I've said it before, going to say it again: you are so refreshing in this colouring world. Not aiming at having every art supply there is, but just being content with what you've got and learning how to use that.

I think this is a great video for people who are thinking about getting into coloring, or just getting into it, because I wasted a lot of money making purchases out of my ignorance! First I thought I'd save myself some money by buying the Castle Art soft touch pencils. They weren't the cheapest, but they were still budget friendly, so I thought that was the best choice......WRONG! LOL! I was so upset with my decision, but then a couple of weeks later my hubby handed me his debit card and said, get on Amazon and get the pencils that you really want! So I chose the 150 set of Prismas and I was so happy with that choice! I still can't live without my Prismas! They're just super easy to blend because the colors just smoosh together because they're so soft. I also had bought a bunch of coloring books and I hated every last one of them lol! I didn't enjoy the images in the books like I thought I would, and they are Amazon printed books so the paper is not good. It was when I had the Prismas and bought Johanna Basford's Rooms of Wonder and Worlds of Wonder that changed everything for me! So I definitely agree that the quality of the pencils and the paper makes a huge difference in how enjoyable your coloring experience will be. I also realized that I needed a white gel pen and I chose the Signo white gel pen that came in a pack of 3 that included gold and silver. Signo is still my favorite gel pens but I also enjoy using others as well. I definitely recommend that anyone who wants to make coloring their hobby should go ahead and splurge a little and get a good set of pencils, a few books with good paper, and at least a white gel pen. And watch coloring channels to learn more and more! Also, I never buy a book without watching a flip through video! Now I have the polychromos, which I also regret buying. I do enjoy using them, I just wish I had gotten the set of Albrecht Durer pencils instead. I'm sorry this comment is so long but I just wanted to warn others about mistakes that I have made! Thank you for sharing this video Shel! It will help anyone who is just starting out, and probably even some who have been coloring for a little while!

@@shelscolouringjourney Aw thank you so much! And yes I agree that quality pencils and books with quality paper makes coloring so much more enjoyable! I've actually heard other people say that they tried coloring as a hobby and didn't enjoy it so they quit, and then later discovered that the paper and pencils you use can make or break your enjoyment in the coloring experience! It makes me sad to hear about anyone giving up just because they aren't aware that the quality of the supplies you're using makes such a big difference! 🥰

Thanks for slowing down and taking the time to discuss your coloring. I feel a lot of videos are rushed so I really appreciate the slower pace and fleshed out opinions. I have settled on neocolors i and ii with water based markers for my coloring. I love pencils, but can't use them due to pain issues. But, like you said, sticking to one medium that is enjoyable to use (and in my case, painless) is very good advice. Over time, as you become an expert on that medium, you can achieve any results you want.

Hi Shelly! This video will be so helpful to new colourists. I agree that it helps a lot to have a set of artist quality pencils, although I must admit that I really like the Arrtx pencils! In answer to your query about Maria Trolle's Universum or Universe, the book contains new illustrations but also a selection of pages from Twilight Garden, Nightfall, Botanicum, Flora, Luna, Moon Valley and Vivi is looking for a Friend. I agree with you that her illustrations seem to be getting smaller as I was surprised by the size of the images in Universe in comparison to her older books.

My struggle with Rita Berman books was the patterns inside of objects. I just had no idea how to tackle that and I would just stare at the pages lol! I'm better at it now but I still struggle with books that have patterns inside of objects! And I agree about paper quality because I am able to color well in books that have good paper even with my budget friendly pencils! So I would say the paper quality is even more important than the quality of your pencils!

Listening to you in the background while I color...I'm going to argue with you about something I hear you say in your videos..."I'm not a artist"...An artist in my opinion has a sense of color, colors that work well with each other. The emotions the chosen color pallet create. So you didn't draw what you artistically colored so what ? I see all the beautiful pages you have done I'm telling you now YOU ARE A ARTIST! Great advice - I went through a similar process and came to mostly all the same conclusions. I will no longer buy any coloring books that don't have good paper. They're just not worth the time or expense, and it doesn't matter how pretty the images are, I know I won't enjoy coloring them on bad paper. I have the Paul Rubens metallic watercolors and I have to say I have been disappointed in them. I purchased them after watching and reading many reviews but I don't find them very vibrant or metallic looking. I much prefer the Coliro Mica paints. The gold and silver set is particularly pretty, and I find it's what I use most, even though I have another set with colors. I also use water soluble media as my base color most of the time and another thing I find very useful is using a colorless alcohol marker to blend out watercolor pencils and Neocolors. You don't get quite the same watercolor effect, but it is so useful on paper that doesn't take water well. I use a Copic (Sketch brush tip) that I can purchase refills for instead of having to buy a new marker when it runs out. You can also use a Tombow blender but I have found even that damages paper sometimes. Also, I can't do without my electric eraser, my little Mono Zero eraser, and my Holbein Soft White pencil for highlights.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You are so right, I forgot about an eraser to be honest. I guess I don't use them on every page, so it slipped my mind. And thank you so much for sharing with me your experience with the Paul reubens glitter paints.....I have really enjoyed their normal paints so much I thought the glitter paints would be good. I think I was attracted to the fact that they had such a large set with lots of colours. I do have the coliro's on my Wishlist too, so maybe I will have to try them out lol 🤗💗

Thank you again and your coloring is absolutely beautiful! I use my polys and the AD together, I have Prismacolors as well, I even mix them. lovely video. I have struggled with a set of coloring pencils propelling me into the serial pencil set buying in the hopes of finding the one. the other is paper quality (or lack thereof) which makes any good pencil misbehave! However, finding stores near me where I can feel the paper before buying is non-existent. And since there isn't a label on books- it's been hit or miss. Great video, thanks. As a total beginner with one main set of pencils (Castle Art), I never did backgrounds for now. I have a small set of Faber Castell Goldfaber Aqua pencils, and some oil pastels from previous experiments. I find I'm never able to properly blend oil pastels. I see all these videos of people blending them with a piece of tissue paper, and when I try it just doesn't work. The color comes off the paper too much or doesn't blend at all. Should I just stick to the watercolor pencils? Or do you happen do have happen to know some good method do blend oil pastels?

You are most welcome! I am so sorry, but I have never used oil pastels myself - only ever used Neocolor II which are waterbased, so I blend it all with water and a brush. If I am not mistaken, Colouring with K uses oil pastels and is likely to have a video on blending oil pastels if you want to check it out. I find soft pastels really easy to use. I wouldn't say only stick to your watercolour pencils if you want to have a variety of different looks to your backgrounds 🤗💗

Veryinterested to see that the items you mention are exactly what I started with. Except I had Polychromos, not the ABs.😊

Lol! Yes, most people would not have had the ADs as their first set of pencils 😂💗

I use Polychromos and sometimes put inktense under it. I want to try the Albrecht duerer SO bad 😅 but i don't want to end up with a set that never gets used, so I have been reluctant. I would feel so bad if I liked the watercolors and my Polychromos sat there unused lol

They work great together so no problem there 😊

Lol I know what you mean.....but they will work great together too! But if you have the Inktense then maybe you wouldn't need the ADs....but then I guess it is need against want right?! haha....they are beautiful pencils and I am sure you would use them wonderfully along with your polychromos! 🤗💗

The same happened to me, went to WHS smith and chose the same pencils, a disgrace 😂, those pencils should be banned from the planet
