➡️ Well, this was both humbling and inspiring. Watching Scott Shiflett's bass playthrough of "Bent But Not Broken" by ‪@facetoface‬ quickly motivated me to go work on my picking chops, because this guy plays effortlessly when it comes to fast-picked lines, string skipping, and punchy bass fills. As you all know, I'm a sucker for a ripping bass intro, especially when it reprises constantly throughout the song. I talk about Scott's controlled wrist angle, how he lets the "weight" of his hand aid in executing those quick string-skips, his alternate picking "inside" two strings, and how his fills challenge the song's main pulse with a ton of intricate syncopation. I also discuss some unique songwriting elements I heard, including the "call and response" sections between the vocalist and the rest of the ensemble. I have a few "go-to" guys to watch when I want to improve my picking technique, and Scott Shiflett has topped my roster - hands down.

Thanks for doing a play through, I actually started out a finger style player and do both depending on what I'm playing, in fact face to face was the first band I played exclusively with a pick (except for our "acoustic" tours where I played finger style) i'm sure crossover between fingers and picks informs my stylistic choices but who knows.. whenever it's freezing cold and I'm worried about a difficult first song of a set Trever always mentions I do it to myself..hahahaha

I laughed a little when he started slapping to get that run right, I used to do that all the time when I played more bass. I like the finger tone better mostly, but there are little timing things that I simply can not do with fingers.

Chris Shiflett used to play guitar in a punk band called No Use For A Name before joining the Foo Fighters. Funny thing is the bassist from No Use For A Name (Matt Riddle) was the original bassist for Face to Face...and he is pretty neat too

Barricade by interpol would be a great song to do a video on. And post punk has kinda been under represented on your channel(especially for being such a great rock subgenre for bass) so that might get my vote even before nomeansno.

Yeah, it ain’t easy. If it isn’t technically difficult, it’s probably just fast, and that’s tough in and of itself. Some really challenging stuff, I think that’s why I’ve fallen in love with it. A whole new side of bass playing for me.

@@LowEndUniversity btw, you should check Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) out. It's not the most skilled Punk Rock player in the world, but I think he is very underrated. His roots are in classic rock and he used to play in ska bands and such. I'd like to know what you think about his playing. Unlike Jason Black (Hot Water Music, that released an EP together), Joe Principe (Rise Against), Matt Freeman (Rancid) his sound is less "in your face", and I think that's the main reason people don't mention him a lot.

Face to Face are so freaking good live. They have more of an emotional touch than a lot of other bands of the genre and are great song writers. You can hear that even on their very early stuff like Disconnected. This band introduced me to sooooo many bands that I would fall in love with. They would take so many up and comers on tour with them. The amount of people who discovered Alkaline Trio, Saves the Day, The Anniversary, Get Up Kids, etc. from going to Face to Face shows is actually crazy. They may have been a "punk" band but they were instrumental in making the late 90's/early 2000's pop punk/emo explosion happen for many groups. That Vagrant era of bands is very dear to my heart and I would have never have found any of that stuff if I wasn't going to Face to Face shows.

Honestly, as someone who ended up playing bass in my bands, I think a lot of us punk bassists started as guitar players. Rodger from less than Jake did 100%.
A lot of that picking and styling is just playing what a second guitarist would play… on bass 😅
Then we fall in love with bass and learn how to actually play it like it “should be,” but that “guitar mind” never fades, it just gets mixed in.
If you’re having some difficulty learning picking, my main advice is to anchor your hand. If you watch Scott he almost never moves his wrist from where it is. Super important for control.

    • @LowEndUniversity
      @LowEndUniversity  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Great points! I was thinking about this during the video - is that picking cadence really as hard as it looks or sounds? May be a breeze for a guitarist, but what I do know is that overdriven leads are always easier to make sound clean. Bass has much wider string spacing, cleaner tones (no overdrive compression to rely on), and I think getting it to sound that good is the feat itself. Reminds me of the times I got my amazing guitar player friends to try to shred on bass and it always falls apart pretty quickly 😂

i love how honest you are about not being able to play at this speed and precision. most people just assume because it falls into punk that the technical chops are not there. scott shiflett is on another level when it comes to his technical prowess. his playing is so fluid and effortless from years of grinding away on his instrument. these videos are great to watch, keep it up.

Hey, bro! I had a hardcore band here in Brazil for 11y back in the day and the former bass player introduced me to your channel. You asked why we like to watch and, imo, is because you already play bass and teach it, but its lovely to see how you LOVE music and get everything that this genre has to offer for you. That's awesome! Keep up the good work, bro (and check some brazilian hardcore bands as well)!

There's something really specific in the picking of some players in punk, it's almost like the picking patterns have almost a percussive quality in the rhythm when they are being played as they fill the space between the drums and the guitars

I’m not saying it was because of my comment specifically.
But, boy am I happy to see that the song I suggested a couple of weeks ago was featured in this.
    Love this!

Another great video, nice one! I started out as a pick player and then saw Alex Webster keeping up with fingerstyle. That was a real, "oh shit, that's possible!?" revelation for me and since then I've worked hard on my finger game.

Thanks for playing some F2F with Shiflett! You should check out some of the older stuff from their albums Big Choice and Don’t Turn Away. The band’s original bassist Matt Riddle did similar fills but used his fingers. Totally different vibe but still excellent. Thanks again!

It's awesome that I am getting into your channel just as you're getting into my 'home base' genre of music. Watching you analyze and geek out a bit on this art is giving me a new respect for bass, and as a drummer my baseline levels of respect for it were pretty high to begin with.
I must say you MUST check out Tiger Army. Stand up bass psychobilly groove punk. There is nothing else like it.
For an introduction, I might recommend "Temptation," which appeared on Punk-O-Rama Volume 9 many years ago.

this song has insane picking for the main riff for sure. Took me a bit to learn it and play it to speed. This kind of punk is what I started out learning right off the bat during high school. PLastic pics were never able to cut it for me. Because of how they felt for faster stuff. It's always been Dunlops for sure. At first it was lighter picks till I learned harder picks made me sound more precice and punchier. so I went to the jim dunlop .73s or .88s were always my go to for past punk picking like this. I love watching your reactions to bands I love. I probably only discovered you a few weeks ago and you keep checking out songs from bands I grew up listening to and who shaped me as a bass player. Streetlight, Propagands, This song.. I also watched the AFI one. Which were also part of my early bass playing. I thin it was a single second from the shut your mouth and open your eyes album was the song my high school punk band would peridically butcher. lol

Not only are the guys in the band the nicest, coolest, most genuine bunch of dudes, but Scott will sit and talk music and bass with you all night. Super, SUPER rad dude! Just got tix to see them in Chicago in May. Can't wait for the show.

Such a monster bassline. Learning stuff like this when I started because of the genre was a ton of fun and really challenging. Opposite of you, though, there are other techniques and playing styles that I really struggle with because I never did those things starting out. I also never really practiced alternate picking. I still play mostly down strokes, so there are some songs that my playing sounds different from. But stuff like this ALWAYS drives me back to practice. Every time.
