- Would you believe it, the McLaren P1 is now celebrating it's 5th birthday! To coincide with the anniversary, I have the opportunity to take out the single most famous example of a P1 and show you an in depth look before a proper drive in this epic hypercar! Is this not just a dream?!
Launched originally at the 2012 Paris Motorshow, the McLaren P1 was the second model from the new look McLaren Automotive, following on the heels of the MP4-12C supercar. With an entry to the hypercar territory with 916PS and 980Nm thanks to a combination of a 3.8l twin-turbo V8 and a KERS setup like the Formula 1 cars, it certainly demonstrated serious intent.
Even today, this is quite a phenomenal machine and the used prices of the 375 original McLaren P1s have shot up from their £866k start price to approximately £1.5 million on the market. It's no surprise when you look at the statistics and what it was able to achieve.
This particular car, prototype PP3, known fondly as 'P1 OOV' has been seen on the covers of hundreds of magazines, it's been driven at the Goodwood Festival of Speed by Jenson Button, in Belgium by Jeremy Clarkson and around Yas Marina by Chris Harris. It's finished in beautiful Amethyst Black with an interior that demonstrates race car in every way possible.
A thank you goes to McLaren for the opportunity to participate in the celebrations of their most special car to date, and although I have driven the P1 before, to actually enjoy it on some fantastic roads.

This video launches at precisely the time the McLaren P1 was revealed to the world 5 years ago in Paris! As part of the anniversary celebrations I had the opportunity to show you a full and in depth look around the most famous of all P1s, before taking it out for a drive on some incredible roads. Having been lucky enough to drive P1s before, this was my first time to take some time and show you all around it, and what made the P1 quite so special. What do you think? Has it truly left a mark on the automotive industry?

I don’t know how they do but in terms of looks, not just power, McLaren seems to be above everyone. Koenigsegg, Pagani or Bugatti cars are horrible, but McLaren makes authentic pieces of art, my fav being the F1.

Fun Fact: my icon picture is of the Mclaren P1 XLM the prototype LM. I took this picture at the Nurburgring on my dad's iphone on 28th of October 2016. I'm not kidding.

The concept version (which looks almost identical to the production version) was statically revealed five years ago today. He production version was revealed four years ago. Reviewers started driving it three(?) years ago.

My oh my, it's aged well and still looks fresh even being driven many times by different journalists and automotive presenters. time sure flies by as each car has its own story to tell.

I'm not sure if I'm just seeing things, but if you look at the driver's seat back, you can see the fabric coming away a bit to reveal some foam. Nice to see a hypercar that's been used enough so that's a thing!

Lovely video again Tim. Incredible to think it's 5 years! It doesn't feel that long at all. This car certainly has plenty in the tank to handle 99.9% of the cars on the road today. What a weapon!

Koeingsegg Agera RS begs to differ 🤷🏻♂️
Koeingsegg looks extremely ugly compared to any of the other major supercar brands (including Bugatti imo). Don't get me wrong, I would give up my first born for a Koeingsegg, but looks wise it isn't close to being as nice a McLaren.
The Miura is a beautiful car, but in terms of the best looking modern hypercar, the P1 has to take the cake.

Shmee150 on one of the Top Gear DVD’s this car was featured. It was funny, Jeremy and Richard were on a track and Richard crashed an F-Type on it. Jeremy wouldn’t let Richard drive the P1 but changed his mind only to let him drive up a short gravel road 😂

Nice to see Smhee actually flooring the throttle for once! Is it just me or does anyone else get this feeling of vast frustration when he doesn't take full advantage of some cars? I understand has to be responsible etc, but I find myself getting really annoyed when he up shifts after accelerating for half a second, as inside Im shouting 'come on fucks sake'. Maybe its just me! rant over.
It depends where I am, the type of roads, my environment and a whole bunch of factors. A few days ago you had me at Vmax in the LT, tomorrow you'll have me at near on 200mph in an Aventador S, hope that's ok!

After 5 years it's still the best looking McLaren the back end is much better resolved than the newer models. A fantastic achievement for McLaren being such a young car manufacturer. Great in depth vid Shmee .
