It was picked up. I don't think there was ever a possibility that it wouldn't be. GLORIA aired for one full season, 22 episodes, right after Archie Bunker's Place, which was winding down and losing its quality and popularity. By very reliable reports at the time, with slipping ratings, Carroll O'Connor was no longer worth his rather high maintenance. When Archie Bunker's Place was cancelled, Gloria was too.

Before the onset of cable tv among other media choices competing networks tried to rest on the hit tv shows and it shows here. Gloria sans the rest of the All in the Family cast was weak and mundane .

She got herself blackballed because she didn’t want ANY “All in the Family” mentions on the show and that’s when Carroll O’Connor ditched her and the show. She never found good work again. She did it to herself.

I seem to recall something about him running off to join a commune. So the character we'd grown to love/hate over the course of All In The Family was turned into someone who deserted his wife and child (if I'm remembering correctly!)

@@tomflorio7363 another episode revealed she had cheated on him. He started out as a hippie but compromised for Archie and Gloria by marrying her. He even defended her and Archie in an early episode where his hippie friends came to visit... It made sense he'd ultimately run off to a commune after her cheating on him.

... _The Facts of Life_ is the only show I know of that actually had a mostly strong, 8-9 year run. 😬
