    There is one major thing I actually like about twilight. One thing stephenie Meyer did really well and entirely by accident, and that is the conflicts between covens.
    Let me explain, wile it's closed over the idea that vampires in this world are so powerful and fast they section off vast territories for there covens makes sense. They need to be careful with not over hunting and drawing attention to themselves. Not because humans pose much threat but to not provoke a challenge from rival covens. To draw attention to one is to draw attention to all. I also really like the idea that wile older vampires have more control and experience, newborn vampires are actually physically stronger for a time especially as it comes with drawbacks. Newborn vampires are stronger, faster, and have slightly sharper senses at the cost of self control and focus.
    Veronica proved just how big a threat a newborn army can be to even a powerful and entrenched coven. Even if the local coven have psychic abilities.
    Jasper's backstory proves just how brutal inter-coven feuds and territory disputes can be.
    And I'll even give the powers that some of the vampires gain after turning a pass, as given the turning process literally perfects the human body it stand to reason that certain people who have psychic potential would have the abilitys amped considerably.
    Latent psychic potential also explains Jacobs tribe and the "Spirit warriors", astral projection and possession. Following the logic a considerably powerful enough warrior would possess a wolf's body and psychically force a physical change on the body to become human is possible.
    In all and by complete accident Myer has created the skeleton of a fascinating world where clans of psychically powerful warriors are constantly at war with each other and kept contained by the vampire Mafia.
    Just imagine what twilight could have been if it wasn't a complete bastardization of Romeo and Juliet.

    I was never a Twihard, but I do remember inhaling those books the first time around. When I tried to re-read them it was actual agony.
    Also while the sparkling was a little absurd, I liked that there was a reason for it. Steph had an internal logic to her vampires and was pretty consistent with them, which you gotta give credit to.

    • @noelbernabe8704
      @noelbernabe8704 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, as much as people complain about the sparkling there I do think there's more internl logic to sparkling than to magically combusting into flame when you're hit by Twilight. The only reason people find the sunlight thing less absurd is because they're more used to it.

  • @KaiInMotion
    @KaiInMotion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think one thing Twilight doesn't get credit for is that it's continuously inspired people to start reading and writing. Countless authors will tell you Twilight inspired them to start their writing or publish their stories. Listen to First Draft podcast by Sarah Enni. Half the authors she speaks to say Twilight kickstarted their passion for books. It's why I started writing at and now I have several novels under my belt. Including a vampire one. 😭🙏🌹 It also changed both the publishing and movie industries and literally birthed the YA bracket whole as far as books go.

    Thank you for pointing out the "Sparkling means they would win in a showdown" point. I always thought it was so ridiculous that people used the "they sparkle" talking point to call them pussies; you're right, it's WAY less wimpy to react to sunlight by bursting into flames. I get that the actual complaint is that the sparkling is a symptom of the way the franchise panders, but speaking strictly about the mythos itself, being immune to sunlight is kind of a badass change to make to the monsters. If the story had actually kept them as monsters, these vampires would have been terrifying.

    • @Hauptseite
      @Hauptseite 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Funny enough, vampires weren't originally vulnerable to sunlight. It was Nosferatu that added the sunlight threat to the vampire mythos (for better or worse). Most just slept during the daytime, like the original Dracula from Bram Stoker's novel, and in Hellsing (published in 1998) Alucard was completely immune to sunlight and pretty much every single weakness commonly associated with vampires. As much as I hate Twilight, I must confess that they would be pretty tough in a fight and hard to defeat. Thankfully there are a few vampires that would still whoop their asses. Alucard is one of those few. Caine from V:tM would be another epic curbstomp. A large portion of other vamps, however, would be dust in a heartbeat.

      @noelbernabe8704 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Twilight vamps definately get a bad rap in this regard. They are one of the most powerful, and therefore potentially most dangerous and scary vampires out there.
      Unlike vamps in other fiction, humans basically have no chance against them. Most other vamp fiction have human hunters who with the right training can kill vamps. But I don't think humans can actually kill Twilight vamps (short of using more modern weaponry like maybe flame throwers or whatever).
      Just because they sparkle doesn't mean they're not incredibly powerful and dangerous. I think the only reason people often don't see that is because the vamps we see are this nice wholesome family.

    • @heathercalun4919
      @heathercalun4919 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@noelbernabe8704 I mean I DO dislike this franchise. But the mythos is not the problem. The meat of the story is an abstinence parable. And mormonism is just antifeminist yall. Harry Potter has flaws, but it has themes of bravery, and dealing with grief, and as Mark Twain put it; "not letting your schooling stand in the way of your education"
      What is Twilight about? "Wait until marriage to get Satanic superpowers or have hiz babis"
      Unrelated, I just finished watching "The Ringing Bell" with my mom? It's a good fairytale, and there were some details I hadn't heard of the story, so I'm glad I watched it, but I'd give the English dub a 5/10: voice acting for Chirin was ear-bleeding, dialogue cheesy, I'm really hoping the theme song had better lyrics in Japanese. I'll give you 3 guesses why I wanted to watch that movie; which other TV show it's relevant to.

  • @nyaru79

    Valiant attempt.
    In relation to the Edward and Bella "love" story, I think it's significant that Edward falls for the first girl whose mind he can't read. If he'd been able to see how self-absorbed and uninspired her internal dialogue really was...then he may have fallen off the "vegetarian" wagon, but that would have been the end of the story.
    I tend to agree with many of the other commentators that one of the main problems with Twilight is that nothing feels earned. The rewards come without cost and I'm not just referring to plot. Even the vampires are deprived of (almost) any consequences for their immortality. It's these consequences that have made them such an important and even tragic figure in literature. The moral ambiguity of prolonging one's life by taking it from another...Twilight vampires can become "vegetarians". Vampires find themselves banished to perpetual darkness...Twilight vampires can bath in the sunlight as long as there are no humans around to watch them twinkle.
    The only real price we see for Twilight vampires is paid by female vampires alone; that of being biologically sterilized, and since the only progeny a vampire is supposed to produce is achieved by turning a human anyway...it's hardly heart-rending.

    • @shadowboxing7029
      @shadowboxing7029 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I doubt if you could read anyone's mind you'd be able to feel a strong connection with them. What we do I feel is far more significant than what we think, actions speak louder than words as they say.

    • @MoonShadowWolfe
      @MoonShadowWolfe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      You know what drives me nuts? They're feeding on endangered species. Grizzly bears, mountain lions, those are protected animals. I mean, they're not even getting blood from a butcher or using Carlisle's connections to get donated human blood, nothing, they jump right to the most morally reprehensible blood source apart from humans. And honestly, considering that Edward's previous sources of human blood were evildoers and people close to death, I honestly never bought their insistence throughout that driving the local predators to extinction was less of an awful thing to do.

    • @Luanna801
      @Luanna801 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Donated blood is meant for humans who need blood transfusions and could be in serious medical trouble (even die in some cases) if they don't get it. How is that morally better than feeding on animals? I agree, it's better if they left endangered species alone, but I still value human lives first.

    • @MoonShadowWolfe
      @MoonShadowWolfe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm assuming in their world, since they started getting donated human blood in the fourth book (I was at one point a twelve-year-old, so I did read them) that they don't have the same shortage of donated blood that we do. That, or he's getting it at the end of its shelf life when it's no longer medically useful and they'd just throw it out anyway.
      But what's more, I've never considered it morally better to put the lives of humans above the lives of creatures vital to the ecosystem. That's what causes one ecological disaster after another. You take top predators out of an area, that area very quickly becomes unlivable; we saw it happen in Yellowstone when the wolves were extirpated for the sake of livestock, selling wolf pelts and trophy hunting. Would I let someone die to keep that from happening? Yes, I would.

    I liked the back round characters they were actually quite interesting and had some depth.
    I did not like Bella and Edward's Characters though . I guess the romance would have been fine if they was more personalities and more likeablity for Bella and Edward.
    The Vegetarian vampire thing was okay but the sparkle was kind of meh. Besides that I liked some parts.

    • @strawberrysoulforever8336
      @strawberrysoulforever8336 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How about a vampire who isn't vegetarian and doesn't sparkle, but instead doesn't have to kill victims and doesn't react inhumanly from the sun except that he can't tan, but since he had natural caramel-coloured skin as a human and is only a bit paler that's not such a big deal (unlike his girlfriend who was naturally pale, though not as chalk-white as she became as a vampire, and now can never get a tan). Oh, and when this vampire feeds, he does it by waking a teenage girl he's chosen (he's seventeen forever and because he looks and feels seventeen, feels that the amount of time he's been immortal is irrelevant) and seducing them, usually having sex with them and then feeding on them while they're too distracted.
      Yeah, my vampire character's a casanova jerk. Luckily, he doesn't go any further than taking off their top when he gets a girlfriend. Her rule is "Keep it above the waist or over the clothes" because she accepts distracting them as a strategy. Her way of doing it is to wake a victim, tell them exactly what she's going to do (because she gets a high out of exerting power over people) and then let them know that the only effect will be a bite mark and feeling slightly weaker than usual for a day. Then she feeds.
      Okay, so the characters are based off a certain cartoon couple and both characters were considered two of the biggest villains in the series (she's a ruthless backstabber, he's a sneaky manipulator - no wait, both of them are both those things), even though a more recent villain attempted to kill five people for money.

      Fae have always been terrifying. Not even joking. Read Fablehaven, Lord and Ladies, Heart of the Fae, Shadowhunters, or any folk story. Fae may be mischievous and pretty, but thier beauty underlies a sharp cruelty. They can entrance humans with music, robbing them of thier free will. They kidnap beautiful children to be their servants. Irish faries can bring both good luck and ill fortune. Recent media has softened them (in a way that is explored in Lords and Ladies), but the origin tales of the Fae depict them as dangerous and frightening. Thier horror lies in the deception inherent in thier nature; a beautiful facade, but a fickle and dangerous temperament.

    There's lots of things terrible and inexcusable about this series, mainly the "romance"/love triangle, the way Meyer handled real criticism of the series instead of the typical "twilight sucks but I won't state why lul", and the main characters being flatter than wet cardboard. That being said, if you're willing and capable of stretching your suspension of belief while reading, the universe and the vampires themselves itself can be...interesting at the very least. Not the best, not exactly the worst, just interesting. It's certainly better than 50 shades for sure 😅
    Now that I've thought about it, any kind of fictional narrative can be considered "wish fulfillment," probably one of the biggest criticisms of this series. I find that to be hypocritical to slam someone just because they have these kind of fantasies. EVERYONE has these kinds of fantasies with their other favorite books, tv shows, movies, and whatnot. Sure, well rounded characters and a universe where things can be explained well and not have too many confusing, contradicting universe laws make a universe with magic and mythical creatures believable, but it still falls under the wish fulfillment category, and I don't think that people should *solely* focus on that kind of thing because it feels so shallow conpared to the romatisization of Edward and Bella's nearly-everything-but-*physically*-abusive relationship and the lack of real consequences in the last book. It's downright childish in fact.
    As for the whole sparkle thing, well I mean I like glitter ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't know if I'd want to glitter permanently but just because I glitter it doesn't mean I can't kick your ass, so why compromise on that just because people think it's "girly?" That's kind of sexist/misogynistic tbh...

    The way they break like glass and are completely white on the inside like porcelain dolls looked really cool and had a nice contrast with their blood red eyes.
    The shinning in the light might not be the best looking effect, but it can be improved if behind the shining you see their rmtrue faces rotting from age and full with so little humanity that you might have a hearth attack on the spot or attack in uncontrollable anger.
    The werewolves I didn't like, don't know why, I just didn't like them as a how.

      Ooh good idea! It makes me think of Dorian Gray. But would their faces change according to the goodness of the vampire or in spite of it? The "vegetarian" clans, like the Cullens are the most civilized and but there are other clans (I don't remember their names) who are not wilder and still feed off humans. Nevertheless, it would cause more internal conflict for vampires. Especially the ones who socialize with humans and care not to feed on them. Edward, being such an existential thinker, would be very torn because of it, thinking it's the proof that he is a monster, even if he is trying to be "good". And it would be so scary to see it as a human. Imagine Bella seeing his face deformed like that, in the forest scene!
      I like the werewolves, especially because they are native American characters (a thing we see too rarely!) and because they are good supernatural counterparts to vampires (cold/dead vs warm/alive) but maybe they would have benefited from being developed in a separate book.

  • @leahst.martin1776

    All of the other Cullens.
    Induction of the Skinwalker wolf.
    The imposition of the Volturi and the fear of them by other vampires (they didn’t use it enough but just imagine the Volturi if they’d been set up as the non sparkly, non brooding vampire archetype. They’d be terrifying)
    Edit: I’ll admit if they’d trashed the love triangle and just had it be Charlie finding out one of the local celebrities and his family were vampires, while his best friends and his family were werewolves and now he has to learn to navigate this new world. That story would be amazing. And you could still include the Volturi final face off just base it on the law against humans knowing about vampires.

    Twilight's vampires aren't undead. Yes, their hearts don't beat, but they never actually die (or even anything resembling it) when they turn. They go from a living human to a living vampire. Bella actually asks about that in one of the books, and it's confirmed to her that you do NOT need to be close to death to turn. Indeed, the fact that she was *technically* dead when she began turning made it seem like a fool's errand that Edward even kept pumping her full of venom and performing CPR. Same happened with Emmett turned -- Rosalie had to rush him to Carlisle (because she couldn't trust herself to turn him) because he was dying from a bear mauling and there would be no hope for him if they started too late. You MUST be alive to become a vampire.

    Best thing about thid series, came from the movies: Charlie, because Billy Burke is my sarcastic soulmate and the soundtrack. They always managed to get some really good artists on there. I remember my mom and I read them and when the movie was coming out, we convinced my dad to go see it with us. We may have called it a "watered down" Underworld. He didnt hate it, but he was questioning where the werewolves were. It was kind of funny.

    In short as much as I hate Twilight, with out it I wouldn't have been able to introduce not nearly as people to possibly the best Horror RPG ever created, let alone role playing games in general as I did.

    I'm one of the few vampire fans who enjoyed Twilight it seems!! Then again, I am a wee baby who was in grade five or six when it came out, but even then I didn't get all the screaming about it that my friends did. It was actually the first novel I sat down and read to completion, up until then I was Gaston-ing it and tossing aside anything that didn't have pictures. It sparked my love of reading which is probably one of the reasons I still hold it so dear to my heart. Though that doesn't mean I adore it unconditionally. Oh no. I hate, hate, HATE Bella and Edward. Their relationship is shallow, Bella is manipulative and downright insane at sometimes which would have been good except she's the one we're meant to relate to. I'm sorry but no matter how much I love someone, I'm not going down the route of self harm for them. Bella in the book is marginally better and their relationship is a smidge more developed than in the movie but it's just so slight it's not worth looking at.
    In my mind, the best way to improve Twilight is to take the focus off of bland Wonder Bread Bella and Edward and shift it to character that actually have well designed backstories and interesting personalities. I think if say Jasper and Alice were the focus of the entire series, it would have been so much better. The biggest drawback for Twilight is that the main leads aren't INTERESTING. (And Edward is an emotionally manipulative stalker) I would have loved to see the romance and struggles of a woman who was locked up in a 1920's asylum who fell for the solider with a violent past, and the mutual support they would give each other as well as overcoming their past demons. But no. We get a love triangle that's built on lies on one side and feelings of inadequacy on the other. Ugh.

    I can't bring myself to dismiss this franchise, despite the ire it so often gets. Its dedicated entirely to the romance\goth ambiance elements of vampire mythology, but I'll go so far as to say that it handles those elements well, if you account for the demands of a teenage audience and genre fiction. In a paradoxical way, its feminist because women like it of their own accord. Society doesn't want them to like it, but they take the liberty to enjoy it anyway. Freedom is finding pleasure in the unsanctioned. That said, Breaking Dawn is terrible. They replaced everything sexy with an ad for traditional marriage, and then dragged that bad idea across 4 hours. If Dracula awoke to find that teenage girls were turned on by puritanism, he'd go back to sleep.

    • @discreteloner9573
      @discreteloner9573 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You said it feminist. How is that? Can you enlighten me? I have heard that the female vampires can't get pregnant but the male vampires can make a female human pregnant. How is this feminist. I think it is more sexist. Even though some said the males still have left over semen from when he was a human so he can make a female human pregnant, but why can't the female vampires pregnant. It is a very poor excuse to say that the hardness of vampires bodies make it impossible for the female to bear a child, but there is no rule said vampires can't do other humanly such as their bodies are too stiff so they are not bendy or the impossible speed and agility.

      Hang on @discrete loner . Let's take the point you bring up. What does the fact that female vampires are sterile but male vampires aren't have anything to do with feminism? This is just the fabricated biology of the universe. No one is telling the female vampires not to have babies. They couldn't even if they wanted to. It's certainly a really odd piece of fantasy biology and doesn't make much sense but it's not sexist! It's like saying women can't run as fast as men so that's sexist. It's not.

    • @fightingmedialounge519
      @fightingmedialounge519 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's just it, the writer actively chose not to give the female vampires the ability to have kids, even though she retconned it so that males could, could possibly hint at some form sexism.

    I know I'm late for the party, and I could bring this up partially thanks to the perspective of time, but one of the most wonderful things, if not the best, to come out of Twilight is the coming together of teen girls and 40 y.o. moms that told the wold to shut up, we like what we like. Teen girls and romance fans are so often ridiculed and snubbed that it was so nice to see them giving the world the finger and enjoying the thing they love out in the open, under the blinding light of the popular culture. It was shiny. 😉

    I still have to go with the Nosferatu Primogen Daedalus. If you want creative, Daedalus is a philosopher, probable was a Toreador ghoul before being turned since he likes to paint, a skilled alchemist, lived for 3000 years, tamed his Beast, defended San Fransisco from a Methuselah, and setup his adopted son to be the new Prince. Daedalus has some mad skills.
    Werewolves has it just as bad. Uninteresting, under developed, what homework was done got burned, and now on the same list as Herbert the Pervert. Yes told topic is old, still backtracking because of the Blip shutdown.

    Random thoughts I'm just gonna dump here:
    1.) The speaking voice you use for your Vampire reviews reminds me a lot of Kate Monster from "Avenue Q," and I love that
    2.) You just HAD to remind me that you live (or at least used to live) in NYC. I have a deep-seated vicious envy for people who live anywhere with a subway. Don't ask.
    3.) I am no fan of "Twilight," but sans the sparkling I like Meyer's descriptions of her vampires (sans Edward), and I love the idea of one's mental strengths in live becoming supernatural powers in death. Someone online also pointed out that the vampires each become fixated on things related to their deaths. (For instance, Rosalie was murdered right before her wedding, and is obsessed with marriage and babies.) I think that's a cool concept.
    4.) I read "Twilight" immediately after reading "Eldest," and compared to that series, I can name a billion and one ways in which "Twilight" is "good." It's sad but true.
    5.) And one of those things, nay THE biggest difference between Meyer and Paolini, and the one thing I really respect about Stephanie Meyer, is what you pointed out: she wrote what she wanted to.

    Yes, I went through a Twilight phase, but now the only thing I really like about it is the wolves...and Alice and Jasper. Honestly, if there was a movie made that just focused on those two, I would absolutely watch it. They just seemed so wholesome and cute! But, with the sparkling thing...okay, I can admit it was a creative turn. But, what I don't like about it is something I heard in another review. The fact that their skin doesn't burn takes away that weakness they had. Now they just seem overpowered, like if one wants to kill you, there's literally nothing you can do about it. Though I guess they are extremely flammable?(As we saw when Victoria died) So, does that make up for it? I don't know, I just thought it was kind of weird.
    On another note, I really liked the video. I've watched a couple of them now, and congratulations! You now have a new subscriber!

    14:56. Almost six years later, the director of the remake, Matt Reeves, is now coming off of making, what many people consider, one of the greatest movie trilogies in recent history with the Planet of the Apes remakes. So, I guess we can thank Twilight in some way?
