For this fishery you should use a real carp-landingnet. With the net you are using, a 20-30 pound carp will make you a real problem. I use a 50 inch carp-landingnet and I'm glad I have it. I can land a 50-60 pounder without problem. Although my fishing is 80-90% for carp, I also flyfish for trout and grayling. Surely will try carp on the fly. Great video guys. Please more of this. Just started its winter here, fish in river blind fishing till spring slow but a great time several 2 to e lbs great informative video thanks tight lines
I love this. look past the fact they are carp and this is some amazing fishing. people in Ontario overlook this amazing fishing, nothing like sight fishing moster fish that fight like fresh salmon
Just curious, what's your typical leader formula for this setup? I normally fish streamers on a sinking line, thinking about getting into carp fishing and never really tried streamers on a floating line. Could you catch them on a sinking line? Or maybe that causes the fly to sink too low for them?
ive been targeting carp on the fly these past few weeks and I've got a few of them to bite but for some reason all of the get off after a few seconds? I've tried stripping before setting the hook like you said but they still keep on getting off. do you have any other tips for setting the hook on these fish? or should i maybe use a fluorocarbon leader to prevent line stretch?
If you are strip setting, then it should work. We do like to use stiff mono which has little stretch for carp as well. The other option is to use flies that are tied upside down, hook up. Many small crayfish patterns i tied like this and they work very well for carp
im from around montreal and i fly fish sturgeon on a 12 wt with crawfish patterns, my pb is about 70 pounds and its crazy fights you should try that instead of carp
you could but it might not be good for the fish. it would take longer to fight the fish to hand and release it. the excessive lactic acid build up, especially in warm water, would kill the carp
Carp can be rather powerful fish a 4wt wouldn't really be very ethical even for 5 lbs carp. For carp I'd use at least a 6wt, preferably an 8wt or 9wt especially if there's a chance for bigger ones.
Stropix, if you find that your rod is locking up with the the size fish you are catching then you should step up to a 6 or 7w to avoid mouth damage. With regard to a protracted fight if given proper recovery time before release the fish should be fine.
these are wild fish that receive almost zero pressure that's why you can do this. most places in the great lakes you can do this, very few people fish for them
I love when people say beautiful fish or good fish when they catch carp. I think saying something more like chubby Fish or gross fish would be more accurate
hello friends back here in alberta we have an invasive species of prussian carp. at the moment we catch them with rod and reel with maggots, corn and various dough baits. i have heard that they can be caught on fly rod too but haven't had much luck yet. i have only tried with really small chronos. what flies would you suggest? are they fairly similar to the common carp or grass carp?
What is with the rotten landing net? You are using some of the best (most expensive) fly rods available and yet you don't have a (fairly inexpensive) fish friendly net. The open knotted pool cleaning net that is being used causes damage to scales, fins and gill covers! Fish care please Orvis.
Those of us who fish everyday tend to take care of our skin. Totally understandable how if you only get one day off a week you wouldn't care as much. Chase that paycheck sucker.
Once you hook a 30-40 pound carp you will understand a 4# is by far not enough. Here in Europe we catch carp up to 70-80 pound carp. Not on the fly but special gear (carprods with 3 to 3.5 lbs testcurve).
Good to see Larry Bird teaches fly fishing now
Totally! Or his twin
Carp on the fly. Love it. Been doing it for a while!
I've got a lake full in Montana. What type of fly works best?
@@Riqrob depends on conditions. top, sub surface and bottom. start with the montana hybrid fly and san juan worm

I see 50-60 pounders during the spring time spawn where I fish it’s actually insane
I love carp flyfishing

yes this big fun had a 25 pounder in the uk on a 7 wt took 35 min to bring it in was fun tho .nice video
Nice job
Carp - the fish that you love or hate, depending on where you live and upbringing.
15:21 pretty sure that's a musky lol
Ya know what’s really fun? Carp on a 5wt and centerpin reel....
whoa....that would be fun!
Way to show what fish we will all be fishing for in 2025.
looks like something gets destroyed on the surface in the background at 3:57 ??

@@newflyfisher thanks for the advice! just got back from fishing and caught a carp after using a 12 lb leader(I was using 8 and 6 before)
Mirror carp are rare, nice. I catch a couple each season. "The Great Lakes of NYC"
live in Cornwall going to have to do this
areas around Ottawa are great for this

Nice! I'll definetly go fish there in the near future :)
It is a wonderful place and very beautiful. June is definitely the best month for getting these big fish in the flats. Have fun!
Johan Novotni this makes me want to try fly fishing
What reel is that?
That was a Ross reel, not sure they make it any more
Would it be okay if I used a 4 weight rod on 6-8 lb carp?
Stropix no lol
you could but it might not be good for the fish. it would take longer to fight the fish to hand and release it. the excessive lactic acid build up, especially in warm water, would kill the carp

It's perfectly fine for the fish, I use my 4 wt all the time.

I have tried every fly in my arsenal and nothing! I have caught just about everything on the fly... but no carp!
Next week we are uploading another video on fly fishing for carp. Hopefully they will help!
looks like some killer carp fishing! My local carp are educated and SPOOKY. I Rarely hook and land them. I would love to visit a spot like this
ZDG, if you can't land them and look after them maybe you shouldn't hook them.

no carp are beautiful! remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Carp often come from gross water, but they themselves are not gross.
excelente..muy bueno!!!

by now you’ve probably answered your question but prussian carp are just a breed of common carp, so most carp flies would work well
that is a pretty sucky net..look up net from a guy in oklahoma its called big carp tackle....better and easer to use
really should be using a larger net and landing for handling carp
Agreed, we will ensure that happens in the future. Thanks for feedback
What is this type of fishing like? Did he mention?

Also if you can't remove a barbed hook without ripping it out then maybe you should try using barbless. Some antiseptic on the hook wound helps too.
in the area this is filmed bow "fishing" is more common that anything for carp. they are considered garbage fish. antiseptic on the wound lol
Where I'm at, you actually get a fine if seen by the DNR for rereleasing a carp into the water after its caught
Antiseptic? Yea I harvest these things for my garden
Shut up Brit, where we live it doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars to have a pond with carp. Carp are a lot more hardy than you think
nice!!
I thought that was Bill Clinton in the thumbnail.
Probably was. He will do most things for money. He left his golf club out of the shot.
You should just get a Muslin head dress and then no sun rays will get to your skin.
Those of us who fish everyday tend to take care of our skin. Totally understandable how if you only get one day off a week you wouldn't care as much. Chase that paycheck sucker.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
We just remove all carp from the waters we fish, as they really mess everything up for the native fish species.
9 wt is such overkill. I never go above a 4 wt for carp
Colin Cournoyer 6 wt all the way for me
I run 8 weight
4 at? Man you're good!

wtf why fly fish bay of quinte for carp when you got 10+ lbs walleye monstrous bow trout and awsome bass fishing
