    What did you see when you visited the Grand Teton and Yellowstone NP??

    • @billymoellendick8285
      @billymoellendick8285 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was just a first time visit. Yellowstone was so vast that I had a hard time getting my head around it. If I were to revisit I think I would spend all my time in the Tetons. I really left feeling I missed so much there. It was more of a passing through place for us going to and from Yellowstone. We just didn’t know……

      Also to note… I was not into photography at the time. A whole different perspective now!

      Did you see any beavers and black bears? oh and wolves?

    • @BudBetz
      @BudBetz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Matt, I have fallen in love with GTNP. I've been through there several times with only momentarily stopping to oooh and awwwww! Last Oct, I was in Albuquerque shooting the International Balloon Fiesta (bucket list if you've net been there) and stopped in GTNP for several days to shoot wildlife, landscapes, and fall colors on the way home.
      I got to see and shoot the same bear, 1063, as close as she was to you one afternoon and again the following morning but nowhere near the jam of cars. She is truly a beautiful girl. I also got to shoot a cinnamon brown bear and her cub on the pond trail off Moose Wilson Road. I was walking down the trail with a Canadian fellow who was telling me about he and his girlfriend watching a wolf pack take down a buffalo in Yellowstone. As we were chatting, Momma Bear and her cub pop up from the creek below and were about 30 feet from us. We stopped, she stopped, and we had a momentary stare down. She and her cub were there for the berries, ignored us, and proceeded to the trees just in front of us. They also ignored the small crowd which gathered over time and feasted in the huckleberries that were abundant. Momma bear then crossed the trail in front of us and went to a power pole, stood up on her hind legs, and proceeded to put o a show of backscratching like you would see on the movie, "Jungle Book." It was fabulous. Then on the way back across the path, she showed us that bears really do poop in the woods. I also saw a large bull moose off in the distance down the same road on a previous day although too far for quality photos, but I snapped a few none the less.
      This year I returned to Albuquerque for the balloon fiesta and again stopped in GTNP for a few days. Saw 1063 one day, but she was off in the distance on the highway to Yellowstone. The dirt road was closed due to volumes automobiles traveling down the road causing a disturbance in the Force (Star Wars humor). She was really too far to shoot well, and the Rangers were out in force along the road setting boundary's for all. I did see an abundance of elk in the fields near Jackson Lake dam early several mornings. Same foggy conditions as you had at Oxbow Bend, but it adds some mystery to the shots and glow from the sunrise. Damn cold too! Buffalo were abundant on the main highway too.
      Love your work. Appreciate you sharing. I live on Whidbey and hope to cross trails with you some day as we're not that far apart. Keep up the good work! We'll be watching!!!

      I did not see any beavers but a lot of beaver lodges and dams. We did see black bears but they were too far away to photograph. I might have some video on one in a future episode. @@noneedtochange9413

    Great video. That was Grizzly 1063. She is the daughter of "Blondie" Along with her mother she is the best looking bear in the park. I loved that you saw the Pronghorn herd too. They had a rough winter and their numbers got hit hard so it was nice to see that footage of a big herd.

    • @MattShannonPhoto
      @MattShannonPhoto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ahh yes 1063. Did I mention Blondie's daughter in the video?....I must have cut that out. Probably didn't want to make a mistake. I said bear 1096, is that one in the park too? 399 was also around with her cubs during our time there but I didn't see her. 1063 is a beautiful bear, everyone was so excited to see her.
      Thats for sharing regarding 1063 and the Pronghorn herd, I didn't know it was a rough winter. And thanks for watching! Cheers

    Hi there, loved the video. One tip we use here when shooting from our car is to get a pool noodle and cut to length that it can sit on the car window rolled down . The noodle gets slit along its length so it slides into the glass and becomes a camera rest. No bears here in Australia but great for kangaroos and emus and other wildlife.

    IMHO,Oxbow Bend is the premiere location in the park.
    Most TH-cam photographers keep the locations to themselves so thanks for sharing the wealth,anyone who has spent some time there pretty much recognizes the location.
    The serious photographers understand the rules with regard to keeping your distance,the selfie group ruins it for others.

    The first and second in B/W on the mountains is the best . And i like the pics on the Grissly . But yes, I agree that some people sacrifice their lives to get a picture, then I think you have taken it a step too far. Unfortunately, it is the same problem here in Sweden that some people should go as close as possible to, for example, a bear. Now, our brown bears are quite small compared to a Grissly, but they are also very fast and it's not something you run away from.

    Great job as always Matt but because i like you first as a person and 2nd as a wildlife photographer i am going to give you a special tip because you asked for it try to leave the photo in color from the middle and below and black and white from above and then go to the grassland and make it maybe a little more yellow, not too much if you understand me.By the way i am very far from you as a subsriber of yours. Guess where? We have very beautiful islands to help you. The first letter is G

    I was in Yellowstone and Grand Teton this past September. Saw elk, pronghorn, bison, moose and some black bears. Also spent a lot of time at Mormon Row waiting for the light to be right and the fog to clear! I see you stopped at the horse ranch by 191 as well. Love that one paint horse. What I want to know (as we didn't see any grizzlies) is what area did you see the grizzlies in and how did you "hear about" where to go when she was sighted? Now you have me wanting to go back and edit some landscapes in black and white :)

    What are those fingerless mittens you were wearing at the beginning of the video? Always looking for new gloves when out shooting. Also do you switch between video and stills while shooting the grizzly or are they stills from the video? Just found your site so subscribing.

    Damn man great video. My main question is how you’re managing to do these trips with a baby!! 🤣 I’m so jealous haha. I can’t imagine going to these parks with my 2 year old. Between the long drive and managing his sleep times it seems I’m possible to me haha how do you do it?? 😄

    • @MattShannonPhoto
      @MattShannonPhoto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! I can see why you would say that 😂.
      The video makes it look easy, but for every smooth day of shooting where the baby is having fun, poops are good, and naps are long, there are 5 days of baby duty where you have to leave the wildlife or give up a sunset shoot to focus on the family. Luckily our kid is on a good schedule and our jeep is set up for maximum nap time comfort. He is only 10 months during the time of this video, a 2 year old is a whole other ball game 😅. My wife or I will take him in the backpack too and he loves it. He is still pretty light so trekking isn’t too bad. He’s also at the age where a bottle and twist lid can keep him entertained for a while if it is new to him. We switch up and hid toys so he doesn’t get too bored. It is a lot of work though but this isn’t our first trip together and we made improvements over the summer and every kid is different. If we have another kid, it might be a different story.

    Is the grizzly required to stay 300 feet from people? (Putting the shoe on the other paw.) Or, the people must stay away from the grizzly?

    • @MattShannonPhoto
      @MattShannonPhoto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      😂 wouldn't that be something for the rangers to have a pep talk with the grizzly, informing them of their responsibilities to stay away from the people. Sadly the responsibility is on the people and not everyone can fellow the rules. It's crucial to give wildlife their space to reduce stress and avoid potential conflicts. So, in this case, it's the people who must stay away from the grizzly to promote a harmonious coexistence in their natural habitat.

    Matt, awesome video, thank you so much on sharing it. I love the fact that you can do what you do while your family gets to participate. I will be visiting Yellowstone for the first time in January and am a Z9 shooter. I will be doing mostly stills. I have two questions: I have two batteries, do you think two will last one full day? And, do you have a video on helping me start to take video on the Z9? I am yet to shoot video on it. Thanks and keep the great work coming!

    • @MattShannonPhoto
      @MattShannonPhoto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for the kind words! I'm thrilled to hear you enjoyed the video. Yellowstone in January sounds like an exciting adventure.
      Regarding your questions, having two batteries for a full day of shooting should generally be sufficient, especially if you're primarily doing stills. However, it's always a good idea to bring an extra, just in case if you are going in January. Cold weather can sometimes impact battery life, so keep them warm when not in use. I bought a great 3rd party battery for the Nikon....I think it was $80 Canadian, and it works great! I've never gone through two batteries in a single day, not sure if that helps in your decision.
      I don't have a video YET on shooting video on the Z9. I need to put one together. You are not the only one who has requested/asked that. Thank you for your questions and feedback!
