By far their most accomplished work. It takes all the qualities of their previous work and roles it into, as you say, a masterpiece. Rosemary is just a beautiful, dreamy mix of heavy and melodic transitions a very distinct hallmark Deftones sound and I like to think it is, in a way, a heartfelt tribute to Chi...
Cherry Waves and Entombed give me freaking chills to this day. The chorus to Entombed had my body covered in goosebumps an hour ago. Makes me feel like I'm on a dark beach or something lol
Entombed is one of their most feelz songs ever. I love the flawless fade from Gauze to Rosemary to Goon Squad, definitely their smoothest transition recorded.
Excellent review! Koi No Yokan is a masterpiece. As a guitar player, I can attest that it's probably the most fun album to play through as well, along with Diamond Eyes. Stef Carpenter really shined on this one.
Hmm I think there's few stand outs but from a Djent stand point or their previous works it's sort of monotonous, but that's only because you need the backing tracks. I'm only talking about Koi, Diamond Eyes has some great riffs from Steph. I feel like I have to be on Stephs level of high if I want to play Koi sometimes lmao. I probably learned all of Koi on my 8 string extremely stoned so now playing it sober years later, it's a bit boring in comparison lol. It's still my favorite Deftones album apart from White Pony and Self-Titled.
are you seriously saying the riffs are more fun than on adrenaline or even around the fur?.... gtfoh.... but the album is one of their great ones (they have 3)
To me, this is the Radiohead in rainbows for deftones in regards to this record. One of my all time favorites. Around this time when the album was released, chi cheng the bassist passed away. So anytime I listen to ‘entombed’, I always felt it was a dedication to Chi to some degree.
I started my deftones journey with the diamond eyes album and then after going through all of the albums. This one. This beautiful album was by far what blew me away the most. I loved the flow of all the songs just intertwined into one another. Leathers, Gauze, and What happened to you are my top favorites on this track. Saturday night Wrists Rats Rats Rats is also my favorite track by deftones in general
Koi was my first, I wasn't sure how to feel about it until leathers scared the shit out of me with how it just explodes after that droney bit. Now it's tied with diamond eyes for my favorite album of theirs.
Koi No Yokan is one of my favorite Deftones albums by far, and even one of my favorite albums of all time. They made such a huge change in sound, yet it sounds so good. Definitely a 10/10 in my opinion
This one has the perfect blend of heavy aggression with the atmospheric and melodic elements. I believe Koi No Yokan is Japanese for "Love at first sight" and it shows through on this record. You can tell the attention to detail as all of the songs flow together so seamlessly with the synth elements. It also features Chino's best vocal work in my opinion. This one is my personal favorite. Thank you for reviewing this one.
Nice video, as always! ^^ Koi No Yokan is one of the most experimental Deftones albums and I think it has some of their best songs (Entombed makes my heart melt every single time I hear it), it's been so cool seeing how you enjoyed your first listen. About the lyrics, in a classic Deftones fashion they are mostly abstract and obscure, and most of the time they don't tell an actual story, but a common theme in Koi No Yokan is love, everything sounds so romantic (even the title means something like "premonition of love", like when you see someone for the first time and you know you're gonna fall in love with them sooner or later). Now I can't wait for the last two Deftones reactions! You left some of their more interesting albums for last. Diamond Eyes has a similar vibe to this one, I've always seen it as a heavier, less complex and more accessible version of the Koi No Yokan style, and it's just great! Saturday Night Wrist, on the other hand, is THE most experimental album Deftones ever made, and the only word I can find to describe it is "dreamy": yes, even dreamier than KNY, you'll see for yourself ;) So, whichever you choose next, I can't wait to hear what you think ^^
Love how you caught their infusion of the more spacey/synth sound that this album has. I find that the start of this direction in their sound was with Saturday Night Wrist. With SNW, you’ll hear them pushing themselves into more experimental territories with song structures, mood, and atmosphere. I hope you do that one next and then Diamond Eyes after. After that, all you have left is their B-sides and Rarities album which would be a nice bookend to your deftones journey. You’ll hear some great b-sides, acoustic versions, and covers that will give you a better sense of who they are as a band. Love your videos! Keep it up :)
Self-Titled is super heavy but it's got some of those ethereal ambience in some tracks, it's just mixed really low. I think this album is where Frank really started to stand out with his sampling and synth, it's just that Terry Dates mixed the goddamn sounds too low. Personally I think this is where they started, especially with Minerva being a prime example
Another solid review. Koi No Yokan is one of those albums that I often forget about but whenever I listen to it I'm always blown away. It's the 2nd album with their new bassist Sergio and he really fits in here, especially with Stefan's guitar playing. Tempest is my favorite song from this album too. Thank you for going on this journey through the Deftones' albums. Your reactions are refreshing, keep up the great content! Can't wait for you to hear "Rocket Skates" from Diamond Eyes.
Love the reaction & great review! Definitely their most atmospheric album imo, Frank really shines here in a much more grand & theatrical way, this album just sounds HUGE
This album perfectly mixes Deftones softer, atmospheric sounds with the agressive driving guitars. The background electronics and distortion provide the darkness. My favourite transition is between Rosemary and Goon Squad, that melodic flow for over 1 minute while the song builds. Another great review Molly! Ps... Can't wait to check out your Christopher Nolan rankings, my daughter and I are currently watching his all his movies this summer. So far The Prestige and Dunkirk are the top 2.
Yes! I was waiting for this! Thanks for letting the tracks transition. I didn't know if you'd seen my comment, lol. This is my favorite Deftones album (but not by much). The stand out songs are all great but the other songs have amazing moments and catchy parts that grow on you after a couple listens. It's a well-crafted album.
Absolutely fantastic review and your thoughts were spot on. You've done a better analysis more than 98% of professional critics. This album is beautiful and at times somewhat emotional. You picked up on the most slight of alterations and many of the moods and vibes the songs give. 10/10 to you ma'am. You shouldn't ever stop or slow down. You put other reviews to shame.
Wow, this comment is much appreciated! A lot of times I feel like I'm saying pretty obvious stuff in these reactions, so it's great knowing that people are getting something out of them. Thanks for the encouragement! :)
@@mollyesanborn I'm blown away by your reviews. I also recommend checking the album Vheissu by the band Thrice. They are friends with Deftones and the singer has referenced Chino as a big inspiration despite the two bands sounding very different. They both experiment and evolve a lot though and Vheissu gets very rich and atmospheric. Oh and this is my favorite Deftones album and you nailed it. Watching all your reviews!!
After Leathers, it was so easy to just assume it would be nothing short of a fantastic album. The production and flow was phenomenal on this one. "Going in another direction and doing it pretty well" Yep. Nailed it again on this one :). Freaking love this album.
I gotta admit, this one took a little while to grow on me, but I like it a lot now. That being said, when I first heard 'Tempest' I remember feeling goosebumps and that sentiment we all (or at least I do) crave in new music. Something so unbelievably good that makes you fall in love INSTANTLY.
Love your Deftones reactions! Don’t forget, they have two “miscellaneous” type albums, B-Sides and Rarities and Covers. The aforementioned has several of the same tracks as the Covers album but both very much worth checking out once you have completed the proper albums! Thanks for the vids!!!
I think this video came out before I found your channel. This album is tied with "Ohms" as my favorite two Deftones albums, and "Koi" is one of the finest rock albums ever made. Giving it another listen today.
I became a fan in 2008 and had no idea if they would make further albums. I remember really liking Diamond Eyes in 2010 but I also remember falling in love with Koi No Yokan in 2012 :)
Great impression video. I started with White Pony and the newer albums lack a bit of the heavier, grittier side but hearing it cut down makes me realize that this is a good album. Can’t wait to hear your opinion on Saturday Night Wrist. It was my third album and it has some interesting things on it. Keep up the good work, Molly. I enjoy your listening sessions.
Love your reactions to deftones Molly, waiting on the last albums, I hope you like them, This album is a great masterfull piece, good taste, legendary songs, have a great day, keep on the good work
I feel like Gore gets a bad rap. That album grew on me. I love all their albums but Koi No Yokan is a Masterpiece. Ohms did not disappoint. Amazing album. You did a great review btw.
I agree. Koi No Yokan is my personal favorite Deftones album, but I really like Gore a lot as well. Maybe not top 3 per se, but still vastly underrated.
on "what happened to you" 's lack of a transition and strange send off to the album, i -and others in the community- have believed that the track was written about and dedicated to chi cheng, as KNY released during his long-term coma and in a period when the band was unsure of his survival. i don't know if the band's ever commented on this song though, so just a theory.
I knew Leathers could end up being your favorite song. You picked an amazing album to react to. You may benefit from 221 more listens, then move on to Diamond Eyes and Ohms, of course. Good luck on your Deftones journey. I am 30 years into mine...
Before watching this review, this album and Diamond Eyes, just brought back a lot of the super excitement for Deftones for me. To this day, these two albums probably get the most use, and I'm digging Ohms currently as well. Their first 3 albums got so much play for me, that these latest 3 albums mentioned just still feel more new and I'm loving them, even if they're like over a decade old now haha Excited to hear this one from you
Always love your deftones reviews! Got tearful hearing each song play in the background cause of how I feel about them now compared to the first time hearing em. Keep up the good work! Can't wait for your Diamond Eyes review! Probably one of my most favorite albums along with koi no yokan

1. koi no yokan 2. diamond eyes 3. saturday night wrist 4. gore 5. adrenaline 6. white pony 7. around the fur 8. deftones 9. ohms. my personal album ranking for deftones :p
Yeah, Koi No Yokan is a masterpiece of an album! It really transports you while listening to it, they created such a great atmosphere with this one. I've actually done reaction/review videos like this one to all of their albums, hope you enjoy watching the rest! :)
@@mollyesanborn nice! good to see people still entranced by them after 9 albums. definitely a band with a sound of their own. headphones at work, so i start with koi, and end with whatever the shuffle allows deftones wise… a band that meshes heavy rock, with sexy vocals and trances with the drums… hope they give more in yrs to come…
Cheack out Every Time I Die album Radical. Latest and last… great swan song of album. Heavy riffs great drums and just tight over all with great lyrics and nice variety in the vein of metal. Think would like or at least appreciate. Great catalog overall spanning back 25 yrs
If you like Deftones, you should react to “Chevelle” if you havnt heard them before. “Wonder whats next” their breakout platinum album or their newest “Niratias” album would be good albums to start!
I was just listening to "Gauze" this morning and it for some really strange reason reminded me of the first time I heard this album. It was late 2012 when it came out, and I was in the emergency room waiting to be treated for Benzodiazapene Withdrawal Syndrome. This is NOT something any of you ever want to experience, and it can be fatal; my advantage was that I got there early before it could progress to any dangerous stage. I'm doing okay these days; don't want people to worry; the point I'm making is that as trippy as this album is, it's FAR more trippy when you're in that altered mental state. Not in a good way.
What a journey! KNY has the lowest-tuned guitars, rivalling only the likes of Diamond Eyes in terms of chunkiness in their discog imo. You're gonna love the energy on SNW and Diamond eyes, thank you for sharing your first time listen
What Happened to You... has to be one of my favorites from this album. Aside from the killer drum arrangement, when the final chorus kicks off, the strings just blow me away with the harmonics. This dude does a good cover of what I'm talkin about... it's just so damn good. th-cam.com/video/vTSWvLyOKGM/w-d-xo.html
Hey I just discovered your channel through the Sunbather video, you should definitely check out Ecailles de Lune by Alcest, I'm sure you would love this album ! (also thumbs up for the Skyrim CD on the shelf)
Deftones are one of my fovorites. There is one band called Murder City Devils that does not get enough attention. Maybe you can have a listen to them and see where that takes you. Not on the same level but same intensity and they use an organ.
I vote Saturday Night Wrist next for another album that’s completely different from the rest. But Diamond Eyes might be their best work for the simple fact that it’s creative and it sounds unmistakably like a Deftones album. They really stand out
no transition from rosemary to goon squad? Not only is there definitely a transition, I think its the best transition on the whole album between the two songs. I like how goon squad starts with the ambience from rosemary. When i first heard the album i thought rosemary was still playing but goon squad was on. I cant listen to just one of them i have to listen to both together.
@@mollyesanborn the good thing with your ranking them, is the albums are all sort of new to you. Give it about a year or so, so you get a good feel of each album. I feel like it'd be hard for me to rank them because the early albums I played so so so much and almost don't listen to them much now because of more current ones I'm loving. So I couldn't do the early ones justice. But your e-buds are newer to all of the albums, to give a truer honest ranking.
Nice review! SNW to me along with Gore are the least good albums from Deftones not for the songs but for the order of the tracks on the album... IDK is weird... In the other hand, Diamond Eyes is amazing!! to me is like the older brother of Koi No Yokan and is like a White Pony 2.0, is so different and AWESOME! Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Definitely leave a comment about anything you want me to do a reaction to! I read all the comments and any artists/albums/movies people recommend I write down... it's getting pretty long, haha!
Just found your channel, and seeing the bands you react to, you must check out Failure. FAILURE's "Fantastic Planet" is a Must! You've done Hum(a band of peers of Failure), you've done Deftones(a band that's influenced by Failure), and Tool(a band of peers, and having toured with Failure). Failure is a Must, also, check out their album, "The Heart is a Monster", and their last two albums(since reforming), "In the Future Your Body Will Be The Furthest Thing From Your Mind", and even their newest album, "Wild Type Droid". Failure is just a fantastic band, you will be happy you've listened.
No synths on entombed besides maybe a sample sound ( and ending ), the guitars are just very washed out, check out Slowdive Souvlaki album if you want similar sound to entombed. Lots of shoegaze music does that kind of sound My Bloody Valentine - Loveless would be best indication of this sound. It's the kind of sound where the guitars sound like synths cus they are so washed out in pedals and effects. Deftones is rly inspired by shoegaze music specialy MBV. Also if you want similar band to Deftones check out Hum - Downward is Heavenward one of the best space rock/ atmospheric records ever. Deftones took inspiration from Hum album cover on You'd prefer an astronaut for White Poney. Deftones biggest inspiration in sound to me is Hum.
Rosemary. One of the best deftones tracks ever.
Agreed.
Thee best.
Rosemary is great, but it’s hella overhyped imo. It just doesn’t strike me as much as it seems to strike others.

I *might* give the slight edge to Diamond Eyes…but not by much.
Poltergeist and Rosemary are two all time favorites.

@@mollyesanborn Didn't know how else to tell you but... You Gotta Also Review Some "Thousand Foot Krutch" just listened to best rock 2003 and a Song Called "Rawkfist" was on the playlist on Spotify and I went to the Album "Phenomenon" and I love them as well!! Check it out 💯 👊🏾 🤘🏾🤟🏾✌🏾️🎸🥁✨

Molly is a heartthrob.
What a beautiful review, this is the album of my life. and the only tattoo I have on my body "koi no yokan"
I always search for Molly’s reactions and then I realize why aren’t I subscribed? Now I am.
Thank you! :D
Goon Squad , Rosemary, tempest, entombed - best tracks! This and “diamond eyes” are my favourite albums, of course I love their whole discography 🤘
Like your views on this album. My favorite of their catalog…. Could talk deftones all day …. Look foreard to rest of deftones album reviews. Godspeed
Great catalog overall spanning back 25 yrs
the best deftone´s album so far
One of my favorites. I've got a tattoo for this one
Thanks sweety. It's impossible to pick a favorite album. But for me it's between Diamond and Koi.
If you like Deftones, you should react to “Chevelle” if you havnt heard them before. “Wonder whats next” their breakout platinum album or their newest “Niratias” album would be good albums to start!
I've heard their newest album NIRATIAS and really liked it, I will have to give the rest of their stuff a listen!

Pleassse
This girl refrencing deftones songs to each other making me blush and shi
Hell yeah nothing i look forward to more then a Molly Deftones reaction. 🤘🏼🔥
The one track that really grew on me is "Romantic Dreams", the transitions are perfect.
Amo este álbum ❤️
Entombed conjures up the short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe for me.
Molly, I have to warn you about a song on Saturday Night Wrist called Pink Cellphone that...uh, well, you'll see.
Well that intrigues me... I know to expect just about anything with Deftones though, so it'll be a nice surprise!
Shhhh
Oh you should totally do “Faith” by The Cure!
Rosemary is my favorite song by deftones. the album KNY is my favorite overall
That makes me excited for Diamond Eyes, I love that added chunkiness to their sound.
fastest like ever :) ... AMAZING WORK MOLLY :) .., TNKS !!! ... YOU HAVE TO CHECK TEAM SLEEP :) ... keep the Amazing work :) ...
Thanks! :) Team Sleep is on my list of artists to listen to.
@@mollyesanborn SUPERV !!! :) ... tnks looooveeee team sleep :)
I appreciate your channel ma. It ain't my favorite album by them but I fuck with it. Goon Squad is my shit!
Goon Squad is a great track!
Dtones are awesome and this one is gorgeous
Hey I just discovered your channel through the Sunbather video, you should definitely check out Ecailles de Lune by Alcest, I'm sure you would love this album ! (also thumbs up for the Skyrim CD on the shelf)
Welcome to the channel, and thanks for the suggestion!
Deftones are one of my fovorites. There is one band called Murder City Devils that does not get enough attention. Maybe you can have a listen to them and see where that takes you. Not on the same level but same intensity and they use an organ.
Finally!!!
this album makes me want to cry, its so fucking good
From the start ❤️
I love entombed to death along with swerve city i think those two are landmark titles
Also
Rosemary
I vote Saturday Night Wrist next for another album that’s completely different from the rest. But Diamond Eyes might be their best work for the simple fact that it’s creative and it sounds unmistakably like a Deftones album. They really stand out
no transition from rosemary to goon squad? Not only is there definitely a transition, I think its the best transition on the whole album between the two songs. I like how goon squad starts with the ambience from rosemary. When i first heard the album i thought rosemary was still playing but goon squad was on. I cant listen to just one of them i have to listen to both together.
What happened to the SnW album winning the poll? Lol.
Great review as always. Loved this album and its dreamy vibes.
I had already picked Koi No Yokan to react to next, the poll was just to see which album people thought my pick would be. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@mollyesanborn oh you tricked us :)
What's the next album for Deftones and your channel?
Honestly I'm not sure yet, I might just make it a surprise!
@@mollyesanborn I suggest doing SNW 1st and save Diamond Eyes for the last.
You need to do the first Coheed & Cambria album, it will blow you away
You’re favorite tracks are my favorite tracks
I often think about how they have been described as Meshuggah meets My Bloody Valentine
If you like Deftones you would also like this modern band named Narrow Head. Check out their albums Satisfaction and 12th House Rock.
Poltergeist is my favourite
You should do a review on the album “language” by The Contortionist
Great album. I still prefer Exoplanet and Intrinsic tho.
I'm curious to see, once you've listened through all their albums. How you'd rank them
Oh man, what a task that would be! I might have to consider a Deftones ranking video though, after I've listened to all of their albums.
@@mollyesanborn don't forget B sides and Rarities
@@mollyesanborn the good thing with your ranking them, is the albums are all sort of new to you. Give it about a year or so, so you get a good feel of each album. I feel like it'd be hard for me to rank them because the early albums I played so so so much and almost don't listen to them much now because of more current ones I'm loving. So I couldn't do the early ones justice. But your e-buds are newer to all of the albums, to give a truer honest ranking.
Rosemary is lovely heavy
lovely heavy, I love that description. It fits Rosemary's vibe perfectly.
If Diamond Eyes is a crossover of Koi No Yokan and White Pony I'm going to love it!
M O L L Y ‼️🌟✨🌟‼️ do you do reaction requests?
Definitely leave a comment about anything you want me to do a reaction to! I read all the comments and any artists/albums/movies people recommend I write down... it's getting pretty long, haha!
@@mollyesanborn Are you able to react to The World's Scariest Drum Cover ? 🤔
I fell in love
No synths on entombed besides maybe a sample sound ( and ending ), the guitars are just very washed out, check out Slowdive Souvlaki album if you want similar sound to entombed. Lots of shoegaze music does that kind of sound My Bloody Valentine - Loveless would be best indication of this sound.
It's the kind of sound where the guitars sound like synths cus they are so washed out in pedals and effects.
Deftones is rly inspired by shoegaze music specialy MBV. Also if you want similar band to Deftones check out
Hum - Downward is Heavenward one of the best space rock/ atmospheric records ever. Deftones took inspiration from Hum album cover on You'd prefer an astronaut for White Poney. Deftones biggest inspiration in sound to me is Hum.
Oh, cool! Totally sounded like synths. Thanks for the recommendations, I'll have to check them out!
