Yes, you are exactly correct, the orbi system setup as star topology (not full mesh) is amazing... definitely beats most other competition. There are a couple settings to be wary of that I cannot remember off hand (look up settings you aren’t sure about to get general consensus if it is good or bad to enable in its current state/firmware version, especially if you are noticing subpar performance). One thing I really like about these also is that the web admin interface is fast in page refresh and settings changes. Some, even modern ones, are god-awful slow, which is extremely frustrating. I have been so impressed as to recommend and install these in the houses of 4 other friends and family, and they have worked flawlessly and problem-free.... the first among them 2 years ago.
Peyton, Nice review, easy to watch and listen to. Thanks. The Orbi system is great! I set mine up about two weeks ago and it's been perfect - fast! Setup was mostly automatic, and does NOT require a vendor account or constant connection to the Google Mothership. (There was NO REASON Google had to do that, other than to monitor and pry into your internet usage patterns.) My home is a very long ranch style house which got spotty reception in the far end rooms with a high-end router. Wifi extenders helped, but just like the Google "mesh" system, the extended signal is only 1/2 speed. The Orbi system gives FULL speed from both the router and satellite. BTW, the LED complaint you had is simple -- you can turn on/off the multicolored lights from the web based setup page. Default is off, as you found out.
Orbi on sale now for $130.00 RBK50. Now I get 940 Mbps from 200Mbps. Great product!!! First time I heard of mesh. The hardest part for me was setting my TP Link smart plugs back up. It wasn't detecting them.
Ever since I got this set up(1 CM1000 modem 1 rbr50 router and 3 rbs50 satellites... I've loved my 1gb speed internet. I just hope in the future model it can do GB speed wifi.
Excellent video! You mention the thing isn't very good when it comes to seamless roaming between router and satellite WiFi signals. How bad is it? Do VOIP calls or Skype calls lose connection?
Hey Peyton, good review. Would like to know if it is worth buying / having this router now (Nov 2021), considering that it is a three year old model. Wouldn't I be better off buying one of those AX1800 or so capable models which Netgear offers under its Nighthawk range of WiFi6 Routers ? I must admit I had an unpleasant experience with an RAX10 router from Netgear, and when I opted to return it and sought a refund, just to assuage me they have offered to replace my RAX10 with the RBK50 router, at no extra charge. Would like your view on whether it is worth the trade off, and if I will be able to use the Orbi RBK50 Router for the next couple of years without worrying about its redundancy (technology wise). Thank you.
Thank you for your review and thank you for showing the speed test result for a wired connection to a satellite! That has been my main concern since I've an original PS4 which can only connect to the 2.4Ghz wireless band which really really sucks for gaming online. One question, I've gigabit internet with Xfinity can I expect the same +400Mbps performance as yours via a wired connection with a satellite?
I've got 1 gig Wi-Fi service but my current wifi set up isn't giving me the speeds I'm paying for. Someone suggested this orbi system. I'll let you know if it's finally giving me the speeds I'm paying for.
I hate the app. BUT the performance is top notch, I have the Orbi rbk50 with 2 satellites with a fiber 1GB internet and I get between 920-950 all around the house which is pretty impressive. I recommend trying to change a few settings in the web app like changing the channels or enabling beamforming.
Great video. Does the Orbi allow you to set up a separate ssid for 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands or are you forced to use only one ssid and the router chooses the band?
I live in an 1300 sq ft. apartment and right now having issues with TP-link archer reaching one of the corners where my work desk is. Anyways I wanted to buy a second router for redundancy. What would you recommend between AC1900 vs. Orbi. I was considering Orbi for future proofing in case I move a house. Price seems to be the same for both. Suggestions?
I setup my Orbi 3 weeks ago Im not getting anywhere near what your speed tests are 40ms DL and 5.64 Upload Guess I need to call support and find out why
I’m getting upload speeds of 70 when the Orbi router is actually getting 500 for upload? My old Verizon router was able to do 300. Any idea what is going on?
Since it has been two years since you posted this review, do you still have the same thoughts on the Orbi? Did they do the USB storage drive update? For a novice, would this be a problem product?
My thoughts are basically the same; it’s still one of the best routers I’ve ever tested. And no, no update regarding the USB capabilities. For a novice, this would be a great choice as it is relatively easy to set up and maintain.
Any performance updates? I want to buy for my 1900 sq ft home (1950s built).i hear a lot of chatter about dropped connections and difficulty syncing with the Ring doorbell. Any advice?
Can you do a mix setup ? For example, The Main orbi router is connect to sattelite 1 via wire, and sattelite 2 is connected via wireless to the sattelite 2. Is that possible ?
Peyton, thank you for the great reviews. I desperately need a new router and was looking at the Orbi AX6000 RBK852. Then I read your review and I was troubled by a few things like the fact that you can't hide the SSID and you don't have a USB port on the RBK852. As you suggested, I went back and watched your video on the RBK 50 and it looks fine. I have an old 4400sq ft house that has 3 large floors. My computer sits on one side of the main floor and the entertainment center is 50 feet away on the main floor. My husband has an office in the basement and there are bedrooms upstairs. Will the main floor router cover that area? Or would I need to buy an extra RBS50 satellite and put one satellite upstairs and one satellite in the basement? I see that the standalone RBS50 satellite costs about $250. I was hoping that the standard RBK 50 package that has a router and 1 satellite would be enough to cover the house, what do you think? Thank you!
I just purchased this and I'm still not getting good speeds over wifi, I have Verizon Fios 940/880 Mbps and over wifi the most I get is around 175/200 Maybe its on the Verizon side idk..
What's going on P? I've got the RBR50 system with the two RBS50 satellites..My internet speed is 600mbs down and 15mbs up. Wifi speeds are great however, my backhaul im only getting 150mbs max on satellite which my pc connects directly into. Also have an 8port lan switch connected to this satellite to connect all my other electronics in my bedroom including my Phillips 4K android Tv which i barely get 50 mbs onto.. What am i doing wrong? Can i remedy this issue? I've cut the cord from my cable and upped my internet from 300mbs down but im still struggling with streaming on my TV and other android boxes.
Do I need to turn my Virgin media hub to modem only and then connect the Orbi to the one outlet port. So it makes my virgin media hub redundant??? NEED HELP PLEASE!!!
Hey there! I got 2 main q s: 1. Let's say: from the provider modem-->rj cable -->the main orbi router. Can i continue with another rj cable (inserted into the router) to the satellite? Essentially to connect them through internet cable? If so does the back haul still work? Also can i connect a pc to the satellite (wich is already wired to the main orbi) ? 2. I've heard numerous complaints about updates that literally guts the user experience. Signal drop outs, lower speeds. Do u still use this mesh or ud u recommend smth else?
1) Yes, you can use Ethernet as the backhaul just as you described. 2) Yes, I still use the Orbi, and there’s a workaround way to disable automatic updates which I would strongly recommend you do. If you decide to get the Netgear Orbi, send me an email and I’ll let you know which firmware version I recommend for the best stability, as well as how to disable automatic updates.
Initially when I bought this product, I had no issues. A few months later, the internet connection drops every few minutes. There is no support from netgear and it seems to be an ongoing issue from what I can see from other users on the netgear online forum. Has anyone experienced this issue and how did you fix it? I’m on the verge of throwing away the product altogether.
Does the internet connection cut out no matter whether you’re connected to WiFi or Ethernet? If it only cuts out over WiFi, you could try changing your WiFi channel; there may be other interference on the channel you’re on.
So you mention seeing which clients are connected to which AP, can you do that with the web interface since you mentioned that you can't see it in the app? I have Google Wifi and also want to know which devices are connected to which ap, since I've noticed that some of my devices will (for some God awful reason) be connected to an ap across the house, and getting poor performance even though they are in the same room as an a different AP.. I'd like to see this get better by moving to Orbi. Have you noticed devices connecting to the wrong ap with Orbi?
Yes, in the web interface you can see which AP each client connects to. Based on my experience, the Orbi does a pretty good job of making sure devices are connected to the appropriate AP. I find it pretty aggressive; it will start the handoff process not long after the client device is within better signal strength of another AP. One minor issue is that I noticed a slight lapse in network usability during the handoff process, but functionality comes back very quickly (maybe 10 seconds). Here’s an example of what I mean by that: My phone will be connected to the Orbi upstairs. I’ll walk downstairs, and my phone will start switching to the basement Orbi before I get to the bottom step. I’ll open the Home app on my iPhone to turn a basement light on, but my phone won’t be fully connected for another few seconds, so I’m unable to turn the light on right away. The same is true if I were to try to access something over the internet. Hope that helps.
This handoff is what seems to be missing from my Google Wifi experience. I'll often be downstairs on the opposite side of the house from my master bedroom wifi access point and notice my phone is connected to the master bedroom wifi point. IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE LIVING ROOM AP. It just never gets moved to the AP in the same room as it. As a result, I'm getting half the signal I'd get from the AP in the same room. It's often an hour or so after I have been sitting there that I notice it's still connected upstairs. Note, I probably have too much overlapping coverage in my house. I have a 3k sq ft house with 3 Google Wifi's in it.
Can you hard wire the satellite if you have a switch on the other side of the house. This way the rbk50 is hard wired to the modem and the satellite is also hard wired to a switch? Thanks
If you’re planning on using this for gaming, you might wanna reconsider. It connect well but if someone else in your household streams Netflix or any other streaming apps, your game will lag badly.
I have fiber broadband here in the UK. My down is 110mbps and my up is about 10mbps. Unless I wanna pay a much higher amount, my up will always be slower 😔
what are your settings like i can only get 150mbps out of my 300mbps on wifi. im asking because you are getting 457 on wifi. my connection is a 300/300 fiber to the house connection with at&t
Its a very nice router, but i got problems with it when im playing games such as PUBG and Apex. Internet randomly disconnect (not only from the game, but everything else on my computer, discord etc.). I tried to find a solution for it, and most people say that you need to change/add something in the QoS settings. But there is not settings there, only a way to speedtest ur internet... You know any other way to fix that?
That sounds familiar to problems I’ve experienced. For some odd reason, when I have my PS4 to the satellite via Ethernet, the satellite would have connection issues to the main router, which would then cut out any connection that is transmitting through the satellite (so games would get disconnected). I decided to connect my PS4 via WiFi, and I haven’t had any issues since. It may seem counterintuitive, but choosing WiFi over Ethernet might be the better option for gaming. I would recommend giving that a try.
I’m not sure about going between concrete, but based on the fact that it’s very hard for any WiFi to travel through concrete, I’d guess this doesn’t perform that well, either. And yes, this is better than the AmpliFi HD, but I’m not sure about other Ubiquiti products.
Ubiquiti : many installers are done being married to their client's wifi needs. Orbi and other mesh : setup once and let the product self adjust over time... No need to handle channels power levels or roaming parameters. Oh and a great app to change wifi configuration fast !
So I have 150 mbs plan from comcast. You mean to tell me that I will have a much higher speed than that. I cam here because I have been having so much trouble with when I play online with my PS4.. I don't mind the price... I just want a better gaming experience. Now will I get a far better signal when when I purchase this device.
I haven’t had disconnection issues. The routers automatically update, which has lead to problems. One auto-update made my HomeKit devices stop working properly; however, after updating to a beta firmware, that problem has been resolved. That’s the only issue I’ve had with this router.
The Orbi runs fine for about six months and then it gets hit with updates and becomes the worst investment you have ever made. I have even been sent a replacement which is worse. If you can get your money back do it now, you will be happy you did!
This mesh system is trash, yes it has range I'll give it that much, but extremely inconsistent. Go with something else, one big issue for me is the fact that everything connects to the router and not what devices are closest to the router or satellite. Even the app is terrible I'll save you the trouble, but don't say I didn't warn you. I wish I never bought this system and could return it.
Don't buy one under any circumstances if you use iPhones because 75% of websites will be unreachable with you being asked for a password to access them. I just paid NZD670 and now have to use mobile data to access websites that need a password, it's an absolute disgrace for Netgear to put such a piece of trash on the market.
"I'm not gonna bored you by showing you the website or the app" Dude you're reviewing a device f*ck boring you need to cover everything. This is a pass on to the next!
I purchase this same package yesterday after researching on TH-cam. I agree this unit kicks butt!!!! Thank you for your review!!!

If it did track real time data usage, you would not like the performance hit it would cause. It's a MAJOR hit on performance, regardless of MFR.
The app is great! Tells you each time something connects to your network and has testing capabilities to determine connection
Love that the light dosnt stay on blue have an issue sleeping in a room and the router is blinking and bright

About AUD$600 here in Australia. Just a bit too expensive. Performance looks very good though.

You know any other way to fix that?
Do you game over WiFi or Ethernet?
@@PeytonB Ethernet
One more question: is the Ethernet cable connected to the main unit or the satellite?
@@PeytonB the satelite
That sounds familiar to problems I’ve experienced. For some odd reason, when I have my PS4 to the satellite via Ethernet, the satellite would have connection issues to the main router, which would then cut out any connection that is transmitting through the satellite (so games would get disconnected).
I decided to connect my PS4 via WiFi, and I haven’t had any issues since. It may seem counterintuitive, but choosing WiFi over Ethernet might be the better option for gaming. I would recommend giving that a try.
What is the voltage rating volts/hertz?
Can anybody tell smth on vpn ) wanna know if it’s possible to set up on orbi( OpenVPN , l2tp) or maybe smth different . Bible question for me )
Is this alright to go between floors(concrete) on apartments?
Better than Ubiquiti?
I’m not sure about going between concrete, but based on the fact that it’s very hard for any WiFi to travel through concrete, I’d guess this doesn’t perform that well, either. And yes, this is better than the AmpliFi HD, but I’m not sure about other Ubiquiti products.
Ubiquiti : many installers are done being married to their client's wifi needs. Orbi and other mesh : setup once and let the product self adjust over time... No need to handle channels power levels or roaming parameters. Oh and a great app to change wifi configuration fast !
you sound exactly like internet comedian cole hersch wow
So I have 150 mbs plan from comcast. You mean to tell me that I will have a much higher speed than that. I cam here because I have been having so much trouble with when I play online with my PS4.. I don't mind the price... I just want a better gaming experience. Now will I get a far better signal when when I purchase this device.
No, you will only get up to the speed you pay for, no matter what router you have. This router may help with your lag issues, though.
Felix Rko don’t use it for gaming bro. It’s good but as soon as someone streams instant lag comes with it
@@Luke_Anthony What would you recommend for gaming Luke?
People get tons of disconnect issue after couple months use. go to check Netgear website and see how many people complain about it.
How did you get the VPN option to show up on your phone?
Ryan Amirault I would love to know.
I’m getting 570 mbps on speedtest using Xfinity XFi from phone
Whats the internet speed that u paid?
Has anyone had the guts to text the number in the description box?
Watching them through these lol
Question. Is this its own wifi? Do i still have to pay monthly for example to spectrum? Or do i still make payments to a provider??
This mesh system is trash, yes it has range I'll give it that much, but extremely inconsistent. Go with something else, one big issue for me is the fact that everything connects to the router and not what devices are closest to the router or satellite. Even the app is terrible I'll save you the trouble, but don't say I didn't warn you. I wish I never bought this system and could return it.
my internet downloads at 500kbps on a good day :(
Yo Lo i think its because of corona man
10mpbs squad?
Nice video i subscibed
I have 1 gig internet, will i pull around 800-900 mpbs on wifi?

JHANTT
Does Orbi work with Fios?
Yes.
What would the ping be on fortnite
I bought this besause my wiifi SUCKS
Don't buy one under any circumstances if you use iPhones because 75% of websites will be unreachable with you being asked for a password to access them. I just paid NZD670 and now have to use mobile data to access websites that need a password, it's an absolute disgrace for Netgear to put such a piece of trash on the market.
The Internet Guy Came Today And I Asked Him Is There Anyway My WiFi Can Be Faster He Said To Get A WiFi Extender And Is This A WiFi Extender
Lmao we got orbi with our century link and it got 10x worse so I just booted our whole WiFi system now my mom has to buy new WiFi 😂
