  • Lol Tolhurst, a founding member of The Cure, is coming to discuss his new memoir out in stores October 11. “Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys” details Tolhurst’s time with the band which spanned thirteen years. Tolhurst also reveals details of his relationship with the band’s frontman, Robert Smith, who he has known since the age of five. Tolhurst hopes that this memoir “illuminates events for you as much as it has for him.” Interview at AOL HQ in NYC for BUILD Series.

I met Lol at a bar in LA a few years back . He seemed bowled over I recognized him and was incredibly kind . I was like man… your music found its way all over the planet without a ton of radio play and obviously no internet and I just needed to express the importance of that band to so so many . He was polite while I gushed 😂.

Cure fans have a lot of appreciation and fondness for Lol. He is a founding band member and is on all of the classic Cure songs in my opinion. That fact is not forgotten by the majority of fans. Nice guy that sadly has had to face some demons. Would love to see him back in the band full time again however unlikely that may seem. Looking forward to reading this book.

Since no Cure album has moved me much since the late 80’s, I’ve kind of come to the conclusion that in some way or another L. Tolhurst - and/or the relationship between he and R. Smith - had a crucial influence on the quality of the music of The Cure.
So I’d love to see him back in the Cure for the making of a new album - to see if my theory proves right.

For me - being British and of "a certain age" (ahem), - The Cure were a key band of UK Post Punk. As such, I love them 1978 to 1982. Early to mid 1983 was "ok" and, after that, I'm not really interested. The Cure to me was always primarily Smith, Tolhurst, Gallup and Dempsey (Mathieu Hartley shouldn't be forgotten either). I don't recognise the band from late 1983 onwards as being the same group in all honesty.

. Prog bands get unfairly bashed by these old punksters in some respects because when I was 13 in 1977 , coming from an uneducated & more agricultural background and not having older syblings that bought albums , I and many more like me had never even heard of Pink Floyd or Genesis or Led Zeppelin or King Crimson or Yes but were constantly over fed by radio the likes of over 30 year old POP icons like Elton , Rod the knob , Leo Sayer , the Cheesey Bee Gees , Racey , retro Showaddywaddy , ABBA and of course Disco & more whom needed kicking off their Pedastol to give youngsters something reflecting their daily reality . 🏴❤️

That's not true. Plenty examples of shit music while the Cure were around. You had to get a record deal, but that didn't necessarily mean you were the best. It's good that anyone can publish now. You're just too lazy to swim in the sea and find the best. We all are lazy like that. That's what the internet did. It made it too hard for us to find the good stuff. That doesn't mean it's not there.

Lol talking about the cure's music like he ever had much an input in it. He was just a lucky tag along. I find it ridiculous that fans would go up to him for questions about the band. Musically he was mostly a non-entity. A bad drummer and, at the time anyway, a keyboardist who could barely play the one hand lines and that didn't care to try to improve. Robert kept him in the band at least 6 years too long just because he was a buddy. Like i'm glad they reconciled and i have no ill will towards Lol but his contribution to the cure is minuscule. He was there to be a friend of Robert and when he got into heavy alcohol he was then just useless and actually dragging them down.

And, as Ben pointed out, their musical output was better just because of him being around. There was only one truly great album after his departure.
