You make some great points. I've lived in the countryside my whole life, so I've rocked many a Carhartt jacket, overalls, etc. It's a bit odd to see them out of their usual context, but they are indeed cozy so I can't really begrudge anyone wearing them!
this comment got me excited to watch this video, haha sitting with a knitting project rn (what are yall making? I'm on the sadie top - woozey by celine )
I totally agree, what I do think is that if something makes sense it will never feel incredibly trendy or dated once that trend passes. I for example live in a place where winter is pretty cold and above all incredibly windy, bonnets are something that just make so much sense here, because something like a bucket hat or a scarf thrown over yourself would just fly away. The same thing goes for a black puffer jacket. But I do agree that in other places they will eventually go back to being just something that makes no sense to wear once the trend passes and eventually just go to rot in your closet.
Tbh, I'd love another (longer 🥺) video like this. I had forgotten some of these trends but this video really put the new ones into perspective! Thank you so much ❤️
I have two routes when it comes to specific items: I wear what I like (I've always worn ballet flats and all kinds of Converse even when they were loathed) or going for a not so obvious choice. I got an Adidas for the first time ever this month (I wanted a casual ''fluffy'' sneaker, mine are all barebones designs and hard af), but the three lines are so understated it doesn't even look like Adidas. It's also pale pink - I don't do white shoes and pink is a staple in my wardrobe. Or people could just engage and keep wearing it when it's not ''cool'' anymore, the most important thing is not being wasteful!
the adidas shoes are really cute and there’ll be a time when less people wear them but it won’t mean they’re ugly my staple shoes are loafer doc martens and maryjane’s i don’t care if they’re on trend or not like she mentioned dunks and air force shoes which people are still wearing and i don’t really bat an eye when they do
i watch a lot of fashion related videos but ive kind of gotten bored of watching videos abt trends or deinfluencing bc the points get very repetitive - but i have to say this vid actually helped me see trends and deinfluencing in a different way!! u are so interesting to listen to ! id love to hear u talk more about what patterns you can notice in trends of different eras (if u have more to say)
The adidas Nike thing is so true, for me I’m so glad I waited to get my sambas only this summer, pretty certain I’ll always be into them since I waited and still wanted them hehe
i agree with most of what you said but i truly believe in personal style. I have owned leopard print, still wear vans sometimes and a fuzzy bucket hat but i’ve like adapted it to my style i the first place (leopard berets are my go to, short black fuzzy bucket hats 1930s style are a staple for me). I’d say : if you’re going to buy a trend, own it and make it fit your own style. don’t hop on a trend to fit it, just buy it if it actually suits your style !
I didn't know a lot of these were out of trend! I personally see a lot of these items (like the pufferjacket and scarf) everyday, and i honestly love a lot of them lol (the big scarfs are so pretty and practical, they're so worth it imo)
none of these rly hit for me except when you brought out the vans... even when i see people wearing them today I just cannot disconnect them from the tumblr grunge filter pics aesthetic
so so glad this video came out:) i got my north face jacket 6 years ago and bc it’s so so cold where i live it’s still going strong in the winter i absolutely agree with Ash just here to say its nice when something u wore becomes trendy and then out of trend and u still wear it in ur particular style it shows character hehe⭐️🪲
THIS IS EXACTLY THE SENTIMENT OF THE VIDEO thank you so much for saying this, what i was trying to get across is ,, don’t get rid of your old stuff and replace them with new trendy things bc they all turn out the same in the end. As long as you buy what you like it’ll never get old to you, fashion comes and goes style is forever xxxxx
cheetah print will always be a counter cultural print, as it will always be associated to urban tribes minorities as punks, hiphop culture etc. But as it happened with sambas and many more pieces and fashion statements, it got capitalised and lost its essence. For me sambas and cheetah print will always be part of my wardrobe :)
I work retail and many people (especially newcomers to the country) go crazzyyyy over Northface jackets. That trend is still very much alive aha At least here in Canada (Also very shocked by the way you pronounced Adidas👀)
i don't follow trends nor fast fashion, like i literally sew my own clothes when i need something new that i can't easily thrift - but i would argue that shoe trends are a bit different because shoes DO get worn out to a degree where it can hurt your feet if you wear them past a certain point. so, if a new show is fashionable in a few years (as long as you are not buying new shoes every month and just discarding them because of trends), buying 1-2 pairs of sneakers/everyday/athletic shoes a year is fine. because people who are wearing them frequently will just naturally wear them out. of course some shoes will be a "sign of the times" later but that shouldn't be a necessarily negative thing... usually on-trend shoes have more color/size options anyway
i think really unusual looking shoes like those foam yeezy’s will 100% be out of style if they aren’t already and dated(i think they’re so ugly lol) but adidas shoes have literally been around since 1949 they are not going away anytime soon. people might wear sambas less but i don’t see them being super dated plus like you said they wear out in a few years anyway (thank you purposeful object obsolescence) plus i think compared to other branded items their brand being the two lines is pretty inconspicuous which might help it with it’s longevity
Thanks to the deinfluencing, I’d like to see more of this ❤️✨👍 I have a black cashmere buckethat that I looked at for years, finally got it but then I just thought of past trends when wearing it and I realized I’m not gonna use it anyhow
I disagree with your point about leopard print because it’s a timeless clothing pattern that has trended throughout history for countless centuries, unlike checkerboard print.
I need to defend memy beloved balaclava here. I started wearing the scarf around the head when studying in st Petersburg, Russia, but I wanted something less bulky and easier to shove into a bag. Enters the balaclava... Mine is hot pink, but you can get it in so many colours! I believe it was J crew that made a heart-shaped version. It's a scarf, a beanie and a ear warmer all combined So perfect
personally i think leapord print is timeless; it never gets old to me and every time it resurfaces i liiive for it and still live for it when it's not "trendy"
im pretty sure my dad owns a carhartt jacket and i thought i looked cool. i had no idea it was a trend 😭 ( when my dad wears it he looks like a resident evil character tho.)
I don’t know how things are in different parts of the world, but in the US at least, chunky scarves actually appear to be making quite the comeback this winter! Personally, I love them🧣
I love that this video gives us tips for how to talk ourselves out of hopping on trends. Like I feel that it's so easy to adapt this mentality for my everyday life. Thank you!
the fact that the north face coat was so trendy makes me sad because it was legitimately so warm and i loved wearing that thing through the winter! thankfully i never actually bought it and just “borrowed” it from a family member lol
I still wear my Nike, Converse, New Balance, and vintage coach sneakers because they are my favorite style of shoes. I want pumas and Adidas . Like the video, it is true. Take care Ash ❤
A lot of the things you were reminding us about still seem stylish/fun to me.. I still like myself an oversized comfy scarf (not the ones in the pic though, I hate polyester), I still wear checkered stuff, I bought "trendy" ugly dad shoes, Asics in my case, and have been wearing them for almost three years now, I knit a hood/bonnet last year and I adore it.. I think some of the trends are fun, because they give me a chance to see something and learn that it exists. And thankfully I have enough self-awareness to tell if I actually like it and will like for a while or if it's just a passing trend. Overconsumption kills style, taste and the planet.
Oh.. I am getting that old???! When you said puma speedcat I was like wait those are back???!! I had those when I was a kid in pastel pink and I totally rock them I miss them🥲🥹
Exactly i used to have them back in 2002 very famous around house parties back in the day and the adidas trend its been a trend since the 80's at least for adidas fans like myself
I knitted a balaclava for myself in a very deep plum red (im a true fall), it's made out of wool and can be worn as a hoodie. It's neither super tight nor loose... here functionality really overpowered the trend factor 🥰
This was so needed, please keep doing these so I can save money 😅 Also a huge pet peeve of mine is when people call a trending item a “classic”, it rarely is…
thank you so much for this video. this is from someone who lives in a country where its so hard to find these trendy clothes easily and even when i do buy them i just end up throwing away a lot of my trendy clothes because i end up hating them slowly.this helps 🤭
I think the biggest problem is calling everything a trend and predicting what will happen to this "trend". Because of that everyone is constantly searching for new "trends" because they don't want to become basic. Honestly what can I still wear if literally EVERYTHING becomes a trend as soon as 10 people start wearing the same thing 😭
Yes like bonnets being a «trend»? … They are functional, bucket hats are not and never were, why do I need to put a scarf on my head if I want to put a bonnet that looks good on me, why does everything people come up with need to be called a «trend», my ears start to hurt if they are even a little open to the cold wind
@@jfjdjdeyieidright! and even if you want to wear a bucket hat just do it because before people called it a „trend“ they were already existing and it had nothing to do with a trend.
Love the idea of the video!! The only criticism I have is that to me leopard print is actually timeless. It has been in and out of fashion every 5 years, but it never goes away
I had been looking at a bonnet hat since my college years (about 8 years ago) but wasn’t popular so was harder for me to find but I am glad to finally support an Etsy knit seller and get one but I knew I’d like it as I have been scouring the internet for years. I also live in cold Minnesota so I will wear it (and my giant scarves). It’s more about comfort and necessity to me than aesthetic, especially in winter.
Well in Serbia scarves weared like a bonnet won't be trendy for a long time because we are associating that with grandmas (my great grandmother wore it in her village and I'm one of many who have a similar background)
Oh my, those Puma Speedcats! They were my first ever online buy - 20 fricking years ago! Back when they were trending for the first time. Honestly contemplated for a while buying the exact same pair again (had them in burgundy back then - of course 🥲), but oh well... Anyways, I still think they are a fantastic shoe. I also feel like VANS are just a staple at this point, not trending at all, but also still worn by many of us millenials, who just appreciate them for what they are: an inoffensive and comfortable shoe. 😅
Lol I love watching fashion videos because it keeps me up with whatever is going on on the internet that I missed and sometimes I get to disagree 😅like for the scarves and the dunks (at least in my high school) literally everyone is still wearing them and I see every day at school a mix of the past 3 decades ´s worth of fashion trends ! And it’s funny because in middle school, we were ALL wearing the exact same things but in high school, everyone is in the character development phase I guess and I see a lot more mix and matching between the trends from today and what used to be popular before that we still have in our closets ! Also no one wears coats now. Me too. I just accepted that I’m always too hot to wear one if it’s not winter yet😔also I love the way you notice the parallels in fashion it’s really interesting
Ah love this comment so much !! I had to wear uniform from starting school until i finished high school so never really knew what other people wore, it meant that i kind of developed a style without outside influence and i think it’s why i believe i have quite a strong sense of personal style, i know what I like and i know what I don’t like no matter who is wearing it :))))
Thx for this video ! Refreshing to see this kind of content. Thought i can hardly agree on the leopard print, this seems more like a timeless print compared to the 2020 tiles. Leopard print was more or less in trend since the 80’s 😽
I do remember the Nike shoe craze and I remember not liking the silhouette back then which is why I never participated, so now I actually feel better for participating in the adidas trend because it feels like a decision that’s in line with my general taste
Yeah, it was like you had to have nikes because they were the it brand. I never liked those big chunky nike sneakers either and always felt like the style of the brand generally isn’t for me. Adidas and also reebok have always appealed to me. It’s really best to stick to what you like.
I feel like some of the things that are trending have been part of an alternative style for a very long time. For example the construction jackets, checkered patterns, docs. But of course people on microtrends just look to hop on from one thing to the next. Im personally just waiting for the things I like to stop being in the limelight lol
in my eyes the acne scarf's equivalent today (at least where i am in Copenhagen) is the sophie scarf. the knit little triangle scarf everyone wears.... it's EVERYWHERE! (or, perhaps the thin black and white stripe scarves a lot of people wear as well...)
i was also planning on getting a bonnet hat but just because its extremely nice in cold weather... if its long enough to cover almost your whole neck its a really cool mixture of a scarf and a hat. The only unfortunate thing ist that many of those are not really long enough to cover your neck properly. So in the end it feels like this is so close to an actually good und useful trend but it missed it anyway.
I agree with everything other than the leaopard print. It has been here for so long, and is prominent in so many styles and subcultures i dont think we should categorise it into just a current trend that will be a fad is some time
hmmmm north face jackets will always be around in places that have winter :/ but yes i do think you’re right in the sense that overwearing practical clothes as a style trend during occasions where they may not be the most practically appropriate does make us like our things just a little bit less
I feel like vans have never gone out of style, but that's probably because I live in Southern California where there are a lot of surfers/skaters. So I think trends also depend on the climate you live in an the culture that surrounds it.
as someone who follows internet fashion not at all and therefore knows basically nothing about these trends, these videos are so fun, its like when your friend who goes to a different school starts spilling all the drama there to you. I dont go here, but im entertained

I've lived in the countryside my whole life, so I've rocked many a Carhartt jacket, overalls, etc. It's a bit odd to see them out of their usual context, but they are indeed cozy so I can't really begrudge anyone wearing them!
Love these deinfluencing videos, such a cool concept and a great way to use your platform to encourage slower consumption. :) Props to u Ash!
I got u hehehe xxxxxx
It’s almost like you know I’m winding yarn right now and needed something to watch
I got u girl xxxx
this comment got me excited to watch this video, haha sitting with a knitting project rn (what are yall making? I'm on the sadie top - woozey by celine )
@@charmayd omg saaaame 🤭
Same!
Love every point made in this thank you so much xxxx
the adidas shoes are really cute and there’ll be a time when less people wear them but it won’t mean they’re ugly
my staple shoes are loafer doc martens and maryjane’s i don’t care if they’re on trend or not
like she mentioned dunks and air force shoes which people are still wearing and i don’t really bat an eye when they do
i have light pink adidas gazelles myself which i love :)
@@izzybobizzyy YES MARY JANES !!!
i watch a lot of fashion related videos but ive kind of gotten bored of watching videos abt trends or deinfluencing bc the points get very repetitive - but i have to say this vid actually helped me see trends and deinfluencing in a different way!! u are so interesting to listen to ! id love to hear u talk more about what patterns you can notice in trends of different eras (if u have more to say)
Ah i love u so much thank you !! Pls id love to do more vids like this def !!
I never thought of this! An interesting point thank you for highlighting it !!:)
I fucking love Vans and will never get over them
Tell em !!
I work retail and many people (especially newcomers to the country) go crazzyyyy over Northface jackets. That trend is still very much alive aha
At least here in Canada
(Also very shocked by the way you pronounced Adidas👀)
random i LOVE the pace you talk at, i always get bored listening to slow talking youtubers 😅. and your vibes are immaculate
You’re making me blush pls i love you for this xxxxxxxx
i don't follow trends nor fast fashion, like i literally sew my own clothes when i need something new that i can't easily thrift - but i would argue that shoe trends are a bit different because shoes DO get worn out to a degree where it can hurt your feet if you wear them past a certain point. so, if a new show is fashionable in a few years (as long as you are not buying new shoes every month and just discarding them because of trends), buying 1-2 pairs of sneakers/everyday/athletic shoes a year is fine. because people who are wearing them frequently will just naturally wear them out. of course some shoes will be a "sign of the times" later but that shouldn't be a necessarily negative thing... usually on-trend shoes have more color/size options anyway
i think really unusual looking shoes like those foam yeezy’s will 100% be out of style if they aren’t already and dated(i think they’re so ugly lol)
but adidas shoes have literally been around since 1949 they are not going away anytime soon. people might wear sambas less but i don’t see them being super dated plus like you said they wear out in a few years anyway (thank you purposeful object obsolescence)
plus i think compared to other branded items their brand being the two lines is pretty inconspicuous which might help it with it’s longevity
i gotta say vans have always been in style/trend in california, theyre still everywhere here 🖤
As someone from Colorado, Northface jackets have always been and will always be in style
It's a scarf, a beanie and a ear warmer all combined
So perfect
Pls a heart shaped balaclava sounds genius oh my . I do like a hand knitted balaclava bc it holds sentiment :))
personally i think leapord print is timeless; it never gets old to me and every time it resurfaces i liiive for it and still live for it when it's not "trendy"
This is a genius video format. Please do regularly 🙏🏼💘
going to have to think of more just for you
im pretty sure my dad owns a carhartt jacket and i thought i looked cool. i had no idea it was a trend 😭 ( when my dad wears it he looks like a resident evil character tho.)
Pls he’s an icon xxxxx
I don’t know how things are in different parts of the world, but in the US at least, chunky scarves actually appear to be making quite the comeback this winter! Personally, I love them🧣
I love that this video gives us tips for how to talk ourselves out of hopping on trends. Like I feel that it's so easy to adapt this mentality for my everyday life. Thank you!
the fact that the north face coat was so trendy makes me sad because it was legitimately so warm and i loved wearing that thing through the winter! thankfully i never actually bought it and just “borrowed” it from a family member lol
Proud vans user till this day, I use my pair almost everyday
i think u just convinced me to buy a carhart jacket😂😂 i love my northface and still wear it like everyday
hahahahahah at least you know what you like !!xxxx
This works! I actually think you could also say .. don’t buy that.. just wear this instead (a classic version)
oh my def, pls going on my list for vid ideas xxxxxx
I love the way she talks 😭😭😭💓
this is such a good concept for a deinfluencing style video
I still wear my Nike, Converse, New Balance, and vintage coach sneakers because they are my favorite style of shoes.
I want pumas and Adidas . Like the video, it is true. Take care Ash ❤
still wear my reeboks and new balance 574 bc they are my favourites :) so handy to know what you like :) have a blessed day xxxx
Overconsumption kills style, taste and the planet.
i've never heard of the oversized scarf trend but i live in a snowy town and my mom gave me one last year that i absolutely love
LOVE this concept omg
Oh.. I am getting that old???! When you said puma speedcat I was like wait those are back???!! I had those when I was a kid in pastel pink and I totally rock them I miss them🥲🥹
What goes around comes around or smth like that hahaha;)
Exactly i used to have them back in 2002 very famous around house parties back in the day and the adidas trend its been a trend since the 80's at least for adidas fans like myself
If harry and Hermione had a daughter:
(Pls don’t take this as hate I LOVE IT!! the outfit, the ACCENT ugh I want to be you)
SHE’S BACK!!
Like she never left B)
I knitted a balaclava for myself in a very deep plum red (im a true fall), it's made out of wool and can be worn as a hoodie. It's neither super tight nor loose... here functionality really overpowered the trend factor 🥰
The way you say Nike and Adidas fascinates me
Crochet bucket hat? Hmm, I don't know. Furry bucket hat? YES I WILL LOVE THEM FOREVER.
Hahahaha love that for u sm , i love a boonie :))
This was so needed, please keep doing these so I can save money 😅 Also a huge pet peeve of mine is when people call a trending item a “classic”, it rarely is…
thank you so much for this video. this is from someone who lives in a country where its so hard to find these trendy clothes easily and even when i do buy them i just end up throwing away a lot of my trendy clothes because i end up hating them slowly.this helps 🤭
such a pleasure ! have the best day xxx
precursor to the bonnet and bucket hat is the snood and i must say i love a good snood, i still have my hot pink one from like 8 years ago😌
I REMEMBER SNOODS hahahah
Im drooling over ur sweater rn im obsessed w tht color
Ah u r a gem thank you so much :’)
it’s so fun being in your favourite youtuber‘s video even as just a little comment
couldn't have done it without you xxxxxxxxxxx
so many old trends i still adore like the acne studios scarf but things like the leapord print being put into everything make me want to puke
Still wearing the chunky scarf, mainly because I get cold lol. Also, it makes for a nice blanket when it's cold inside!
a tartan blanket on the sofa w tv on yes pls xxxxx
Is it weird that without clicking on any of your vids I somehow already knew you’d have a British accent
It’s more about comfort and necessity to me than aesthetic, especially in winter.
practicality ALWAYS trumps fashionability for me xxxx
Well in Serbia scarves weared like a bonnet won't be trendy for a long time because we are associating that with grandmas (my great grandmother wore it in her village and I'm one of many who have a similar background)
the original babushka
@@ashleighcallaghan haha yes, we just say baba btw, shortened from Russian :D
Oh my, those Puma Speedcats! They were my first ever online buy - 20 fricking years ago! Back when they were trending for the first time. Honestly contemplated for a while buying the exact same pair again (had them in burgundy back then - of course 🥲), but oh well... Anyways, I still think they are a fantastic shoe. I also feel like VANS are just a staple at this point, not trending at all, but also still worn by many of us millenials, who just appreciate them for what they are: an inoffensive and comfortable shoe. 😅
If i could describe vans as anything it would be inoffensive and comfortable hahahaahahxxxx
I had to wear uniform from starting school until i finished high school so never really knew what other people wore, it meant that i kind of developed a style without outside influence and i think it’s why i believe i have quite a strong sense of personal style, i know what I like and i know what I don’t like no matter who is wearing it :))))
currently missing class to watch u. absolutely love it.
I’m the best teacher anyway 💅
bonnets are already out, but tgey are very helpfull for really cold or windy weather, so I am glad it is on market still
same with sacrves - when it is a functuonal neccesity, trendieness doesn't matter
Thanks for the deinfluenceing, I needed it
My pleasure xxxxxx
Thx for this video ! Refreshing to see this kind of content. Thought i can hardly agree on the leopard print, this seems more like a timeless print compared to the 2020 tiles. Leopard print was more or less in trend since the 80’s 😽
I do remember the Nike shoe craze and I remember not liking the silhouette back then which is why I never participated, so now I actually feel better for participating in the adidas trend because it feels like a decision that’s in line with my general taste
The importance of knowing what you like 💘💘
Yeah, it was like you had to have nikes because they were the it brand. I never liked those big chunky nike sneakers either and always felt like the style of the brand generally isn’t for me. Adidas and also reebok have always appealed to me. It’s really best to stick to what you like.
this was so exceptionally healing
one of the best things I've seen recently
You have made my day, thank you so much xxxxx
I love this video ❤ it's perfect and I fully understood it 👌🏼
“just wear your scarfs over your head” such wisdom. I like to wear a cashmere hoodie under my coat or jacket
Simple is always most effective :))))
I feel like some of the things that are trending have been part of an alternative style for a very long time. For example the construction jackets, checkered patterns, docs. But of course people on microtrends just look to hop on from one thing to the next. Im personally just waiting for the things I like to stop being in the limelight lol
i kept expecting u to drop the accent any second lol,, i think it’s the glasses that make it unconvincing
this girl is like a female harry potter and I'm lowkey crushin
wow this was actually so insightful thank you for this!
this video taught me that many of the things i like are cringy and no longer trendy 😭😭😭
I love the concept of this video! So so cool and well done :)
thank you so much im so glad you liked it xxxx
in my eyes the acne scarf's equivalent today (at least where i am in Copenhagen) is the sophie scarf. the knit little triangle scarf everyone wears.... it's EVERYWHERE! (or, perhaps the thin black and white stripe scarves a lot of people wear as well...)
The t shirt material stripy scarfs are going to be old so quick i bet
This is such a great format
i was also planning on getting a bonnet hat but just because its extremely nice in cold weather... if its long enough to cover almost your whole neck its a really cool mixture of a scarf and a hat. The only unfortunate thing ist that many of those are not really long enough to cover your neck properly. So in the end it feels like this is so close to an actually good und useful trend but it missed it anyway.
I agree with everything other than the leaopard print. It has been here for so long, and is prominent in so many styles and subcultures i dont think we should categorise it into just a current trend that will be a fad is some time
i loved this !! and i love you !!!
Thank you for talking me out of the carhartt jacket i owe you my monthly salary 😭 i was desperate
Pleasure is all mine xxx
This is such a genius idea! Next time I feel like buying anything I am going to practice this!!
so glad :))))) have the best day xxx
hmmmm north face jackets will always be around in places that have winter :/ but yes i do think you’re right in the sense that overwearing practical clothes as a style trend during occasions where they may not be the most practically appropriate does make us like our things just a little bit less
this is such a good video! some 'timeless' alternatives might be nice
thank you !! this is a good idea lemme write that down heheh xxx
I feel like vans have never gone out of style, but that's probably because I live in Southern California where there are a lot of surfers/skaters. So I think trends also depend on the climate you live in an the culture that surrounds it.
