Great review! I watched this last week and was extremely impressed with updated speeds and connectivity in the distant spots of your house. Had to get them myself. Night and day difference. Full connectivity all around my house, even outside. Thanks again!
Thanks for watching Eric, and you're very welcome. I'm glad the Orbi worked out for you. I think the best thing about this type of product is when you don't ever think about it again, it just works.
Great review. I purchased the Orbi system after watching your video and am very happy with it's performance. Not only did it improve and simplify the wifi inside my home, it also provides a strong wifi signal inside my detached garage ! I'm able to run my security cameras at full 1080p without the intermittent dropped signals that I had in the past. Also like the fact that I am able to connect all my wireless devices to one network , instead of the 3 networks associated with my previous router and range extender. Thanks for your well crafted review and advice.
Very happy with the Nestcams ! I use them as outdoor surveillance cams, but have them positioned indoors. They are easy to set up, much like the Orbi, and the picture quality is excellent. The Nestcam app is also very useful, easy to navigate and reliable. I just purchased a pair of the outdoor nestcams and plan to install them in the spring. The specs appear to be the same as the indoor cams, except that they are weatherproof. Great product !
Thank you for your detailed review. I also bought the Orbi and I'm IN LOVE WITH IT!!!!!! I think this is THE BEST WiFi MESH SYSTEM on the market and I highly recommend it. Before with Apple TimeCapsule, the internet speed was 20-30 meg/sec in far areas from the router but now with Orbi, I get >90 meg/sec download and upload speed everywhere!!!! Even in the garage!!! Simply THE BEST! The other good thing about the Orbi is that both router and satellite have 4 ethernet ports which is very useful.
Good call about the Ethernet ports, I should have explicitly included it in the review. Glad it's working well for you, mine is still great! Thanks for watching
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. I've been contemplating getting a mesh system for our home and with Apple's recent exit from the router business, the Orbi is the solution I am considering. Again, thanks!
Thank you and thanks for watching Devin. Let me know if you have any questions. I've had the Orbi up for a week now and so far it's been doing just what I hoped.
Both very helpful videos. I had the same problem. We live in a house from 1910 and it's just shy of6,000 square feet. Old house three story big thick walls lots of doors and twists and turns. Just bought the orbi system with two satellites. Had no problems with the install. It was pretty much plug and play. No problems with firmware/updates. It took a few tries for the router to link with the satellites but I figured that would b the case. I followed the instructions exactly on the quick setup guide. Once I got the system working I then played with the best location for the satellites. I moved them around to get the best signal. So far so good!! I can finally stream Netflix in the basement! My only critique is that I needed a guest network but nowhere in the setup or packaging did it say I could. I had to go online to find that out.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad it's working out well for you like it is for me. I think what happened was that they didn't have the guest network available when the Orbi was released so it wasn't included in the documentation. I think it was a few months after I got mine that they announced it. I wonder if it's in the docs now. Streaming everywhere is so nice isn't it?
I replaced my first gen nighthawk AC1900 and nighthawk extender with this system. Im pretty glad that I did. I basically doubled my connection throughput on the opposite side of my house.
Loving my Orbi as well. On thing I do love is I have the satellite Orbi located at my entertainment center. I'm utilizing the 4 Ethernet ports on the satellite for my Xbox, PS4, Roku and 4K Firetv. This works fantastic and cuts down on wifi signal pollution. I have Xfinity 300mbps DL/30mbps UL. Average data speeds on any device on the downstairs satellite is 225mbps! My old router was the Netgear X8 that had the 2.4Ghz radios fail twice on 2 different ones. Thank God for BB warranty and allowing me to use that money for an upgrade to Orbi!!
My router (the base Orbi) is upstairs. It's definitely not line of site. If you go straight up on my living room wall 13ft (My 2 story house has an open balcony that looks down to the open living room) then to the left 21ft. So about 34ft +/-. One other thing I noticed setting it up yesterday on the setup menu I had to place a check mark to turn on beam forming and MU-MIMMO. It was in small print(with check boxes) in the left bottom of one of the setup screens. So folks need to make sure to do that. Great review you did on the Orbi!👍
Thanks Mike! For those of you who are reading this comment, log into your Orbi (orbilogin.net) then pick the ADVANCED tab at the top, then go to ADVANCED SETUP (left sidebar) and select WIRELESS SETTINGS. You will see 2 options at the bottom "Enable implicit beamforming...." and "Enable MU-MIMO". Mine were checked already, but you can go and make sure yours are as well. Thanks for sharing that Mike!
Tech Gear Talk a few other observations to bring light to. 1. Since this is a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) the 2.4 band has better range and penetration through walls etc. The downside of this is that 2.4 is band limited thus slower speeds. Another negative to 2.4 is your device will want to hang on or revert to 2.4. If you have older laptop or other devices 2.4 will be the only band they will work on! If you have newer devices that are capable of 5Ghz band and reach a certain signal level threshold the device will go back to 2.4. 2. To remedy the above issue you can do to things. One if all your devices are capable of 5Ghz disable the 2.4Ghz band in the menu and you will always get the higher data speeds. Or do as I did, go into the setup menu and reduce the 2.4Ghz power level to 50%. This helps for me to stay on the 5Ghz better! I would love if Netgear gave us the option to have 2 separate SSIDs one for 2.4Ghz and one for 5Ghz. This would make this router setup a 10!!
Thank you for your review. I installed the Orbi system and could not be any happier with it. The installation was incredibly simple as well so they must have updated the firmware issue that you had. Thanks again!
+Chris Eb thanks for watching Chris! Glad you're enjoying the Orbi. Thanks for letting me know about the firmware issue too! People asked and I couldn't answer.
Awesome video! Just picked up My Orbi wifi system and I now have a reliable connection to my internet everywhere in my home (3000+ sq ft, not including basement). I too have tried many routers: Asus AC 1700 & 1900, Linksys WRT AC1900 & AC3200, and the most recent over the top Asus AC5300 and still encountered dead spots. Almost everywhere now I'm getting almost full speed except one of the bedrooms which is the farthest from the router and the satellite, it's getting about half the speed but still better than dropping out. I'm going to pick up a satellite once netgear sells them individually.
Thanks for watching and the complement. Just like you, I knew in the back of my mind that even if my current setup of router + 1 satellite ended up not giving me the results I wanted I would just get another satellite. Glad to hear that it's working well for you. If you do end up getting another satellite please come back and tell me how that worked out.
Tech Gear Talk out of curiosity I went out and bought a linksys velop 3 pack system to compare the two. The linksys was very clunky to set up requiring a few resets. Also, I noticed that the velop was a bit slower compared to the netgear orbi was giving me at same locations. After a few days I returned the velop and am sticking with the orbi. In 6-8 months it will be possible that netgear and other major manufacturers will come up with better mesh systems to replace these 1st generation mesh wifi systems; but one thing is for sure, I will not go back to a single wifi router solution again.
Yes of course. It has been about a year and there's nothing out there currently that is better IMO. I've had almost no issues except for a couple of times during the year I needed to do hard reset because the satellite would not reconnect back to the main hub.
I've had to do that a few times here an there. I use the app now so I don't have to go to the satellite, but I guess if they don't reconnect it may not work.
My router output connection is at the back of my house. Needed a really good router to reach the front, so I got Had a linksys ac5400 and also got a netgear extender for connection towards the front. It was honestly decent in the front, great connection in the back since the router was located there and it is one of the higher end models. Yeah . . . it was kind of inconvenient for the output to be behind the house, but thats how the house was setup and didn't want to bother doing all the work to move the output connection. Actually just installed the ORBI, I have to say, it works just as well as the linksys ac5400 in terms of internet speed, this opinion is just based off of how I test internet speed, by just watching a video online and skipping parts to see if it loads quickly. Im sure the linksys ac5400 is more for high internet speed with multiple devices connected. For the ORBI on the other hand, just got it, the connection is far better in the front of the house now with the router and 2 other of it's extenders(satellites), but not sure how it will do with multiple devices vs. internet speed. I highly recommend the ORBI if you need to be connected to wi-fi at every part of your home. We currently have the ORBI with the the primary router and the extenders, which they call satellites, i have no idea why. Overall, hoping this is the last router i'll have to get in a while.
Hi Rolf, thanks for the detailed comment. I have multiple devices connected (2 smart tvs, 2 desktops, a laptop, an ipad and 4 iphones) and we have no problem. Of course we have a limit of 50Mbps from our provider, so we can't exceed that, but that's not a limitation on the Orbi side. At this point that is the fastest option. Glad it's working well for you too!
so my girl friend and myself have been looking into getting one of these. from the reviews we have looked at they all day the same thing. The product is awesome! the issue though is that they have to repeatedly reset it because it loses conection.
Hi Jay. That's for watching. I have not had that experience. When you say loses connection, do you mean the router loses connection with the satellite? or the router loses connection with the internet?
Very helpful review! I initially was skeptical of how it would perform but decided to buy this versus the Google Mesh and give it a try because of your review. Thanks.
This is actually a very good video, and Orbi is the future router I'm going to buy for my new house, this is a very good example for me to review. Compare to the traditional one router, this hive network Netgear Orbi could better cover a two floor or even 3 floor house. I wish that the set-up for Orbi and the router configuring webpage could be showed in the video would be great! Thanks!
Thanks for watching Ron! If you follow the link in the description you'll help support the channel and also it's a lower price than I paid since it's on sale now.
Thanks for the video! Great work and both the Orbi review content and production value was top notch. I'm crossing my fingers that the Orbi helps our household out. The wifi holy grail has always been out of reach and I've spent at least a thousand dollars on different solutions over the years. I'm now pushing the network through my coax cable (using a technology called MoCA) and using 3 different Ubiquity Unifi AP's to try and put together a seamless network. I still need to create different SSIDs so that I can override device/AP handoffs that don't happen when they should (eg. the iPad remains connected to the downstairs AP even when you walk upstairs and there's another AP just feet away.) If the Orbi can solve this and other issues, it'll be easily worth the cost. Fwiw, Costco has another deal for the Orbi router plus two satellites for 499. Not sure if that will be needed in my case, given your results, but I thought I'd put it out there for others. PS. What camera and mic setup did you use for the interview/couch shot? Everything in the video looked amazing, from the steady cam to great lighting. My OCD was killing me with the phone's battery level during the old router tests ;)
Chris, thanks for watching and for the compliments; much appreciated. I'm right there with you regarding past wifi solutions. I tried various wireless AP configuration and they were always clunky which is why for the past year and a half I just lived with bad signal and used my cellphone data is certain areas. The whole handoff issue is just so frustrating. The Orbi solved that issue and as a bonus my whole back yard still has coverage (which it did with the X6) Sounds like a good deal at Costco if you do need the 3, how big is the house? I used a 5DMKIII and an ME66. Your comment about the phone battery CRACKED ME UP!!! I was thinking the same thing as it was going on. Why didn't I just charge it beforehand?
great review, Thanks. Would love it if you would do a comparison between the Netgear orbi and the new Google Wi-Fi setup. Everyone is raving about the Google Wi-Fi for the large area it can cover, but I understand these speeds are not very good and are limited. Of course it's cheaper than the Netgear orbi and easier for most folks. I would love to see a detailed comparison as throughput and signal strength is most important to me.
Are you happy with the G wifi? The Orbi has been absolutely awesome for me. However, if the G WIFI works for you and you're happy, there is no reason to change it. If you're unhappy, I would totally recommend you check out the Orbi!
I have a question regarding the mode, can this work with a wired router (main, no wifi capability) that’s directly connected to modem (fiber isp), then use the orbi as wireless access points? modem->router(main)->orbi
If I understand what you mean then yes. I actually use it that way. I have a modem/router for my Fiber and I use the Orbi for the Wi-Fi. I turn off the wi-fi on the Fiber Modem/Router. However, I still plug my desktop directly into the Fiber router for the fastest sweep possible.
It would kinda be nice if you could draw a map of the house and where the Orbi's went. Just to have an idea. Say you ended up not using the nighthawk after all? Would it be possible to keep it in the network if you needed to cover a small part that missed the coverage?
good idea. If it didn't cover the whole house, I wouldn't use the nighthawk (because it would be a new network). I would get another Orbi satellite and just plug it in. Does that make sense?
Can anyone advise me if this replaces the Optus router/modem that came with my package? is it a case of unplugging that one and plugging this in or does some setting on the router/modem I have need changing? Im confused.
Hi Gerry. For me, it did not replace the model, you still need one of those. This plugs into the modem and then creates the mesh network. For "best results" they tell you to turn wi-fi on your router/modem since you won't be using it.
@@TechGearTalk Thanks...that was quick. Just looked at my modem and it looks simple enough...never noticed the wifi on off switch before!!!!!!! I assume the voip phone will still work
Thanks so much for your video. I can't agree more with what you said in the first part, here in Saudi Arabia we have a much bigger house then what you have in US, and due the high degree weather in summer our wifi routers always struggles with the - thick - walls ,and i struggled with a bunch of "high end" access points and repeaters, I've got 200mb Internet speed on my main router but with these repeaters i couldn't get more than 20mb, it's really frustrating. I was hoping that the Netgear Orbi will solve these issues for me but i just can get my hopes so high, but after watching your experience with the router i think it will be the final and best solution for the wireless extending issues. Although, Google WiFi keep comes to my mind every time when i think of the Netgear Orbi, specially that it comes as three hubs for 299$, also i have Google OnHub now so that i can use it as a fourth hub according to CNET www.cnet.com/how-to/onhub-router-will-work-with-google-wifi/ Anyway thanks again for your video.
How far can you walk down the block with a decent signal? Reason I'm asking is my detached garage is about 350' from my main home connection, and the rear of the garage is another 120' back. Do you think this will work?
I don't think it will work because the router and the satellite are too far from each other. Is there any structure in between? That way you could plug in another satellite in the middle.
I completely agree. Might as well just do that and then put another access point there and you're set. It's always nice to do things wirelessly where you can but in this case hard wiring it would just work better.
if you changed the dhcp settings and what not, could you hook up the router and satellite with an Ethernet cable? I'd love it if you could show off the firmware.
I'm just curious if its capable as all. I have two routers at home hooked together by their switchports with a powerline ethernet adapter. This allows one of the routers to act like an access point rather than a router. You just have to make sure they both have the same network name, password, and that the router that is acting as the access point has its dhcp disabled and ip addess staticlly assigned. The powerline ethernet adapter allows me to have the benefit of a cabled connection between router and access point without the detriment of running actual cables through the walls.
Nice. How’s the performance? Honestly, for me, wireless is good enough. Now that I have fiber, I’m still getting ~260 up and down even at the other end of the house.
It preforms quite good compared to only having one router. The only trouble is sometimes my phone won't roam as aggressively as i'd like. As far as I know there's no pretty way to increase the roaming aggressiveness on android.
You bet. The router is on the second floor at one end of the house and the satellite is on the first floor in the middle of the house. If you look at the walkthrough (starts at 1:16) and then pause it at 1:24 (right after I come down the stairs) you will see the Orbi satellite on the left side on a wooden chest. it's probably about 60 feet (a little over 18 meters) away if there was direct line of sight.
I bought the Orbi from Costco for my 2k sq. ft. home. 1 router and 2 satellites, and we still have problems streaming video - movies, youtube, etc. I can't figure out the problem. Router is upstairs where the 4 bdrms are; Satellite 1 is probably 25 ft away in the hallway; Satellite 2 is downstairs, directly below the Router (no brick in my house), and we still get buffering delays and interruptions with every device, be it phone, smart tv, or Roku. Do you have any suggestions?
Hmmm, you shouldn't have any issues, that is actually more than you need. Have you run a speed test while wired to the router? go to a Speed Test website and then give me your results here. Let's start there.
Thank you for the quick response; I'm sorry it took me some time to get back to you with answers. I ran several speed tests. The highest download speed I got was 1.41, and the highest upload result .36. (Admittedly embarrassing.) We've been hanging on to our ATT internet modem for years. Is that the problem? Can I just buy a new and improved one to correct the issue? Thanks for the help.
I'm sorry. You must've gotten annoyed because I asked for your help and then took so long to respond. I would still appreciate your input. Maybe I misunderstood what the Orbi system was all about? I don't know. I'm at a loss. Thanks.
Hi Penny. Sorry, I somehow missed your last comment. If your download speed is at 1.41 when you are wired to the router then your problem is right there. Nothing to be embarrassed about but do you know how much bandwidth you are paying for? My first call would be to ATT to find out what speed you are supposed to have at your house. The Orbi can't increase the speed ATT is bringing into your house, but it will greatly help with the coverage of your network so that your whole house is covered. I don't know of ANY high speed internet plans that only give you 1.41 Mbps. Let me know what you find out form ATT and if you don't get a response from me in a day or 2 always leave another comment as a reminder.
I don't think I was "wired" to the router. I stood next to the satellite with my phone, and ran the speed test that way. I will try again, if my kid can show me how to wire my phone to router. Also, I don't know how much bandwidth I'm paying for. I'll check into these things and get back to you. Thanks.
Great video, packed with valuable information, well done. I think what would have made it better is having before and after results showing your Speedtest readings from the same room. Even if you could have just presented it as a screenshot of en Excel spreadsheet page, listing the rooms, then before speed for each room, after speed and another column to show speed change +/-.
Thanks TKD, I really appreciate the feedback! I was trying to do that with the overlay of the previous speed while showing the new speed, but I get your point. It's absolutely awesome though. Again, thanks for watching!
Tech Gear Talk thanks for the replay ..”cuz i want to connect it directly to 12v dc port on my Ups with 2 head 12v dc wire which will give me at lease 8 hr when there is not electricity .. The one it come with won’t work for me since its only connect to Ac plug” nice video very helpful thanks again 😊👍🏻
That makes a ton of sense. I'm glad you like the video and that it was helpful. Please let me know how the DC wire works in you end up implementing it.
it works quite well .... my house is 1 floor but 4500 sq ft ... at the far end I'm pulling 120 MBS ... so thats great .... Toss all of my apple stuff in the trash ... Are the satellites and main unit supposed to be illuminated or no ?
That's awesome to hear! My router is definitely not illuminated. I'll go check the satellite as soon as I get home and let you know. What do you get right by the router?
Hi Jason. Yes, you can. Do you already have an Orbi? I bought the 1 router + 1 satellite system, but you can get 1 router + 2 satellites. Then if needed, you can get an additional satellite. Should be plug and play. Let me know how it works out.
Hi Adam. Thanks for watching. That is a really good question. I haven't tested those yet but I will post a review if I get the chance. I've used other powerline adapters in the past and they have not been great for me. I would also want the adapter and wifi rather than just adapter as I wouldn't want to have to use an Ethernet cable for each device.
GREAT review. I have a quick question - If you connect a device for example a TV which has a Ethernet cable running from it and connected to the Ethernet port on the ORBI, would this be a hard wired connection as if the TV was connected to my main router?
Depends on your speed. When I did this video, I had about 60 down, and that’s what I was getting at the satellite also. Now I have ~800 down wired but I get about 200 down at the satellite. That true with any router I tried.
Excellent review, just wondering what material your upper floors are made of? Mine are concrete and steel beams which dulls the WiFi significantly even directly below. My internet connection point is upstairs but entertainment hub is downstairs so getting decent internet down there is a challenge! Orbi is attractive but concerned whether it would be effective in my situation.
The floors are made of concrete and steel mesh (with hardwood on top) in most of the house. The exterior walls are brick and stucco. Interior walls are ether brick and stucco or wood and plaster (this house was added on to, so some of the current interior walls used to be exterior. How many floors is your house?
I would probably just do the basic system (router + satellite) and that should work. If you don't mind, please come back and update this tread with the results. Thanks!
There is no Coaxial input for the Orbi. I use a modem (from ATT - used to be from Comcast) then I connect that to the Orbi. I don't know about the Disney Circle - I'd give Netgear a quick call to make sure. As far as coverage, it's top notch, that I can for sure vouch for.
I currently use an Arris modem. The setup you are suggesting will work. You'll need to put one of the devices in bridge modem, essentially choosing which you want to use as the router. Unless there is a particular feature you like about the Arris as a router, I would let the Orbi act as the router. Thanks for watching (and hopefully subscribing)
No, but you can physically connect the router to another router and only use the Orbi system for your WiFi, but still use your router for other functions.
Thanks for the review. I also live in an old (wooden) house (about 85 square meters per floor). I'm not sure what old wooden houses in the US are like, but here in Norway they used to put clay in the space between the floors as insulation and fire proofing. This kills WiFi. Right now I have an AC3200 tri-band router on the ground floor with an extender in the basement and an extender on the 1st floor. Coverage without extenders is very bad even on parts of the ground floor. Basement and 1st floor is pretty much useless if you move around. As far as I can see I'd have to place both Orbis on the ground floor, but I can't see any reason that that would give me any better signal strength in the basement or on the 1st floor than what the AC3200 can give me, they use the same kind of radios. Horizontal coverage is not a big issue, but vertical is. Your thoughts? Best regards from Norway.
Thanks! Quick question. Are the extenders doing the job? Are they broadcasting the same or different SSID (network name)? I never had any luck with extenders. The signal was always weak, and it was a different network. The Orbi worked great for me because it created a single network that now covers 4 floors. There is also no signal degradation like with my extenders. Of course the signal gets a little weaker when I move far away from the router or satellite (example when I go outside of the house) but inside it's really amazing coverage. If I needed to, I could get another satellite but there is absolutely no need in my case.
Glad it was helpful. I still use it and am super happy with it. Let me know if you have any questions. If you end up getting it, let me know how it works out.
Thanks for watching Sean. From a range standpoint, it's not even close. The Orbi blows it out of the water. If you have areas in your house w no wifi, I wouldn't think twice. Get it. Sell your other router.
Yes. That's definitely an option. Before moving to this house I tried that approach in another home and I don't know if it was due to old wiring or not, but the speed I was able to achieve was very slow. I'm sure there are newer products now but I don't feel comfortable recommending anything without first testing it myself.
I some how got best buy to take back my nighthawk x6 after 11 months of use lol. Pick up the ORBI today and wifi range is pretty good i still have a 1 month to return if i dont like i'm waiting to see ur x10 results maybe that might be my final upgrade :)
So how far away did you place the satellite from the base unit? Same floor? 1st Floor? Totally opposite end of the house, etc.? Overall, well done and I appreciate the information ... most videos are just trade show conventions or marketing material.
Thank you so much for the feedback. I really should have included that info. The router is on the second floor at one end of the house and the satellite is on the first floor in the middle of the house. If you look at the walkthrough (starts at 1:16) and then pause it at 1:24 (right after I come down the stairs) you will see the Orbi satellite on the left side on a wooden chest. it's probably about 60 feet away if there was direct line of sight.
Hi there. I think I mention it in the video. Definitely no line of sight (going through several walls and the ceiling. I don't remember the distance, but I really think I mentioned it in the video. Let me know.
So where in the house did the satellite end up? Will you do another review now that you've had it a month?Other than the firmware glitch, Is there anything you do NOT like?
Thanks for watching. I will do an update in about a week. I have not encountered any issues to this point. I still absolutely love it. I have fast access everywhere in the house with no dead spots.
I have Orbi router and satelite and my speed is 33 Mbps near the main router downstairs in my living room. I have a satellite upstairs and when I test at the furthest part of the house upstairs in a bedroom I am getting 18 Mbps.
@@TechGearTalk What I found out is the speed depends on what device you are using. My computer attached with a wire directly to the router is much faster. It's off the charts. Faster than can be measured with 'speed test'.
Hi, great video thanks. Could you confirm the placement of the satellite? Was this on the ground floor ? How many walls (brick) did the signal from router to satellite have to pass ? Thanks again
Thanks! The router is on the second floor at one end of the house and the satellite is on the first floor in the middle of the house. Hey loved your review. How is the Orbi working after 3 years? Any issues? Also I currently have a Tp link load balancer router and 5 netgear access points. So for Orbi would I need to have a separate router? Thank you.
Hi there. IT WORKS GREAT!!! I added one more satellite because I wanted wifi outside. I don't see why you'd need another router. Just add enough satellites to cover the area you need.
Tech Gear Talk I’m sorry I wasn’t clear enough. I want to replace all the access points with the Orbi. And since mine is a load balancer vpn router I’m not quite sure it has a modem only mode for connection to the Orbi
It is with Ethernet Connected. The Orbi was in the Router Mode. I changed it in the AP Mode. orbilogin.com still not work but i can access with the intern IP. Now im testing the Orbi. Wireless signal is strong. But some wireless functions are still missing. But i thought i can Setup Orbi on the PC. Didn't know that i must do it with an Smartphone or Tablet. Thanks so far ;)
Thanks for watching! You are totally right. The router is on the second floor at one end of the house and the satellite is on the first floor in the middle of the house. I am going to do Network maintenance maybe reset and resetup on Sunday. Before that I will upgrade the current extender firmware and see if the issues goes away. If not, the Orbi might be the miracle solution. I don't like the color though. Lol but it's solid speed. Are you still using the Orbi to this day?
Absolutely. There is no way I’m changing it. Now I have Fiber so the speeds are much higher, but it works great. From a WiFi standpoint, I haven’t come across anything even close.
I also noticed that, they are no USB ports on the Orbi. I have an Printer and External Drive plugged in the router itself. Printer is in the usb port 2.0 and the drive into the USB 3.0 @@TechGearTalk
It looks like the Orbi handles the Wi-Fi very well, but how do I handle my wired connections. Currently I have the Netgear X8 with a Buffalo switch for my 16 wired connections (2 servers, Drobo, Synology, workstation computer) How does the Orbi handle wired connections, do I plug my buffalo switch into the Orbi, I need to get TOP performance to my two servers, drobo and sinology? Thanks and I really like this video
Hi Jim. Thanks for the comments, nice to hear as I'm just starting out. Both the Router and the Satellite have 4 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back. If you need more, I'm sure you can plug the Buffalo switch into one of them. That should take care of it. You like the Synology? I was thinking of getting one. Used to have a Drobo.
Hi Lisa. Do you mean if you actually plug into the satellite rather than using wifi? Also, when you say "speed decrease" in comparison to what? Let me know and I'll get right back to you.
Thank you for the video. I have been debating on getting the Orbi for some time now. I have a very strong connection throughout my house with my current router, when I play an online game and stream netflix on my TV my ping on the online game increases significantly. My internet speed is 200mbps. Will this device allow me to connect multiple devices without sacrificing the ping when playing online? Also, am I allowed to choose whether to connect to 2.4 or 5ghz? I'd like to use the 5ghz exclusively for my online gaming and everything else 2.4ghz. Thanks and great video
Loved the review! I also was having issue covering my whole house with my D-Link-890L so I opted for the mess wifi technology and bought myself the Orbi. So far I too see a huge improvement. My only question... I was wondering if there is a way to have the Netgear Orbi Router have both SSID (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) transmitted seperately. I would love to have the choice to connect each of my devices to either the 2.4 GHz band or the 5 GHz. I looked in the settings page of the router and have yet found a way to do that. Thought it would be such a basic feature since my previous two older routers did that. Anyways, I hope you undertand my question, and maybe you have an answer (or someone else reading this comment). It would be greatly appreciated. Loved your other videos too, you've got a new sub! Thanks again! Cheers from freezing cold Montreal, Canada.
Thanks for watching and stay warm! I'll do some more research into this to see if it can be done. At first glance, I couldn't find it in the router setting either. Keep me updated if you find a solution elsewhere. Thanks for subscribing!!
Hi just spend time watching your video. I too live in a older home such as yours (not as big though). I've got an ASUS RT‑AC5300 router, and still issues with dropped connections in my garage even with an repeater. I am still in search of the holy grail of strong signals in a router, but I am so in need of a router that has advanced Admin / GUI interface options that allow me to do VPN using OpenVPN tunneling, QOS, MAC filtering, and other advanced security features. Your video does not talk about this at all. Would you please elaborate further and tell us if this router as such options? A video walkthru of the Admin Interface would be greatly appreciated! Thx
i like your review. I am getting the same Orbi soon. What kind of internet plan were you using in the video? I am using xifinity blast DL speed up to 75 mbps. Also, do you think I need to change my modem as well for the better speed? I am using moto sbg6580 which is modem/wifi router built in the machine. Thank you for the video anyways it helps me a lot!!!
I was using Time Warner Cable which was promising up to 60 mbps. I can't imagine you need to change your modem. The best way to test that is run a speed test while wired to the modem/router (not using wifi). That will give you the speed that is coming in. If that's at 75 then you don't need to worry about anything else, the Orbi will take care of the coverage. Does that make sense?
Hi, I'm a new subscriber to the channel. I'm curious about the other features of the Orbi, I heard until recently it did not have an option for a guest network. Does it come with any parental controls?
Hi Mike. Thanks for subscribing. Yes, the Orbi does have parental controls as well as IPv6, Dynamic DNS, port forwarding, and access point mode. What are you using now?
Hi Dana. Thank for the feedback! I am definitely still using the Orbi and really like it. The channels are not separated, it's one network so I can't really tell what is being used. However, the speed is awesome everywhere in the house. Since the review, I've switched to Fiber so it's even better.
Thank you for your video, it's certainly got me thinking about this product. Can you tell me what's your PS4 like with the Orbi? Does it lag at all in multiplayer and does it download games etc fast? Does it have open NAT with the Orbi system? Thanks.
Thanks for watching Mark. Our PS4 is now killer. Before the Orbi we had pretty much no connection. We would have to take the PS4 upstairs to download games. Multiplayer or any online games were not even an option. Now we're getting about 95% signal strength wirelessly on the PS4 (which for us is 48Mbps down and 5.2 Mbps up), even though it is as far away form the router as possible in our house. The satellite is about 30 feet away from the PS4. Depending on your configuration, you might even be able to plug the PS4 directly into the Satellite (a little hard to help without knowing your exact setup). What are your download/upload speeds right now? What is your setup like?
Hi again, enjoying your new videos and I keep coming back to this one. I think I'm gonna bite the bullet but I wonder if you could help me with a couple of questions please? Can you run an ethernet cable from the router to the satellite (still keeping in wifi range) and then run a switch off the satelite (for AV equipment). If you can is it then possible to run another ethernet cable from one satellite to a second satellite and another switch etc? As well as improving my home's wi-fi coverage I'm also trying to introduce some ethernet availability (the house has none) without destroying every wall, floor and ceiling in the the house :) Sorry for the long post, cheers.
Glad it's still being helpful and no worries about the long post. You don't actually need to run a cable from the router to the satellite, I can't see why you couldn't just connect the switch to the satellite (if the 4 ports it provides are not enough). You can do the same from each satellite. Does this make sense?
Thanks for the reply. Yes that makes sense, I guess I was thinking about (and comparing it to) what I currently have, a modem/router and a hopeless wifi extender. I get about 50 down on my one ethernet connection (pc) which drops to 17 (my AV stuff) everywhere else in the house on wifi. I figured running that cable would make things more solid? I've always wanted to cable everywhere I could just never face destroying the whole house :) Thanks again.
I now have fiber so of course I only get the true "max" when I'm wired at the source but through wifi I still get 250 down 200 up at the farthest point in the house.
Can only dream of those speeds, my speed is our super fibre over here :) I forgot to ask can you port forward and tweak stuff with the Orbi router or is it all pretty much locked down plug & play? Cheers.
+Noah S technically around 250 although of course you're still limited by the overall bandwidth your isp provides. How are you planning to use it where you have so many devices?
Tech Gear Talk you have a lot of devices I have the neck your AC 1900 and it does not work like they said it would we have enough coverage just when it hits a certain amount of devices it just restarts every like five seconds
Great video thank you, looks like a X-MAs gift under the tree this year with my name on it. Cool dog in the video too, saw the Chewy boxes!! Any chance you can explain where and how far apart the satellites were from each other?
Thank you, glad it was helpful. The satellite was probably 60 feed away if you measured it in a direct line (which of course you can, but you know what I'm saying. You can see in the part that I walk how long it takes me to get there. Basically, I measured to the same spot on the same floor, used the "height" and then pythagorean theorem'ed it, LOL.
+Jason DiLaurentis I had a bad experience with those years ago but you're right; that would have been another option to consider. I'm super happy with the current setup. Thanks for watching Jason!
You sir have not only made the best step by step instructional video on this product but you have gained a subscriber for life.
Wow thanks!!
+fhkazm you are very welcome. Thank you for watching and I'm glad the Orbi is working out great for you. Which cameras are you using?
Nest cams. All running much better now and at a higher ( 1080 ) resolution.
+fhkazm awesome. I'm considering adding some. Will be reviewing a few soon. You happy with them?
Very happy with the Nestcams ! I use them as outdoor surveillance cams, but have them positioned indoors. They are easy to set up, much like the Orbi, and the picture quality is excellent. The Nestcam app is also very useful, easy to navigate and reliable. I just purchased a pair of the outdoor nestcams and plan to install them in the spring. The specs appear to be the same as the indoor cams, except that they are weatherproof. Great product !
Thank you for the info!
Again, super sorry for the late response. How is your current setup working?
Thanks for watching! That's great to hear. I couldn't believe it worked this well. I was skeptical honestly but can't argue with the results.
+Mike C. That's awesome!! So jealous of your Xfinity 300/30.... curious, how far is your satellite from the router?
Hi Mike. Sorry for the late response. That's a great idea! Thank you so much for taking the time to share it!
Are you still using the Orbi? How's it working for you?
Yes of course. It has been about a year and there's nothing out there currently that is better IMO. I've had almost no issues except for a couple of times during the year I needed to do hard reset because the satellite would not reconnect back to the main hub.
I've had to do that a few times here an there. I use the app now so I don't have to go to the satellite, but I guess if they don't reconnect it may not work.
very helpful and your a genuine presenter with no wanky music and bs. convinced me to buy over google nest
Super glad it was helpful! I still use and love mine!
Thanks.
Thanks for watching Mike. Please come back and let me know how the Orbi worked out for you.
Great Video. You answered most of queries and doubts. I was looking for a mesh system to solve my current woes with extenders.
Hi Marcus - glad you liked it. I'm still using this same system today!
Thanks!
Great review and very helpful. I'm about to watch your firmware video now :) I think I'll be looking for a local store that sells the Orbi after this.
I still need to create different SSIDs so that I can override device/AP handoffs that don't happen when they should (eg. the iPad remains connected to the downstairs AP even when you walk upstairs and there's another AP just feet away.)
If the Orbi can solve this and other issues, it'll be easily worth the cost.
The Orbi solved that issue and as a bonus my whole back yard still has coverage (which it did with the X6)
Sounds like a good deal at Costco if you do need the 3, how big is the house?
I used a 5DMKIII and an ME66.
Your comment about the phone battery CRACKED ME UP!!! I was thinking the same thing as it was going on. Why didn't I just charge it beforehand?
You've convinced me this is the way to go! Thanks.
Thanks for watching Julian. Let me know how it works out for you.
Awesome review ~
Thanks for watching Joe!! I appreciate it.
that was an awesome video and i know how it feels to be new to making videos best of luck man
Thanks for the support!
great review, Thanks.
Thanks for the comment. I'm already in the process of doing just that. Thinking of including the Eero as well.
Would love to see you compare and contrast the Orbi and the Eero.
Are you happy with the G wifi? The Orbi has been absolutely awesome for me. However, if the G WIFI works for you and you're happy, there is no reason to change it. If you're unhappy, I would totally recommend you check out the Orbi!
I have a question regarding the mode, can this work with a wired router (main, no wifi capability) that’s directly connected to modem (fiber isp), then use the orbi as wireless access points?
modem->router(main)->orbi
Tech Gear Talk exactly what I meant. Thanks man.
You are very welcome!
@@TechGearTalk absolutely! I wasn't sure you could buy additional units but that is obviously the perfect solution. Thanks for the reply!
Oh good. And you just plug them in - so easy.
Very nice review, I am buying it right now, totally convinced it will suit me well, thanks!
Awesome!! I'm so glad it was helpful. If you use the links in the description you'll have support the channel for free :)
I assume the voip phone will still work
As long as the phone is connected to the modem/router you should have no issues. Otherwise, you may need to change a setting on the Orbi.
Although, Google WiFi keep comes to my mind every time when i think of the Netgear Orbi, specially that it comes as three hubs for 299$, also i have Google OnHub now so that i can use it as a fourth hub according to CNET
www.cnet.com/how-to/onhub-router-will-work-with-google-wifi/
Anyway thanks again for your video.
You're welcome Rakan. So jealous of the 200MB :(
Let me know what you end up doing and how it turned out.
Tech Gear Talk thank you for that, I have a treehouse in between but I would have to run power to that. I may as well hardware the garage.
Why would you want to do that? Is it too far from the base?
Makes sense
Thanks for the video, very informative and it helped me make a decision on switching from my airport extremes
Thanks a lot, I'm really glad it was helpful. Like I said, I'm just starting out so I hope it wasn't boring :)
Just another quick question, where did you locate your satellite Orbi? How far from the base unit in yds/meters and what floor? thanks again
Hi! Is it possible to change the wifi channel manually in orbi?
yes
Can I hook up an Orbi into a Comcast gateway device that is both a modem/router combo?
You should be able to Ben. You can just put the gateway in bridge mode which will make it act as just a modem.
I have the same issue... thank you for the video. It really helped me out.
Super glad it was helpful. Did you get it to work?
I meant by getting wifi through the whole house.
+XBUCKSHOTX Lol!! My bad. It's late and I'm tired. Glad it worked out for you and that it got rid of your coverage issue!
Nice review. Just some info...ORBI has a start topology network not a mesh.
Can i use another 12v dc adaptor than the one it come with? so i can connect it to dc ups backup power cuz we have so many blackouts in my area
+Alan Baban I can’t see why not but I can’t confirm it. Why can’t you use the one that came with? Wrong orientation?
Tech Gear Talk thanks for the replay ..”cuz i want to connect it directly to 12v dc port on my Ups with 2 head 12v dc wire which will give me at lease 8 hr when there is not electricity ..
The one it come with won’t work for me since its only connect to Ac plug” nice video very helpful thanks again 😊👍🏻
That makes a ton of sense. I'm glad you like the video and that it was helpful. Please let me know how the DC wire works in you end up implementing it.
Thanks on my way to get the three orbit set up ..... Well done ,,,
Thanks for watching Heywood! Let me know how it works out!
it works quite well .... my house is 1 floor but 4500 sq ft ... at the far end I'm pulling 120 MBS ... so thats great .... Toss all of my apple stuff in the trash ...
Are the satellites and main unit supposed to be illuminated or no ?
That's awesome to hear! My router is definitely not illuminated. I'll go check the satellite as soon as I get home and let you know. What do you get right by the router?
Satellite is also not illuminated.
can you add another satellite to place in another location in the house? I lose a lot of speed on our third level
Hi Jason. Yes, you can. Do you already have an Orbi? I bought the 1 router + 1 satellite system, but you can get 1 router + 2 satellites. Then if needed, you can get an additional satellite. Should be plug and play. Let me know how it works out.
Great review. I'll definitely implement this in my home network.
Thanks Malita. I hope you like it!
How does this compare to the Netgear Powerline Adapter?
That depends on what you mean by that exactly. Are you talking about speed wise?
@@TechGearTalk yes speed wise. Would I get a wireless speed or wired speed? Thanks.
Only two levels but the router / internet port is located in the study upstairs. Sounds like the Orbi will sort out my WiFi issues.
I would probably just do the basic system (router + satellite) and that should work. If you don't mind, please come back and update this tread with the results. Thanks!
Can you post the setup video and firmware issue video?
Working on it right now. Please subscribe if you haven't yet and you'll get a notification. Are you running into the same issue?
Hi Leif, here is the firmware issue video: th-cam.com/video/2IbeULaSxYs/w-d-xo.html (setup is coming)
Im sorry....but you look just like David Schwimmer.......its crazy
I noticed a menorah on the mantel :)
My goodness he does haha
No he doesnt.
@Tech Gear Talk: Is this router is Comcast Compatible, meaning Coax cable input? Does it support Disney Circle - Parental control?
There is no Coaxial input for the Orbi. I use a modem (from ATT - used to be from Comcast) then I connect that to the Orbi. I don't know about the Disney Circle - I'd give Netgear a quick call to make sure.
As far as coverage, it's top notch, that I can for sure vouch for.
thanks. i'm in the need to upgrade my router and this was helpful
Glad to hear it Linda. Let me know if you have any questions.
And if i get the orbi and the nighthawk x10 could i use both at the same time
Yes, there is a way for you to use both at the same time. Why would you do that? (I do it for the dual link for the NAS)
Cut my cable long ago. I have my own arris modem/router combo. Can I run orbi with that ? Thanks, great review
Is it possible to connect these Orbit Satellites to other routers rather than a Netgear one?
No, but you can physically connect the router to another router and only use the Orbi system for your WiFi, but still use your router for other functions.
Really Nice review, Spot on. The best one review of this System out there. Well done 👌🏾
Thanks!! Glad it was helpful.
Hey! Great review, I have the exact same problem you do, so thanks for this video, it made me decide on buying the orbi system. =)
Glad it was helpful. I still use it and am super happy with it. Let me know if you have any questions. If you end up getting it, let me know how it works out.
hey guy i have the same WiFi router an dim having pretty much the same problem . how much better is the netgear orbi ?
Thanks for watching Sean. From a range standpoint, it's not even close. The Orbi blows it out of the water. If you have areas in your house w no wifi, I wouldn't think twice. Get it. Sell your other router.
great thanks keep you posted
how about a power line wifi adapter is that an option ?
If you look at the walkthrough (starts at 1:16) and then pause it at 1:24 (right after I come down the stairs) you will see the Orbi satellite on the left side on a wooden chest. it's probably about 60 feet away if there was direct line of sight.
beautiful house
Hi did you have the satellite and router in line of site? How far were they?
Hi there. I think I mention it in the video. Definitely no line of sight (going through several walls and the ceiling. I don't remember the distance, but I really think I mentioned it in the video. Let me know.
@@TechGearTalk ah yes thank you very much for the video, awaiting my delivery new :) subbed
CONGRATS!!! Let me know how it works out. Appreciate you joining the channel!
Just got mine! Loving it! Thanks
Good to see another happy user!

I have Orbi router and satelite and my speed is 33 Mbps near the main router downstairs in my living room. I have a satellite upstairs and when I test at the furthest part of the house upstairs in a bedroom I am getting 18 Mbps.
Appreciate you sharing David. What about right next to the satellite?
@@TechGearTalk What I found out is the speed depends on what device you are using. My computer attached with a wire directly to the router is much faster. It's off the charts. Faster than can be measured with 'speed test'.
That doesn't sound right... what speed do you have coming in? I have fiber and I'm getting (tested now) 411 down and 351 up
@@TechGearTalk Speed test only goes to 100 but I am measuring 230 down and 11 up at my main router attached with a cable.
That's strange - my speed test goes much higher. I get +900 up and down wired.
Hi, great video thanks. Could you confirm the placement of the satellite? Was this on the ground floor ? How many walls (brick) did the signal from router to satellite have to pass ? Thanks again
Thanks Darren. You are correct, it's on the first floor. It's going through quite a few brick walls and the floor. A bit hard to estimate.
Nice review. I have a lot of the same wifi issues. Will try it out. Where did you wind up placing the satellite relative to the base unit?
Thanks! The router is on the second floor at one end of the house and the satellite is on the first floor in the middle of the house. Thank you for such an honest review.
+f3rns _ thank you for watching. I hope the review was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
So where do you get this Orbi. I live in Alaska.
+Dorothy Williams hi Dorothy. Here is a link in the description. Does amazon deliver in Alaska?
Hey,
nice Video.
Is it also possible to manage the Wireless Clients in the Router? Like change the Name or set an fixed ip?
Yes, you can do both of those, port forwarding, parental controls, etc.
Thanks for your Answer. Does the Satellite sends in 2,4GHz and 5GHz band or just in one?
You're very welcome. it's a 1.7Gbps 5GHz band.
so did you go through the whole setup on the ipad already? Is your PC connected to the orbi with an Ethernet cable or wirelessly?
It is with Ethernet Connected. The Orbi was in the Router Mode. I changed it in the AP Mode. orbilogin.com still not work but i can access with the intern IP.
Now im testing the Orbi. Wireless signal is strong. But some wireless functions are still missing.
But i thought i can Setup Orbi on the PC. Didn't know that i must do it with an Smartphone or Tablet.
Thanks so far ;)
Thanks for the great review and time!!!!!!!!! You have a Beautiful home as well!
Thanks Rick! I appreciate you watching.
do you guys think that this would work if the router had to be placed in the attic?
I can't see that being a problem. You can set the satellite on the main floor and it should cover the whole house. How big is the house?
Hello, You forgot to mention how far apart is the router and the satellite.. thanks!
Thanks for watching!

I just checked, the Orbi Router does have a USB (2.0). but just one.
nice review and testing, subbed =)
BTW nice house man, i love it.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you!
I'm super glad you liked it. Feel like I did this so long ago. I still use and love the Orbi btw.
Hi! Thank you for the video. Will the speed decrease if I use the satellite as a switch?
Hi Lisa. Do you mean if you actually plug into the satellite rather than using wifi? Also, when you say "speed decrease" in comparison to what? Let me know and I'll get right back to you.
Tech Gear Talk
I want to send you a picture, can I message you?
You can try. You can also go to Twitter and DM me. Just let me know when it's done.
I drew out my question instead...
Cool, where is it?
Thank you! helps a lot!
You are very welcome.
Ross from friends needs the best router for that big apartment In NYC.
When Rachel and I were on a break, she changed the Wi-Fi password on me!
Great review, are you still using the Orbi and is their Amy issue between 2.4ghz and 5ghz? Do any devices try to automatically connect to 2.4?
Thank you, that was very helpful!
Thanks Tim, I'm glad you found it useful.
Just a bit concerned about the glitch you found. Hopefully it has been fixed!
+Julian Lillico I don't think it's there, but even if it is, watch my other video and you'll see how I resolved it. Wasn't a big deal.
I will set mine tomorrow
Congrats! Let me know how it works out for you. I still love mine.
As well as improving my home's wi-fi coverage I'm also trying to introduce some ethernet availability (the house has none) without destroying every wall, floor and ceiling in the the house :)
Sorry for the long post, cheers.
Can only dream of those speeds, my speed is our super fibre over here :)
I forgot to ask can you port forward and tweak stuff with the Orbi router or is it all pretty much locked down plug & play? Cheers.
You can definitely do that. It's under: ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Port Forwarding/Port Triggering.
does it support USB modem connection?
How will you be using a USB modem?
by plugging it to that router I guess. It has a kind of USB port, right?
I don't believe it can be used that way.
thanks for the review ross
+Fox Unit Delta glad you liked it. Rachel says hi.
How many devices can connect to one orbi?
+Noah S wirelessly? Or via an Ethernet cable?
Tech Gear Talk wirelessly
+Noah S technically around 250 although of course you're still limited by the overall bandwidth your isp provides. How are you planning to use it where you have so many devices?
Tech Gear Talk you have a lot of devices I have the neck your AC 1900 and it does not work like they said it would we have enough coverage just when it hits a certain amount of devices it just restarts every like five seconds
Seriously? That's no good. You using the latest firmware? It definitely should be doing that. How many devices are you connecting?
I play world of Warcraft will it handle that and 5 devices?
Of course. You are only limited by the bandwidth from your ISP.
Outstanding review!
Thank you very much!
You should review Amplifi. Better solution and less expensive.
Good review though.
Thanks Mark. I'm going to go look into it now. Are you using it?
Great job. Thank you!

Maybe you should consider using Powerline Adapter. If you really really really don't want to rewired your house.
+Jason DiLaurentis I had a bad experience with those years ago but you're right; that would have been another option to consider. I'm super happy with the current setup. Thanks for watching Jason!
