I agree! This is fantastic.
You know in all the versions I've heard/seen, I've always seen the Monkey King born from a stone/mountain. But I never knew that he was ACTUALLY stone (for however long) at first. It really changes my perception of the beginning of the myth.
Your perception isn't that different from the most. The phrase "stone monkey" could very well just mean "monkey from the stone" rather than "monkey made of stone". The vagueness of Chinese adjectives could lead to several interpretations at once. I think the most common impression is that he was like any other monkey basically as soon as he came out of the stone/egg thingy.
Doing my research to have a better understanding of Black Myth Wukong. Having fun with the game, but I want to understand the true material. Thank for this!

Which author is this? Who translated it
The exact author of "Journey to the West" is in dispute, but we usually assume it's written by Ming Dynasty's Wu Cheng'en. Our team did our own translation of the novel from Chinese. For details, please refer to Production Notes Episode 1.
