On May 5th, 1945 U-534 was underway in the Kattegat, north west of Helsingor, Denmark, and although Admiral Dönitz had ordered all his U-boats to surrender as from 08:00 May 5th, for some unknown reason U-534 refused to do so.

Visited U-995 last week in Laboe near Kiel in Germany. Now that is a fine example of a museumboat. This U-534 chop-up is really a disgrace. A spit in the face to the 30,000 boys and men who died in those things.

I still think they were assholes by cutting her up. The only other type IX is the U505 now and its in an inside bunker which will keep it preserved forever.

They had to cut it up to transport it as moving it in one wouldve done a lot of damage, also it is cheaper to cut it up and also britain is still pretty broke this is the best way of preserving it...

@weißer Ritter no I'm not defending it, it just is what it is, just get over that it was cut up and stop complaining about it coz it's not going to magically put itself back together again, yes it's a shame that they had to do it but at least they didnt fucking scrap it

Every single video of U534 you scroll to the comments and it's just about cutting her up. Worth noting that if Merseytravel had not stepped in she was well on her way to being scrapped. Anyone thinking that is better is a fool.
Yes, its a "shame" but in todays health and safety crazy compensation claim driven culture do you honestly think it would be deemed viable to wander through a rusted hulk? No. My only criticism of Merseytravel today is they seem quite unwilling to be doing any maintenance on her aside from a lick of paint. Almost everything interactive at the exhibit is broken and has been for years. The cameras, flickering lights etc ten years ago were really good. Now its just dead pixels and pigeon muck.
I prefer this though to the fate of other exhibits that were with U534 at its former site. HMS Plymouth, Onyx, Bronington - all gone forever. The only baffling thing is that whilst there is "no money" we found something like 75 million to raise the LCT7074 (a decaying shell) and refurbish that to as it was for display but intact ships are not viable projects.
Obviously nothing to do with scrap metal value, corrupt organisations sorting contracts out with their mates worth millions or corporate greed wanting to fill in every drop of water for apartments.

@@Chris-m-m02 I mean....its only metal, it's not like it would be impossible for it to be reassembled and put back into 1 piece. It's all a matter of money and motivation.

They will have cut it up so that parties of irritating and bad-mannered school kids can whiz round it in a couple of minutes whilst still gazing at the latest social media gossip on their mobile phones. God forbid that the little darlings would actually be expected to put themselves out by having to clamber down steps and railings into a cramped and claustrophobic piece of machinery.

At least she was cut up with the foresight of being able to put her back together again. It is a tragedy she was cut into sections. The Germans may have been the enemy, at the time, but they were serving their nation as well. A bit more respect would have been much appreciated. It could have been worse. She could have been turned into scrap metal. Hopefully she will be whole once again sometime.

Congrats to the people who run this museum, so well presented, with the display of contents found aboard the sub...It surely must be a most interesting visit for those who have studied in depth the war at sea during WW2. This museum is one of only three in the world (the other two are in Germany and the USA) to show actual U-Boote that took part in WW2.

I wonder what the hell these museum people were thinking.
Boss: "We just had a historical WW2 U boat come into our possession, it was taken from the bottom of the sea and we have to think of a way to make this boat an attraction, any ideas men?"
Guy 1: "We could have the U-boat fully restored to it's former glory and have the artifacts and signs placed along the restored interior so people get a feeling of what it was like to walk arround these WW2 submarines while learning about the history."
Boss: "That sounds stupid Jerry! go to your office and pack your things, you're fired!"
    Guy 1: "...Okay...Screw you too..."
Boss: "Come on, do any of you have a good idea we can do for an attraction?"
Guy 2: "We could put it on display, no interiors, just signs and the submarine to look at, that's sure to bring attention."
Boss: "No, that won't work... We need a little bit of interiors... That's what people want with these old rust buckets, right?"
Guy 1: "Then why don't you go with my idea..."
Boss: "I TOLD YOU TO PACK JERRY, YOU'RE FIRED, AND NOW DOUBLE SO!.
    Guy 1: "That's not possible."
Guy 2: "Aren't you being alittle harsh about this boss? I mean we're just talking about making an attraction of a U-boat."
    Boss: "..."
    Guy 2: "...Boss I don-"
Boss: "YOU'RE FIRED TOO, GET OUT OF MY MEETING ROOM! NOW"
Guy 2: "Too bad you can't fire me, I quit." (walks out the room)
Boss: "Alright, anyone else that wants SH*T TODAY? IDEAS PLEASE!"
Guy 3: "Ok, so you actually are going to hopefully like this idea, we'll cut the wreck into separate sections not even lined up with eachother, and then the customers would be able to see inside the U-boat, but we'll case it in so they can't go in."
    Boss: "..."
Guy 3: "And... uhh... We'll make lot's of cash from it, and we won't have to sink any money in to restore the interiors to make them safe because no one will be in there."
Boss: "YOU'RE A GENIUS CARTER! YOU GET A RAISE!"
Guy 1: "You cannot be serious, YOU CAN'T DO THAT TO A HISTORICAL VESSEL!"
Boss: "Screw you Jerry, I can do whatever the hell I please."
Guy 3: "I'm fine with it."
Guy 1: "Won't doing this start public outcry?"
    Boss: "SECURITY!"
Guy 1: "You'll pay for this someday."
Guy 4: "Boss, I hear they're making arrangements to give the historical ocean liner "Titanic" to you by the end of the year 2023."
Boss: "2023! THAT'S 30 YEARS AWAY!" (1993 is the year the U-boat was raised)
Guy 4: "Gives you plenty of time to think."
Boss: "Alright, you have any ideas?"
    Guy 4: "Diving tours?"
Boss: "That's why you are never at this table."
Guy 3: "We'll raise the ship, cut the ship in sections, and keep people out of the interiors like we are going to do with the sub."
Boss: "You have been PROMOTED TO ASSISTANT BOSS!"
    Guy 3: "YAAAAY!"
This entire story I made up was stupid and a waste of my time, and a waste of time for all who read it, I apologize.

The Kevin Wheatcroft Collection or Paul Allen should have bought this then it would have been restored properly. Or if Merseyside didn't have the money to restore it, Portsmouth would have been a more suitable place for it with the Imperial War Museum. The last British D-Day Landing craft was salvaged from Merseyside and is now fully restored
