Its inconceivable where Hendrix took this song. Jimi was usually more undisciplined, just wild man improv, because it was still coming from some place none of the other guys had access to. But with this song he labored on the production, maybe out of massive respect for Dylan. And so with that attention to detail, the reverence for the material, he trasformed it to the ride on the Mystery Train it always cried out to be. His vision and vocal, his perfect choices instrumentally, give his version a majesty Dylan heard and knew he could never match. And he humbly said so. Gone at 27, his version is the most fully realized thing he ever did. But....what might have been....

without bob writing it, you don't have jimi's version and people have criticized bob's songs and singing forever and luckily he goes on giving people criticizing him something to do. anybody criticizing bob's singing in 1974 of this song may or may not get the chance to hear how he does it in 2024 in what could be his final year of touring. i'm thrilled he bothers. i know he has rent money!

@@tommythevenow3476 well said, i get people liking hendrix's version more but i think Bob does it better in every rendition. Hendrix's music is more revolved around his guitarplaying. The passion in the words goes lost in his version, especially in his live versions, although they are all great listening-experiences. Bob's articulation is unbeatable, and although Hendrix could play the guitar like nobody else, Robbie Robertson sure is one hell of a guitarist!
