Thanks for the video, it’s asked all the question I needed answering. A great vehicle, but as you infer, it’s a shame about the price! Congratulations by the way on your daughters sense of fun and adventure with her dad, high praise indeed !
We have fitted the back of our Buzz with 6 SmartStore Pro boxes (ca. 35 litre size), three wide x two deep. These black with orange fittings are sturdier than the transparent non-pro boxes. One box is fitted with charging cables, etc., while the other five are used to store such things as food, after a trip to the grocery store. The height of these boxes is gudenuf at being the same height as the folded rear seats. We have used similar plastic boxes in our MPVs, for over 20 years. The width of the car (1210 mm) is perfect for a 1200 x 2000 x 100 mm mattress. What hasn't been done yet, is to chop the mattress into three (1200 x 666 x 100 mm) and fitting them into a purpose built mattress cover., that will fold appropriately, and allow it to be stowed away without issues.
Nice test there. I've got a transporter converted to a campervan, I bought it to get away into the wilderness over winter and lots of others do too! I've got a diesel heater in mine, warm but can be noisy getting up to temperature. My local VW dealer don't seem to want to offer me a test drive, crazy. I'd want the LWB 4motion if I were to switch. Shame the Buzz doesn't have a camp mode like Tesla do. No heatpump either I believe. It would have been good to cover range lost overnight through heating on your video.
Thanks for the review of the WV Buzz and let EVK know she is a natural. Watch yourself EVM shes coming for you:) Interesting concept that someone would spend 75k on a Buzz and use it for camping, scary price but a great vehicle. Looking to get my first and probably last EV when my pension lump sum comes through. Your Channel has lots of very helpful and down to earth info. Particularly liked your Vlog on solar and battery storage, which I’m assured is available here in Ireland. I’ve used an ‘Amdro Boot Jump in my Berlingo for nearly a decade to go long holidays with my Amdro which turns a lot of van derived vehicle, including the VW Transporter into a camper and would work an absolute treat in this vehicle and keep your Buzz a regular MPV when the Boot Jump is lifted out the rest of the year and given the initial cost of. Give the Buzz’s high price the outlay on a Amdro would seem affordable. (I’m not part of the Amdro but rather a very satisfied customer, and fan of wild camping) Keep up with the vids EVM as always they are very enjoyable and informative.
I just got an ex Demo Life (black interior) registered end Jan 2023 with 4,500 miles for £40K for some general car duties and weekend camper use. Traded in my 23 plate Polo so costing me £23.5K, which is not "end-of world" affordability for an MPV. Even a new Transporter 6.1 panel van is over £40K typically still on diesel. Power duties will be served off a Jackery Explorer 1000 Plus which can constantly power 2kW max load so work with my portable induction hob and small AirFryer. The Jackery also heavy enough to fool the Buzz if put on Drivers seat for night heating/cooling etc. 12V already used for the Alpicool P18L small portable fridge. Got a folding double mattress that can also double-up as a sofa in back. Thermal blinds arder and due next week.
Cool video, thanks for spending the time doing it, some quality father and daughter time. Kind of perplexed they haven't stolen the 'camp mode' idea from Tesla for such a vehicle. Seems like some lazy oversight on VW part.
This is great. I already use my ENV200 van as a camper in the summer. This would be a great future replacement if it wasn't over twice the price. 🥴 We use an awning behind the van to do our cooking and hanging out.
Nice father, daughter camping. It is too bad the heat will not stay on all night. Here in Nova Scotia, Canada the nights would be much colder this time of year and being old now, heat is required all of the time. You could bring a camp stove and cooler and stay the weekend. You could do some hiking and have the perfect way to spend the weekend.
I have a Honda Stepwagon - japanese domestic vehicle - which is similar size to the VW ID Buzz and I have used it for an overnight sleep ... it also has blacked out rear windows and turnaround front seats and a built in table so perfect. Why it was never officially imported to the UK I do not know. It is also a lot cheaper than the VW!!
Dacia jogger has a bed kit. It's not an ev (there is a very mild hybrid version) but it's about £40k cheaper. I imagine Dacia will going electric at some point.
Got to say done car camping in my model 3 is capable of being a reasonable sleep even powering my cpap overnight. Getting a Y in September so I can easily sleep in the rear with my tesmat camping mattress
Used to sleep in the back of an old Volvo 240 estate at race circuits...that looks like luxury by comparison! Won't be ditching my Fiat Ducato just yet though.
Or an MG for £35k, and a lot of hotel rooms. People tell me camper vans are like a holiday every weekend. I disagree. When I'm on holiday, I don't deficate in a cupboard...
The price point is ridiculous but I think what is a bigger issue is those details that could have made this more viable, like the ability to heat/charge phone overnight, window blinds and all those other little clever thoughts. Instead you have something that for £70k has a lot of compromises. These oversights seem to be occurring with VW more often these days.
Silly price but then again similar to a VW california. Why didn’t they make it the same dimensions as a T6 California, even with the LWB it’ll be too narrow. Not sure how Tesla can have camp mode but VW did not even think to add it too the buzz. Oh and InstaVolt in Windermere is 100KW. Basically the best chargers are all at Booths supermarkets in Keswick, Windermere, Ulverston and Kendal
Shame about the auto shut-off on the heating, even my Soul has Aux mode, somewhat disappointing VW haven't got something similar. That said I wouldn't fancy trying to sleep in the back of the Soul!
If an ev like this suffers a thermal runaway event while you're sleeping in it and assuming the electrics are damaged, will the boot still open manually from the inside so you can escape?
Oh come on. Thermal runaway! An EV is far less likely to have a fire than ICE. All cars have manual releases, especially as all the side doors were manual anyway. Unless an axe murder happened to be passing as well and kept you in.
Sorry but I am struggling with £70k for something that can take two sleeping bags. I'm a massive fan of the styling but 12mths plus for delivery & it's nothing more than an electric box.... No! I would buy a motorhome privately plus a brand new BEV... Or an Aptera for £25k with the tent kit. Especially as the Aptera might arrive before the VW...!!
I don't want to alert you or anything... But I think I've heard some suspiciously Southern notes in your daughter's accent. And not like Kent south, :)) :))
If you’re buying a new car, an EV is no more expensive than an ICE car once you factor in running costs, maintenance, etc. Used is a different story as the second hand EV market hasn’t had enough time to mature, but in another 5 years or so it will be a similar story. So, no, EVs aren’t way too expensive for working folk: if they can’t afford a new car, they can’t afford a new car 🤷♂️
There's no doubt an internal conversion will be done at some point. Maybe with a van rather than a 5/7 seater. Imagine paying 50K plus and then taking a saw to it to fit windows and shore power ports etc.... let alone the roof for a pop top or hard top roof!
For me that is a totally overpaid piece for people who just ride the retro hype. Even my Model 3 like all Teslas has Camping mode and you have energy all the time and easily over night even with -20 degrees. So the Buzz is not even a usable camper van? Nah thanks...
I mean come on - you gotta be off your rocket to pay £70-80k for this - it's simply a vehicle designed my VW to take advantage of the many thousands of completely bonkers people that were a) riding the EV buzzword and b) already were happy to pay £50k+ for VW's version of a transit van. I don't understand the obsession - I'd rather spend £20k on a Hymer and be genuinely happy for the rest of my life.
@@benholroyd5221 True of course, but then buying new is a mugs game right? For people who are happy to throw £500 a month down the toilet on a PCP deal and then moan that they gotta keep working another 5 years and cant retire as early as they'd hoped? 😕
Bonkers? I think many Buzz owners have children who influence vehicle choices, and children today don't want to be seen by their peers being driven around in an ICE vehicle. These same children will be even more vocal as they age, and ask precisely what their parents did to prevent/ mitigate climate change? Buying a Hymer, will not be seen as a particularly good answer. For my wife and I there was absolutely no way that we were going to buy an ICE vehicle in 2023. The choice was between Renault, Peugeot/ Citroën and Volkswagen. Buzz offered the best of these three.
The carbon foot print is astounding on the making of this totally overpriced gimmick ! my deisel has caused less pollution in its life time so far and the tyres last too !!!
71 thousand pounds, it's not even blacked out windows. No way the normal person is going to buy this rip off. Go and buy a proper 2nd hand camper for lot less and so much better.
Perfect eye-roll 🙄@ 10:25 😄
Your daughter is a star. I’ve got 3 daughters and 2 two granddaughters so I know those wee looks well. Loved the video, thanks 😊

Definitely should have a camper mode.

Going for £40k now on AutoTrader, less than 1000 miles. Lol

... It's really a question of the size of the cupboard.. Isn't it...!
... Somewhat 'first world', I should say....
The main hotel room difference is that a camper van is still worth a lot after the same amount of holidays. Hotel money is like renting, its gone!

The Austin Maxi's seats would do the same to create a makeshift double bed. But how desperate would you have to be really...
Still want one. Wish they had copied the Tesla camp mode and pet mode.
Now you’ve established yourself as a camping expert 😂 we need a similar Model Y video (which has camp mode!)
