First time I ever saw Yngwie Malmsteen was in the early 80s when he was the lead guitar player for a band named Steeler. It was at the Country Club, in Reseda California. I’ll never forget during his solo he used my Heineken bottle as a slide. I was a very young kid at that time. I had some great times at that place during the 80s. Great guitar player and fun to see live. Great reaction.👏👏👏👏🤙🤙🤙🤙

@@RebeccaCampbell1969 Clearly you don't know anything about Yngwie, his primary influence was Paganini, second would be Bach. Yes, he is the father of "modern neoclassical" which is a guitar style that he pioneered. After him came Becker, Stump, etc.
Certainly one of the greatest players in the past 50 years. Steve Vai calls Yngwie a "freak of nature", and he's not wrong. Heavily influenced by classical music, he pioneered the Neo-Classical style and certainly inspired many young guitarists in the 80s to improve their playing. He's still touring as well.....worth the effort to see the show....he always has one heck of a stack or Marshalls (old school!).

Malmsteen is a beast on the guitar and with Jens Johansson on keyboards who is phenomenal player, they've put on amazing shows!
I think Jens was long gone at this point. I remember seeing Yngwie open for Dio in NYC back in the day around the time Jens joined Dio. It was weird seeing him not playing with Yngwie. Lol. Also, I was at a drum clinic in NYC (I believe it was at Cooper Union) around the same time and met both Jens and Anders Johansson and got their autographs!

It's pronounced "ing - vay m'am - steen" 😁Born in Sweden, (and u were right!) he grew up w/ European classical music and also on the music of Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple/ Rainbow, Uli Jon Roth of the Scorpions... Yngwie learned to play guitar as a kid and went pro in his teens when he came to America in the early 80's and joined L.A. rockers Steeler... He was soon picked by former Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet to play guitar for the rock band Alcatrazz... It made him a star in Japan and Yngwie was writing original music at age 19 for his debut solo album in 1984 - the mostly instrumental record was released under the banner Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force - 'Black Star' was the opening track ... w/ vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, he completed a 2nd album 'Marching out' (1986) and it solidified his 'guitar hero' status as he demonstrated blazing speeds on the fret that no guitar player could pull off back then... 3rd album 'Trilogy' featured vocalist Mark Boals in 1986... but he was injured in a near-fatal car accident and faced a difficult recovery, as well as losing his finances when a manager took off w/ his earnings.
In 1988, Yngwie recovered his guitar skills and recorded his biggest album 'Odyssey' w/ another former Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner and marked the success w/ a live record 'Live in Leningrad' in 1989.
Unfortunately, Yngwie's brand of rock w/ blazing leads became obsolete as the 90's began... Goran Edman (vocals) recorded 2 albums - 'Eclipse' (1990) and 'Fire and Ice' (1992)... but neither sold as well... However, Yngwie J. Malmsteen persisted in the 90's and beyond w/ various lead singers and released a string of remarkable records from 'The Seventh Sign' in 1994 to 'Parabellum' in 2021.
Some Yngwie J. Malmsteen tracks (w/ vocals) - "I'll see the light tonight" ... 'Liar' ... 'Hold on' ... 'Rising Force' ... 'Judas' ... "Far beyond the Sun" (instrumental)... "You don't remember, I'll never forget"... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
His guitar’s are specially scalloped,that’s how he gets those amazing reverbs. He’s a legend. Been listening to him since he was 16 in Steeler. Listen to Steeler intro to the track Hot on your Heels. Wow
Scalloped necks doesn't produce reverb. He scallops the necks to get the effect of having super tall frets because he's got very big and thick fingers and it allows him to get under the strings to bend.

I think you mean to say, "that's how he gets that amazing vibrato". Yes, a scalloped fretboard neck guitar helps with vibrato as well as bends...however, Yngwie would still have his amazing vibrato and complete control/command of string bending and pitch...with a bog standard guitar fretboard.
Born in '63 and recording the Steeler album in '82 he was about 19.
@@Chester_Cheese Yeah, the way Yngwie describes it, it's like having super tall frets (the frets being the wire, NOT the gaps between them. People often get that wrong, though I'm not implying you did.) On top of scalloping, he also replaces the standard Strat frets (which are normally quite thin and pretty short) with super jumbo frets, in addition to having a really high action (distance between the strings and fretboard). All of that combines to provide extreme control of each note and perfectly clarity and sustain, since none of the higher frets can attenuate the vibration of the strings. A properly set-up guitar shouldn't do this anyway, but with the way he plays, I'm positive he'd have fret buzz issues on more standard setups. He was inspired to do this when he was a teenager working for a luthier shop in Sweden and someone brought in something like a baroque lute that had a scalloped fretboard with integral frets (very uncommon for an actual lute, so it may have actually been a different but related instrument, he described it as a lute)

YJM's greatest accomplishment was "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E-flat minor, Op. 1", period.
Musically, I'd agree, ESPECIALLY his live performance of it (with some additions) with the the New Japan Philharmonic back in 2002. That was peak Yngwie for me, and is an hour and fifteen minute jaw dropping spectacle of total mastery and synchronicity with an exceptionally talented orchestra and conductor. However, the album itself doesn't have quite the same effect, for me anyway. It's still excellent, and the Czech Philharmonic on that recording was great, but the recording itself just cannot compare to the live performance. It just didn't hit me like Rising Force or Trilogy, or even Eclipse, The Seventh Sign or Alchemy. But that performance in 2002... it was just insane.
Level of talent that is hard to wrap the head around.

I had the great fortune to see SATRIANI VAI AND MALMSTEEN (G3 2003) at the Beacon Theater in NY. What a show also as guests they had John Petrucci and Neil Schon. It’s like I died and went to guitar heaven. Unfreaking believable
He carried his guitarr with him every where he went since he was 10. There is documentary about him

Back when I was young I had a friend who was really good at playing guitar and he played a lot on Malmsteen songs. We used to have partys over his place, and he turned his amp to max and played Malmsteen songs. So fking cool!

Yngwie is a neoclassical guitarist with major skills and a huge ego to match. No doubt a great guitarist.
He is also a huge fan of Niccolo Paganini. If you get a chance, watch Sam Nunn's Metal Evolution the classical episode which I think is episode #1.

You need to react to Hear N' Aid - Stars. It was metal's contribution to the charity effort during the 80's when the pop world was doing things like the Band Aid concerts. They assembled most of the A-list stars of metal from some monumental bands, but were also not snobbish enough to throw the door open to individual talents like Malmsteen and even Spinal Tap. The amount of talent in the one room is mind blowing and is a window into a bygone era at its absolute peak. This was before the heavier stuff like Megadeath and Pantera etc., which is a genre in itself, so don't be challenged by the fact that it is "metal".
Malmsteen is perhaps the most "Technically Proficient" guitarist in recent memory, even surpassing Eddie VanHalen in that regard. But there's more to guitar than technical ability. His music has never been especially moving. It's like eating a meal prepared by a 5-star chef, it's flawless, but it's still not Grandma's home cooking, if that makes sense...
Part of it is how do you share a stage with a guitarist that good? It doesn't leave a lot of room for the other musicians. It's like Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky... when they were in their prime they were super-stars, but at the same time college sports got a lot more popular because the guys at the top can't surprise you anymore. You expect them to win every time, and you're usually right, and it becomes less amazing. But if they stopped winning, you'd lose interest entirely. People get trapped in success that way.

@@jowbloe3673 - if you get a chance checkout songs like Crying, Brothers, Icarus Dream Suite, Overture 1383, and Marching Out just to name a few. You'll see Yngwie plays with a lot of heart and feeling. Those songs are the epitome of inspiration. Yngwie's vibrato and bending is often overlooked, but both are top notch.

Guy is one of the best for the last 40years. Came from a band called Alcatraz. Steve Vai also came from Alcatraz. The lead singer was of Alcatraz was Graham Bonnet who sang for Rainbow. Rainbows guitarist was Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, who Yngwie idolizes. One of Yngwie singers in his solo stuff was Joe Lynn Turner, who was also a singer in Rainbow, and one deep purple album in the 90's. Whew...trip down memory lane there lol!

Pronounced (Ingvay)....Steeler, Alacatrazz, Rising Force.....he played a lefthanded Stratocaster righthanded in honor of Jimi Hendrix in Rising Force in the early to mid '80s. His guitar has scalloped frets. Some of the Rising Force live shows from '85 are very good. Many people have never heard of him but he has been around for 40+ years or more.
Go look at one of his signature guitars, the frets are scalloped so he gets a different note the harder he pushes
While that can happen, he mentions in one of his instructional videos that I own that scalloping is for better grip/control on the strings. It is not for getting "other notes". Yngwie despises anything that is not "in-tune".

Recently, I've been taken with the all-female Japanese heavy metal band, Lovebites. They're amazing, and to fit with your channel, one of the guitarists competes in bikini bodybuilding competitions in her spare time! Well, I’d certainly rather listen to Yngwie with full orchestration than the plodding, major-pentatonic-scale AC/DC, any day. Especially if it’s that awful Brian Johnson, with his cat-fight voice. I could tolerate some of the more humourous tunes from the Bon Scott years, but as I’m in my 40s and have been playing guitar for 30+years, you’ve got to play more than pentatonic scales if you want to keep my attention.
I'm still waiting for reaction videos for the metal guitarist David T. Chastain. His albums, Instrumental Variation, The Heat Within, and Elegant Seduction are awesome. Does anybody in the You Tube world know about him???
