Of this show, it's Arthur's Big Hit Of the Simpsons, probably The Strong Arms of the Ma (Marge takes steroids and becomes a big strong bully) Of the Big Bang Theory, it's season 12 episode 18 (2 plagiarists try to steal Shamy's Nobel Prize. The plagiarists become popular while Sheldon and Amy become hated). Of Young Sheldon, it's season 6 episode 5 (Sheldon gets duct taped to a wall, Dale punches a man who was trying to stop them from breaking a law, and Mandy treats Georgie badly) Of Sabrina The Teenage Witch, I'd go with the one where Great Aunt Irma turns Aaron into a fish and Roxie and Morgan into cats. I hate season 7 (It has many flaws but the most obvious is no Hilda and Zelda) and I hate Great Aunt Irma and that episode combines both of those things. Of Goosebumps, it's Welcome to Camp Nightmare (an hour-long special about a camp, and at the end it's revealed that the whole camp was a practical joke, making that a wasted hour of my life) Of The Nightmare Room, it's School Spirit (A selfish ghost teacher murders kids who did nothing to do with him. The irony is that he calls them out for being selfish an unappreciative of teachers when he's the most selfish character in the episode) Of the Haunting Hour, probably I'm Not Martin (The hospital mistakenly takes a kid to chop off his foot, mistaking him for a kid named Martin whose foot was rotting). Of The Magic School Bus, probably the ant episode. Keesha was frustratingly slow to get the point. Of Wishbone, probably "A Tale of 2 Sitters." The episode that introduces Emily, who is that show's version of D.W. (bratty little sister who gets away with everything), except she's only in a few episodes and she's not a significant character like D.W. I think that covers every show where I've seen all the episodes.

While I don’t condon Arthur’s actions, this was kind of doomed to happen when you realize he’s practically the Meg Griffin of his own show. Yet the worst characters tell him off even though they are the biggest assholes in the show.
@@mattneff I really just hate butt monkey characters in general. It feels like the only one that works is Schmitzel from Chowder and maybe Squidward sometimes.
I can only conclude that this episode was Arthur lashing out at the wrong person after years of pent up frustration at dealing with people like DW and Francine

@@bennu547 well put. They bully each other all the time. When the time when muffy bully Francine by drawing pictures of her in the episode “draw!”. And Francine published an embarrassing article about her wearing some silly clothing with polka dots In The episode “Citizen Frensky” I should say to your point that those two are bullies and hypocrites.
It probably would have, if he had seen Arthur's apology before he sent it and demanded it be authentic. Or if he hadn't demand him write the apology, because all she wanted was for him to stop. Also the episode is like "stop bullying" but all he was, was annoying with a one-off joke. They should have spent a little more time with his perspective here -- people weren't shitting on him for once so he kept trying to be funny.
To be fair, I think what he did would've been fairly effective if Arthur was not being written very out of character, and to be more fair it seems like he isn't given any updates from the kids after telling Arthur to knock it off and write Sue Ellen an apology until the point where Sue Ellen asks to switch classrooms. (The photoshop event also was something that happened outside of school hours and thus not be in Ratburn's jurisdiction) I think If he had realized that the bullying was still going on, he easily would've gotten the Principal and/or Arthur's Parents involved in the whole thing. But to me it looks like the writers really wanted to bend over backwards to make Arthur come to the conclusion by himself and not because people were telling him the obvious.
The part where Francine shouts, "HEY GET OUT OF MY WAY, BUSTER!" always bugged the crap out of me - and it still does. Like... THERE'S PLENTY OF *FREAKING* ROOM TO SIMPLY *GO* *AROUND* *HIM*!!!!! Thankfully the moment is always salvaged by the fact that Buster simply laughs in her face.
To be fair, using natural wool doesn't require killing the animal. Sue Ellen is a vegetarian, not a vegan. Vegetarianism still allows for the use of non-lethal animal products.
@pheunithpsychic-watertype9881 most vegetarians are against factory farming as most corporations separate calves from their mother's too soon after birth or over milk to the point of blood and pus. But smaller farms usually allow the calves to remain with the mothers and milk the excess. It's more about where the products come from. Also we've actually bred cows that produce milk without babies. It just depends on how the animals are treated.
Francine is such a hypocrite in this episode: she’s the biggest bully in the entire series. His “friends” once again alienate him and unnecessarily demonize him just like they did when he punched DW. If they really thought he was in the wrong they should’ve talked to him on why it is rather than just shun him.
That’s seriously what I’ve been thinking. Arthur is supposed to be the neutral one of the show who has made some small mistakes but nothing anywhere near as severe as in this episode. Most of his friends like Muffy and mostly Francine have had more “bullying” instances and yet they’re mad that Arthur is being a bully despite Francine being 80% angry for most of the show???
I think there is an episode where D.W. supposably has laryngitis so of course can't talk; and in one part Arthur mentions to Francine that he is enjoying the piece and quiet in his house for once, little miss hypocrite then actually had ther nerve to tell him that he was “being mean” for saying that.
@@scarysara9364 You are in fact right. She calls him a hypocrite for being mean when she’s been mean to, not only Arthur, but multiple others. It’s also an FU DW when she took advantage of her illness, even after she was 100% better, just to treat Arthur like he’s a butler and do or help with whatever she wanted. I still don’t know why the writers made Arthur this way in “So Funny I Forgot to Laugh”. It would’ve worked better if it was character who is more of a bully. Like Francine, Muffy, the Tibbles, etc. I saw a comment where someone thinks it would’ve been better if the Tibbles were bullying Emily about a piece of clothing she got. A sweater from Paris maybe? Or something similar. I think that that would’ve worked MUCH better. Arthur has flaws and has made mistakes in the past but this one is probably the worst one. Everyone in the episode (minus Sue Ellen) is terrible. Arthur for obvious reasons. Francine, Muffy, and Buster just ignoring Arthur. Francine and Muffy being MAJOR hypocrites for calling Arthur a bully when their bully rap sheet is much longer than his. Mr. Ratburn doing very little to nothing. The whole episode is just one big mess.
Like I get that the show chose Arthur to be the bully in order to demonstrate how even stereotypically nice people can come off as insensitive, but if anything, they should have had Buster fill that role instead of Arthur in this episode, especially since Buster is already the class clown and always chasing after the next joke, so it would be completely in character for Buster to be the stereotypically nice guy who takes a joke too far.
I get what they were going for, how somebody's jokes can accidentally hurt someone's feelings... but for Arthur not to stop after Sue Ellen explains she's uncomfortable is the most out of character he's ever been. Even the Tough Customers wouldn't stoop that low. (They should have given him a World of Pain on her behalf). The comparison between the old and new episodes is crazy. This entire flash era was a huge downgrade...(Save for a few standout episodes here and there) Congrats on 25K!
i don't think the flash animation seasons were that bad, even if some episodes weren't recieved well and switching to flash is likely to make it easier to reach deadlines instead of being out of laziness and i don't think the characters are flanderized, i am pretty sure chracters get expanded past their usual roles like with dw and ratburn
@@channel45853 Kids deserve effort in their animation too. There's not much that changes the last few seasons of arthur from the awful web series for children. The lessons were shallow, the characters were obnoxious and there wasn't heart. The original animation style was fine.
@@EeveelutionStorm I never said they didn't, but animators are people too, and deadlines like that aren't apt for the type of animation the old style required.

Squirrel Jokes and Idiot Box will remain two of my favorite early SpongeBob episodes along with the Doodlebob episode (Don't remember the name). "NI YA HOY MINOY!" "ME SPONGEBOB, YOU DOODLEBOB!"

@@mattneff He deserves a better episode. I chalk this one up to the writing because everyone knows Arthur is not like this in most cases. Now, if he did it to someone who deserved it like Francine or D.W., we wouldn't blame him!
I legitimately can’t stand this episode, they wrote Arthur ridiculously out of character just for the sake of their plot when there are other characters like Muffy or Francine that would’ve made infinitely more sense
The problem with that is that you would expect it from them, and the lesson wouldn't work. I think that Buster could have been a good replacement instead.

It’s in character for him to both keep a joke running lost past the point where it’s funny and to lash out over a grudge; he also generally has less social awareness than Arthur, so a stronger argument could be made that he didn’t immediately realize he was going too far
@@enchantingkatie2 I am not arguing that it worked, I am just saying that I don't think using a character whom you would expect to be a bully would work on selling the message that anyone can become a bully, even accidentally, even people you don't expect.
I honestly feel like PBS sometimes forces trying to push a narrative a little too hard, especially when every episode of their shows are supposed to have a lesson.
He finally reviewed the episode after talking about it one time. This episode right here ladies and gentlemen is the flanderization of Arthur and everyone in this show. When a show goes for this long, everything becomes torn to bits.

@@mattneff Basically Arthur and Buster want this game and Arthur decides to sell some of his things, he lies about the condition of an action figure and sells it to James and refuses to give him a refund essentially scamming him (was also influenced into lying by Muffy)
Arthur could theoretically have another moment in “Dad’s Dessert Dilemma”. When the class wants to celebrate Galileo’s birthday, he tells the class his mom will bake chocolate chip cookies. When his mom says no, Mr. Reid says he’ll bake something for the class. It is a cake resembling the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Arthur worries everyone will hate his cake and even tries to hide it. Mr. Ratburn finds the cake, but it turns out he likes the cake. This prompts Arthur to get his dad to bake cakes for numerous minor events. This eventually causes him to forget about catering for Mr. Crosswire’s event, which Arthur realizes he was only asking his dad to make cakes to make him popular.
@@mattneff sort of, but he wasn't a full bully like he was in this episode. He was just a brat who felt like he had the right to order his father around.
The fact that Arthur became Arthur Winifred Read in this episode and was just as bad as DW and that’s saying something because she didn’t even appear a single time in this episode.
I thought Sue Ellen would hit Arthur, since she was ready to throw hands on Binky after he messed up her jump rope record. But… she has a crush on Arthur… this wasn’t just bullying. This was being crushed by the man (aardvark) that you’re hopelessly devoted to…. It hurts even more to think of it this way
This is exactly why I don't think this episode is canon... cause Sue Ellen was created by Marc Brown as a homeage to a little girl he had a crush on when he was the same age. I cannot imagine how the author felt hearing there was an episode created where the girl he loved so long ago was written as being abused by basically him. That's awful
Did.... did Arthur know she liked him? Because if so, combined with her being the most athletic character on the show who could destroy him if she wanted, as far as I'm concerned, the video maker is wrong. Francine, hypocrite or not, didn't go far enough in chewing Arthur out. DW should have joined Francine in letting Arthur know what's what.
If I remember Marc Brown said Sue Ellen is based off his childhood crush. And if Arthur is based off Marc Brown, why is he uncharacteristicly mean to her in this episode?
4:21 I watched this episode as a kid, but rewatching it hit deep because I used to have a toxic friend in high school, who acted just like how Arthur did in this episode. My last straw with him was when he made a joke where he unironically called me stupid. When I told him I was hurt by the joke, that's basically what he responded with. When I stopped talking to him, he basically said, "I apologized, I don't deserve to be cut off", you can see why I don't talk to him anymore. I've got much better friends now.
I hate this episode mostly because everyone's acting waaay out of character. Arthur as a bully is really not convincing - he has been the victim of bullying several times, plus he is established as kind, empathetic and fair. Sue Ellen is tougher than this. Her whole personality is based on standing up for herself and speaking up against social injustice and big corporations. She organized successful protests and petitions. She put Binky in his place on her first day. She chewed Muffy and Francine out for treating vegetarianism as a fad or dare. Now she wants to switch classes because one kid in class keeps repeating the same crappy joke that falls flat every single time? Not saying that the sheepdog joke was okay, of that tough kids can't be victims, but in this particular situation, Arthur doesn't really work as a bully, and Sue Ellen doesn't really work as a victim. Muffy and Francine are also infuriatingly hypocritical in this episode.
From Mr. Ratburn's explicit use of the phrase "no tolerance", I assume this (2013) episode was made to ride the then-surging tide of anti-bullying PSAs and the increasing adoption of ironically draconian "Zero Tolerance" bullying policies by schools and school districts. The no doubt relatively new writing staff either forgot that the show had already had several anti-bullying episodes, or they didn't care, hoping to demonstrate that Elwood has a modern and progressive school administration, or they were worried that failing to ride the wave would make it seem like they didn't care that everyone else was standing up to fight bullying. Ironically, taking the old anti-bullying episodes into account alongside this new Zero-Tolerance-Era one, it kind of paints a picture of a long-time bullying victim finally letting loose, only to be punished under the new, more severe, school anti-bullying policies while his long time bullies get to shame and ostracize him from their newfound moral high ground, with not just the _consent_ but the _encouragement_ of the school administration, which... is actually a _remarkably_ realistic outcome of Zero Tolerance policies, if the many, many stories I've heard are true, but is probably _not_ how the writers would want us interpreting the episode By the way, regarding Sue Ellen's yak sweater: 1. Sue Ellen is a vegetarian. All vegans are vegetarians, but not all vegetarians are vegans. 2. Sue Ellen's sweater is "yak wool", not "yak skin". "Wool" is acquired by _shaving_ a long-haired animal. Shearers actually avoid giving their animals even the smallest of non-lethal cuts, because blood stains easily and is difficult to clean, making any portion of wool with blood on it basically unsellable.
Damn. That's heavy. Want to know how I can make this even more tragic? This episode came out the same year as the 2013 adaptation of Carrie. And when you mentioned the idea of a bullying victim losing it, only to get penalized under harsher zero tolerance policies, while the longtime bullies get off Scott free, reminds me of the final graveyard scene, where Carrie was vilified while Chris and her cronies were mourned. And to think these two came out in fairly close proximity...
You should do another FU Arthur episode on the episode, Kidonia, where Arthur & his friends are sick & tired of doing chores, being bossed around, nagged by their parents & siblings & forced to keep their promises, Arthur and his friends agree to invent their own country: Kidonia, where there are no rules, no laws, and no chores. But, no surprise, it all comes crashing down!

Episodes after season 16 off the top of my head: -All Thumbs -Kidonia -When Duty Calls -Shelter from the Storm (Featuring Idina Menzel) -A remake of the season 13 episode, The Great McGrady -The Butler Did It -Arthur Takes a Stand (Featuring John Lewis a year or two before he passed) -Take a Hike Molly I probably couldn't tell you which seasons they all came from, but I at least remember them. I was in elementary school when Arthur switched to flash, but I still enjoyed an episode or two
I did watch the series finale on TH-cam, but what I really thought was weird is it wasn’t a 20-25 minute episode as it should count as a special. It was paired with an episode called blabber mouth that just reminds us Buster can’t keep a secret, which has already been shown in like 20 episodes.
I hate this episode! I don't think Arthur should have been the bully. Maybe Binky, Francine, or Muffy should have been. Francine and Muffy were absolute hypocrites in this episode, berating Arthur for what HE did. While he was a bully, if I recall correctly, there are some episodes where Francine or Muffy are wrong and they don't apologize, rendering their scoldings null and mute
THANK YOU!! That’s what I’ve been thinking as well. Both are drama queens who think highly of themselves and here they are berating Arthur for him doing something wrong when they’ve been doing crap for basically the whole series.
This is a HORRIBLE episode. Arthur being completely out of character is really irritating and it's really frustrating to watch. One thing I didn't like is when D.W. constantly annoyed Arthur, but yet ARTHUR is the one that got wrongfully punished for everything D.W. does to him.
@@FlickaLovaReturns Ikr. One episode comes to mind is “Arthur’s Big Hit”. Don’t get me wrong, it was wrong for Arthur to punch DW. But the whole episode was a crap fest. So Arthur has spent a long time making a plane model - a model that DW constantly touches and Arthur repeatedly tells her not to touch. And the model is finally completed, DW (in her dimwitted mind) threw the model out the window, much to Arthur’s horror. He inspects the damage while DW remarks how Arthur built it wrong and in a moment of rage, Arthur punches her. Arthur gets grounded for it, his friends turn against him, DW comments “You’re bad!”, and Binky reluctantly punches him (Due to the Tough Customers encouraging it) The Read parents were at their worst here. They didn’t verbally say it but they basically told Arthur “Serves you right”. They don’t even scold DW at all for invading Arthur’s privacy and even when they said they would, they never show it. Punching your younger sibling is never a choice, even if the younger sibling does something bad but with how DW seems to get away with almost everything, and Arthur gets punished, it’s just bad. The episode was so bad that I think Marc Brown himself regrets making the story that was adapted to an episode.
@@thewillofabeast9079 I can remember one episode where Arthur was being a jerk to Buster. Arthur's Snow Biz. He and Buster were constantly arguing and that is really irritating. That reminded me of the Dragon Tales episode where Max and Ord were fighting about who got to take the Whatyamacallit home first, and he hurt Ord's toe.

Seriously this was so out of character for Arthur I unironically felt more sorry for him in this episode. This shit was fucking evil. I know he was being forced to act like this.
Mr.Ratburn would’ve seen it coming when Arthur send Sue Ellen a picture of a sheepdog to Sue Ellen, and he would’ve Send Arthur to the Principal’s Office
And then, his parents would get involved with Arthur about what he did to Sue Ellen! Next, he would be Suspended from school for a month or so. Then, he would get Grounded at home and lose stuff like No Computer, No TV, No hanging out with Friends, No Bunny TV Show, No Being friends with Buster & Lots More
Then, Arthur would have A Parent Teacher Conference with his parents, teachers, and the principal and they would have a discussion of what they think Arthur’s Punishment should be. I think Arthur should get a 4 week Detention Every Morning & Every Night of class. Then, Arthur should write a 5,000 word essay on why he Bullied Sue Ellen by calling her a sheepdog. Next, he would not be in the class with Mr.Ratburn until further notice for his actions. Finally, he would not hang out with his friends Forever for what he did!
Ok seeing all the scenes with Buster being a "patrick" really makes me think that he should've been in Arthur's place instead. He has a natural lack of awareness so him not knowing when a joke isnt finny anymore would make total sense.... Wpuldnt fox the episode though because everyone would be hating him.instead of trying to help

My personal headcanon is that the "Arthur" in this episode wasn't Arthur at all, but actually DW in disguise! She knew that Sue Ellen had a crush on her brother, and she didn't want Arthur to have a chance of finding happiness or a possible escape from her, so she impersonated him to try and nip it in the bud.
I don't understand why Arthur was such a menace in this episode. Even if PBS wanted to air this rubbish, they could have used a more fitting character like Binky, or Francine. (But this would be too far for even Binky).

Another Arthur episode that has a good idea for a message, but pulls it off abysmally. I can see what they were trying to do- they were trying to convey that anyone can be a bully and not realise it, but Arthur was acting completely out of character here. They should have used someone like Francine or Muffy. If they really wanted to use Arthur, it should have stopped at Arthur being called out by Mr Ratburn, whereby he would have realised that what he said really hurt Sue Ellen and immediately apologised sincerely to her.

A handcrafted yak wool sweater can cost upwards hundreds of dollars. There's one online right now, baby yak, that's going for $1250. The fact he bullied her so much that she was willing to give it to charity...
I honestly always loved the episode Draw because I loved Fern and couldn't stand Francine in the earlier seasons. But I do like Francine realizes what she said about Fern was mean and got a taste of her own medicine while learning her lesson. Much better than "So sorry I forgot to laugh." Arthur again of all people should know what it's like to be bullied as he's bullied the most in the show even by his own friends at times. Even when Arthur is mean he feels bad and tries to make things right. He was completely out of character in the episode.
The first 9 minutes of All Grown up was Aurther, Francine, Buster, and Muffie going into the back of the library and finding a game that eventually tells everyone what they will be like in the future, only for the game to conveniently turn off before Aurther gets his revealed.
It really didn’t feel like one until the time jump happened. And even then theirs been other episodes showing possible futures for the Arthur gang. You truly realize it’s legit when the Arthur logo in the graphic novel and references the first episode
@@anchorsaway9500I still refuse to accept that finale as canon, considering how utterly anticlimactic that finale was with not nearly enough characters being addressed. (I pretty much consider season 20 or 21 to be the last canonical season for me.)
When I was younger I used to love petting my sister and calling her a good girl even rubbing her tummy. A few years later at youth group I saw this girl who I always referred to as a rabbit, always calling her a bunny, and even pet her a few times. I once even pulled up some grass and offered her a snack because rabbits like grass. I almost rubbed noses with her like a rabbit but was told not to by a youth group leader
D.W is so horrible she is the reason why Flash Animation was invented so all that to be done was “click and paste” instead of drawing her over and over again.
And Flash was already outdated by the time Arthur made the switch. The vast majority of Flash animations since 2010 have been short lived and/or poorly received. Only exceptions might be Friendship is Magic and shows like Gumball and Bojack that used it together with other applications.
Well done, Matt. And congratulations on 25K subscribers! I agree that this was the worst episode. While his behavior here does remind me of certain bullies I had in school, it's just too far out of character for Arthur. I like how you contrasted it with "Draw!" which is basically the same message done right. 11:44 - It's funny because there was a cartoon in the 2000's called "Franny's Feet". I never saw it, but this scene is all I could think of when I saw the title.
I excepted this kind of bullying behavior from Francine and Muffy, but Arthur? I like Arthur but he went WAY TOO FAR in this episode. And Francine and Muffy have ZERO room to talk when they have been bullies.
Honestly this episode could've worked if it were about the cycle of abuse: Arthur's not excusing his behavior because "it's just a joke" but because "I can take a joke so why can't she?" He sees nothing wrong with his behavior, not because he's a jerk who can't admit that he's wrong, but because _it's happened to him so much without anybody doing anything that he assumes that's just how "just joking around" works._
Honestly, it would've been better if it was aimed at someone who routinely excluded or mistreated Arthur before, but they already did this story with Francine and Muffy numerous times. Frig, they had a whole episode where Francine and Muffy started internet drama (and this was pre-flash season) where they ha a tumblr war

Of Goosebumps, it's Welcome to Camp Nightmare (an hour-long special about a camp, and at the end it's revealed that the whole camp was a practical joke, making that a wasted hour of my life)
Of The Nightmare Room, it's School Spirit (A selfish ghost teacher murders kids who did nothing to do with him. The irony is that he calls them out for being selfish an unappreciative of teachers when he's the most selfish character in the episode)
Of the Haunting Hour, probably I'm Not Martin (The hospital mistakenly takes a kid to chop off his foot, mistaking him for a kid named Martin whose foot was rotting).
Of The Magic School Bus, probably the ant episode. Keesha was frustratingly slow to get the point.
Of Wishbone, probably "A Tale of 2 Sitters." The episode that introduces Emily, who is that show's version of D.W. (bratty little sister who gets away with everything), except she's only in a few episodes and she's not a significant character like D.W.

Mr. Ratburn being ineffective at stopping bullying? Realistic, telling an adult rarely stops bullying.
It probably would have, if he had seen Arthur's apology before he sent it and demanded it be authentic.

Also the episode is like "stop bullying" but all he was, was annoying with a one-off joke.
They should have spent a little more time with his perspective here -- people weren't shitting on him for once so he kept trying to be funny.
Now if the bully victim got in trouble for fighting back. It'll be even more realistic.
To be fair, I think what he did would've been fairly effective if Arthur was not being written very out of character, and to be more fair it seems like he isn't given any updates from the kids after telling Arthur to knock it off and write Sue Ellen an apology until the point where Sue Ellen asks to switch classrooms. (The photoshop event also was something that happened outside of school hours and thus not be in Ratburn's jurisdiction)
I think If he had realized that the bullying was still going on, he easily would've gotten the Principal and/or Arthur's Parents involved in the whole thing. But to me it looks like the writers really wanted to bend over backwards to make Arthur come to the conclusion by himself and not because people were telling him the obvious.
As someone who was bullied growing up you are right. Hell, I had teachers who victim shamed me when I went to them for help.

But smaller farms usually allow the calves to remain with the mothers and milk the excess. It's more about where the products come from. Francine is such a hypocrite in this episode: she’s the biggest bully in the entire series.
His “friends” once again alienate him and unnecessarily demonize him just like they did when he punched DW. If they really thought he was in the wrong they should’ve talked to him on why it is rather than just shun him.
That’s seriously what I’ve been thinking. Arthur is supposed to be the neutral one of the show who has made some small mistakes but nothing anywhere near as severe as in this episode. Most of his friends like Muffy and mostly Francine have had more “bullying” instances and yet they’re mad that Arthur is being a bully despite Francine being 80% angry for most of the show???

I still don’t know why the writers made Arthur this way in “So Funny I Forgot to Laugh”. It would’ve worked better if it was character who is more of a bully. Like Francine, Muffy, the Tibbles, etc.
I saw a comment where someone thinks it would’ve been better if the Tibbles were bullying Emily about a piece of clothing she got. A sweater from Paris maybe? Or something similar. I think that that would’ve worked MUCH better.
Arthur has flaws and has made mistakes in the past but this one is probably the worst one. Everyone in the episode (minus Sue Ellen) is terrible. Arthur for obvious reasons. Francine, Muffy, and Buster just ignoring Arthur. Francine and Muffy being MAJOR hypocrites for calling Arthur a bully when their bully rap sheet is much longer than his. Mr. Ratburn doing very little to nothing. The whole episode is just one big mess.

Like I get that the show chose Arthur to be the bully in order to demonstrate how even stereotypically nice people can come off as insensitive, but if anything, they should have had Buster fill that role instead of Arthur in this episode, especially since Buster is already the class clown and always chasing after the next joke, so it would be completely in character for Buster to be the stereotypically nice guy who takes a joke too far.

I get what they were going for, how somebody's jokes can accidentally hurt someone's feelings... but for Arthur not to stop after Sue Ellen explains she's uncomfortable is the most out of character he's ever been. Even the Tough Customers wouldn't stoop that low. (They should have given him a World of Pain on her behalf).
The comparison between the old and new episodes is crazy. This entire flash era was a huge downgrade...(Save for a few standout episodes here and there) Congrats on 25K!

i don't think the flash animation seasons were that bad, even if some episodes weren't recieved well
and switching to flash is likely to make it easier to reach deadlines instead of being out of laziness and i don't think the characters are flanderized, i am pretty sure chracters get expanded past their usual roles like with dw and ratburn
@@channel45853 Kids deserve effort in their animation too. There's not much that changes the last few seasons of arthur from the awful web series for children. The lessons were shallow, the characters were obnoxious and there wasn't heart. The original animation style was fine.
To be honest the tough customers definitely would’ve stepped in because Binky does like Sue Ellen and thinks she’s cool.

@@mattneff Basically Arthur and Buster want this game and Arthur decides to sell some of his things, he lies about the condition of an action figure and sells it to James and refuses to give him a refund essentially scamming him (was also influenced into lying by Muffy)
Arthur could theoretically have another moment in “Dad’s Dessert Dilemma”.
When the class wants to celebrate Galileo’s birthday, he tells the class his mom will bake chocolate chip cookies. When his mom says no, Mr. Reid says he’ll bake something for the class. It is a cake resembling the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Arthur worries everyone will hate his cake and even tries to hide it. Mr. Ratburn finds the cake, but it turns out he likes the cake. This prompts Arthur to get his dad to bake cakes for numerous minor events. This eventually causes him to forget about catering for Mr. Crosswire’s event, which Arthur realizes he was only asking his dad to make cakes to make him popular.
And that's how Mr Ratburn first got his man-crush for Mr Read.

4:21 I watched this episode as a kid, but rewatching it hit deep because I used to have a toxic friend in high school, who acted just like how Arthur did in this episode. My last straw with him was when he made a joke where he unironically called me stupid. When I told him I was hurt by the joke, that's basically what he responded with. When I stopped talking to him, he basically said, "I apologized, I don't deserve to be cut off", you can see why I don't talk to him anymore. I've got much better friends now.
I find it weird that Arthur used the word “dog” as an insult when you realized dogs are people in this world. And also dogs
I hate this episode mostly because everyone's acting waaay out of character.
Arthur as a bully is really not convincing - he has been the victim of bullying several times, plus he is established as kind, empathetic and fair.
Sue Ellen is tougher than this. Her whole personality is based on standing up for herself and speaking up against social injustice and big corporations. She organized successful protests and petitions. She put Binky in his place on her first day. She chewed Muffy and Francine out for treating vegetarianism as a fad or dare. Now she wants to switch classes because one kid in class keeps repeating the same crappy joke that falls flat every single time? Not saying that the sheepdog joke was okay, of that tough kids can't be victims, but in this particular situation, Arthur doesn't really work as a bully, and Sue Ellen doesn't really work as a victim.
Muffy and Francine are also infuriatingly hypocritical in this episode.
Baffling choices all around.
From Mr. Ratburn's explicit use of the phrase "no tolerance", I assume this (2013) episode was made to ride the then-surging tide of anti-bullying PSAs and the increasing adoption of ironically draconian "Zero Tolerance" bullying policies by schools and school districts. The no doubt relatively new writing staff either forgot that the show had already had several anti-bullying episodes, or they didn't care, hoping to demonstrate that Elwood has a modern and progressive school administration, or they were worried that failing to ride the wave would make it seem like they didn't care that everyone else was standing up to fight bullying.
Ironically, taking the old anti-bullying episodes into account alongside this new Zero-Tolerance-Era one, it kind of paints a picture of a long-time bullying victim finally letting loose, only to be punished under the new, more severe, school anti-bullying policies while his long time bullies get to shame and ostracize him from their newfound moral high ground, with not just the _consent_ but the _encouragement_ of the school administration, which... is actually a _remarkably_ realistic outcome of Zero Tolerance policies, if the many, many stories I've heard are true, but is probably _not_ how the writers would want us interpreting the episode
By the way, regarding Sue Ellen's yak sweater: 1. Sue Ellen is a vegetarian. All vegans are vegetarians, but not all vegetarians are vegans.
2. Sue Ellen's sweater is "yak wool", not "yak skin". "Wool" is acquired by _shaving_ a long-haired animal. Shearers actually avoid giving their animals even the smallest of non-lethal cuts, because blood stains easily and is difficult to clean, making any portion of wool with blood on it basically unsellable.

Want to know how I can make this even more tragic? This episode came out the same year as the 2013 adaptation of Carrie. And when you mentioned the idea of a bullying victim losing it, only to get penalized under harsher zero tolerance policies, while the longtime bullies get off Scott free, reminds me of the final graveyard scene, where Carrie was vilified while Chris and her cronies were mourned.
And to think these two came out in fairly close proximity...

I did watch the series finale on TH-cam, but what I really thought was weird is it wasn’t a 20-25 minute episode as it should count as a special. It was paired with an episode called blabber mouth that just reminds us Buster can’t keep a secret, which has already been shown in like 20 episodes.
I hate this episode! I don't think Arthur should have been the bully. Maybe Binky, Francine, or Muffy should have been. Francine and Muffy were absolute hypocrites in this episode, berating Arthur for what HE did. While he was a bully, if I recall correctly, there are some episodes where Francine or Muffy are wrong and they don't apologize, rendering their scoldings null and mute
THANK YOU!! That’s what I’ve been thinking as well. Both are drama queens who think highly of themselves and here they are berating Arthur for him doing something wrong when they’ve been doing crap for basically the whole series.
This is a HORRIBLE episode. Arthur being completely out of character is really irritating and it's really frustrating to watch. One thing I didn't like is when D.W. constantly annoyed Arthur, but yet ARTHUR is the one that got wrongfully punished for everything D.W. does to him.
@@FlickaLovaReturns Ikr. One episode comes to mind is “Arthur’s Big Hit”. Don’t get me wrong, it was wrong for Arthur to punch DW. But the whole episode was a crap fest. So Arthur has spent a long time making a plane model - a model that DW constantly touches and Arthur repeatedly tells her not to touch. And the model is finally completed, DW (in her dimwitted mind) threw the model out the window, much to Arthur’s horror. He inspects the damage while DW remarks how Arthur built it wrong and in a moment of rage, Arthur punches her. Arthur gets grounded for it, his friends turn against him, DW comments “You’re bad!”, and Binky reluctantly punches him (Due to the Tough Customers encouraging it)
The Read parents were at their worst here. They didn’t verbally say it but they basically told Arthur “Serves you right”. They don’t even scold DW at all for invading Arthur’s privacy and even when they said they would, they never show it. Punching your younger sibling is never a choice, even if the younger sibling does something bad but with how DW seems to get away with almost everything, and Arthur gets punished, it’s just bad.
The episode was so bad that I think Marc Brown himself regrets making the story that was adapted to an episode.
@@thewillofabeast9079 I can remember one episode where Arthur was being a jerk to Buster. Arthur's Snow Biz. He and Buster were constantly arguing and that is really irritating. That reminded me of the Dragon Tales episode where Max and Ord were fighting about who got to take the Whatyamacallit home first, and he hurt Ord's toe.

Arthur was a bully to Sue Ellen
Mr.Ratburn would’ve seen it coming when Arthur send Sue Ellen a picture of a sheepdog to Sue Ellen, and he would’ve Send Arthur to the Principal’s Office
And then, his parents would get involved with Arthur about what he did to Sue Ellen! Next, he would be Suspended from school for a month or so. Then, he would get Grounded at home and lose stuff like No Computer, No TV, No hanging out with Friends, No Bunny TV Show, No Being friends with Buster & Lots More
Then, Arthur would have A Parent Teacher Conference with his parents, teachers, and the principal and they would have a discussion of what they think Arthur’s Punishment should be.
I think Arthur should get a 4 week Detention Every Morning & Every Night of class. Then, Arthur should write a 5,000 word essay on why he Bullied Sue Ellen by calling her a sheepdog. Next, he would not be in the class with Mr.Ratburn until further notice for his actions. Finally, he would not hang out with his friends Forever for what he did!

My personal headcanon is that the "Arthur" in this episode wasn't Arthur at all, but actually DW in disguise! She knew that Sue Ellen had a crush on her brother, and she didn't want Arthur to have a chance of finding happiness or a possible escape from her, so she impersonated him to try and nip it in the bud.
But that’s just a theory. An ANIMATION THEORY.
Man, I miss the old Arthur, back when the show didn't look like it was animated in Flash.
I don't understand why Arthur was such a menace in this episode. Even if PBS wanted to air this rubbish, they could have used a more fitting character like Binky, or Francine. (But this would be too far for even Binky).
Yeah, at this point, Binky was a different guy. We've seen so much of the softer side of him it would've been harder
They wouldn't fit as they are expected to be bullies so the lesson wouldn't work as good.
Maybe Buster could take the place of Arthur in this episode.

Another Arthur episode that has a good idea for a message, but pulls it off abysmally. I can see what they were trying to do- they were trying to convey that anyone can be a bully and not realise it, but Arthur was acting completely out of character here. They should have used someone like Francine or Muffy. If they really wanted to use Arthur, it should have stopped at Arthur being called out by Mr Ratburn, whereby he would have realised that what he said really hurt Sue Ellen and immediately apologised sincerely to her.

I honestly always loved the episode Draw because I loved Fern and couldn't stand Francine in the earlier seasons. But I do like Francine realizes what she said about Fern was mean and got a taste of her own medicine while learning her lesson. Much better than "So sorry I forgot to laugh." Arthur again of all people should know what it's like to be bullied as he's bullied the most in the show even by his own friends at times. Even when Arthur is mean he feels bad and tries to make things right. He was completely out of character in the episode.
Draw is a WAY better episode. Plus it is nice to see the introvert get some revenge

The first 9 minutes of All Grown up was Aurther, Francine, Buster, and Muffie going into the back of the library and finding a game that eventually tells everyone what they will be like in the future, only for the game to conveniently turn off before Aurther gets his revealed.

It really didn’t feel like one until the time jump happened. And even then theirs been other episodes showing possible futures for the Arthur gang. You truly realize it’s legit when the Arthur logo in the graphic novel and references the first episode
@@anchorsaway9500I still refuse to accept that finale as canon, considering how utterly anticlimactic that finale was with not nearly enough characters being addressed. (I pretty much consider season 20 or 21 to be the last canonical season for me.)
When I was younger I used to love petting my sister and calling her a good girl even rubbing her tummy. A few years later at youth group I saw this girl who I always referred to as a rabbit, always calling her a bunny, and even pet her a few times. I once even pulled up some grass and offered her a snack because rabbits like grass. I almost rubbed noses with her like a rabbit but was told not to by a youth group leader

The funny thing is that as a kid I was bullied by someone named Arthur.
It was a dark time.
D.W is so horrible she is the reason why Flash Animation was invented so all that to be done was “click and paste” instead of drawing her over and over again.
And Flash was already outdated by the time Arthur made the switch. The vast majority of Flash animations since 2010 have been short lived and/or poorly received. Only exceptions might be Friendship is Magic and shows like Gumball and Bojack that used it together with other applications.

While his behavior here does remind me of certain bullies I had in school, it's just too far out of character for Arthur. I like how you contrasted it with "Draw!" which is basically the same message done right.
11:44 - It's funny because there was a cartoon in the 2000's called "Franny's Feet". I never saw it, but this scene is all I could think of when I saw the title.
I excepted this kind of bullying behavior from Francine and Muffy, but Arthur? I like Arthur but he went WAY TOO FAR in this episode. And Francine and Muffy have ZERO room to talk when they have been bullies.

Honestly this episode could've worked if it were about the cycle of abuse: Arthur's not excusing his behavior because "it's just a joke" but because "I can take a joke so why can't she?" He sees nothing wrong with his behavior, not because he's a jerk who can't admit that he's wrong, but because _it's happened to him so much without anybody doing anything that he assumes that's just how "just joking around" works._

Honestly, it would've been better if it was aimed at someone who routinely excluded or mistreated Arthur before, but they already did this story with Francine and Muffy numerous times. Frig, they had a whole episode where Francine and Muffy started internet drama (and this was pre-flash season) where they ha a tumblr war
