    I think the biggest travesty of vampire media is that this cast/writer/directer wasn't used to make an equally perfect "The Vampire Lestat"

      Damn, I agree. But only if Neil Jordan returned to direct, starring Tom Cruise in his unbelievably great portrayal. Huge missed opportunity. The Vampire Lestat is in many ways just as amazing as Interview. What a great book

      I totally agree…I was hugely disappointed by the film version of queen of the damned. I feel that if “Interview”, had of been filmed 5-6 years later in the later 90s, it would have caught on more and led to sequels….but at the same time without the film we may not have gotten the resurgence of vampire pop culture we did that would have made the late 90s the perfect time for the sequel and probably wouldn’t have gotten the cast that made the film such a masterpiece. Perhaps the fact that we never got good sequels makes the film the perfect allegory for Vampires themselves. Perfect yet incomplete and fundamentally flawed at the same time.

      They tried but a lot of the cast and crew either wasn't interested or unavailable. If we got an adaption of TVL in the late 90's, it would have come out amid the Buffy craze. Alas. There's a universe out there where we got Tom Cruise in the Vampire Lestat instead of Mission: Impossible

  • @nyxshadowhawk
    @nyxshadowhawk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +93

    Tom Cruise honestly nailed it as Lestat. I would not have expected it to work, but it did. Apparently, Cruise was the only person who actually read The Vampire Chronicles-- the director was too lazy, and Brad Pitt got bored after a chapter.
    Lestat is one of my all-time favorite literary characters. Only a "short step" from Lestat to Edward Cullen? How DARE you!

      It's correct though that homosexuality was part of Carmilla (1872), which made it part of the genre quite a while before Dracula was even written.
      Seeing that Carmilla is kinda one of the most influential genre codifiers of the modern Vampire, I'd say it's not unusual for others to use this aspect.

    I think the part that so much popular culture these days ignores or doesn't understand (depending on the property) is something that the Vampire Chronicles gets right (at least for the first two books.) is that they are monsters sexy, but unappealing for the fact that they must feed on what they once were, it's just sugar coated cannibalism. That's why the characters come to a crossroads where they either loath themselves for their appetite or loath humanity and see that it deserves to be devoured.

      Opinion piece on vampires: They *have* to drink blood, without easy get-out-of-bloodsucking-free cards. Think about all the potential you squander when you have the vampire just drink from blood bags or drain animals. It's not a vampire if you don't grapple with the questions of morality that arise from this and/or make it a ravening, unthinking monster, it's a superhero with fangs.

    Honestly, I can't empathise with Christian Slater's point of view at the end. I enjoyed this movie, but it makes being a vampire seem like an eternity of boredom, broken up by occasional bouts of misery. No matter how much you like killing people, eventually the thrill will fade, no matter how much you like your companions and loved ones, eventually you'll tire of them. Why do vampires in these movies never use their immortality to actually accomplish something meaningful? It seems like the only reason they don't kill themselves is that they can only die in incredibly painful ways.

      This is why the movie is so great and so sad. Because Louis is desperately trying to understand what he’s supposed to do as a monster and in his search for answers all he finds is depravity and nihilist sophistry. This is the fate of the vampire. To be a vampire is to be so afraid or resentful of mortality that you trade your humanity to cheat death. You become a vile creature that must destroy people in order to survive and you drag others into your misery to justify that craven existence to yourself. Also at one point in the movie they do say that the suicide rate for vampires is high (I believe Armand mentions it).

    Yeah, Lestat and Louis aren't really a couple in Interview with a Vampire. But the book heavily implies that nearly all of these blood sucking fiends are bisexual and fancy the ever loving crap out of each other.
    Lestat has loved men and women but usually went with men in his early years. The women he did love were Akasha and Rowen.
    Louis I don't think has had any romantic attachments to women in the Chronicles (The film doesn't count because they gave him a wife. A wife that never existed in the book, where his brother was the one who died). So Lestat and Armand are his only real experiences of romantic love.
    Armand and his maker loved the same woman, but it also implied that he was in love with his maker too.... causing a very strange three way relationship. Plus he slept with an English Lord to make his maker angry.
    Anne Rice was very big on bisexualism in her books. No matter how much Mr Cruise may have wanted it gone from the film, there were always going to be undertones.

    • @Wurzelknecht
      @Wurzelknecht 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      About Louis and women: Louis was madly in love with Claudia. That wasn't a father/daughter-relationship they had. That ended when Claudia's mind became that of an adult. Also he later fell in love with Merrick Mayfair, but this sadly ended in tragedy.
      But yeah in the Anne Rice universe, any major character, wether vampire or human, is usually displayed as bisexual.

      "The Vampire Lestat" states outright that Lestat fell head-over-heels for Louis, but yeah, Louis hated him too much for them to be called a couple. (And Lestat falls in love at the drop of a hat.)

    Simply amazing review and analysis. However, the biggest difference between Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie and tv show wasn't the sexy vampires but that Joss Whedon had control of the latter and not the former. Part of the better writing on the tv show was Buffy's friendships and her deeper relationship with her Watcher, which were at least as important as the romantic elements.

      +Samara Smarts To be fair, Lestat does not get redeemed. Like at all. He mellows yes, but redemption not so much. And if we're being honest the mellowing is only because he becomes too powerful and life is too boring because of his massive power for the same sort of antics to still be fun. It would be like turning The Joker into Superman, sure he could do the things he used to, but they're boring now and the power makes everything else too easy in his opinion.

    It's strange though, in the book I read Armand was never described with strawberry blonde or reddish hair.It was long and dark, dyed In Fact, like all the other vampires in Theatre De Vampires. So I never understood why this was considered a movie fail. (Also Antonio Bandares can do no wrong.) also, after reading the book I found I was very disappointed in the film as a whole. So many cool scenes were cut out entirely, especially with the interactions of Claudia and Armand. The scene in the belfry where Armand warns lui that the vampires want to destroy Claudia, and Claudia's paranoia that Armand too, wanted her dead were such well written points in the book.

    • @m4gnusroot

      Jem Fukuyama Armand was considered a movie fail because he was described in the book as very youthful, almost looking like an adolescent, with long curly auburn/reddish hair. And I believe he was some sort of Eastern European/Slavic ethnicity (Russian maybe?) in the book. Antonio Banderas did a good job playing the role of Armand, but looked nothing like how he was pictured in the book.

    Seeing how brutal, ruthless and manipulative Bill Compton is, I wouldn't say that he is illegible boyfriend, I wouldn't count the last seasons, because the series was tainted by the fact that Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer become producers of the shows when they were FREAKING MARRIED WITH EACH OTHER, and interfering with the creative team.

      Its both. Basically book and Flim when comes to vampires can be sum as Romantically Bi and Sexuality Ace. Meaning vampires in this universe can't have sex but can still have romantic feelings but it's done in way where it's ambiguous. Like the scene between Armand and Louis in the movie where Louis tells Armand no I want go with you because you help kill my kid. Louis has face VERY close to Armand to point were you are sitting there going" JUST KISS ALREADY" but nope doesn't happen.

    I would totally like to see a book review of IWTV, especially now, that the show is out. Go backt to the source material and have a good look at it. Not in order to compare, but to dig deeper into the themes of the original story. Thanks.

    Everytime I see the Whore scene, I have to remind myself that it's okay that the great Helen McCrory dies in the first 3 seconds, because she has an utterly sumptuous and vivid career waiting for her after this. God...I think she would've made a fabulous Gabrielle.

    "Van Helsing doesn't count" Hahaha But yeah IWTV is definitely up there with the best IMO. Although my vote goes to Near Dark. Tragically underrated and overshadowed by Lost Boys (although I do love that movie too).

    thank you for sighing every time you referred to anything 'TWILIGHT'. i saw about 5 minutes of it just to see what all the hype was about until i found exactly what i knew i would. a vampire flick designed (like so much of modern media) to appeal to teenage girls.
    i think, though, the switchover from portraying vampires as hot and sexy rather than filthy and scary (ie. nosferatu, certain vamps in 'blade' or mr. barlow) happened long before 'interview with a vampire'. 'interview' simply took cute A list actors and once and for all cemented the image in the public's mind which then made it that much easier to translate it into something widely appealing to people who watch 'keeping up with the kardashians'.
    i liked the movie it was better than i expected but even then i couldn't help but notice the male vampires were all dashing 90's A list actors and that it would probably only get worse from there.

    Just for the sake of clarity to all those in this comment section who are insinuating it: vampires in Ann Rice’s novels do not have sex, nor are they even interested in it. Rice confirmed that any reference to “love” between vampires did not refer to actual sex. Vampires essentially become bisexual eunuchs in the novels-they really arnt wired for it after they become vampires

    Dracula, Count Ruthven and many other vampires sired the vampire chronicles.
    The movie Queen Of The Damned gave birth to the hybrid baby Twilight.
    Louis counciled the Cullens with vegetarianism. He has long talks with Carlisle about God. Edward reminds him too much of his mopey self.
    Van Helsing senseied Buffy and Anita Blake.
    Other than that. Lestat and Louis's relationship is a great example of toxic relationships. Armand just made it worse. I always felt bad for Claudia. Too bad we will never see a vamp flick like this again.

    I know Anne Rice initially objected to Tom Cruise’s casting, but I thought he, Brad Pitt and Kristen Dunst were great. Unfortunately I always only see “Christian Slater the Actor,” not the character, when he is in a movie, and I like Antonio Banderas but thought he was too gruff and not boy-ish enough to play Armand.

    • @richardmoores
      @richardmoores 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, Anne Rice originally objected to Tom Cruise being casted as Lestat, because he was 1. Not blonde, and 2 wasn’t tall enough. But after his casting tape she realised that a blonde wig would fix that, and that he carries himself tall, and his charisma would do the rest.

    There is a better movie and frankly I think David Bowie would have been a better Lestat who made Brad Pitt as Louie. The books should have kept Lestat as evil, but caring for his two fledgling creations.
