  • The journey to photograph this apex predator wasn't easy. After a few days in America's oldest national park, I finally had an encounter in the rain with a Grizzly Bear that would be a highlight of my wildlife photography career.

    Wow I visited Yellowstone in August of 2021 and I can’t wait to go back. It’s so beautiful. Also this video is excellent insight into just how technical getting these amazing photos really is. I think we forget because we all walk around with cameras better than many SLR’s from the 80’s that photography is something anyone can do, I guess that’s true but it takes skill and patience to be great at it.

    Wow! You got some stunning shots! Especially loved the Harley Quinn shots. Happy Birthday btw! One question, were all the video clips of the animals shot handheld on the S1R+Sigma 150-600 sport? Seems much more smooth and stable than I've previously seen.

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you! That Harlequin Duck was an awesome bird to see in person. And yes all the video clips were shot with that combo, and the stabilization difference you’re noticing is probably either due to it being on the Gimbalhead at that moment, or I did lots of post-stabilization in Final Cut Pro on most clips to help out. When I’m reviewing a lens I don’t do that, but on cinematic films like this I do

    Really nice shots and vid. I am torn between getting the s1r or the s5 ii. I prefer photography more than filming. I also shoot wildlife and landscape, i would get the s1r but, the only thing is that the s1r is a few year old, would that matter or is the s5 ii better because it is newer?

    • @JeremyNeipp
      @JeremyNeipp  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’d recommend checking out both my reviews, but I think for most people, the S5II would be a better choice!! The S1R is a little outdated in a few ways now and really the only big pro for it over the S5II now is it’s megapixel count or a few other small features

  • @TheGravelTraveler
    @TheGravelTraveler 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Don't feel too bad for not photographing 399, I've spent the past few years, a month each time just to photograph her. (I even tried twice this year) and still haven't gotten one, I'm usually in the wrong place at the time she comes out and then she tends to disappear for a couple weeks at a time. Her the Pika's, and a mountain lion are the only animals I have yet to photograph in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem.
    Even though I didn't see the queen of the Tetons this year, I did have encounters and photographs of 18 different grizzlies and almost the entire Junction Butte wolf pack. Which definitely made up for missing out on her, but I'll try again next year.
    Great photo's of the Harlequins which if I had to guess they were at LeHardys Rapids?

      I shot this video in May, and I’d highly recommend either May or September/October as you get migrations and some unique weather at those times. The migrations make things more active, the weather makes more interesting shots, however can also be a challenge with rain occasionally so worth keeping in mind

    What makes Yellowstone bear photos not special is hundreds of other people getting the same shot. Word gets around quickly of bear sightings. Its almost like a zoo photography

    • @alansach8437
      @alansach8437 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      "Hundreds of other people...." don't get the "same" pictures. Compare the photographs of bear 399 taken by Tom Mengleson (that sell for thousands of dollars) to those taken by "hundreds of other photographers"!! You can have ten photographers standing next to one another, shooting the same thing, and no two will get the same shot. Also, it is hardly like "zoo" photography. These are wild animals. Unlike a zoo, you can't just go at your convenience and know that you are going to have a captive animal in front of you. Dedicated photographers spend weeks, months, standing around in (often) freezing conditions, all sorts of weather, waiting for animals that fail to appear far more often than they do. It's not like a tourist driving through the park, sees a bear along the road, jumps out and takes a few shots before moving on! A dedicated photographer will stay there from first light in the morning to last light in the evening, regardless of the weather, regardless how hungry they get, how much their legs or back may hurt, and sometimes how much they have to go to the bathroom, waiting for that perfect shot!

    • @bobbyburtonphotography
      @bobbyburtonphotography 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’d agree to an extent. However, you’re assuming because someone has a camera that they are a photographer. A lot of people barely know how to operate their camera let alone have any technique.

    • @alansach8437
      @alansach8437 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bobbyburtonphotography I absolutely agree with that. I would also include in that category people with a camera who care more about the photo than the animal. True dedicated wildlife photographers will leave or give up the shot rather than cause harm or stress to the animal. Unfortunately, there are far too many today who think first and foremost of getting the shot and posting it on line. They don't care about the animal. They don't care about fellow visitors. And they don't care about the hard working rangers who are there to protect the resource. I do not consider them "photographers". They are predatory paparazzi.
      But you don't go to the desert to photograph walruses! Bear photographers go to Yellowstone because that's where the bears are! You could go out in the National Forest and spend ten years and not get what it's possible to get in Yellowstone in two weeks. So you do it respectfully, and you do your homework about the subject, and you follow the rules and you obey the law. But no one should delude themselves that those Mengleson shots are easy!
