Try using a high amperage test light to confirm circuit integrity or test for voltage drop. It sounds like you have a bad wire. I’m guessing the wire is in decent enough condition to allow the brake controller to detect the brakes, but when you squeeze the brakes the increase in current from the magnets causes the wires resistance to increase, causing voltage drop which will cause you to lose connection.
My guess is your brake controller is probably weak. I'd bare the positive lead right at the brake solenoid coil and test for voltage. (it should vary at given brake percentages like 8-12 volts etc.)
Why don’t you get a 7-Way Round Pin Tractor Plug Tester…Trailer Circuit tester. Seems like a good tool to have to help troubleshoot wiring issues and not very expensive. I’m no trailers wiring expert but if I was doing what you do I would have a simple tool to help narrow it down. Just my two cents. On a side note….I don’t think having a engine idle matters for non dpf and egr trucks. Trucks with DPF and EGR intact is a different story and I’m not talking about 5-10min warmup but idle for hours on emissions intact trucks is a killer. Don’t tell Biden but my truck lost allot of emission weight 😂😂😂😂😂
And how is that going to help the fact that the truck isn't putting out power? Come on now, basics 101 🤣 They were working and then they weren't again. My brake controller has been acting up. They have power and work if I just put straight power to them. That brake controller is over 6 years old. It doesn't work great on my Dad's 20fter either, but his on his Durango can lock them up.
To be fair, though, there was a TON of messed up wiring on this thing. I fixed all the lights first but wasn't willing to do the work to check the brakes if I wasn't replacing them. There was so much corrosion in grounds and multiple splices in the whole system. They all worked together with the failing controller to just be a nightmare. Usually it's just one issue. This time, it was about 10 all coming together.
Hauling new RV's out of Indiana, those trailers had really bad brakes. Manufacturers gave a breakin procedure to get them to work better until broken in. It was scary when you had to go through Chicago with shitty trailer brakes. Just saying so you realize the new brakes will get better with use...
Do you plan on getting another trailer for hotshot work? Or are you going to just stick to power only loads? Is there a big difference in pay between the power only and trailer loads, not having to maintain a trailer would be a plus.
End goal is to quit all together. I just need a trailer for customer trucks is all. I still have to tow that black 06 back to Alabama and I have no idea what I'm using to do it yet. As for difference, power only is freedom whereas a trailer is a commitment. I can do freight money doing power only but I have direct customers and know the market. For the average Joe, freight will pay way more and be more consistent work.
Keep on keeping on, Steve 💪🏾😎

with as much wiring you do you should get a powerprobe one of my new fav tools
I have 2
@ ahh there one of the most useful tools
Am having a problem one of the signal on one side

I keep one in the truck
That break away battery is useless with 3 axles... just saying.. LOL
Maybe try adjusting the brakes……
