      @ANGRY WRARRL I'm not sure. The other chimps I think would've reacted more if it was 100 percent aggressive, we dont know how he was raised before coming there. Maybe he was raised as a human or performer and exposed to music and dance. Plus it probably raises complex emotions. He likes the music, but has to be alpha, and he was close to the fence and the other chimps, so that could add to the tension as well. Seemed more like a frat bro listening to enya. He was 100 percent moved by it and hardly able to control his enjoyment of it, but he still had to make sure his Bros knew he was still a tough guy.

    His name is Cozi, he was raised initially by humans and he's done that clapping routine for years. I used to watch him on their show, he was the coolest chimp there. Although most think he's displaying dominance, I don't, I think he's really just enjoying something different and maybe reminded him of when he was little raised with humans around. Very cool, he's still fun as hell to watch...

    Chimps clap as part of their dominance display. The same for standing upright, stamping, stone throwing (as this chimp did) and doing mock charges with raised fur. Males displaying also like to hit things and make a noise. The young dominant male in the group probably was not altogether sure if the human outside the fence was a threat because he was banging something and baring his teeth (what we call smiling). However he knew that there was a fence between them and the human was not moving so he contented himself with displaying. The other chimps did not apparently react since that could have started a free for all. You don't want to put yourself in the way of being noticed by a displaying male.
    That said however, the male chimp certainly indulged in rhythmic movements in time to the music and just like the fear grimace can indicate a laugh maybe the dominance display can mutate into a dance. After all, humans use dancing as a sexual/ dominance display

      I absolutely thought it started as more of a dominance/ threat display, and then evolved (pun intended) into dancing and understanding of the music. Of course it kept elements of dominance throughout, which is why only the one dude got to dance, like Conan O"Brien on the Simpsons. But that chimp absolutely understands rhythm, and overall it seemed like a cross between a Haka and a grade 9 school dance.

      @@manicmamc291 There was some territorial behavior displayed, manly at the begining though, if he realy wanted to scare the guy off, he would have presentet his teeth directly to him, jumped directly towards him repeatedly and made the distinctive noise, this seems to be slight aggression than transitioned into playfull behaivior.

    • @Diamonddavej
      @Diamonddavej 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@manicmamc291 Chimps dance to music:
      "In humans, listening to music induces rhythmic movement, suggesting a close connection between the auditory and motor areas in the brain. Sound also induces rhythmic swaying in chimpanzees. Male chimpanzees are more responsive to sound than female chimpanzees, consistent with previous research on acoustic communication in their patriarchal societies. We also found an effect of beat tempo on movement periodicity and tendency to seek the sound. These results suggest that prerequisites for music and dance are deeply rooted and existed in the common ancestor shared by humans and chimpanzees, approximately 6 million years ago."

      Chimps are one of the more aggressive species of modern day apes but I truly doubt they would have harmed him as chimps and most apes only attack when provoked and rarely kill unless they are fighting for their life. Travis the chimpanzee is what most people refer to when saying chimpanzees are killers. Except Travis was a special case as he was obese and depressed since he was never exposed to others of his own species, and on top of that he had prescribed anti depressants which are known to result in violent outbursts and mood swings. These symptoms are also shown in humans who are prescribed with similar medications. So if anything I would say Travis was a tragic case as he was driven to insanity and most chimpanzees are never this violent when on a reserve or in the wild. Gorillas have this common misconception as well which is even more far fetched since there has never been a single account of a gorilla killing a human ever, in captivity, on a reserve, or in the wild.

These creatures aren't just beefed up fire ants, they are very intelligent, an they know their actions have consequences. No intelligent animal would ever try killing every moving thing they see. If you mean that they work like a pack of wolves I would have to disagree with that as well. While all social animals do have something similar to a pack instinct, the social structure and coordination of chimpanzees do not rely on immediately being vicious when being faced with something perceived as a threat. This goes directly against their evolutionary path as chimpanzees have evolved to climb and evade said threats, instead of attack said threats. If they were to fill this role in the environment they would be the modern day equivalent of sub-Saharan leopards and even leopards are more intelligent and cunning than the animals you describe as chimpanzees.

    Ok, once he finally started clapping in perfect rhythm, it was proof that some subset of mammals in general can feel music, not just humans. We have so much evidence now esp. with elephants and cows who run to listen to music and then dance and otherwise squeal with excitement when musicians come to play for them. But clapping in time to the music??? That's fantastic evidence I'm not sure has even been documented scientifically before.

      I doubt anyone will take this seriously... but I used to date a girl who's dog would lie at my feet and pant in time to me playing guitar. At first I thought it was a coincidence... so I would stop suddenly and he would also stop and pause.... if I didn't start playing after a few seconds he would breath normally again. If I started paying he would pant in time again. I've never heard of another dog doing this - it was a cross breed, part collie, so a smart dog, with a lot of anxiety. Music seemed to calm him.

      It was certainly a dominance display it was absolutely no doubt about it especially at the end but he chased the other shapes and when you see all the other chimps are all in submissive postures.
      When rival chimps try to take over a pack they make a lot of noise.
      He definitely wasn't dancing despite being R&B every once in a while when they clap their hands like that that's an aggressive display.

      Your music is cool and some primates and some chimps do enjoy and react in a very positive way to music (you really were not the first person to ever think of this) but the reality was that this particular male did not respond in a positive way for whatever reason and while he is demonstrating a typical aggressive reaction you are looking over at the camera grinning like a fool thinking he is dancing and clapping..he is not a human and i can guarantee you that anyone that worked there with them had to have told you that was aggression. That is just as misleading and damaging as people who dress them in clothing and and do shit to make them "smile" and then look around at everyone and says "see he likes it, he is smiling"!

There probably is an ape somewhere who could learn to master simple instruments but not him. If he had been taught before testosterone kicked in maybe.

He may not have been working there, but I would think, that anyone interacting with the chimps (like this) would have needed approval &/or would have been monitored by the people in charge of the place. At the very least, I think that the staff would have been aware of his presence, and of what he was doing. I do not think that the staff would have wanted any negative reaction &/or response to have been generated by such an interaction with a human (ie., the staff wants "happy campers," if possible).
