Greetz from germany 🎉 Here in germany we have a full grown fan community around the Buhanka/Buchanka. This van offer a poor quality but on the other side you can fix all probs on the outback for your self . An engine swap is the most interessting upgrade ever. I seen in russia a loaf with an engine swap from a older Dodge/Jeep 318" SB with an injection, means type of engine mid 90's year. For myself i am interessted where your engine swap goes/went .... The most prob sound the short wheel stand, next to a engine and transfer case plus the driveshaft in need. A manual tranny will solve many probs in length of space but the linkage of a manual tranny will be the next prob. I hope your project will be succesful. Sorry for my english babbling,i' ve gotten my last lesson in english language 1982 at school
@@Hirugva007 Well, which is more likely, that the van picked up a rare and recently discovered radioactive mineral, or that this van, which is known to overheat, was leaking purple coolant like Royal Purple, which mixed with some dirt when they took it offroad? That could have happened in the TFL series, they were pouring tons of coolant in it, and it was constantly overheating during their little adventure.
This was a fantastic video. David is such a craftsman, love watching him work though problems to find solutions. Thanks TFL for a great Christmas present.
This is cool. My Dad have swapped a 5 cylinder diesel from an 1980 Mercedes in our UAZ, 25 years ago. Back then it felt like a spaceship. But this is the next step . ❤

What Great video !!! really enjoyed it and can't wait for next part. Its always so great to see a 'diy" work on the cars and fabrications . to use what you have available and make best of it . know from my own experience working on my truck lol
Fantastic work, gentlemen! Think about two things: better brakes, because the Buchanka doesn't have good ones, and since you have a better engine and will be able to go faster, it's good to take care of safety. Secondly, think about whether it wouldn't be better to replace the leaf springs with parabolic ones. It's not an expensive investment, but it really makes a big difference off-road.
And Merry Christmas! Great gift for you Andre. And David, a Merry Christmas to you Mr. Santa! Hope you and your family are having an excellent day together! You deserve it with all the hard work you put into these projects for others. Looking forward to seeing your completed project as well. Stay safe and healthy!
David, what about a hitch mounted ladder? Use a receiver extension as a base and weld angled square tube to offset it to the left. Yes it would be a little loosey-goosey but put a rattle-eliminating bolt through a welded on captured nut and it would eliminate rattles while on the road. It could even incorporate a fuel can holder and backup light on it.
I know these cars well, I used to disassemble and assemble them down to the last nut. The problem is not to squeeze the V8 engine in, the problem will come later. This engine will not have proper cooling in this cramped space, there will be constant overheating, no electric ventilators will be enough. It is necessary to make changes to the body and increase the space inside for air circulation. Secondly, the original (kolhoznye) axles must be thrown out and put Dana or from the Defender. The original bridges without hypoid gear made using Ford technology in the 30s will not withstand the torque of the new engine and transmission. I really hope that you will listen to my words and while everything is still not assembled, redo what I advised. Good Luck!
@ East coast. I imported these after I moved back to the USA. I have a Trabant and a ZAZ on the way from Bulgaria as well. Should be arriving port in two months. They’ve been sitting in my garage in Sofia for a few years. I restored the ZAZ when I used to live there.
