  • In this video we take on a DIY project to make wooden challenge coins, finished with epoxy. We show you all the steps we take to make the coins. We used a combination of our xTool M1 and our ATEZR P20 Plus to accomplish this.

There actually is a lot involved with making small wooden coins when you coat them with epoxy. What a pain!! 🙂

Thank you for sharing your process! May I suggest for future projects...liquid latex or painters tape to keep epoxy from areas you don't want it on, and silicone mats. Also, once you've finished a side of your coin, you can put the liquid latex to keep epoxy off that side. Clean with Isopropyl alcohol and wash well in case recipients may have latex allergy 😊 Really enjoying your videos and looking forward to more 😁 Aloha

Thank you so very much for the great ideas! I actually used to use frog tape, which is the best painter's tape but I always pour at night and the epoxy is hardened and makes it difficult to remove the tape. (All my fault). I have never used liquid latex but that sounds very interesting. I need to see if it works on porous wood! Thank you so very much for watching the video and for your kind comments.

That was a lot of work, but the end result was amazing. Glad to see that Mrs. Poor Man is feeling better. Looking forward, as usual, to the next installment.

No more coins!!! LOL! But... we did like the final result. Mrs Poor Man is feeling better and just as expected... she passed it to me. LOL!

    They look great both.
One question, When you were using the DNA to clean the pieces did it smear the burn on the wood?
    Great video as ever.
    Take care both.
    Cheers, Huw

the DNA does change the look a little. I have seen people recommend different things. I have tried isopropyl alcohol as well. DNA does not have water and so my research reflects it evaporates better. other methods just spread the ash so DNA is the lesser of all evils for me. By the time I pour epoxy on it, it looks perfect.

@@Poor_Mans_DIY I use my compressor to blow any "soot" off before cleaning which I find helps.

@@WoodenItBeNice unfortunately, I do not have a compressor. I have tried different thing. With tiny pieces, I place them in a plastic cup and I shake it like a martini. much of the soot sticks to the side and I pour out the wooden parts. Clean out the cup and repeat a few times. I found a better way that works really well most of the time. I run test cut patterns to determine the lowest power and faster speed that cuts all the way through. These are clean cuts and there is very little soot.

So is THAT the only way to do the 3D wood coins with a M1?

I am sure there are other ways to do so, it is just how we prefer it because we are huge fans of working with wood and epoxy. If you come up with a different way, we would love to learn!
