    As a young lad taking martial arts, the instructor had a wooden dummy in the dojo. Intrigued by Bruce Lee and wing chun, I photocopied the moves from a instructional handbook I had of Yip Man and posted them by the dummy. I would spend an hour after class practising and memorizing the moves. What amazed me the most is how much it toughened your forearms and hands. To the point you could REALLY slam those arms without pain or bruising. I'm 64 years old but the memories last forever.

      Eddie Hsueh you r so easily pleased. 1st off, the woodman is too high for him promoting bad shoulder habits if he got used to it. That also explained why he shrugs, un-grounded and no has no energy from the stance. Badly setup woodman as the whole wood frame moves with woodman, he is no training power with the help of the woodman springs !!

    Thank you so much I'm so near to having the entire form memorized and my jong was delivered only a few days ago. Until now I always had to build them and they never lasted long. Back then I was just freestyle not understanding how much I needed the nessicary movements. And I'm not kidding now my freestyle is insane as of last night! It just happened out of nowhere it was like a whole other world opened up right in front of me! And that's definitely Sifu Ip Mans form I've come to recognize it. I see so many fakes on youtube trying to pass off random movements as his form and I can tell it's not right just by the way they open their form. And again thank you I've nearly got the last set memorized! :)

      @virtuafighter3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@zaimakmal4503 you could get *some benefit* if you had a dummy and looked about the classical and non-classical uses of the dummy. This is what I did. Then drill with a partner the applications of the moves. (I know teaching from a master is ideal etc. etc. but not every one has access to that). There are diverse uses of the dummy. Some (Wing Chun practitioners especially), interpret it classically and think that there is the one *only* way to use it. Some are very diverse in their use of it e.g. Joseph Simonet. You choose your path.

      @sherrattpemberton6089 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know this was a year ago, but. If you had really, really good feel for body structure, power generation and subtlety then maybe. You wont have any real feedback for if you end up developing bad habits or how to correct them, which is really dangerous. Both in a fight and for long term health. It's totally worth finding a good instructor

    • @zoolkhan
      @zoolkhan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      there is one form. and this is the one. mook yan jong. it is supposed to contain 116 moves.
      However, between lineages there may be differences, so you will never get bored - just explore the differences when the moment come. Each lineage has a reason. When that gets boring there are plenty of drills you can use the dummy for the form is just a bridge, it is not the destination. With everything you do on the wooden man - imagine to work a real man while you do it, and while you think of own drills.
      the wooden man teaches you simultaneus strikes/deflects, it can teach you to turn, it can teach you to apply forward force w/o losing balance, it hardenes your bones, it teaches you distance etc etc etc
      you can take experiences from the partner drill back to the dummy and vice versa.

    • @fundamentalgungfu
      @fundamentalgungfu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! While there are variations between different schools and different teachers, there is just one wooden dummy form in Wing Chun. This particular demonstration is from Ip Man's lineage, as taught by his son Ip Chun.

      There's an old saying in Chinese Martial Arts that can be roughly translated as: "First comes your nerves. Second is your strength. Last is your Gung Fu." The ability to hold your own in a fight starts with your mindset, and your overall physical fitness. Your technique (aka "Gung Fu") is how you fight more efficiently and effectively. The techniques within the Wing Chun system are designed to be efficient and direct, and is often incorporated by many professional competitive fighters to their arsenal. No one system is going to be the ultimate answer - it's all about understanding yourself, taking what is useful, and learning where your limitations and ignorance lies.

      The hardest part to doing anything is getting started. My sifu started me with the Wing Chun Stance, and chain punches. The stance is how you understand your rooting, which is important for power. Every arm movement in the system is a derivative of the straight "Rushing Sun" vertical punch. Training your chain punches properly will teach you proper elbow positioning, how to use power, and how to connect your upper body movements to your stance.
      Once you're comfortable with your stance and your straight punches, start with Siu Nim Tao, which roughly translates to "The Little Idea." It's the very first and most fundamental empty-hand form in Wing Chun, in which you will learn all of the major physical vocabulary you'll need to take on the Wing Chun system as a whole.
      Hope this helps!

      @jbdoggy Great question! The dummy body in this video is PVC - I haven't seen any in production for steel or aluminum. The holes are cut a little bigger than the arms, and it's that give which allows it to knock about and make a bunch of noise. Maybe line the arms or hole with strips or foam, or plug it with some old t-shirts? :)

      @@Fubar_The_WEF I had Chang chuan kungfu training for several years, sir...so I know what I'm saying. How about you? Bruce Lee saw the weakness of kungfu so he modified it substantially. I'm a very happy person cuz I got out of the illusions that many masters in kungfu experienced with black eyes in the ring.

      @@reyreyes6126 All martial arts have weaknesses. If there was one perfect martial art, we'd all be learning it. Wing Chun is intended to work in the street, not in the ring.
      I have trained for 19 years in Wing Chun under Sifu Shaun Rawcliffe. His Sifu is GM Ip Chun. I stuck with Wing Chun because it works in real world situations. My Sifu used to work in personal protection (body guarding). Quite a few of my Kung Fu brothers either work as doormen or policemen. It doesn't get more real than that.
      If you still don't believe Wing Chun works then take a look at this video. This is a Kung Fu brother of mine who was attacked at a petrol station, which was probably racially motivated. th-cam.com/video/G8FDsKcb2mY/w-d-xo.html

      @@reyreyes6126 You obviously didn't read my last post nor watch the video. I train Wing Chun for self defence not competition. What makes you think that an MMA competition is in any way repesentative of a street fight? When did you last see MMA where there were 3 on 1 or where bottles or knives were involved. Where the ground isn't a smooth, clean, mat, but uneven with gravel, broken glass and dog shit. There are no referees and no illegal moves.
      Take a look at the dummy form video. At 0:13 man geng sao a neck pull but notice where the thumb is, perfect position for an eye gauge - illegal in MMA. At 0:42 fak sao; throat strike - illegal in MMA. At 1:11 a 90 degree kick against the knee joint, potentially breaking the leg at the knee - probably illegal, I'm not sure. At 1:50 jic gerk a front kick at groin height - illegal in MMA.
      You haven't trained in Wing Chun nor trained with anyone who has. Don't knock it until you've tried it.
