A note on the Knuckles scene, though, is that it's super inaccurate due to a simple mistake: _Medeival English Chivalry and Ancient Japanese Bushido are not the same._ Yes, they're similar in a lot of ways, but that scene conflated them where a big difference exists. See, Bushido considered suicide to be a way to clear up intense dishonor, especially family dishonor (seppuku), while Chivalry is based in Christian ideaology which considers the act of suicide itself to always be a dire sin no matter what. Thus, the scene would have been accurate if he was a samurai, but not a knight.
Also, the concept of Chivalry as "Serving your king." is actually what BUSHIDO meant. To a Samurai, "Honour" was what ever your lord wanted. If it served your Lord, it was honourable. If it failed your lord, it was dishonourable.
I remember when I was a kid I was playing black knight and got to the plot twist with merlina. I totally didn’t see it coming and was freaking out. lol good times
@@_lemon52 I honestly saw it coming. I never liked her, even as a seven year old, because her being a good guy just seemed forced to me. So while I saw it coming, I really loved the twist and still do to this day.🥴
My dumbass 7-year-old self saw the credits after the midboss and thought the game was over. Didn’t realize I was only halfway done until like 5 years later when I booted up my Wii U out of nostalgia and clicked on my old save
Fun fact, in arthurian legend, Nimue(the lady of the lake) was the adoptive mother of Lancelot. So Amy was Shadow's mom in this game, do with this information as you will.
The character relationships are really funny if you take them as literal in Arthur’s world. Silver is Shadow’s son and Amy’s grandson, Blaze and Jet are siblings and the best one, Shadow will go on to fuck Sonic’s wife behind his back. First Eggman and now Sonic? Who will stop this man?!
Better yet, in Arthurian legend, Galahad was the son of Lancelot, aka Silver is Shadow's son, as Shadow is immortal I kinda like the idea of him having a son 200 years later, someone to look after the world Maria loved so much (maybe he got tired especially because he would have outlived many of his friends)
I've actually finished Black Knight once, but that was months ago, and I haven't touched it since. I do want to revisit it someday, especially since watching gameplay footage in this video just makes me think "wow, this looks a lot more fun than I remember." Personally, I don't think linear level design in a Sonic game is necessarily a bad thing (if it was, the Sonic/Shadow levels of SA2 wouldn't get nearly as much love), but I do wish Black Knight had more actual platforming challenges in between all the combat. Would've made it feel that much less like a wagglefest. ...the battles against the Knights of the Round Table are the best ones in the game? Man, now I *really* want to try this game again... I do remember liking pretty much every other aspect of this game, and Knight of the Wind might be my favorite vocal track in the entire series. Cool video overall! Live Life was such a meaningful song to me, I was actually writing a book while listening to songs I like, but when I was about to be done, I decided to have people if the book ever gets released, to have them play Live Life. Because the character I made, Speed-Boy, while in a testicular Asian in the past he still tries to live life to its fullest even when he's trying to prevent something that's devastating, well he doesn't belong there he still wants to help people. But when you get back home he brings two friends and a girlfriend with him to his time because they were the ones who kept him company during his time in the past.

I was looking for an long review/analysis video of Sonic and the Black Knight and I decided to give this one a shot, typically stuff with less views also points fingers towards the quality of the video. Fan theory: I think the characters are the same ones from Sonic's world, they just spent too much time there and eventually forgot who they were. The reason Merlin (I'm assuming) didn't pick Sonic as a companion to his King Arthur project, was because he didn't have the tendency for loyalty the other characters had instilled in them. Knuckles to the Master Emerald, Blaze to her own kingdom, and Shadow to the promise to Maria. Their loyalty was corrupted for a new purpose. I imagine Merlin Taught Merlina that it's okay to manipulate people for a greater purpose, since she does the same to Sonic, and she has his name (or adopted his name, which would have the same inplications). The reason Merlin knew Sonic wouldn't crack is because he never had loyalty to anything in particular, or rather, he will help all people in need equally. People have a tendency to be loyal to "their own kind", which is ironic if the three Knights aren't even who they thought they were. Anyway this is unironically the best Sonic game story, and right up there with Ratchet and Clank and Majora's Mask honestly.
One little thing I like in the ending section is that implication that the reason the story's gone off the rails is because one of the characters read the book. :D And even worse, she skipped to the end!
Thanks for the video! After so long, I'm glad to see other people appreciating a game I've loved since I was a kid. A couple of notes: Secret Rings came out four months after the Wii, so it was more a case of "use the features of the new system" rather than following trends. Black Knight definitely treads more familiar ground with its motion controls, though! I'm several years late on this, but I'd recommend balancing the audio a bit better between VO and gameplay/effects. I found myself adjusting the volume a *lot* between long stretches of either one, and it would be easier to watch if they weren't at such different levels!

Never did play Black Knight but the Storybook cutscenes have way more effort and heart put into their presentation - what with actual drawings that have some animation - compared to the stock background images and still character models from Free Riders or Team Sonic Racing. Same goes for the other half of Forces cutscenes with the talking heads like it's trying to be Metal Gear or something. Here's hoping they start to try again in the 2020s like they did from 1998-2009 when cutscenes were becoming a thing for the games. Same goes with getting back to not being afraid to take things seriously again. Because if the characters don't care enough to do that, then why should we? Black Knight Sonic: Oh, I get it. No problem! I'm used to stuff like this! Colours Sonic: Hey, did somebody here order a clobbering? [The submarine makes a sound.] Are you sure? It says somebody ordered an extra large clobbering topped with everything. [The submarine blinks.] Hmm, okay... tell ya what. I can't take this thing back so I'll give you an extra large clobbering for nothing. Hope you're hungry
@@_lemon52 I certainly hope so, because that past decade of nostalgic stagnation really did feel like Merlina had her hand on the wheel of where the series went (or didn't). Hence the simpler stories, the lack of playable characters with a near decade of Sonic or bust, out of the OC from Forces and outsourced games like Boom and Mania. Because Sonic 06 had all that stuff and we don't want another 06 on our hands, Sega must think. Also with saying about Merlina, I feel this is a good sum up of it all with the impact of 06 and when some people demand Sonic return to his "roots" [Merlina, now transformed as the Dark Queen, is sitting on a throne.] Dark Queen: I've been expecting you. Sonic: Just one question before we settle this. Why'd you do it? Weren't we trying to save this franchise from the underworld? Dark Queen: This franchise will fail one way or another. Such is its fate. Sonic: Huh? Dark Queen: Do you know what is to become of this franchise? Sonic: Beats me. [The Dark Queen starts to walk forward] Dark Queen: The introduction of humans and guns shall doom the franchise. Sonic is struck down by Mephiles, and is then kissed back to life by a human princess. Sonic: ... Dark Queen: This was to be our ideal world. But it will not last... Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends will end in ruin. The 3D world my grandfather Merlin created led to nothing but mistakes... But I can succeed with the power of the scabbard. Creating a 2D kingdom that never ends. [Uses a small portal to summon a Sonic The Hedgehog Mega Drive cartridge.] [A flashback of the "To the Blacksmith" scene with Merlina picking up the same Mega Drive cartridge. Sonic finally realizes what her plans are.] Sonic: What good is a world where Green Hill goes on forever!? Dark Queen: My sorrow at its ruin runs deeper than the depths of the underworld. Do you not understand? Sonic: No! And I don't want to!
Imma legit replay black knight with a ps4 controller. Sounds fun! Im one of those who also has nostalgia for this game. Same scenario too. It was a birthday gift with the secret rings and i played the crap out of both. Liked black Knight more and it will always have a soft spot in my heart
I feel like Sonic and the Black Knight is probably my biggest contender for a remake from the ground up. There are certainly some better Sonic games, and _definitely_ Sonic games that would benefit from a remake (cough cough 06) but I feel like Black Knight had some of the highest potential in the series if executed correctly. It would require entirely rebuilding the game from the ground up to improve physics, progression, overall gameplay, etc., but in a perfect world, this game could be a contender for the best in the series. (I’m kinda disappointed there wasn’t any sort of fan project to improve this game like P-06 - I’d have loved to see this game even with more minor adjustments.)
This is my favorite sonic game on the Wii and one of my favorites in the entire franchise,i dislike Secret Rings so it really was a surprise that this came right after and very likely re-using content and the engine,i still spotted many similarities to that game but they did not stop my enjoyment.
i dont get how ppl hate this game lol ... its literally made for kids but still has so much care and effort into it... a story abt living life to the fullest like ts os beautiful... and the worst/trash parts of the game add to its beauty haha also SHADOW THE BEST
@@_lemon52 Thank you for responding to me. Just so you know, I really enjoy your videos and I like how you have the balls to play an intro of the games with music (since people nowadays cant focus for more than 10 seconds), and your accent makes it so funny when you say "fookin-(insert adjective here)"
you know about the timing part of the soul surge right? (if you time it right you hardly loose and bar) also you can just spam jump slash on the knights as there ai can't really help deal with it if you do it right
Probably not gonna see this comment but despite its flaws this is one of my favorite Sonic games and I’d even say games ever it’s solid The story , world and ost are golden The gameplay is nowhere near as janky as some claim
You know what, as good as the story and music is to black knight, i still find myself prefering secret rings in those regards. As annoying as that game can be its story and music are undeniably great
I think you’re giving this game WAY too much credit. The story wasn’t as great as you say it is. I honestly groaned at it the whole time and questioned so many things about it. I’ve also seen the twist villain trope so many times, so Merlina wasn’t that special. Sonic and Caliburn were more annoying than I remember and the knights were just cringe. It has a good message about living life to the fullest, but Sonic is not the right franchise to tackle such issues. He’s a blue cartoon hedgehog for corn sake! I’m so tired of Sonic games trying to be big and epic and deep when he should just be fighting Eggman and going on fun adventures. For that reason, Colors was a MASSIVE breath of fresh air until Sega decided to make the mistake of trying to be serious again with Forces and Frontiers. You can call it nitpicking, but I go to Sonic for the gameplay, not the story. Besides, story doesn’t really matter in Sonic, especially if the gameplay sucks. To me, this isn’t a Sonic game - it’s a game with Sonic in it. Why does Sega feel the need to force combat into a high speed platformer? It just doesn’t work and Black Knight is another example of why. Sonic is the only character worth playing as, as the other characters suck at combat and traversal, aside from Knuckles who can just glide over everything (and Blaze is the worst character to play as and that’s just a travesty). The fights with the knights are no more complex than the Stalfoes fights in Ocarina of Time, King Arthur is a mess of frustration and Merlina was the only good boss in the game, which isn’t a high bar to clear. Honestly, the whole time I played Black Knight, I wanted to play Capcom’s Knights of the Round. Why this game is suddenly getting praise now is beyond my comprehension.
Meh, I never liked this game. The momentum was too clunky and the swordplay felt more intrusive than complementary, the enemies constantly got in your way to slow the pacing down and the motion controls never really felt accurate. It could've been really good if it controlled and was designed better, but I think this being a glorified Wii Remote experiment killed it.
i'd say the music and story carry this game. when i first played it i really liked it but i stopped playing because of the 2nd king arthur boss it was bullshit
Black Knight dialogue Sonic: I don't suppose you're gonna let me by? Heh! You look just like this knucklehead I know! Gawain: Ho! You dare mock Sir Gawain, knight of the Round Table!? An act most unwise, my friend! Sonic: Wait, wait! I'm not trying to pick a fight with you. I was heading to a cave to save some people from a dragon. Gawain: Bah! You cannot fool me with your lies! No doubt you're after the dragon's treasure! Sonic: Oh, man... You sound just like that knucklehead, too! Gawain: You have defied King Arthur. This place shall be your grave! Colours dialogue Sonic: Hey, did somebody here order a clobbering? [The submarine makes a sound.] Are you sure? It says somebody ordered an extra large clobbering topped with everything. [The submarine blinks.] Hmm, okay... tell ya what. I can't take this thing back so I'll give you an extra large clobbering for nothing. Hope you're hungry Thank the gods those clowns, Pontac and Graff, are finally gone!
My experience with this game(no details because it is already too long): I first saw this game on youtube when I was a kid. I didn't get into he series until I got lost world for free on my trusty old wiiu,(though I bought that game on steam over a year ago, but that is off-topic) so I think this happened after that? Idk. Anyways, I really loved the story and the soundtrack and thought the game was amazing. I was always more of a Storyperson than a gameplayperson, that was why. I never saw the last few pieces of the game for some reason, but I still remembered the game fondly writingwise. Then one or two years ago, I revisited the game's cutscenes out of nostalgia and then I noticed while watching the last few cutscenes I never knew...."wait, that doesn't make sense. I don't remember this game being bad, what's going on?" Then I dissected the story on a grander leveö and the love died. Yeah, I don't like it anymore because it just fell apart for me. Later some dude in the same discordserver as me constantly used "this guy likes Black Knight" as a reason for why I am not to be taken seriously and it just annoyed me. Even if it was not it's own fault, this game was still pulling me down, despite me specifically saying every time that I was wrong as a kid and I dislike it. I felt ashamed because the series I like was associated with this game I didn't like. I then looked at the music and while I still like it(minus With Me), the lyrics of some pieces just bother me at this point too. I then went from thinking that the concept of Sonic with a sword was great and wasted to now thinking it was just a mistake. I am not digging at the gameplay because I never played(I am not one of these guys that bash gameplay without experiencing it myself), but it is not like I am interessted either. I rather play secret rings with a controller. Overall, I just have a very bad experience with black knight, partly because of the game itself and partly because of external circumstances. And with time, my opinions of it lowers more and more. I wish Crush40 and Jason didn't have *this* as their exit from the series. I know I am very selfish here, but I honestly kinda wish I could ignore and forget this game. But I can't, it will always come up in the discussion of the Series. So either I just exit the fandom or it will always loom over my head as a Sonic-fan. Most of the modern era is also painful, but that is less of a personal experience and more just the writers being a joke, but that is another discussion entirely.
During soul surge, you must flick the nunchuck instead of the Wii mote to trigger the Kick attack. It’s best used for breaking defenses and kicking those blue orbs away to blast away debris.
I have to disagree about the combat having depth. The enemies are super easy to deal with and you don’t really need to do a combo swing at all. Just do that homing buzzsaw attack the entire game and you’re golden; it’s even faster than the soul surge, which is really just a glorified quick time event move. If you try to do normal sword swings, it just drags down the pace, not to mention that the swings are super delayed and unresponsive at times. It doesn’t get better with the other characters either, since they’re all worse than Sonic in one way or another. This game’s combat pales in comparison to stuff like Zelda, Devil May Cry, Kingdom Hearts and No More Heroes. Oh, and the bosses aren’t as well designed as you describe. The Knights of the Round are stupid easy while King Arthur is stupidly frustrating. You also don’t need to time your strikes on Arthur or Marlina, you can just slash none stop and it gets the job done. Seriously, did we play the same game?
A note on the Knuckles scene, though, is that it's super inaccurate due to a simple mistake: _Medeival English Chivalry and Ancient Japanese Bushido are not the same._ Yes, they're similar in a lot of ways, but that scene conflated them where a big difference exists. Dark Queen: Do you know what is to become of this franchise?
Sonic: Beats me.
[The Dark Queen starts to walk forward]
Dark Queen: The introduction of humans and guns shall doom the franchise.
[Uses a small portal to summon a Sonic The Hedgehog Mega Drive cartridge.]
[A flashback of the "To the Blacksmith" scene with Merlina picking up the same Mega Drive cartridge. Sonic finally realizes what her plans are.]
Sonic: What good is a world where Green Hill goes on forever!?
Dark Queen: My sorrow at its ruin runs deeper than the depths of the underworld. Do you not understand?
Sonic: No! And I don't want to!
I played this game a few months ago, and I can in fact confirm that the controls are the finest dog shit you will ever encounter.
Imma legit replay black knight with a ps4 controller. Sounds fun! Im one of those who also has nostalgia for this game. Same scenario too. It was a birthday gift with the secret rings and i played the crap out of both. Liked black Knight more and it will always have a soft spot in my heart
This is one of my favorite Sonic Games of all time
sonic with a sword looks so fucking good, imagine if they all just used weapons
Knight of the wind is the most nostalgic thing I heard ever
i dont get how ppl hate this game lol ... its literally made for kids but still has so much care and effort into it... a story abt living life to the fullest like ts os beautiful... and the worst/trash parts of the game add to its beauty haha also SHADOW THE BEST
I gotta admit, this is my favorite sonic game, mostly because it is the first one I ever played, but also because it's just fun.
we need a remaster of black knight were you need to learn the combat style
This video is amazing, I recommend changing it's thumbnail so it can get more views cuz the thumbnail quality DOES NOT match that of this video.
Ok, I’ll take that on board thanks
@@_lemon52 Thank you for responding to me. Just so you know, I really enjoy your videos and I like how you have the balls to play an intro of the games with music (since people nowadays cant focus for more than 10 seconds), and your accent makes it so funny when you say "fookin-(insert adjective here)"
This will always be one of my favourite sonic games! Definitely top 5 for me 😁👍
you know about the timing part of the soul surge right? (if you time it right you hardly loose and bar)
also you can just spam jump slash on the knights as there ai can't really help deal with it if you do it right
I mean, it's definitely not Secret Rings, I'll give it that. 😅
*the return of the king*
0:03 some people have this power..
Probably not gonna see this comment but despite its flaws this is one of my favorite Sonic games and I’d even say games ever it’s solid
The story , world and ost are golden
The gameplay is nowhere near as janky as some claim
Fair play man glad u enjoyed it. Thanks for watching, I think it’s deffo flawed but better than people make out
i literally didnt even know this game existed, it aounds good tho
You know what, as good as the story and music is to black knight, i still find myself prefering secret rings in those regards. As annoying as that game can be its story and music are undeniably great
very underrated video
the voice definitely fit sonic himself but it feels doesnt really fit into the Frontiers vibe overall
does a sonic game need to 'make sense'? is it not enough for sonic to have a sword and gauntlet and for it to be cool as fuck?
Icl if you find King Arthur to be frustrating to fight, it's a skill issue. But I do agree with Merlina being the best boss of the game
what do you think about the cutscence of sonic and amy at the final of the game
Meh, I never liked this game. The momentum was too clunky and the swordplay felt more intrusive than complementary, the enemies constantly got in your way to slow the pacing down and the motion controls never really felt accurate. It could've been really good if it controlled and was designed better, but I think this being a glorified Wii Remote experiment killed it.
The world building and story were alright, but I hated this game because the controls were incredibly awful
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🦇 🎃 🕯 👻 🕸
I actually liked it. Was able to 100 percent
i'd say the music and story carry this game. when i first played it i really liked it but i stopped playing because of the 2nd king arthur boss it was bullshit
no its a great game defiantly better than colors
Black Knight dialogue
Sonic: I don't suppose you're gonna let me by?
Colours dialogue
Sonic: Hey, did somebody here order a clobbering? [The submarine makes a sound.] Are you sure? It says somebody ordered an extra large clobbering topped with everything. [The submarine blinks.] Hmm, okay... tell ya what. I can't take this thing back so I'll give you an extra large clobbering for nothing. Hope you're hungry
Thank the gods those clowns, Pontac and Graff, are finally gone!
@@DemonDethchase Colors is just embarassing lol.
Colors is my favorite 3d Sonic game the only good thing about this game is the story which I can watch on TH-cam
@@baylordiamond5611 well the community settled down on not liking colors so please dont ruin it
@@baylordiamond5611 what about the soundtrack? It easily features one of the best final boss themes in series in With Me.
My experience with this game(no details because it is already too long):
I first saw this game on youtube when I was a kid.
Most of the modern era is also painful, but that is less of a personal experience and more just the writers being a joke, but that is another discussion entirely.
can you tackle sonic rush next
Wait how old is this? Did sonic invent isekai?
No, next question
Kick move you say, how does one perform it?
During soul surge, you must flick the nunchuck instead of the Wii mote to trigger the Kick attack. It’s best used for breaking defenses and kicking those blue orbs away to blast away debris.
@@jasontheyoshi I think you can just do it normally in midair without the Soul Gauge as well.
@@michaellane4054 Nah, soul surge must be activated or else you can’t lock on to an enemy
@@jasontheyoshi I just did it today. It takes a lot of practice, but you do need to know how to kick without Soul Surge to 100% the game.
@@jasontheyoshi you can also kick by pressing the Z button, so there might be two kicks in this game.

Thank you for God for. This Day Thank you for these people help them know u
No
I’ve seen worse I love this game
can i get a tldr i dont wanna watch a whole hour
Sonic and the Black Knight is my favorite Sonic game. 🫠
