I want to show this video to my Wife who is a 2.5-3.0 needs to build some confidence in her serve. Even good for more advanced players that wants to make sure on the fundamentals. Nice job! Thanks!
I am new to tennis and struggling with the serve and this video has helped me so much . when things are broken down and made simplified in only a few steps, it is really helpful! TY!
This was extremely helpful! I know nothing about tennis but am learning because my high-schooler joined this year. I'll definitely look at your other videos too.
Excellent use of the curtain (fence) to learn the basic serve technique. I would add tucking the tossing arm into the chest as a way to initiate the upward motion of the racket. The tucking motion helps keep the racket arm from coming around too quickly (stay sideways as long as possible). I agree it is better to start serving toward the add court but for true beginners I would also suggest starting to serve from the service line and then gradually move back to the base line. Great job gentleman.
Thank you for the tips! I just started playing tennis this year and have three lessons down on forehand and backhand. Going to this out today and see how it goes! 😀
Planning on practicing the toss. I want to do it right, even though I've been playing a long time. I like how you showed what to do step by step. Thanks. :)
Excellent video, I've been playing tennis for 2 years now (learning)... I have lessons and play matches, but just a few chances to win because my serve is crap, I find it so difficult to learn, I practice over and over and I feel I am not coordinated enough to do it, even thinking to give up the sport many times and move on to padel. I am 32 years old and took the first racket at 30. Thanks for the video guys, I'll try the exercises and come back with more comment. Dennis
Thanks heaps for this video. Just learning and really need help with my serves, especially the ball toss. NOW I know I should be using my shoulder! Can’t wait to practise tomorrow, so thanks for the help.
This is great guys, both of you. But I prefer it when one of you guys talk! It makes the video more compact, to the point and easier to keep attention. It also gives you guys a bit more flow in your way of explaining.
Thank you so much for this, exactly what I’m looking for as a new player. Is there a video to watch after we have this down that builds off of the fundamentals of this video?
Hi, glad to hear our instruction on the serve helped! I've linked 2 videos below that I believe will help with the racquet drop and a fluid motion, both critical elements for a great serve. Hope they help! Thanks for watching. th-cam.com/video/MzzISuI98Vc/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/a2SXiih3rv0/w-d-xo.html
Love your videos! Video idea: when to change baseline rally direction (ball is short/high). I see too many players trying to switch down the line from 5 feet behind the baseline :)
@@Playyourcourt thank you! I’ve just started as a beginner at 43 and am not used to the running, do you have any tips for strengthening ankles? I know it’s not directly tennis related but thought I’d ask.
Is this a good exercise for children too? My 9 yr old granddaughter is having trouble learning to serve. Her forehand and backhand are coming along good, but she struggles with the serve.
Absolutely! Children can be easily injured learning the swing path on the serve. The 3 finger technique helps keep everything loose and helps ensure the mechanics keep the shoulder safe. Thanks for the question, best of luck to your daughter!
Good stuff. I'm a former pro athlete myself. But just started tennis. Unfortunately my coach doesn't break it down to me like that. My serve is terrible and i keep hitting the net. But all he says is i have to hit the ball higher up, i wait too long when it's fall down. He doesn't tell me how to stand or how to hold the racket. Nothing. So i'm here learning myself.
Hey Jones, sorry to hear you've been struggling with your serve. Really hope this vid helps you a ton. For a deep dive on the serve and all of its moving parts check out our serve challenge that air'd a couple weeks ago. You can still check out the recordings on www.playyoucourt.com Thanks for watching and the support!
Hi Adrian, we have a ton of content on the serve on our channel and a lot of which will help with the next steps of improving your serve. I linked a video that we released recently that I think will help as well. th-cam.com/video/x5iWJEDhyoA/w-d-xo.html
Great video. Too many coaches let beginner start with a pancake grip. Just doesn't make sense. I actually like to teach beginners to start with a spin serve. That way their forced to learn pronation.
Jeff Lewis agreed sir. Sometimes it depends on the student but our preference is certainly to get them using a continental grip and proper mechanics from the get go. Students often find it devastating when years later they have to change their serve to accommodate the rest of their game and find the established muscle memory difficult to overcome. However, if the student simply wants access to match play and needs a temporary serve we’ll incorporate the pancake as a “back-up serve” or ask them to use it only on the second serve. Thanks for the feedback Jeff, much appreciated.

Great drills, good progressions. But guys, Continental = Hammer grip. Shake hand grip= Eastern Forehand. Never seen anyone shake hands by dropping their hand from on top.
This is actually the most underrated tennis channel EVER, the editing is amazing and so is the tutorial
Thank ya sir! The kind words are very much appreciated!
Came down here to say the same thing! (3 years late, I know.)
Playing since many years, but struggling so hard with the serve. Watched so many videos, but this was by far the most detailed. Great job!
Thanks Marco, glad you enjoyed it!

This is just the happy path to learning how to serve… it does not demonstrate the issues that beginners face all the time
Great drills, good progressions. But guys, Continental = Hammer grip. Shake hand grip= Eastern Forehand. Never seen anyone shake hands by dropping their hand from on top.
Do you think the serve ist the toughest shot to learn?
Absolutely! It may be the toughest shot to learn in all of sports. Hope you're finding success on your serve Anne!
Can you pin the videos that progress from here? Pronation…stuff like that.
While serving my shoulder is paining to much way this is happening
the first five minutes repeats the information "this is for beginners". Ok Ok, I got it. BTW, that's why I'm here.
Idk bout this cuz u didn’t do a demonstration of him actually serving not once
too much talk for the toss part
