  • Hi guys!
    Many of you have been asking questions regarding the process of colouring, from start to finish! From how to pick out a page, to choosing colours, shading, creating a 3D effect and finishing off the page with embellishments. I have bene avoiding doing these videos for a while as I am self-taught and don’t think I have much theory behind what I do when it comes to colouring - I just colour and have fun doing it!
    But I thought it is about time I took on the challenge and atleast share with you all my process of colouring from start to finish!
    I really hope you guys find this video informative, interesting and helpful! I hope you enjoy watching this series!
    Happy colouring!

    I would highly encourage anyone starting out when it comes to dry media... buy one big set of pencils... the best you can afford or are willing to spend. More colors makes everything easier.. don't listen to professional artists who say you only need 12, yes you CAN do anything with the right 12 colors but it's so much easier to have a nice big selection of hues, tones, and shades ESPECIALLY if you are not a trained artist. I have never once said "I wish I didn't have so many colors to work with" when it comes to dry media. Learn that set. Know that set. Your hand, eye, and brain learn the colors and how the formula works with application and you will get better results easier with a product you know inside and out. If you really are not sure and want to try several of the more expensive brands buy a nice three or four color spectrum, light to dark, of a color you will use.. I like greens because I color a lot of plants. Maybe choose purple if you like flowers, or brown/grey if you like urban scenes or wildlife. It's so much more useful to really get a feel for how they color than a 12 set with random midtone colors and it's less expensive. You can save a ton of money buying a large set vs open stock.. or you can budget out open stock purchases a little at a time until you collect the set... but if you do the math most small sets don't save you much at all.. just lock you into random colors that are hard to use together. I'd rather spend the same amount or even a bit more buying 12 open stock colors that actually work together in spectrum and tone. Also remember you can mix any pencils together.. I know many colorists/artist who buy purely for color and mix tons of different brands together on a regular basis. It's way too easy to get caught up in collecting pencils vs coloring with them, it's something I struggle with constantly even though I know better.

      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree with all your points. I definitely like having a big set…I am not an artist and I would not know where to start with only a small set and having to combine colours to get the colour you want. I have been working with ADs only since 2015 and yes it helps to learn your set of pencils. And it is always a good idea to try open stock pencils if you can before going and buying the expensive sets 👍🏻 thanks for sharing 🤗💗

    • @nuivrae
      @nuivrae ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I can slightly disagree that it's better to start with a bigger set... You can easily get overwhelmed with lots of various shades that you have no idea of how to combine with each other... This happened to me with my 150 Prisma set. At some point I even wanted to limit myself to 12-24-36 etc. colors, just to learn better how they work together, because I really struggled with picking up colors from among all the variety of 150. If I had a chance to restart, I'd buy some medium set to start with, 36 or 72 would be ideal 😅

    • @raggedblossom508
      @raggedblossom508 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nuivrae I can relate to this so well. I've been colouring for five years, but still would feel overwhelmed with any new set larger than 120. With the Prismas, I started with a small set, then added in the rest of the colours a few at a time. I have all the available Black Widows because I love the way they lay down, but it will be quite a process to get to know all of them.

    • @shelscolouringjourney
      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nuivrae I can totally see what you mean. It can be very overwhelming when you are starting off to have too many colours. I guess it comes down to individual preference….I think for me with a small set I struggled with the limited shades and I didn’t have the colour theory knowledge of how to mix colours to get the shade you want if it is not available on your set…so I think I really benefitted from having many shades all available. But yes, for some people, having too much choice can be overwhelming and it may be better to get a smaller set to start with - to be fair I did start with a set of 36 which I had for 3 years before getting g a full set 😂

    • @MissTiffanyK1
      @MissTiffanyK1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree - I love having the 150 Prismas. I've enjoyed getting to know the combinations that work well for the look I want, and after almost a year with them I'm starting to experiment with small sets or open stock of other brands. I also find you tube videos helpful to learn color palettes for certain effects (metal, skin tones, etc)

    One of my biggest tips for beginners is to start with coloring books that have images that are easier to color. I started off with some Kerby Rosanes and Mythographic books, and a few other more advanced coloring books, and I really struggled! I think part of my problem was that I had seen so many videos of other people's pages and they did such a wonderful job, but I wasn't able to do nearly as good of a job as them and it really discouraged me and had me feeling down for a while. I still struggle with Mythographic Magical Earth but I am doing much better than when I first started! I already knew how to do shading and blending really well, and I was pretty good at knowing where shadows go when I first started because of some art classes, but I almost quit coloring altogether because I was so discouraged. I was so frustrated and upset with myself that I actually thought about giving away all of my books and supplies! But then I realized that I do love coloring, and I have $150 set of Prismacolor pencils, plus other sets of pencils and many other mediums and supplies, and I snapped out of it and was like, I can't just give 100's and 100's of dollars worth of my precious art supplies away!!! (I got tax return money and did a major coloring book and supplies haul before I even started coloring officially). Finally I had gotten a few books with images that were a lil easier to color, and that really helped. So my advice is, don't try to start at expert level like I did lol! The Nice Little Town books and Nice Little Dragons books are good ones to start out with, or even the Johanna Basford books. I think Johanna's books are good for all skill levels. And ALWAYS watch a flip through video before buying any coloring book, that way you know what kind of coloring pages are in it because some have these covers that draw you in, but when you get the book you realize that the images aren't really your style or what you enjoy coloring! Sorry this comment is so long, but I hope it helps at least one person to not make the same mistake that I did!

      It's very hard to look at the works posted on Instagram and such. It can be discouraging if you can't keep up or don't like yours as well. I enjoyed detailed pages (Mythographic, Kerby, etc) even in the beginning, but I had to distance myself from social media examples. "Comparison is the thief of joy," as they say. I'm glad you found a way through your frustration so you can have fun coloring again!

    • @silvers_ink
      @silvers_ink ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MissTiffanyK1 Thanks love! I definitely think distancing from social media examples is a very good idea! I have cut back on looking at other people's work, but I do still scroll through to get ideas when I'm having a hard time. I probably should distance myself a little more, but I keep scrolling anyway lol! I'm not sure if you've heard of the Mermaids in Paradise book, I believe it's by Denyse Klette, but there are a lot of pages in that book that have quite a bit of blank space in the backgrounds, so I scroll through instagram a lot looking for ideas for backgrounds. I'm not that great a drawing so I try to go with easier backgrounds lol!
      And I really appreciate your kind words and encouragement! I have found a lot of kindness and support in the coloring community, and it means a lot to me!

      Thank you, Nicole. This information is so needed for me. I am new to the adult coloring community. I already had all the pens, pencils, markers, paints, etc., for Bible Journaling.
      I used to use the 64 box of Crayola Crayon Colors and color books with big spaces. I still do that sometimes. It is really stress free.
      I went and bought all the coloring books I saw on TH-cam. 😂
      I don't have any other social media accounts. I bought a lot of books that you mentioned. I am so frustrated because it seems so hard to understand, the shading, blending, highlights, backgrounds, etc. And this is supposed to be fun.
      Today, I wanted to give up. Like you, I have spent several hundreds of dollars on this hobby. I found this video, and I found your comment. It has helped so much. I am not going to give up. I am going to start with my books that are less detailed. Thank you so much and God bless you.

      Yes, Albrecht Dürer pencils are watercolour pencils...so when I use them dry, I use them just like regular pencils without any water. I use them both with water and without 🤗💗

    Where did you get your color swatching charts

      I got them online, they are available for free. The signature on the bottom of the charts have the same Mystic Sparkle Wings - if you google that name, you should find the charts. Hope this helps 🤗💗

      Sorry, I no longer have the jewellery I made sadly....if I ever get back into it, I will surely share it! At the moment I use Chromatek which are not bad...however I love the pentel hybrid dual metallics in gold and silver - haven't tried the others yet. I do wish they had bigger sets in them though! 🤗💗

    I'm confused. What is a base? It sounds like you are talking about something different to the background. Thanks!

    • @shelscolouringjourney
      @shelscolouringjourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry if I wasn't clear. A base is a layer of colour you put down lightly before you do your more detailed work over the top - so you could put down a layer of markers, watercolour paints, soft pastels or even just pencil. And then you do your more detailed shading over the top. Hope this makes sense? 🤗💗
