is the tripod? It's so cute and techy
That rig looks functional and much needed 🤝🏾🤝🏾🤝🏾🤝🏾 Thank you for the walk through and the detailed list 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Beautiful rig. Keeping it simple.
Pretty neat toy cinema camera lol. 🎥🤔
THX for review!
What do you think about these Gimbals:
- Gudson Moza Air 2S
- ZHIYUN WEEBILL 3
- DJI RS3 (Pro)
What would be currently the best option to about 700-800 € for filming indoor and outdoor dance events, dance couples in daylight ?
Camera and lens can be purchased flexibly - possibly Blackmagic Pocket 4k ?
Came back for the tilting v-lock, have played with mounting the vlock on the bottom for when you're shooting 90% of the time easyrig. Whats cool about this tilting mount, you could also use the wooden camera teradek mounting bracket on the back of the vlock plate and then for ease of use I use a Hawkwoods D-tap splitter that goes straight into the camera, so no need to mount separately
Great instruction, what I missed is how to shoulder this setup. Probably need a different configuration.
Thank you so much for the Ultimate (BMPCC4K) Rig breakdown. I appreciate it!
This video is exactly what I wanted to see after the release of the BMPCC 4K. Thanks for finally making it 👍 Also, curious to know how this rig setup would change with Tilta's new BMPCC display modification....
Informative, useful, openly honest, wonderful video! Liked and subscribed to your channel from this! THANK YOU!!!
Anyone know the make/model of the table top tripod and swivel head? It is not shown on his list that I could see.
12:28 can someone put a beat under that? "Do what you gotta do, push it back up."
For the more constructive part of my comment: This video made me to buy finally a proper battery solution for my bmpcc 4k. Having something in front of the screen always hindered me to buy a v-mount. I actually bought the stuff that were featured in this video regarding the folding v-mount. Thank you so much :)
I've had the SmallRig cage & now have the Tilta one, I'm wrestling with is the price of the baseplate, but haven't found a good alternative from other parts yet.
There are screw holes in bottom. The cheapest you can go is attatch a plate of your preference there
Can you link the table top tripod you used?
What quick release would u recommend putting under the cage? So u can easily take the rails off without having to unscrew anything
What cute little Tripod you using there ?
Hey man i love the video and the rig! Just wondering, What lense do you use?
Your videos are complete quality.
I heard that powering both your monitor and camera from the same power source can burn out your hdmi. Looks like that's exactly what happened
Well it might be because the Pocket Blackmagic's are budget cinema cameras so they have to sacrifice build quality to give you that price.
Rubbish BM build quality.
kushagra K Can you please explain ?
Nice rig bro! The portkeys module makes this thing into a monster 💪🏽 love mine!!
Can you directly use a gimbal wit this rig? or do you need to remove some stuff?
Is there any updates on what monitor to use and other items ?
What is the small table tripod?
Wow!! Definitely building this rig asap!
This is great I know I am late to this. Question what fluid head/tripod combo is this?
Hey, can I use the Portkeys Bluetooth Module on another monitor, like the Shinobi?
Hi Caleb ! Excelent rig. What would you advise to protect the screen ? Thanks
As I noted above, that's not true.
What lens is that?
what is the low tripod /fluid head setup?
Ifootage
Would love to see some audio receiver mounting options. Possibly mounted to backside of the battery plate?
the HDMI jack died??? been doing tons of research and this was gonna be my first real rig, and it makes me real hesitant when things like that happen. what's your experience with other problems??
Really enjoyed this video ! Loved the setup and walk through. What’s a similar setup for a beginner with something like the Canon EOS M5 or comparable?
Love this video, bro! Would it work to attach the rail block upside down so that the battery folds under the camera and keeps the screen free?
Is this a budget choice? Thanks again for this video.
i just gotta ask, do you shave the top of your hands?
What is the lens you are using? Would really like to know 😊
Any advice for fitting a shotgun mic with this set up? Thanks.
What is that beautiful lens on the front of that beastly beautiful rig?!
This is the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm T1.5!
How did you apply the power splitter to the mount? Tape or glue or how ?
Great setup Caleb. Pity those long cables make it look untidy. There should be more short cables on the market. We all seem to have that long cable problem. As always you are an inspiration to me with you high quality videos.
That is awesome!!!🤩
