Yngwie was 21 in this. He is born in 1963 as I am.
Jens on keyboard and Anders on drums are brothers.
Jens is currently in the Finnish metal band Stratovarius, and he also was recruited by Ritchie Blackmore when he reunited his Rainbow a couple of years ago to perform some live shows.
Jeff Scott Soto on vocals is one of my favorite singers. He has been in bands like Journey, Talisman, W.E.T. and Sons of Apollo with Mike Portnoy and lots more.
And Yngwie writes all music himself.

too bad yngwie is a conceded knob that thinks he's hot shit when he's sloppier then ever now. he's more focused on practicing his pick throws then technique. he's the definition of washed up

Bassist is also Marcel Jacob, best bassist of all time in my opinion. Also played with Europe for a bit, John Norum and formed Talisman. Sadly passed away in 2009 by suicide.. Rip Marcel

Pretty sure Jeff also sang in Rainbow for some time.

    •  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@erikvaldur3334 I don't think he ever sang in Rainbow. But if you have any links that shows that, please share it. I checked the sites listing all the bandmembers over time in Rainbow, and I didn't find his name.

@ yeah, I think you're right. I was thinking of someone else. Something Bonnet I was picturing.
A "not very well known name" but good vocalist. I'm picturing a CD where there were songs from I think 3 different vocalists on the CD. Not sure why I thought it was Jeff.

The first the metal world heard Yngwie Malmsteen was in 1983. Newly arrived in America, he played on the one and only album from the band "Steeler" fronted by singer Ron Keel. Any and all metal heads and metal musicians were completely blown away by this guy. We had heard nothing like him before. He went on to join Alcatrazz who was fronted by Grahm Bonnet of "Rainbow" fame. Yngwie was the first truly neo-classical shredder. I was in a touring band in the 80's and was deep in the metal scene. There was definitely nobody like him. Most of rock and metal guitar playing was blues based, like what was being played in the 70s by guys like Richie Blackmore and Tony Iommi.
Yngwie is proof that the classical masters would have all been metalheads if they lived during our time period. There have been many imitators since Yngwie splashed onto the scene. He is truly the master. I got to see him up close when Alcatrzz played at a local nightclub where I lived. Two things I learned that night. First was that Yngwie had no comparable guitar player in the world at that time, and the second thing I learned is that Grahm Bonnett does not need a damn microphone...good god that guys sings loud!!

As a Swede I am so proud of this gang!! All the musicians were swedish but the singer american/puertorican.
It was Yngwie´s band and he was the star and quite rightly so. BUT the others were magnificant also. Brothers Anders Johansson on drums and Jens Johansson on Keyboards and my personal favorite Marcel Jacob on bass. Later on he and the singer Jeff Scott Soto formed the band Talisman. Check them out!! Marcel Jacob is sadly not with us anymore but the others are all still going strong in different bands.

The drummer Anders Johansson and keyboardplayer Jens johannsson are brothers and their father Jan Johansson was a legendary jazz pianist. Yngwie played like this even a few years earlier in his teens, there is a video from when he was just 18, so he was an ackomplished player early on and although he borrowed quite a lot from players like Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie took it much further at least when it comes to speed and certainly was one of the players that were early with playing that fast, i had never heard anything like it before when i heard him first here in Sweden in the mid 80´s.

What could be the most amazing thing about Yngwie is that he was truly a Wunderkind, as even years before this recording he was a fully-formed artist and live performer. There are videos of him playing in decent sized clubs in Sweden as a power trio with Marcel Jacob on bass and vocals, and a drummer (possibly Anders Johansson), and at 15 or 16 years of age, and essentially what you see here, circa 1984-85 is what he was already doing.
Quite a few songs and instrumentals written in his teen years would pop up on albums as deep into his career as the Eclipse album.
He pretty much owned the mid-80s guitar hero scene as Eddie seemed to be stepping back from that role to focus on songwriting and keyboards, Randy Rhoads was still on people's minds, but his influence was limited by his small volume of work prior to his untimely death, and Vai and Satriani had not quite gotten their big breaks yet.

Great reaction! Andrew, you have to react, analyze "Icarus' Dream Suite Op. 4" (studio version), a masterful song from the first album, a stunning masterpiece, by Yngwie Malmsteen, "Rising Force", from 1984... I suggest with the same "enthusiasm" two other exceptional songs from Malmsteen's second album, "Marching Out" (1985): "Disciples of Hell" and "Soldier Without Faith", both studio versions...I also suggest another song by Malmsteen, another masterpiece, "Trilogy Suite Op:5" (studio version), from the album "Trilogy" (1986)...And yet another song, another masterpiece, by Malmsteen, "Krakatau", studio version, from the album "Odyssey" (1988)... I even had the privilege of seeing a live Malmsteen show in July 1988, in New York City: setlist with many songs from the two best albums, the first two , "Rising Force" and "Marching Out"...Unforgettable...Greetings from Brazil!!!

It really doesn't surprise me that you don't know about JSS, despite being one of the most respected vocalists in the rock/metal scene since the mid-80s... in fact for a brief period of time JSS was the vocalist for Journey.
PS I would never have believed that a tiger-print top would amaze a musician originating from the same land where such virile artists as the Bee Gees and Air Supply come from.😆

    • @Iamadrummer
      @Iamadrummer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Eddie Van Halen was the one coined with the term of guitar shredder. Yngwie Malmsteen came later and just used his love of classical music and shred it rock style on guitar. Yngwie really did not influence many guitarists and did not pave the way for shredding guitar. Yngwie has a great, unique approach to playing guitar, but he is never mentioned as an inspirational guitar shredder amongst all the other shredding guitar players. The number one shredding guitarist mentioned as a big influence is Eddie Van Halen.

He does write, arrange and basically record everything in his home studio. He's been called the next Yngwie in past guitar magazines.
Everyone in his band are top notch musicians. Drummer included.

I was a true heavy metal fan on 80's in my early teens and Yngwie Malmsteen was defenitely a thing, but I still feel sorry for the drummers of that genre and era. Everything was so guitar and vocal driven, that the bass and the drums were just the wallpaper behind them. And the drum sounds. Well, those have improved since then. A lot.

Malmsteen was not the first to be given the title of a guitar shredder. It was actually Eddie Van Halen with Van Halen's first release in 1978. The song was Eruption. No one had ever played guitar like that before, and people started saying things like "that guy shreds" and "that Eddie is a shredder on guitar," hence the term guitar shredder.

      @buzzbomb67 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yknow, thats what I thought too, and I spent quite a while searching to find out who, specifically, was the first… and of course every answer went back centuries about shred technique, but the general consensus, in the few cases where someone actually said who was the first, for the first to be actually called “shredder” was Yngwie. Not arguing, I just dont remember Eddie being called that until later, then suddenly everyone was called shredder.

Hey Andrew, so remember back when you did Austin Archey (Lorna Shore) and you wanted to see a live drum-cam of him? See if he could maintain that level of zen in a live setting?
Well, he finally remembered his youtube password and posted a drum-cam of their hardest song on drums. Into The Earth, it's about 290 BPM. He plays it perfectly, and well.... I'm not gonna spoil anything about the zen, but I watched it twice, second time just watching his face.
Also, as a bonus, there's a footcam in the corner of the video the whole time! He knows what the ladies like.

Yngwie appeard on the scene in LA in the early 80´s at the same time as Eddie van Halen. His guitarplaying and techniqe was unprecedented. He is basically self taught and took alot of inspiration from his mothers records of Paganini and Bach in his late teens back in Stockholm, or actually Upplands Väsby where also Europe formed at the same time. Jens and Anders are increadibly talented musicians, sons of Jan Johansson, legendary Swedish jazz pianist. They played with Yngwie in the band Force in Sweden before he left for LA. After leaving Alcatrazz he brought them over to join his new band Rising Force. The incredible singer Jeff and bass player Marcel Jacob (also early Europe) later formed the band Talisman. Check them out too. Marcel left us to early due to psychological illnes. Im my opinion this line up is the best he ever had.

Yes, Yngwie was a shreader. But I think that term was around before that. I remember that Mike Varney basically had a whole stable of players that were considers "shreaders"; Racer X with Paul Gilbert, Cacophany with Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, and others that I don't remember. But I think Yngwie was in Alcatraz and Steeler before dropping Rising Force on us and blowing our minds. Other notables that I do remember are Vinnie Moore and Tony McAlpine that came out roughly around this time.

I was 14 or 15 when I heared this for the first time. My face must have been like yours on this video. I was living with my mother, and there was no way, no means to share with her, or anyone what I had experienced. But remember, our independent music taste is often formed in that age. Few musical works, live or recordings, have ever affected like "I Am a Viking". I cannot say anything about the word "shredding". At that time, English was not heard in every corner in my home country. But we had an onomatopoetic word descriging Yngwie's playing.
His name:.. English language dont have the vowel that is marked with Y in Swedish. His real name is Lars Johan Yngve Lannerbäck. Yngve is not that rare name in Sweden. Swedish is not my native language either, but as far as I know, pronouncing that Y differs a bit according to the dialect. (Native speakers, please, help as needed!) However, the pronounciation fell somewhere between I (ih) and U (you). Speaking English, I'd pronounce his name Ing-We. Malmsteen, malmsten, is something like gravel ore ore stone. So, the familyname will be have two wovels, A and E, like A in "shark" and and the long somewhat like in "bed". I don't know how he pronounces his name himself. However, Swedes have funny habit to sometimes emphasize to both syllables of the words having two syllables. So, the pronounciation: "ING-wi MAlmStEEn." Think, for example, like "Sleeping in shark beeeeeed."

You called it perfectly as I started following Yngwie when he was recording with shrapnel records, all the way up until now, and yes, he is the supreme controller of all he does sometimes to the detriment of giving people something a little different. I am heavily influenced by him and his style. Many will argue that he is too one dimensional, but for what he does, there are none that come close to his feel and technique.

Love me some Yngwie - but honestly, on that specific recording, Jeff Scott Soto steals the show a bit (at least in my opinion) - he's one of my all-time favorite rock and metal singers.
Apart from that, you obviously get a like for the 240 p-ness crackup after the first few seconds. Keep 'em coming.
Also, I know I don't comment that regularly, mea culpa. But whenever I do, I need to remind you to react to Dimmu Borgir - The Chosen Legacy. As always, I shall not comment on why, because it'll spoil the fun, but it HAS to be the studio version with Jan Axel 'Hellhammer' Blomberg on the drums. If you don't get to it soon, I really think I gotta save up some moneys and sponsor a video :D

The first few records were really cool. Rising Force, trilogy, etc. Etc. But after a while I started finding myself wishing he would join a band. I understand he's a guitarist and artist first. But sometimes despite good songwriting skills, they would fit better as an integral part of a hole instead of as a solo. Just think if he had joined deep purple or UFO or some other band in the '80s or '90s that was looking for a guitarist...... He would have elevated them and not become just another shredder... Okay, that sounds much more harsh than I intended to be. He's a brilliant genius Guitarist but I just think he would have been better in a band
