A slightly narrow minded acquaintance of mine with a very, very limited palate one day decided she wanted to be a little more open about international cuisine. She remembered seeing some of us obsess over a dish called tteokbokki in the past - it's a Korean dish made with those exact rice cakes in the video, simmered in a sweet, savoury and spicy soupy sauce. It's a national favourite in Korea for all ages. Despite her declaration, she seemed very apprehensive about trying it, but to her credit, the little miss braved it and started chewing. A couple of very slow camel chews later (you know the kind, where they move their jaw in a circle in a single chew, very exaggerated), she spat it out immediately, claiming that it had the weirdest texture, and she couldn't stomach the chewiness. That's fine, it's not for everyone, except that I recall her response was 'what the fuck, that's not even food. I mean, no offence, but you guys eat some weird ass shit'. (The 'you guys' was directed at one of our friends who is Korean - I assume she was also meaning Koreans in general, although I wouldn't be surprised if she meant Asians in general.) Cut to about a month later, we end up at Momofuku, and order that very rice cake dish in the video. We don't tell her what it is exactly. But she doesn't even notice that we don't - she's just so fucking ecstatic to be at 'oh, my, god, Momofuku. I HAVE to Facebook this.' She starts eating. I know this may sound exaggerated, but I kid you not, she does that whole shoulder heave as she rolls her eyes back and says 'MMmmmMMMmmm oh that's sooo good!! It's like, so different! It's like, a bit soft, a bit chewy.. oh it's like eating slightly chewy gnocchi!!' She thought it was the most creative dish in the whole world. Ate over half the dish by herself. Selfish and pretentious twat. Needless to say, the rest of us at that dinner table rarely see her these days.
they said that, that dish is a momofuku calssic dish. david chang is the chef who started momofuku who is also a korean. so i would assume that it was inspired by his cultural background
luke pak My point was more that when the rick cakes (that specific style being called garae ddeok) were presented to her in its authentic Korean style, she was very judgmental and went into it with preconceived notions that it was going to be disgusting. But when the same ingredient was used in a dish from a 'hip' restaurant, she wouldn't stop raving about it. I wish I could say that perhaps it was because the dish - sauce, flavours etc - was the difference that caused her to act like a twat, but it was more that one specific ingredient she kept referring to in both occasions.
at first i was like "whats the point", then i was like "ooooh yea", had those exact same moments with people who judge purely form where it comes from, this also includes clothing
These are like rich white people pass time. Fake laughs friends, temporary never permanent. I hung out with people like that give it a few years you'll find out that's all they ever do is drink and eat.
Rich or White or whateva all anyone can do is pass time. Fake is a choice you may or not make. Everything and everyone is temporary. Drink and eat now because alive is a short warm blink and death is forever.
Being good at cooking is far more attainable than many skills. You must eat. You have money. You have time. SO...all the opportunities and motives are in place, make things you like to eat , keep it simple practice it over and over .....Being as good as a World Class Chef is setting your sights a bit high.
that was a dope video. I'm (kind of) surprised to see how many negative comments could come from such an enjoyable, interesting, and chill-vibed video. Looks like a great work atmosphere. Being in the city often, Im definitely going to try a couple of these Momofuku joints soon!
A legend was born. Im a cook round same age as Matty and he is my fucking idol. He cooks what he likes and dous not give a fuck. I know he is sober now but his attitude is the same. Love this guy
Despite all the talk about hipsters and whatever, I think the family and team efforts made by the restaurants is excellent. It really makes a work environment better when you're spending more time with them than your own family.
I admire these young cooks and I also envy them for following their dreams!!! 6 more years and my military career will be over and I will be able to follow my dream!!!
I worked under Sam Gelman and Mitchy Bates at Momofuko KO for a little while and although I'm not the biggest fan of Chang, those guys were fucking hilarious and very talented chefs. The food at this Toronto location looks pretty banging. -Bates 2.0
I ate at Momofuku a lot in NYC because all my friends who visited me there knew about the restaurant. You could not rely on them to deliver a consistently great quality each time - it was so disappointing that I had to tell some people they had shut down for remodeling so we didn't have to go there and experience shitty food. The only time they were good was when no one was in the restaurant - on a Tuesday afternoon at 3pm. Maybe the restaurants in Toronto are better coz they are newer - but the ones in NYC - not worth it - go elsewhere.
When I heard the name momofuku and realized that it was in Toronto I was like"....isn't that the place this the weird statue in front of it?" And I was right! I know its not a big deal but it cool see places on TH-cam that you've drove past be for!
they have another kitchen call COMMISSARY , and those people are behind the scene. making Daisho Ragout, noodle bar pancake batter, pickles, smoke daikon, cutting 24cases scallion ETC ETC :)
"Hipster" has become a beacon term to show everyone else how insanely jealous you are that these people get to go to work everyday and play around, get paid, and eat delicious food....and you're crawling out of bed at 7, to sit in a cubicle, hungover from a night of Keystone Light and Jimmy Johns. I would pity you, but its far too hilarious.
I've been to Momofuku in toronto and I've always enjoyed it! I don't think it claims to be Asian food just maybe inspired by Asian techniques or ingredients? I'm not expert but I find it's good and a nice twist.
Awsome!!! Fantasic Restaurant Typ - Genius Food Ideas and a young powerfull funny kitchen crew. Thats how a chef loves it to do. I hope i can visit and enjoy Momofuku @ Toronto soon. Respect and Greetings from the German Gastronomy.
It strikes me as if it's one of those places that place quality of food over the quantity of food. A place where there's a big price tag attached to 4-5 bites of something interesting. A place you either have a meal before you go, or spend like $150 just get a proper amount of food for a meal, or the place where you go then go somewhere else to get a proper meal. Definitely looks like a place for those who make enough money that they don't care that they're spending a stupid amount of money on a restaurant.
I mean ive heard this place is overhyped a million times over. eating out is an attitude. some people would rather eat out once a month at somewhere amazing then once a week at a bunch of cheaper less creative dining experiences. not to say you cant eat good for cheap. ive seen myself go through many phases with it. toronto has so many restaurants you dont even have to eat anywhere twice

KC Elle nature of my country's streetfood served in a restaurant. id bet the same thing would happen with hotdogs and odeang ( fish cake) on a stick
You shouldve called her ass out on it... people like that are so infuriating!
I got so hyped when Matty showed up :D
YOOOOO MATTY! 😁
My favorite part:
Sam: "We need a butter wheel. I've never seen one of those before in my life."
Matty: "Like 80 bucks!"
Sam: "Well, I want 2, then."
I have been passing by this restaurant everyday for eight months without knowing anything about the wonder that are happening inside.
"why this has so many views?"
**Matty shows up**
"Ouuuu, shit, that's why"
Nothing like Chefs and those days of hanging out tasting other chefs food after work and being pissed drunk till the sun comes out.
I can now see why everyone has been talking about Edulis for the past few years. The place/food looks amazing.
god, i wish i was that good at cooking and that sociable and had friends. :\
partykrew666 Lol I’m sad that this comment only has 8 likes :(
Oh well, at least it has 9 now :)
at least you're not the only one : )

Can't even comprehend how many hipsters are in this video.
how yea, just thinking the same thing, but the food looks good has fuck!
You can't even define the word hipster.
?
In the states, it seems hipsters rule the chef line of work haha
Yeah I hate ever single one of the chefs @ Momofuku Toronto and I've never even met them. It's just from this video.
This awesome kind of family environment is what i miss about working in a restaurant.
Despite all the talk about hipsters and whatever, I think the family and team efforts made by the restaurants is excellent. It really makes a work environment better when you're spending more time with them than your own family.
That first restaurant man, what a great restaurant!
2014 was the best year for Munchies.
I admire these young cooks and I also envy them for following their dreams!!! 6 more years and my military career will be over and I will be able to follow my dream!!!

I miss living in Toronto
I'm gonna need all these portions to be a little bigger. Thank you.
Wow, a total example of what life's like when u spend all day cooking with people that have to find u funny....except for matt.....he's the real deal!
the awkwardness at 15:20
All this fucking food and I'm here eating ramen and cereal but no together
***** wait what? cocksauce?
***** wait really though peanut butter? Do you do this with oriental flavor?
Random fact: momofuku refers to the inventor of instant ramen, Momofuku Ando.
***** I lost it at cock sauce
***** Momofuku refers to "Lucky Peach." Who cares if the literal translation is instant ramen or lucky peach.
I choose the wrong path in life..shouldve become a master chef.
im a master baiter so close enough
I don't get the hate, they're honestly just having fun and anyone mad about it is probably just jealous
NizzyNizerson
I'm very jealous. I'm not mad at them, but I'm definitely jealous.
Some of best international food selections in the world.
Warning: Do NOT watch Munchies when you have not did your grocery shopping, or generally have no noms in reach. Viewers be advised.
Man I wish you would have told me sooner!
10:45 you ever light a firework? my sides
Man... I want to live this culinary rock star life... haha
I liked when John Goodman carved the roast beast.
Don't know why 'hipsters' is the main theme in the comments when the video is showcasing fantastic food that looks amazeballs ~_~
okay can we just talk about how CUTE Jed the sous-chef is
Matty with the Supreme hat
We got Mr.Observation over here
Daiso..will never forgot the food. Everything on the menu is good. Yummy. They will surprise you
Matty and his kitchen had me weak lmao

I'm salivating as I'm watching this. And crying too...
I'm in pain just watching this! How can one eat and drink soooo much in one day? Whew, marathoners.
I love watching munchies sooooooo much !
Beautiful people, raw meat, and alcohol. What a fantastic combination. I really miss those days...
It's absolutly loveley to see something like this. it show's me again and again that I'm still not good enough and have to push myself. x)
144 of 146 of us are really the heart of the restaurant
this is hype. I went with my friends once and the ramen and the pork belly bun was not that amazing at all. Not to mention it was very pricy.
Which one? Because you’re full of shit lol
I worked under Sam Gelman and Mitchy Bates at Momofuko KO for a little while and although I'm not the biggest fan of Chang, those guys were fucking hilarious and very talented chefs. The food at this Toronto location looks pretty banging.

So many things i could learn from just one this episode! It'd be awesome to join this family!

You're a hipster - come at me, Bro.
So true guys. Lame to get up out of bed at 7 and go to work. It's like, don't you even have a trust fund.
Kain McDonald Eesh....there will be no "coming at you". At least educate yourself in the English language first.
"pretentious" has become a beacon term to describe fucker like you
thirty six nano seconds And I'm delighted that it offends you so.
That sous-chef with the glasses looks almost identical to the VICE reporter Thomas Morton
@3:15 chefs be in the pass doing shit like this thinking theyre all that 😂
i think this is the night the episode were matty filmed hang over cures
Ok can I please move to Toronto now? This alone makes me want to be a Canadian.
I've been to Momofuku in toronto and I've always enjoyed it! I don't think it claims to be Asian food just maybe inspired by Asian techniques or ingredients? I'm not expert but I find it's good and a nice twist.
Guy with the glasses was trying too hard. Hipster or not they are chill AF and they make good food.
The "Canard à la presse" reminds me something with Action Branson :)
*Bronson
this video is super old because matty introduced himself to the camera. we all know our king's name.
There's 146 of us, 144 are Canadians, they're really the heart and the soul of the restaurant. What?
Momo: You shouldn't start a restaurant, you will never make it, do sth else, stick with your day job.
Guy: Nope I'm doing it. And I name it MomoFukU.
Matty is the fucking shit.
Awsome!!!
