Generations is honestly my favorite Sonic game of all time, I started playing the Sonic franchise in like, 3 months I think, and I replayed this game probably more than any game in my life. Friggin AWESOME video dude, keep going with this content!

26:00 Fun fact, the trick system actually has a secret mechanic. If you mix up your tricks (directional inputs) you get more boost than spamming one direction, and this is denoted by the climbing sound effect that plays when you do each trick. If you spam a trick you get the same dull sound effect. Though tbh, even spamming one direction gives you more than enough to never run out.

I finished this game for the first time a few days ago on PC and I adored it. Not a big Sonic fan as I've never even played the originals and the only games I finished not including this one was Sonic R and Adventure 2 Battle, but this game just pushed all the right buttons for me. All levels with the exception of that Planet Wisp world were very fun. Great scenery and lots of cool shortcut and secrets in the stages. I'm currently working towards 100% completition and those challenge stages give off some nice variety. I absoultely LOVE how you can use songs you've unlocked on any stage. When I unlocked Super Sonic Racing as a selectable song the game instantly became even more enjoyable for me, that track is my jam. Looking forward to trying out lots of mods once I finish my vanilla game first, they look pretty high quality. This was a great video dude, you covered a lot of information about the game.
Funny thing about Sonic Forces is when it was released my response was kinda like "meh". Didn't love it or hate it. But since the end of 2022 I've soured on it a lot, and you know what happened? Sonic Frontiers came out and reminded me of just how good this franchise can be when it's actually done right. :) That all said, I can't talk about Forces anymore without mentioning the Overclocked mod that was released for the PC version in December. That thing was really something else.
When sonic generation came out, people were pissed. It was insane. They didnt lik the story and said it was too short, but i thought it was comepletly fine, game was 30$ and stuffed with charm
I think exoparadigmgamer put it best when it comes to story in sonic "you're playing as a blue hedgehog who goes through loop de loops, how good does the story have to be?" With that mindset i loved the game as a whole
I do get your point haha. But for me previous games set the standard a lot higher. Sa1 onwards the games pushed storytelling a lot more and in my opinion a good story can really help a sonic game, like unleashed or sa2. So I prefer a bit more ambition in that department. But I do get where ur coming from haha
@_lemon52 oh I prefer it as well, I just keep my standards a bit low considering the premise of these games is so simple for the most part. All I expect is a story that can justify its plot happening
@@_lemon52 honestly I’m quite excited for it, the original sonic generations was my first major sonic game I played (except for sonic colours on the ds) and I’m glad they are doing more with it with shadow too instead of just a remake. It looks super good and will definitely be a platinum trophy for me
having played sonic frontiers lately i really like how sonic feels when you turn the settings up to max (sadly not all the stats effect the game play in the actual levels)

When it comes to Generations' story I think that in fairness, it needed to be simple and silly because the premise of the game *as a story* is absolute batshit and does not work. It's fine anyway because the same premise as a *game* is excellent, and all the story needed to do was give us the flimsiest excuse to play it. Make it any more complicated than that and you're gonna actually lose players' attention when they realize nothing that's happening makes any sense. I think they actually made the right call here by basically declaring right from the start "look, this game doesn't really support a story, so we're barely gonna have one because you all want to play it anyway". The only other way to make sense of anything that was going on here would be drowning us in exposition, which is much worse. ..... One thing I really wish the game had done in DLC was to add full reinterpretations of Stardust Speedway and Final Rush, both of which already had their art assets remade and in the game. Final Rush especially 'cause it's a phenomenal piece of level design that constantly gets overlooked. Used to think this was a pipe dream but after seeing what Doom Eternal -- a game with a similar AAA backing and the same kind of obvious creative passion behind it -- was able to do with its DLC episodes, I'm starting to think it would have been possible.
While you are right about the classic level design in Generations being better than Sonic 4, when it comes to the controls and physics they are definitely worse in every aspect, Classic Sonic air movement feels extremely stiff, there's a weird heaviness when bouncing of enemies/objects and the momentum is all over the place when rolling or walking on some inclinations.
26:34 I dont know if you know that but sonic rush did this before we all know that in rush you B to do tricks but if you press A after pressing B even once you will do a finishing trick so you want to mash B as much as possible before doing a finishing trick because if you do a finishing trick you cant do normal tricks after it until you land
Lol another topic. 'cuz when you were talking about the modern remix of Escape from the City you didn't mention the best part -- they added a bridge section with new lyrics. Absolutely above and beyond thing they did not need to do and it was so cool to hear it the first time. Will say I think Modern Sonic's remixes fall apart in the last third of the game. Because up till that point they were adapting his music tracks to a style more like the music in Unleashed or Colours or even 06... but now they have to adapt that style to itself, and it feels like they're changing things just to say they changed them, which is a problem when the original tracks had basically struck the perfect balance and sound already. Modern Rooftop Run remix I have to admit I really dislike 'cause for some reason they turned down the energy on the rhythm guitar and drum mix, at the same time as the stage is ramping up the action compared to the original version. In fact, just listening to the two side by side right now, they even removed the guitar solo (at a minute and thirty-nine seconds in the original mix) and replaced it with a slowed down piano section. That just seems utterly bizarre. I suppose you could say in this case Tomoya Ohtani was too good of a composer for his own good XD I'm sorry for leaving so many different comments, when I'm watching an hour-long video, especially when it's kind of a think-piece itself, I tend to do a lot of thinking of my own :)

I think another reason you get taken straight to classic gameplay is to emulate the Genesis/Mega Drive vibe as those games thrusted you right in

I recommend playing Sonic Unleashed on Xbox Series X. It’s still only 880x720p 30fps, but the frame rate never drops.
