My Best Friend Was Jealous Of My Popularity

- Colton is at the height of his high school career. He had a ton of friends, he was the captain of his football team and he had a great girlfriend. And, to top it off, he had his best friend since nursery school, Toby, right by his side.
But when Toby gets injured and is benched for the season, Colton starts to sense some jealous. Toby gives him dirty looks at their championship game, and when Colton tries to confront him about it later that night at a party, Toby randomly throws a drink in his face.
Colton has no idea why Toby is so upset with him and feels heartbroken that his best friend doesn't want to talk to him. Soon after, Colton finds out from a mutual friend that Toby had serious jealousy issues. Toby resented that Colton always seemed to be everyone's "first choice." Colton tried to be empathetic and apologized to Toby in the school cafeteria. But, instead of embracing the apology, Toby punched Colton right in the face and started at huge fight at lunch. As a result, Colton was suspended for six weeks.
When he returned back to school, Colton realized that Toby had been gossiping about him the entire time he was away. Even though he still had a core group of reliable friends, Colton felt like everyone had turned against him.
Today, Colton still really misses Toby and all the fun times they shared. He doesn't like having to say to himself, "My best friend was jealous of my popularity." Instead, he hopes that they can rekindle their friendship and let the past go.

So you're telling me your friend gets jealous of your popularity, you try to engage with him, he hits you, you get suspended, and everyone is against you.
I've never seen jealousy get that deep.
This story really made me skeptical…
There is no way you can actually get suspended for 6 weeks for doing that. 6 weeks is literally 1 month and 2 weeks.

I feel bad that he feels like he's the one who did something wrong. Just because his ex friend was butt hurt for not being as popular as him, that doesn't give him the right to hurt you physically and mentally. He ruined your image. He's just a narcissist.

@@AlfieTrevor4444 yeah, I understand the jealousy, because I was like that before. I have cousins that are beautiful, talented, and smart. But I never thought of hurting them or bringing them down, I accepted the fact that they're better in their own way, and I can be better in my own way. I'm happy and proud of them honestly, because I know they go through and have seen them go through such difficult times.

Not only that but six weeks for a scuffle seems way too excessive.
I could see maybe suspended for a day or two but six weeks is just unrealistic.

When I was in high school I never cared about popularity. I preferred to keep a low profile and out of drama
I can reciprocate. The pressure of popularity and having to constantly display an idealized persona of yourself sounds exhausting, especially in regard to mental health. Additionally, with all those parties and constantly having to be on top of everything I'd be too stressed and anxious to actually reap the benefits of having so many friends 🥲
The fact that his “ex friend” gaslights him about how “he changed” and “being left out” dude he is literally THE ONE who ignored him first because he wanted to be more popular then him. He tried to talk to his “ex friend” about it in lunch, gets punch in the face fights back while he got suspended his “friend” turn everyone against him (except his group of friends who support him) and got what he wanted. This made me mad that his ex friend wanted all the attention and popularity that his friend gotten even though it’s not his fault for it and wasn’t even leaving him out of anything.

Exactly, it's the fact that Colton reached out to communicate with Toby and instead of Toby communicating with him and talking things out since tension was rising between the both of them, he decided to instead be petty and bitter and do all those harsh things to Colton, and for what? In conclusion Toby is a bad friend.
@@otomeroid yeah and if the argument pops up saying Colton may not be receptive to listening to Toby’s feelings then it’s better that the friendship just ends on a neutral/positive note. It’s still many times better than what Toby chose to do in the end

I hate how he blames himself in the end. It’s not your fault at ALLL. His friend should’ve communicated his feelings first and how he felt about being “left out” instead of just rushing to unfriend you, seems like he was planning on dropping you anyways. That’s entirely on Toby and you tried to talk it out and communicate when he ain’t wanna hear it and it’s not your fault he had an injury, you had a game to play. A real friend would be happy for you. Anyways Toby sucks and you deserved better his jealousy got the better of him

Toby seemed really unappreciative because Colton actually went to check up on him as soon as he noticed problems were occurring. Most popular kids would never have the heart to do that.

Tobey is not a good friend. I understand wanting to be liked by people and why he was hurt about being second best to his best friend, but he shouldn't be mad or blame Colton for something that he had no control over.
And the fact Tobey got him suspended and turned the school against his former best friend when in reality it was his fault shows how shitty of a person he is.
