    The reason it has slow parts is JJ wanted you to feel how long they’ve lived. How boring it might get. How lonely. It’s a beautiful film. I agree

      I grew up in Metro Detroit in the 70's and left there in late 80's. This film kind of gave me chills with it's really dark depiction of the undead living in the ruins of a dead city.

      My understanding is that it's turning around now. But it all but died. that's why it's so compelling in the film. Adam is living in the ghost of a city.

    As I binge-watch these videos it occurs to me that the modern vampire can also be a metaphor for introvertism and extrovertism. As an introvert I can relate to how there are times when you don't want to leave the *safety* of your home environment until you have to (Dang. The fridge is empty.) and to not necessarily be in touch with the outside world.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That totally makes sense. But it's also I think a depiction of an artist's two sides. The appreciator can live peacefully in the stories and artworks of others. But the creator is never satisfied, always in a painful cycle of ebb and flow, inspiration and its lack.

    This is the sort of film many would call plotless, but it's what screenplay guru Robert McKee calls a "mini-plot." All the elements are there, but they're very subtle, and often internal. Plot made up the of the story events transforming the protagonist. Here we see a character struggling to find a reason keep going when existence feels meaningless, and through the events of the film, he finds that reason. But it hits all the points of any other movie. It has an inciting incident, a dramatic need for its protagonist, Adam, and a conflict with Eve, who like all great romance stories is both lover and antagonist. The conflict occurs in their ongoing debate over whether existence has sufficient meaning to make continuing worthwhile. And though the plot twists are understated, and the characters take it stoically, it really is a struggle of life or death, just as much as with any action movie hero. I find this film deeply moving. It's clearly the work of an older, world-weary artist trying to find enough inspiration to keep making movies, which is apparently exhausting, back-breaking and heartbreaking work.

    I liked this film. The immortality of vampires is a subject that is rarely explored in cinema even though it's such a rich topic to mine. "The Hunger" explored similar themes.

    Another really great thing about this movie, to me at least, was the soundtrack. In fact, after I'd seen it, I immediately bought it on iTunes. It's been maybe a year since I've seen it and the imagery and music still comes back to me unbidden at times. It was a very good review of it too!

    This comment contains spoilers. Fair warning.
    Because of the extreme lengths they had to go through to get clean blood or the "good stuff" as it was called, the idea they would come up short in an emergency isn't so unrealistic. You can only plan for about 99% of anything and it's sometimes that 1% that gets you in the end.
    I just wondered what Eve and Adam were planning to do about two new vampires who were also going to need clean blood sooner or later.

      I suppose they were going to eventually be able to get more of their “supply”. As every addict knows, there are going to be dry times when you are really screwed and become desperate...but eventually you find something, a new connection or whatever. Until then, they would just have to do things like a “normal” vampire would.

    MAVEN! If you want to see more Mia W in action, I highly suggest the film Crimson Peak by Guillermo Del Toro, which Mia stars in. Despite the vampiric name, this is not a vampire film but a gothic romance that just so happens to include a few ghosts on the side. Tom Hiddleston is also in this film along with a terrifying performance by Jessica Chastain and it's a spectacular movie that you MUST watch!

    I had only found out about this because the rental place in my small town has odd titles. Of course I bought it after watching it.
    The first thing, and most importantly to me, was the intelligence of the characters. They are both immensely educated and naturally refined; something you don't see in more "classic" Hollywood vampire films. They sleep in beds, not coffins. Though Adam does make that trope into a joke.
    One thing I find a bit spooky about this film though, is the reference to the current water crisis.

    Even though that idiotic Shakespeare conspiracy gets brought up here it doesn't bother me. The vampire Marlowe worked through Shakespeare, and the vampire Adam worked through Tesla. That's just part of the mythology here. Unlike a certain other movie that just spouts the bullshit conspiracy, along with a load of other conspiracies that don't make sense either, and insists that they're fact.

    • @parallaxnick637
      @parallaxnick637 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What annoys me about the whole "Marlowe is Shakespeare" thing is that it is like future historians finding prints of "Close Encounters" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and concluding they were by the same director.

    • @permaveg
      @permaveg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "idiotic Shakespeare conspiracy" is not a conspiracy at all but fact, if you do some de-coding and some digging you discover that the real writer of those plays and sonnets etc. was in fact the 17th Earl of Oxford, Sir Edward de Vere 1550-1604, and Kit Marlowe, Sir Francis Bacon,, Ben Johnson and many others knew it too. William Shakspere , his real name, could barely write his own name let alone a fucking sonnet.

    SPOILERS
    it was a bit of a weird ending, but at the same time
    I really liked it
    I saw it as them seeing themselves in this young couple and i think they figured that if they were going to turn someone they might as well turn a couple who could live happily and in love like they have for so many years
    i agree that it was a little cop-out-ish about how they didnt have any other solutions to their problem
    but its possible that Eve had just depended on Marlo the entire time she'd lived there and never searched for herself to find a source since she already had one
    but idk, i hadnt actually thought about it very hard and you actually make some really good point
    I really like your review videos, I havent watched a lot of vampire movies, which all your reviews are about lol, but of the ones ive watched and you've reviewed, i like your videos!

    I'm not a major vampire fan, but I really enjoyed your review/analysis of this movie, which I did also love btw. I'd really enjoy seeing you do more in depth reviews of other movies (non vampire). Have you seen other Jarmusch films like "Dead Man" and "Broken Flowers"? I think you'd enjoy them. They are similar in style, depth, symbolism.
    You have a great delivery and nice voice. I enjoy your pauses and slower delivery...No umms, buts etc.. Keep up the good work. I feel like you are talking & connecting with me (the viewer) and not reciting some standard review pitch. I've re-watched this 3 times now. Totally agree with your take on the ending.

    This is and probably always will be my favourite vampire film, if not one of my all time favs in movie and keep coming back to it as a masterclass of subtle understatement, breaking every "rule" of movie making and still delivering on every level. It's interesting coming back [yes i've seen this review before] to this and still share your hope of seeing something on this level again but as yet have struggled to find it and your hope in the last few moments of this video six years on makes me a little sad we are still recovering from the decade of superheroes and YA relegation of the vampire movie. If you've seen anything to hold a candle to this movie i'd love to hear about it! As always good hunting Maven.

    great review! this is a yearly October watch since the year I found it.
    The ending was the perfect balance for the vampyre characters lost throughout the film as far as "spooky at a distance" Law goes...Eva will no doubt suffer her demise from music industry blood & Marlowe has just passed...turning a couple is the cosmic balance.
    Any thoughts on Ian's other customer at the bar???(not wearing sunglasses and had exposed hands) Lycan??
    quite loving of Eve to buy a beautiful instrument out of the same wood as the bullet- the binomial nomenclature references were authentic, knowing they were prolly around when everything was named by each scientist...nice touch

    The lore of vampires that always intrigued me the most, and that has been widely ignored, is their longevity. If you're immortal and have endured longer than a human span, existence would be very different from we mortals. What would you do to fill your hours? Would you spend your time learning? Sitting on a couch day in day out? Would time be a burden or a gift? That would be the most consuming thing that would distinguish vampires from mortals; their perspective and whether they're utterly burnt out or have transcended this...grind. Instead, every depiction of a vampire from every storytelling viewpoint is an unhealthy fixation of drinking blood. Yes, it's what you do, yes, it keeps you going, but Jesus, you only need to feed a limited number of times a week. It's like a story of a normal human person unable to think of anything but food. Such a petty take on vampires. I would imagine they would be interesting, if encountered, and their immortality would be the part that sets us apart, not their diet. This particular movie wasn't bad. It was slow but addressed the idea of immortality and how it can be a joy and a prison sentence. It was innovative for the genre and I applaud the effort but it still seemed very...human in its scope. Maybe we are incapable of imagining eternal life and can only humanize the experience in a way we can relate to it. I'm 50 and in my relatively short life, I've changed so much over the decades. The things that brought me joy or compelled me at 20 in no way speak to me now. Imagine how I'd feel about 2022 in a hundred years. That's the thing is that vampires in movies seem so incapable of growth. They never reinvent themselves or discover new ideas that consume them or even better themselves or heal their traumas. A vampire at 500 years is usually no different than a vampire at 20 years, when in our mortal lives, a regular human at 20 v. 80 is entirely different.

    I adored this movie, can’t think of one bad thing to say about it. I don’t care for “emo” vampires, and wouldn’t compare Adam at all to Louis or Lestat or any of the characters in the Twilight silliness. I didn’t even think he was emo. His concerns about the world were valid...and I don’t really think the film dwelled too much on the modern vampire issues, like immortality. Adam did not have your typical vampire concerns. He was an artist as well as a vampire. He didn’t care about his hair. He was perfect. I like both “human” vampire stories - like this one, and The Hunger, or Byzantium...and though I loved the first two Ann Rice novels, I did not care for the films, I thought they were very miscast. I also love the other types of vampire movies, Salem’s Lot (creepiest vampires), 30 Days of Night and the NightStalker pilot from the early 70’s (scariest vampires)...and then, one of the best, Dracula with Frank Langella (sexiest vampire)...and of course there is Carmilla (lesbian vampires). All good.

    Thanks for a great review, I ended up buying the movie a while back and enjoyed it immensely because of your recommendation, so many thanks for that too! Characters were great, visual design was interesting, and bringing up reference to 2008 recession and water crisis in Detroit helps to give some historical critique to a film that you're expecting to do the opposite (mostly through bringing up past events that may or may not be relevant to the issue of human existence in the present).
    I can slightly agree that the ending did come off as weird, but my mind felt satisfied with the overall answer.

    • @CloveClover02
      @CloveClover02 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In the original lore, vampires can be defeated by silver. When vampires became more mainstream, most of the writers for books, movies, and/or tv shows dropped this aspect. Other ways to stop vampires were dropped as well. For example, they can't cross running water, the Eucharist can work the same way as holy water, a brick shoved in the mouth to stop it from feeding, and a net over the coffin can stop them.

      Also, the counting. Usually in Asian portrayals, vampires have OCD and must count everything they come across, meaning you could get away throwing down a large bag of rice as they'll have to stop and count every grain.

    Awesome review. It's a crime that I haven't watched this movie yet.
    Out of curiosity, have you read the comics or seen the show PREACHER? I'd be interested in your thoughts on the character Cassidy. Very unique vampire character, reminiscent of Spike in a lot of ways, though still his own one-of-a-kind creation.

    That Yin Yang diagram at roughly 6:30 is totally WRONG. Yin (female, passive, cold, etc.) is the WHITE side, while Yang (male, active, hot, etc.) is BLACK. Most people from the west are so used to their own colour symbolism that they get these backwards a LOT. Also, it's Yin. No g in the end. [/smartass]

    I feel like the ending might've taken Eve more into consideration than Adam, though he's not excluded. She would've had to introduce those young vampires to their new lives, wouldn't she? No better vampire to do that. They seem to replace Marlo (?) and Eva, who were more important to Eve than Adam.

    Detroit at night is empty off the main roads. People are afraid of car jacking , crime and with so many abandoned buildings over 100,000 there are vast stretches of nothing to drive to.

    I think that simplifying the narrative for the viewer makes movies less appealing. On the other hand you have to look at what the target audience is for a movie. In the case of Twilight and Vampire Academy it is obviously not aimed at adults.

    Honestly it wasn´t the pace that bothered me (in fact, I thought it was soothing), so much as the pretenciousness of the screenwriting, filled with one liners like "Oh, well I should have met him before doing Hamlet" or "Yeah, I told Tesla to publish it, but he didn´t listened" and of the sort. A film that also involves mashing characters with historical events and figures (SPOILER ALERT!!!) is "The Man from Earth" and, though there are are some pretentious lines here and there, it's not all over the place like in this movie.
    The other thing that goes badly portrayed is the music industry. Everything is so cliché, so well suited to the image the general public has about music. Trust me, I'm from the music industry, and if a guy can compose a string quartet for Schubert, he won´t be into emo underground grunge a century later, just because both events have depressed friend circles and after midnight gatherings involved. I believe such a character would be more of a snob like-sort-of Hannibal Lecter.
    It's like those scripts where the author wants to look philosophical so he makes the actors quote great philosophers, and it all sounds fake, like "we know you've only read some selected texts at high school and googled the rest!!". And this happened in TV shows I respect, like Dr. House, Lost or Hannibal.
